  • With the release of the Sony A7R III, we felt it was time to revisit E-Mount and Micro 4/3 adapters for Canon and Nikon lenses. Metabones, Sigma and Commlite all have interesting new options, so Chris Niccolls took a few of them along with a batch of beautiful 85mm F1.4s to see where we stand with adapted lenses these days.

    Well done video that basically mirrors my experiences thus far. What I find most encouraging is how much better adapted lenses work on the a7R3 vs the a7R2 (and even the a6500). That tells me a lot of the improvements come down to advances in Sony's focus system.

      Dustin Abbott I agree. I have both the A7S2 and R2 and I have no trouble using legacy APS glass on the R2, since it has sensor pixels to burn. But I only use FF with the S2.

    I've decided to give you my business for the last two lenses I bought simply because of the effort you put on these videos. It would be easier to buy locally but I think we need to reward what you've been doing and I appreciate that you are open to test different things.
    I also need to mention that I've had top grade service with my problematic pentax d fa 70-200mm lens I had to return. I was offered a shipping refund for a doa lens focusing system and I didn't even had to ask for it. Obviously my next purchase was placed to you. The online assistance we receive when purchasing and also for the support is fantastic.
    Keep coming the video and I will make sure to send you my business.
    A++++++ would buy again :)

    I hope you guys will keep up with this, and keep us up to date. As a Nikon shooter with both a crop (D7100) and full-frame body (D810) I see two VERY important options that a great adapter would provide... especially for the Sony system. First, of course, some people could switch to Sony bodies, without the fear of costing a fortune in new glass. But just as important, for me... I'd consider trading in my crop sensor camera for a Sony A7 III, for example, while keeping my D810. Then I'd have a real opportunity to test Sony, and be more sure about it, before jumping ship entirely. I've been waiting, the same as many others, for Nikon to come out with their full-frame mirrorless system, but it's still not clear when this might happen. Thanks for all the work, guys!

    • @huiedinwiddie7294
      @huiedinwiddie7294 5 лет назад +1

      This is my exact same situation. I have a D7100 and a D800. I have rented (3) separate Sony bodies (A6400, A7II and A7Riii) along with Nikon Z6 (hated it's low light capability); however, I LOVE the functions of the A7RIII and plan on purchasing it...however...I have both Nikon and most exclusively now, Tamron G2 lens (85 1.8, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 Gen 2). LOTS of $$ invested in lens. I will keep my D800-regardless!! Now, I wish to keep and use all the functions of my Tamron lens for my Nikon on the Sony A7RIII body. Just need a good/reliable adapter that will adjust aperture, shutter, ISO, etc. functions on my G2 lens, minimally. Guess I'll have to keep looking and waiting. I do NOT need it for any video purposes...strictly portraiture use.

  • @daycreek

    Great video. Thank you for your hard work. I would like to mention that the longer the lens, the more difficult it becomes for these adapters to focus quickly. There are a lot of wildlife/bird photographers out there with long lenses over 400mm that are anxiously awaiting improved accuracy and acquisition. Adapters and newer Sony bodies have come a long way, but IMO the final fronteer to conquer is long lens combinations.
    I frequently use the Canon 600 f/4 II as well as the Sigma 150-600 (Canon mount - Contemporary). I recently tested these lenses at 600mm and 840mm with the A7R3 and both the Metabones and MC-11 adapters work, but not to perfection. Good enough for still or slow moving subjects but not for lightning fast birds-in-flight. As you mention, they have come a long way over time, but not completely there yet. It would be great to see Sigma come out with a 150-600 native lens for Sony mirrorless. That would be an incredible combination. BTW, the Sigma MC-11 with the Sigma shorter lenses work very well for video too.

      Joseph Molloy I’m also moving from Nikon. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do.. I may go for the Nikon adapter (not too worried about performance. Anything is going to be better than my current body). But yeah it’s a shame that Sony glass is so pricey. I’m think I may just start a set of Sigmas

  • @i.e.sergio
    @i.e.sergio 6 лет назад +9

    Sony adapters to crop bodies do also work extremely well with the A6300 and A6500. I'd honestly say that aside from an A7II at those crazy prices these days, the A6300+Metabones+Canon combo is the best balance between quality glass/consistent performance and cheap prices for a mirrorless system today.

