I am impressed by your ability to turn the frustration of adapting lenses into a comedy.
A pleasure to read your kind words - there was a time when I aspired to be a comedian.
The Sigma MC11 is the best value for money and works great with the A6300 and canon lenses. Check it out. Great video.
Getting lots of note on this one ... I'll check it out.
It's first video I saw today from your channel, liked and subscribed.
Nice explaining the adapters.
Welcome aboard! It's a pleasure to have you join my channel. Thanks!!
I got a cheapo adapter from China £20-30 pounds seemed to focus ok at not more than 300 yds ish depends on lens mine was canon 40mm and seemed the best and went much further allowing focus, and with the larger lens, manual with peeking and/or image magnification once I found out how to do it was a good work around.
Thanks for sharing this info.
Great video Maarten I use the Sigma MC-11 with the Canon 17-40 and the 70-200 f4 and is almost native, I find this combo to be very reliable indeed. Again All of your videos are great and very informative have a great day.
Thanks for the kind words - you're not the only viewer to praise the MC-11, I'll have to check it out.
I shot the F1 preseason with the MC-11 and the massive Sigma 150-600 Sport on the A6000 and the A7ii (my A6300 arrived the week after )
As the MC-11 uses the PDAF you only get about 60% coverage on the A7ii but would get the complete 96% (or whatever Sony say the coverage is) on the A6300
Thanks for sharing your observations.
The Sony E-mount cameras are using the E letter because they have Eighteen millimeter flange distance.
Flange distance is the distance between the camera's mounting flange and the image sensor or film.
Lenses that are native to cameras with larger flange distance can be used with adapter on cameras with shorter flange distance without issues. The reverse can be done but causes problems with focusing in the infinity.
SLR And dSLR cameras due to the presence of the mirror mechanism have larger flange distance than all mirrorless cameras.
Mirrorless cameras with considerable shorter flange distances than Sony e-mount cameras are the Pentax Q with 9.2 mm flange distance, 1/1.7" sensor and the Samsung NX mini with 6.95mm flange distance, 1" sensor. The Samsung is recently discontinued and the Pentax Q is on sale. The Pentax Q with adapters can accept nearly any lense but due to its very small image sensor, it is an unfavorable mirrorless camera.
Many mirrorless cameras have autofocus adapters but the Sony e-mount cameras have most of the autofocus adapters in the market.
The Sony LA-EA4 is the only adapter off all mounts that offers optical phase detection. All a-mount autofocus lenses from Sony, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina can work perfectly with the LA-EA4. The LA-EA4 adapter transforms any e-mount camera into an SLT camera. Of course the autofocus of the LA-EA4 isn't as fast as that of the latest and most expensive Sony SLT cameras.
What an interesting read - thank you for sharing your insights.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you for your good words. Your channel has helped me a lot.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
This is as comprehensive as it can be!! Thanks very much! It is far more clear to me now, which kind of adapter I should get - if i at all do.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Let us know how it goes.
I really liked the new Sony mirrorless cameras, but we are shooting Nikon and Canon since years, we keep changing bodies but i am not interested at all to change the lenses ! oh too much money no way.
I hope the adapters will be more faster and smarter so instead of upgrade to new Canon or Nikon body we can get Sony body with adapter and keep our legendary glass :)
Thanks.
Faster and smarter would clearly be better. I found the overall experience somewhat lacking. And thanks for the kind words.
Thank you for your comprehensive review. It's the best I've seen to date.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for the kind words.
Thank you, but it's more than just being kind Maarten. I have the a7II and a6300 as well as both Sony lens adapters.
I have watched many reviews on the Vello and Metabones lens adapters and NONE of them come even close to your review. You took the time to go through each focus mode and showed video in support of your findings -- very well done and thorough.
I'm being more than just kind Maarten. I am giving kudos and credit where it's due.
And thanks again, it is a pleasure to read your comments.
thank you for such a clear review, this is why i love your channel!
I really appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
My Metabones 4 came with an Allen key in the box, but it was pretty well hidden in the lining of the box.
Aaarrgghh ... found it now. Thanks for your help.
Amazing review! looking forward to your MC-11 vs Metabone review on the A7 cameras! please do consider! cheers.
I appreciate the kind words. Clearly will have to add that item to my editorial schedule. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you Maarten. As always clear and coherent.
How nice of you to say, thanks for commenting.
This is the most useful review I've seen in a while. Thank you
I appreciate the kind words, thanks for commenting.
"I don't really know what that means, but it's fun to say." rofl...words to live by, right there.
Hehe, thanks for humouring my attempts at comedy.
Thanks - great presentation.
How kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Sony could have built the A mount Series without changing the Mount size. they could have continued with the A mount BECAUSE the weight advantage of the E mount is fast disappearing because of quality lenses weight.......
Hindsight is 20/20.
