Some real-world indicators of how insanely strong Phil is:
1. His entire lead-out train (not just the donut chef) was blown up around 2% into the climb
2. His average of 17mph up 5-7% grades is a casual rider's average speed on rolling hills or even flats
3. The camera car literally fell behind Phil a bunch of times. Yes, I'm sure the driver was checking something out and let their foot off the gas, but nonetheless Phil opened up an immediate gap...on a car.
4. There were guys on bikes who went up faster than Phil that day...they were all on Kawasaki Ninjas (substitute your favorite fast motorcycle brand).
5. His HR just sat steady on 167bpm for the longest time. That was a steady effort. A. STEADY. EFFORT. Hard to fathom.
Exactly... came here to make point No.1. Some of those dudes will take their cycling pretty seriously no doubt, blown out in a matter of a couple of minutes. Insane
And this after he talks about being dropped by the guys who were drafting together to try to catch up with the leaders on the Tour of California. These people cannot be fully human.
Having done GMR only twice, I’m completely floored with his pace. I have no shame in saying he was moving 10+ MPH faster than me throughout. That includes me stopping to rest and fighting off cramps. Lol
Most of us would be happy to average 17 kph nevermind mph! He's a machine
Agreed. My eye was on that heart rate and nothing changed. Maybe +/-3 bpm!
I have the rare distinction of having driven every single mile of every Amgen Tour stage in the caravan (except the TT courses). There are only a few of us who were there for all 14 editions. And GMR is one of my favorite stages.
I miss seeing you out there! Wish those days could have gone on forever.
That day was a blast! I never realized how crazy fast you are until I witnessed it in person. Wow!
Also: really love a lot of the music on this one, Phil.
sorry but, with my but in the comfort of my room and looking at the video from my computer I find that his climbing speed is to strong.... so,.... I declare this as fake!!, the only option is that his bike has been rigged... but don't worry ppl, we still get that the bicycle as a device to move you with perhaps the lowest cost is still a pretty good option!
Awesome video! I was born in San Dimas and grew up in Glendora. GMR was a weakly ride until I moved to Houston, TX. Can't believe how fast you're tearing up the mountain.
This is California dreaming, the natural high of climbs and cookies and donuts. And Phil is living the dream, all to the beat of snappy elevator disco music.
that guy on the motorcycle almost getting taken out twice 30:45 mark
The first one was a bit dodgy, but that second one was awful.
Those cars are passing on double line and idiots
yoga jitsu that pissed me off. I see crap like this often on my rides and it’s sickening how people have no courtesy for anyone but themselves. You can probably buy both of those civics with a racing bike. But who would do that.
You’re so talented! This is my favorite WRE video to date. I’m so jealous of your raw climbing talent! Very impressive! You make everything look easy. Mind blown!
Lots of crazy action in this episode! RIP all those unsuspecting cyclists whose doors were blown off by Phil.
Some crazy drivers too
Did you see the long boarders?
@@worstretirementever Nuttier than cyclists, and with no brakes 😂
and the crazy lugers!
Around the 8 minute mark your watts dropped down to like the 395 range. Just thought you should know.
Okay jokes aside, this is ridiculous dude. Major respect.
That was insane, Phil! You're a beast! Major props to you, my man! Killer job on this climb!
Damn!!! I thought I was making progress holding 260 watts for an hour. Phil is a phreak
I love you r quick-witted banter and, of course, your snarkyness. In another universe, you'd be the host of a popular talk show. Music choices were fun this time. Great stuff, Phil.
you're so strong Phil. great video. that motorcycle buzzing you made me really angry..
RESPECT Phil...can't help but chuckle at those riders who are pretty damn pleased with themselves, happy with the work they are doing..and then you flew past them...damn brother, that must be quite the oh crap moment....thanks for the inspiration, as an old dude, watching you do this has reinvigorated my rides... beat myself up less, and enjoy the process more.
KOM! Shaking my head at the idiocy of some of those drivers.
Wow those car's we're really close!
Those two Civic hatchbacks...thank goodness the motorcycle going down saw what was going to happen if he didn't bail off the road.
I thought I was about to see someone die. Nice to see the rider pay attention because those civic drivers certainly werent
That motorbike rider could have been killed by those cars!
@Paul Angeloff All those cars passing in blind turns gives me flashbacks to all the crashes I've seen on HWY2.
Great effort! Great video - MUCH better audio, sound, and production. Well done, well done, well done!
This is the perfect video and soundtrack to play while doing the TrainerRoad ramp test.