    I use a metabones speed booster with a Sony a6300 to do indoor event shooting and I have to say the combination works almost perfectly. Making the Canon L go from a F4 to F2.8 is a big boost as well. The important thing is not all Canon glass plays the same. Continuous focus with the 70-200 f2.8 L series 2 is very fast and tracks well with the Sony. In deep low light conditions, I've had to go to manual focus, but again the EF and the focus assist, it works really good for event type stuff.
    I've had several other photographers quiz me what the heck I was shooting, and most were surprised at the shots I was getting. The other bonus is the silent shooting. I was able to get way closer to the subject and still not distract. Looking forward to seeing how the combination works with the new Sony A7 III.

    Question, I'd like to use the Commlite on my Sony EA50 Video camera with Nikon lenses, I'm not bothered about AF as I use M/F when shooting video, what I'd like to know though is will this adaptor give me aperture/iris control when using my Nikon 200-500 G lens. Bear in mind that this lens has no aperture pin at all and relies completely on electrical connection between the Nikon body and lens.

    Are there any options for Pentax/K-mount lenses (that keep AFocus features)??? I love shooting with my K-1, and love the IQuality that comes from my lineup of lenses. It really feels like a complete kit (can't think of a range or situation it can't handle). I can post what lenses I have, if interested. Very tempted to get a Sony a7iii, but not if that means I need to invest in complete new glass. I saw something about using a TechArt Pro + Leica adapter??

    Also MC-11 has some limitations in phase detect points coverage. At least mine has. The Metabones does not have that. Maybe it is because of my 35 1.4 Art. I have not tried the 85 1.4 Art.

    Great review, I liked how you and Jordan did the comparisons. I disagree with your comments that not many Fuji users use adapters. I'm in both Fuji And Sony groups and I see a lot of photos posted on the Fuji groups that were shot using adapters. I think that since the Fuji shooters like the retro feel of film photography, it pairs well with using other brands of vintage glass on manual adapters. You are probably right though for the auto focus adapters.

    A7ii with mc-11, no eye af with any of my 5 canon L lenses. Latest firmware on camera and adapter. It says lens not supported. I’ve set custom function already.

    Can you shoot in afc for video w canon to lenses and the mc11? For example 24mm stm 2.8 and the mc-11 for video?

    What do you think of the Sigma Art FE mount announcement? Some sources are saying they'll have a rubber gasket on the mount.

    Thanks for doing this test it is great to see where things stand at the moment. As a Nikon and m43 shooter, I am hoping that they can get some smart adapters to work there sooner than later even if the performance is not great.
    I personally don't have a G9 yet but from what I have read and seen the AF always is going to look like it is hunting when tracking an object but I hear when you actually are taking frames it is extremely reliable and probably if you had done a running test it would likely have gotten a lot of keepers. This is only for stills in video I would agree it is likely to look terrible.
    It will also be interesting to see what the rumored new Nikon mirrorless system will offer and can it get close to catching up with where Sony seems to be.

    When I use metabones on my a7riii the camera feels delayed while focusing and shooting at the same time. If I focus and then take a shot (back button focus) it is not delayed. The camera is also freezing probably every few minutes of use if I shoot photos while focusing. Experience any of this?

    Which camera in your opinion (including and mostly Jordan) will work better with Tamron 150-600mm lens: - sony A7iii or GH5/G9 for video, meaning some auto functions are available, mostly focus. And recomendations on adapter for such set up, and with additional 1.4 x or 2x converter. Thank you.

    Thank you for the review. I have an Ef metabones speed booster adapter to m43rds. But was surprised with the contrast with how fast the Emount adapters are. I was thinking of buying some sigma glass in EF mount to use. But this video now questions that. I am not too interested in Canon glass at all. I got this adapter as general one to use with Nikon, adaptall, and yus lenses that I have. All manual, including my only Canon lens the mp 65mm 5x macro.
    Very interesting to see the sigma glass with the MC11.
    If you have the time I would like to see an autofocus test on the GH5 with your 18-35 f1.8, the 50-100mm f1.8 and the sigma 150-600mm. These were the lenses I was considering for speed, reach and lower cost.