I've been having good use of the Sigma adapter on their Art lenses.
A good tip, thanks!
I enjoy your videos. Do you know how well the laea3 adapter works with the a7ii? If I understand how it works, autofocus should be improved when compared to the laea4, but I wonder by how much?
Thank you for the kind words. Other than the ones I used in this video, I have no experience with adapters. That's an excellent question - I'll hope that someone has the answer for you.
As usual, I enjoyed your informative videos. Would any of these adapters be okay for shooting video? Or would you need to mostly manual focus through the adapter before shooting your video footage? Thanks for your input and informative videos.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, yes (mostly) and video shooters usually prefer manual focus anyway.
HI great review . What do you think would be the best adapter if I am getting Tamron G2 lenses for my Sony A7rii ? Thanks
Unless you already own the lenses, don't buy an adapter, get native lenses. You have to really love your glass in order to put up with an adapter.
I have a couple of different adapters, one of which is the Metabones, for using my Canon lenses on my Sony cameras. I'll mostly focus manually except if I use the 70-200mm for "people" shots, in which case I'll be hand held using some version of autofocus. The Metabones worked very well when new but has since developed a loose and sloppy connection to the camera. Auto focus isn't reliable anymore. Depending on how you hold the lens seems to make the problem come and go. Could this be poor construction with a low mechanical tolerance ruining my shoots? I assume you didn't experience anything like this or you would have mentioned it. Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks for your note. In a 2-3 week review, those kinds of reliability issues rarely turn up - so thanks for sharing this detail.
Unfortunatelly no Sigma MC11 Adapter. ....
Always good to know I can rely on your astute observations. Thanks for commenting.
when testing the A6300 did you have it on silent mode at any point? have found this greys out options with native lenses and even more so with adapters.
Good reminder. I was shooting with e-front on and silent off.
Nice video. Have you created a spreadsheet showing all these variables by chance? That would be most helpful if possible.
It doesn’t sound like moving from Canon DSLR to a7iii with adapters are:
1. Magical
2. Convenient
3. Profitable
It seems to get all three, you have to switch too 100% Sony products. That’s if you can recoup the cost of your other products.
I have not. I make videos, I leave spreadsheets to others. I agree with your assessment. If you want the full benefit, you'll also have to buy at least some native lenses. However, it's not unreasonable to keep some of your favourites - just don't expect them to behave well.
Maarten Heilbron thanks for the reply and great video!
@@samsdad638 always happy to help
I just bought a Vello Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Accelerator AF Lens Adapter to use with my Helios m4-2. Is this a good fit? It was on sale at B&H from $500 to $99. I have a A6500.
I was gonna get a Turbo ii but figured if this thing is on sale I might as well. Any thoughts would be appreciated
As long as your expectations are low, most adapters work, but you may need to use manual focus and exposure. I don't know that lens, but I suspect it's manual operation anyway.
Can you review the Techart M-Lens autofocus adapter? I've been thinking about getting it for my M-Rokkor 40mm f2 and Sony a7ii.
Thanks for commenting. I'm receiving several follow-up requests. Let me see how well this topic plays out, and whether a second video would be interesting.
Once again great review. I recently picked up the MC 11 to test with my vintage Canon 70 200 F4 USM non is lens. It works well enough for me to keep it . Focus AF S works AF C seem to hunt more. Face Detect works no eye af. Focus area wide center and Flexible spot. Works better on the A6500 with IBIS than my A6000 . A cheaper option than sony's 70 to 200 but no bells and whistles😆
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'll have to put that one on the todo list.
Love your videos. I have a question about a problem I am having with my a6300 after using an adapter. I bought a K&F Concept FD to Sony E and used with a Canon FD 50mm 1.8. Pictures look great but after a couple days shooting with it, I switched back to my Sony kit Lens (16mm-50mm) and every now and then my auto focus lags for several seconds. That has happened in different lighting conditions and every time it happened I was in aperture priority and by changing the aperture back and forth, the auto focus would act normal again. I thought that maybe I had a defective a6300 and took it back to Best Buy to exchange for a new one. The new one was working fine with the kit lens and even with the sony 55-200mm until I used the adapter again and when I switched back to the kit, i am having focus hunting issues. Has anyone experienced that?
Interesting question - I have no experience with this product.
Thanks for replying though. I haven't found a single piece of info on anyone with this problem. The adapter is completely mechanical so it puzzles me even more.
Why'd you omit the Sigma MC-11? It works nicely on my a6500.
I chose two I felt were representative - I didn't mean to overlook the Sigma, which I see, based on the comments, is a crowd favourite.
Hi thank you so much for this very useful information. I have one question I mistakenly bought a lens not compatible with my camera. and its impossible to return it by now. I bought a sigma 18-35mm 1.8 DC for SONY A mount but my camera is Canon EOS 90D which is EF-S Mount--( totally did not fit)--- Could I still find an ADAPTER between my camera Canon 90D and this Sigma lens which Sony A mount?
