  • As I've been experimenting with different mirrorless camera options from Sony, like the a7S ii & a7R ii, I've tried using both native Sony lenses and adapting Canon lenses to them.
    Check today's prices below: geni.us/metabones
I've had a less than stellar experience using Canon glass on Sony bodies, so I wanted to share a little bit about what you can expect if you're trying to make the switch to Sony from Canon and plan to bring a bunch of EF or EF-S lenses along with you for the ride.
In this video I explain which of the many adapters I recommend getting, my experience with the speed and reliability of auto-focus in both photo and video mode, and whether I even recommend keeping your Canon lenses when you make a switch to mirrorless cameras.
Special thanks to B&H for loaning me the a7R ii to use and be on the lookout for my full review next week.

Dude, you need to do some more testing. Been using the 35mm 1.4L Mark II on my a7III with the Sigma adapter. Works perfectly. No problems with Eye AF either. You recommend sticking to Sony glass. Ofcourse you want native glass but the problem is that Sonys used prices are insane and you get much better price on used glass if you buy Canon glass.

I use a right angle bracket when shooting my A6500 on a tripod. This elevates the camera body about a half inch higher and also easily allows me to switch from horizontal to vertical positions without having to hang my camera cantilevered on its side for vertical compositions...

I will never sell my L series lenses. I have successfully used Canon 85 mm 1.2 L II for amazing results with reasonable AF using Metabone Ultra. Your experience may have been with older lenses and probably older rev of Metabone. I also use 24 mm 1.4 L and Canon Fisheye plus 16-35 version II L. None of these lenses have caused any grief and results are outstanding.

I use the metabones with the latest version firmware with an a7rii and canon ef 300 2.8 L lens. Works great in the standard mode but limited to more of the centre of the frame. The new advanced mode gives you the full frame using hybrid focus which also works well and works with video reasonably. You should test it as its better

Thanks for posting this! We are thinking about swapping our Osmo Pro for either the A7S or the a6500. We are invested in Canon glass since we shoot our photos with the 5Dmk3, but comparing the new MK4 to the Sony bodies, it's looking like Sony is the way to go for video.

I agree. Native > Non Native in majority of cases. The price of the Sony lens is what makes it hard. If I had to redo it all over again I would have saved up and purchased only Sony Native lens. For my A7s2 my line up would be Sony 16-35mm F4 and 28-135mm G lens. For my A7r2 pretty much the same as above but add a Sony 55mm 1.8, 90mm Macro 2.8 and a 70-200mm F4.

From my experience with Canon L lenses on A7 II and Sigma MC-11, things are not as you suggested, but much better:
    - the combo is awesome for photos, stills but also fast moving subjects
    - face detection mode focuses already on the eyes, no need for eye af!
    - best mode for fast af is the wide area
    - focus is very fast, similar speed with my Canon camera 5DII, depends on lens speed of course, some lenses are blazing fast on both cameras, some are slower on both cameras
    - using the MC-11 with Canon L lenses is not good for video, a lot of hunting and focus noise, should use Sony lenses for that purpose

@@OustFox that’s what I thought. But I see a lot of people shooting videos for product reviews and courses that use autofocus so that when they maybe hold something up to the camera, the autofocus dies it’s thing. It’s handy as they move around, I frame, also.

I get very decent af performance with Sigma mC-11 and Sony 7Rii. There is no eye focus and it does hunt a bit in low light but works very well in better light. On the other hand Sigma 35 art works perfectly with all AF features supported.

Thanks for the helpful information. I'd been contemplating this exact change, looking to upgrade from my 6D. While on vacation, a fellow photographer saw my body with the 70-300L lens and commented about the weight saying he had switched to Sony and used an adapter. This really got me thinking. However, even before viewing your video, I wondered about any compatibility issues. I think my questions have been answered. It's one thing to use, say a Sigma lens meant for a Canon body but another to adapt a Canon lens (or Nikon for that matter) to a Sony mirrorless. It is strongly rumored that Canon will announce a full frame mirrorless later this year so waiting seems the prudent thing. I have subscribed to your site and will wait for your tests results!

I have both the Sigma MC-11 and Metabones Smart "T" IV adapters.... with the latest firmware update for the MC-11 (literally released yesterday), I'm surprised how much better the 135L is now (vs the Metabones... which also has the latest FW). Focusing is pretty good with the flexible spot pushed to the corners ("rule of 3rds" corners), where as with the Metabones, it still struggles... THAT being said, I'm referring to static subjects, I haven't tested it on tracking moving subjects (especially subjects coming towards me), but my guess is that it's still not great.