Thank you so much
Check with Google and B&H Photo - but that would certainly not be a usual adapter.
hey i got an A6500 and wanna use the ZEISS
Milvus 35mm f/2 ZE Lens for Canon EF whats sort of mount would you recomend ? thanks
That depends on your expectations. The Metabones is a good choice, and although I didn't review it many viewers recommended the Sigma.
thanks for sharing that info. what type of monitor are you using on top of the camera?
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. It's an Atomos Shogun, which I use to record the menu screens.
i have sony a6300 camera which adapter shld i use for my canon lens and i want in my budget
When I tried several adapters, I was not satisfied and would not recommend them: ruclips.net/video/iGnShj-Zc5c/видео.html.
That said, I did not try the Sigma MC-11, which was recommended by many viewers.
Hi Mr Heilbron, I wonder if you can recommend a good ultra wide lens for the A6300? I’m drawn to the 10-18mm but it’s f4 and expensive. I’m hoping to do real estate type videos so I’m expecting a lot of low light indoor work. Would you possibly advise against that and in favour of some sort of converter with a canon lens or something?
I'm happy with the 10-18. I'd much rather use a native e-mount lens than an adapted one. There are more ways to solve low light than with a lens. I don't have an real estate experience, but I'd think that a reasonably powerful on-camera LED pointed up or used with a softbox would work.
I'd much rather work with a native e mount lens myself, primarily because the autofocus is going to be more reliable. I'm not sure why but most real estate people seem to want to avoid bringing in light... thanks for the response.
always my pleasure.
In your opinion which adapter would you suggest for a Sony a7iii to allow me to still use my canon lenses such as 24-105, 50mm, etc....?
If you didn't find the answer in the video, I would suggest the simplest and least expensive one, so that your expectations are that you will use the camera's auto modes are low and you won't mind using the lens in manual mode. I predict that you won't use them much, unless you are very dedicated or have no e-mount lenses. And really, this camera with a G-mount lens and the EyeAF feature is magic ...
marteen can you control audio levels on the Panasonic g7 or the fz 1000???
Off topic, but yes for the G7, don't know for the FZ1000.
Hey Maaten, enjoying your videos as always. I am looking for an adapter to use Nikon dx on a Sony a6000. You always know your stuff so I thought I'd ask. Andrew
I haven't tried them, but I understand that Sigma makes the best ones for automatic features. On the other hand, if you're good with manual settings, the least expensive mount adapter would work.
Many thanks! I will look! And thanks for quick response!
always my pleasure
Hi, congrats about the video. I have one question: Would I be able to use Canon EF/EF-S APS-C Lenses in a Sony A7III via an adapter? If, yes, would you recommend some?
Yes, I thought I covered that in the video - although it's now a bit dated. Your choice of lenses - depends on your needs.
Thank you, i'm in Colombia. I just got the sony adapter used, but the mirrow got a scrach, is posible to buy a replacement? :( I really want to use my old minolta lenses whith my new/used a600 :)
I'm not sure. Contact Sony service, maybe they know.
Does focus peaking work in manual mode with Canon EF lenses on the Sony 7 III?
I haven't tried that to confirm, but it should.
I have a couple of Pentax K-1000 bodies and various lenses. I would like to know if the old K-mount lenses can be used with any modern digital camera bodies.
I'm sorry, I have no Pentax knowledge - maybe your dealer knows?
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your very quick reply. I did, in fact, find adapters specifically for K-mount lenses to be attached to the Canon M50 among other brands and models. Maybe some other old school shotgeeks like me will find it to be useful information. Let the experimentation begin!
@@ravencole2740 Very good. Keep me posted.
Why didn't you use the best adapter with all the functions available? I just don't get it!
I was demonstrating how different the features and functions were based on the combination of camera and adapter to see which would be best. Is there an adapter that is best? Where all of the camera's features are available for both A7 and A6300 models?
Hi, Is there such an adapter to mount Sony lenses to Canon EOS R?
I don't know. lmgtfy.app/#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=e-mount%20adapter%20to%20canon
I have a Sony SLT A58 camera, and I am looking for an adapter to mount E-lenses. Which adapter should I use. Thanks
I'm sorry, but I have no experience with that kind of adapter.
any sense if the Sony 55-300mm F/4.5-5.6 DT lens with LA-EA3 performs well on the A6500?
Sorry, have not tried that combination.
Now that B&H sent you that stuff to borrow, you need to watch a video on: How to disappear without a trace.
Not sure if that is in my best interest.
is there a quality adopter to use Sony "E" mount lens on a sony "A"mount camera ????
I haven't seen E to A, only the other way around.
Will tamron lenses work with this?
As long as it has the appropriate mount.
Thank you / nice video. How can I add tilt shift lens to sony a6500?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Try lensbaby, they make lots of interesting lenses.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you.
In a weird way this makes we want to buy a canon for what I am calling folly photos. Thank you again.
Tell me more about folly photos - sounds fun.
toy camera effect, weird boka, weird swirls and odd light flares and maybe tilting -- more for canon it seems
Right. I usually call them "gimmicks", but if I may, "folly" might be a nicer term.
I can’t find a shift and tilt adapter for Sony E mount Lens, to Sony E Mount Cameras.
do you know how to use google?
@@MaartenHeilbron Yes I think I do, 10+years of practice or, the first year repeated ten + times.
@@gerardodd2086 Google here provides several e-mount tilt-shift options.
Maarten, what about the mc-11? do you have a review on that one?
Thanks for the kind words. Not yet, but I see several requests coming in ...
.i want to know if i can use this lea3 on my sony A Mount lenses on the Sony a7/3 E mount and maintain 100% of it's features?, or must i use the lea4.......the Sony cameras i use are a99/2, a99, a77/2 and a77 ? What Sony adopter will give me 100% of the lenses and cameras features ?....thank you
I don't know. Check Sony's web site, but it's likely not 100% of the features.
Maarten Heilbron thanks
always happy to help.
Well done 👍 - too much time and detail on the worst adapter or not enough time on the top two IMHO
Thanks for sharing your opinion, and I do appreciate the kind words.
TALK ABOUT CONFUSING....IT IS CLEAR TO ME THAT THESE ADOPTERS HAVE NOT BEEN PERFECTED......I use Sony A mount cameras.......i use sony; zeiss, tamron, sigma glass, what adopter would work best for me if i want to place these A mount lenses on a Sony E mount camera?....also, if i would choose to be in manual focus what functions will not work 100% for me?.......WOW!....thank you.......i use-----

Hi Maarten. I have an Alpha A6100 E-mount camera. I have a Tamron 150-600mm A-mount lens which came with a LA-EA3 adapter between them (albeit a full frame adapter). Although the auto-focus works for stills, on the camera it is disabled for video - only MF. I'm sure you've run into this. Is there an adapter that would allow AF during video ? This Sony table indicates that the LA-EA2 may work (but not sure) www.sony.com/electronics/support/lenses-mount-adaptors/la-ea3/articles/00021281
I'm not sure either, I don't have experience with that lens and haven't used any adapters since this review.
What adapter might you recommend for a vintage Canon 50mm 1.4 USM lens (~2005) and Sony a6000? Manual with aperture control or a Fotodiox Pro Fusion Smart adapter, ie.
You won't be disappointed if you get an inexpensive one and it doesn't focus properly, you will be if you get an expensive one and it doesn't
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your prompt reply! Agreed. I bought a smart fusion pro so that it may be utilized for future lenses. However, it 'blocks' my viewfinder. I am using MF, and setting focal distance/ISO via Sony. Any thoughts to why the viewfinder appears blocked? I programed the Sony to LCD only, as a result. RP
@@ronakpatel5403 Something is going wrong, maybe it's something else that's preventing the viewfinder display. I can't imagine that it's the adapter.
The Sony Adapter is only A to E, so I am not sure how useful it is since Sony is update E to look like the family of A.
If you have A mount lenses and an E mount camera, it's very useful.
@@MaartenHeilbron it is, but after buying the Sony a6500 I can now see why Canon and Nikon are more popular.
And why is that?
Where is MC-11 adapter
Have you tried searching for it on Google?
Or did you mean to say "Thanks for the video, could you please review the Sigma MC-11?"
In which case, my reply would be "That's kind of you to say. I'm seeing several requests for other adapters, so let me see how well this video plays - and whether a follow up video would be worthwhile."
When you talk about adapters for sony, sigma mc-11 is inevitable. It comes almost half the price of matabones and works great for most of canon and sigma lenses. Thus i was looking this in your video but didn't find.
Sorry to disappoint.
Don't be, you probably just missed it. You could definitely cover in upcoming videos.
I could. Thanks.
I had an interesting conversation with Zeiss concerning the Zeiss lens they made for Sony....We are talking about the Zeiss (sony) 135mm f1.8 lens....Zeiss does not support or service this lens, if the lens was made for nikon or canon, yes, but no service for this lens made for Sony....I called Sony, they told me, even though i bought that lens from their online store when it was operating, cost 1,798.00..... Sony does not support or service that product, they told me to contact Zeiss....This is just another example of Sony's rotten no good customer service....I would urge everyone not to trust Sony on any level.... I would say any negative so called ranting on Sony they have it coming.........
That does not sound right. Are you saying that Zeiss will not service a Zeiss made and branded lens (you are not talking about a Sony made Zeiss branded lens), just because it's an e-mount? That's too ridiculous to be true.