Hi Caleb. Thanks so much for posting this video. I'm in a position of starting to build my camera collection and decided to go with the A7SII. I would mostly be using this camera for stills (for fun) but want to be able to shoot corporate videos with it also. Currently I rent the C100 or C300 for those and so I'm familiar and like the Canon system and their lenses especially the 24-70 F2.8 II and the 70-200mm F2.8 II. But after much research online (haven't been able to test it myself), it seems the Metabones Mark IV despite the latest update doesn't perform reliably for auto focus in video mode which is where I would need it. So now I've got an A7SII and two brand new Canon lenses and no adaptor yet. I'm thinking of selling the two Canon lenses and buying the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 G master series and the Sony 70-200mm F4 G OSS as I can't afford the equivalent G master. Part of me thinks that somewhere down the line (hopefully not too distant) the autofocus for video will improve with another firmware update but since I'm starting from scratch, perhaps I should just invest in one system? I do prefer the colour of Canon and the "softness/warmth" of their images. Or keep the Canon lenses and continue to hire the C300 for jobs?

for Ultra fast focus, for video shooting, Sony lenses are must. And while one can manually focus easily with peaking and zoom, I uses manual lenses from Voigtlander to Mamiya Hasselblade with $9 adapters. The main advantage is you can see actual DOF before clicking (unlike with AF lenses).(in A or M modes exposure is automatically taken care by Auto ISO enabled)

I have one for my cannon lenses to adapt to my A6000 , it works fairly well i think. I wish i knew if the MC-11 worked better or not. The a7R II and the Metabones Smart Adapter mk4 T with certain Canon lenses work as good as the same lenses natively with the Canon 5D mk3. Those two lenses are 24-70 f2.8L II and 70-200 f2.8L II (they both focus instantly and accurately!), and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L II also works, but it's much slower (it's also slower with a Canon body). These 3 Canon lenses have a superb image quality and sharpness.
I also tried the Canon 85mm f1.8 (non-L) with the a7R II. It is a wonderful lens, but it doesn't want to find focus with the a7R II when it's a bit darker than normal outdoor daylight or sunshine. It didn't focus indoors.
I once tried the Canon 300mm f2.8 prime, and it also worked quite well. The 50mm f1.2 also works, but not as good as the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 which are my favorites.
The a7S II autofocus doesn't really work well with adapted lenses.

I'm only just looking at adaptors for my Canon glass to Sony e-mount and after watching your video realise it'll soon be three years old. But I still think it's very relative to my search for the right adaptor. I think in the end and for subjective reason you are right in suggesting sticking to Sony glass, I have decided however to purchase the EOS-NEX K&F Concept for a mere £17.00 Sterling. It will allow me to use a lot of my Canon glass, 70-200 mkii 16-35 f1.8 and others, maybe not all the features will work correctly but hay, it's only a few quid, and allows me to use my Canon lenses and anyway, maybe I'll adapt. Thanks Celeb.

Hey Caleb, thanks for another great video! I'm currently a Canon user shooting 80% of the time video (5D MIII and a 6D) and only 20% photo.... Since I just have a couple of Canon lenses I think I might be better of selling all my canon gear and stay away from lens adapter now that I'm thinking on switching to Sony, most probably to an A7S II since I shoot wedding and other events in low-light. Now that you have plenty of experience working with Canon and Sony cameras, would you consider a no-brainer to switch from a 5D to an A7S II? Is there anything you still miss from Canon? Thanks!

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  8 лет назад

Since I haven't fully made the switch to Sony yet (because we have so much Canon gear it will be really hard to sell it all + my wife and I both need a break in client work) I can't speak 100% to what I would miss, but I don't think there is much of anything.

raredreamfootage yes on certain lenses the aperture will only change in video mode. In photo mode the lens will only shoot wide open. Super weird quirk

QUESTION - I heard you mention that you've used af adapters on a7sii, I have been looking for a convertor that will work with a7sii and everything I find says the converter "Utilizes Phase-Detect Autofocus Mode" which the a7sii does not have, please let me know which adapter worked with a7sii , allowing autofocus to function. Thanks

HI!! great video! I need to ask someone with experience because everything is a LOT of money form me right now. The thing is that I have a sony a6500 E mount camera. And Im looking to buy a Tamron 28-75 2.8 lense. The thing is that the E mount model is about $750-800 U$. While the A-mount model is bout $200. A BIG difference. So I was thinking buying an adapter, as I basically want to do videos and the autofocus doesnt do a great work while recording I dont are much about that. BUT does the quality change? Is it worst? What are my disadvantages? Sorry for the long question! :)

Good info about the adapted lenses. BTW, digital zoom when using the Metabones Speedbooster and Canon glass with my SONY FS5 does work. As you mention, auto focus performance is poor, but I typically focus manually whenever shooting video. Regarding the suggestion of replacing Canon glass with SONY glass, that is an expensive proposition. It comes down to what gear the photographer/videographer already owns, their workflow and future camera needs. Speaking strictly for myself, I am not keen on SONY glass, and the auto focus limitations using Canon glass on my SONY FS5 are a non-issue. Just my 2 cents, adjusted for inflation...

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  8 лет назад

Thanks for chiming in Dave. That is super helpful to know. When manually focusing, the ability to digital zoom and check focus is a must for me, so I'm glad that is an option on the FS5, as I might switch over to that.

instead of using aps-c mode which prevents you from filming in 4k, you can just simply digitally zoom in until you get rid of vignetting and black edges. this is going to let you film in 4k even with an apsc lens.

Hi Caleb, question, I might buy an Irix 15mm t2.6 with EF mount, it's a fully manual cine lens, at some point I want to upgrade to Sony A7iv, do you think I will be able to use this lens on Sony and get most benefits out of it when using an adapter? As far as I know all the mount converters (Ef to E mount) are just adapters with electronic contacts but without additional glass in it.

  • @artistjoh

Native lenses, whether made by Sony or others like Zeiss are the best for autofocus on Sony, but the joy of mirrorless like the Sony or Panasonic etc, is the image magnification which makes manual focus a breeze. Native glass still has an advantage because of exif data, but as far as usability goes, older Nikon lenses with aperture rings, and Canon FD mount glass are a joy to use on the Sony bodies and give access to the specialty lenses that are not present in the native line-up. Older Nikon lenses are surprisingly cheap considering their superb quality, but too often get left out of the conversation. The manual focus Nikon’s and the Canon FD solve the size problem, and at any given focal length are the best value for money on a Sony full frame mirrorless camera.

I did first got an A7 for street photography, At the beginning I was really into 50mm (there is a superb 55mm Zeiss with AF or the Loxia) but I got rid of those and moved on the 35mm, the extremely small one (35mm ZA f/2.8). Superb glass, not for bokeh tho, for that I got an 85mm, which forces those portraits like a 50 on a crop sensor camera.

I just got the A7sii, metabones V and the battery grip. I was torn between the Canon 1dx and a7sii. I have all canon glass. I went w the a7sii bc of the peaking and image stabilization. Unfortunately I've not been able to get the image stabilization to work. Invalid lens it tells me. I've the same 50mm 1.2 Canon EF you have. Have you had any luck with steady shot and that lens?

Hi Caleb. I did a lot of research on this topic and concluded the same... I would like to know though, which is better suited to video the A7Sii or the A7Rii... and can you talk about the overheating issues on both of those cameras...

I haven't had any overheating issues on these cameras. If you're on the latest firmware you have better performance on heating.

As for which is better, I think the better all-around is the a7Rii because you can still film in 4K with the APS-C crop mode. The a7Sii is better as a low-light camera though.

it really depends on what lenses u have and pot luck if the adapter works. i have the a6300. adapters i have are 1. metabones speedbooster (msb) and 2. $50 chinese ef to e mount non speedbooster (efe) i will call them abbreviated names for speed ... the msb works perfect on the canon 17-40 and canon 50f1.4 (focus is fast and amazing and even continuous in video). the msb works just ok with the canon 24-105f4L and canon 70-200f4L (focus is fast and accurate when it feels like ot 75% of the time... sometimes it doesnt want to). msb with canon 100-400 doesnt work autofocus at all. the efe adapter doesnt work on any of the lenses, but on the canon 100-400 is flawless... super fast acurated autofocus! obviously eye autofocus doesnt work, but face detection and continuous work great on the ones mentioned above. cheers