This is one of the most inspiring (road) cycling videos on YT...
I used to climb GMR solo and timed myself from the yellow gate crossing in Glendora til I got to the Lodge in Mt Baldy. I rode that route each Sunday and tried to shave off time from my previous personal world record.
Crazy awesome power and watts for a retired guy. Nice work!
Nice photos at the end.
Anyone else get stoked seeing the skaters and lugers smashing down from 11:30-12? As a washed-up downhill skateboarder who has skated down this hill and is now into bikes, that made me so happy.
Congrats on the KOM!...btw, best music choices to date!
Thanks!
Absolutely killed it, Phil! Way to go!
Last time I was up there was 2011 for the ski lift finish. Great day on the bike. No record was set.
Chantry same day too! Incredible ride Phil!
Referring back to your recent Alberta vlog, Tim Horton's is opening in the city center of Birmingham, England, right across from a Starbuck's, of course.
Great ride, that music
Tho 😂 the 70’s want it back
Phil, there's no such thing as the wrong donut shop, but GMR goes very well with fresh strawberry donuts from The Donut Man, in Glendora. Maybe check it out next time they're in season.
Great Ride. Be great if you posted a song list. Phenominal music.
Real pro..absolutely incredible, I have nothing but respect.
loved the disco music in section 1-2
This was fantastic!
Awesome Phil ! the new face of Duracell for sure ;)
Awesome effort by Phil. The Donut Guy and I ride about the same speed.
The two Civic drivers should get their licenses revoked. SMH
You have incredible consistency and endurance. Pushing around 400 watts for over 20 minutes! And then 500 for the final minutes. How is that possible? I enjoy watching your efforts, whether you set a new KOM record or not. Kudos to you.
Do nothing else for a decade and it’s not that hard
Also, you're one of only a few who use your public platform to encourage donations to important charities. I think that takes your channel to another level. Bravo!
I'm looking forward to reading "Draft Animals" .
30:52 is real f'd up. GMR does have a decent historic death toll and most are motorcyclists... It's been awhile but I've used this beautiful road for a long time, going back to 1978. Kind of had the place to myself most mornings... Too much traffic now. Maybe this was just a busy day... Very impressive climbing. I think I could hang with you. For five minutes.
Damn, at 4:00, early 80’s Prince back from the dead and not a flasher mac in sight.
It hurts from just watching. I would be averaging not only around 300 W up there. He is a beast.
I love Travis!!! All donuts are healthy donuts.... and they’re just like cookies 🍪 🍩
that is an insane fitness level. also, that is one of the most lawless roads I have ever seen
damn 400 watts is tempo AF for you! you make it look easy!!!!
Dang. Inspiring. I ride tomorrow...
Hey I bought your book today cause I couldn't find an illegal digital copy...thanks,it was hard to find at indigo but I know what 🐧 books look like,it was sitting in the wrestling section, took me more than 5 minutes to find it.the guy at Starbucks was nice though he recommended chocolate chips on my green tea frapaccino.
He's in my neck of the woods! yay!!!
omg the VIEW @ 28:50 or so! gonna have to ride this someday
incredible! WOW! amazing.
This is not watts... this is WATTS !!! ⚡️
Phil go and do Alpe d'Huez!! You've gotta see what you can do against Pantani's 1995 time and Lance's 2003 time trial!!!!
He did it this summer www.strava.com/activities/1678354769
Phil you have the COOLEST skinsuit!
Wait til you see the world champ one!
Amazing job Phil. Now entertainment purposes you gotta get the infamous Chris Horner out on one of these epic Strava endeavors. You know he’s having a pretty crappy retirement. Congrats!
Great video. Any chance of listing the song credits?
What about those skateboarders? Now, that is a road rash wish about to come true.
Also, Phil goes up about as fast as I come down GMR. My goal on the GMR and GRR is to complete, not compete.
Hey Don Wonderful!
would be cool to see a gear ratio too if there is a way to get that with like di2 or srams electronic stuff
Phil is an F'n UNIT
No song credits?
He is a beast
Phil, ride the Leadville 100 next year!
There is A LOT going on on that stretch of road.
4:43 YOU DONT need to GOOGLE: "How my weight affects my climbing uphills :))"
Great views..... this a weekday?
WOW 🤜🏻
I keep looking down and looking back up and he's still fucking climbing
You rock
Those cars!
The black lines all over the road, are they repaired cracks (flush) or are they holes in surface?
Repaired cracks
Marc Robinson Cheers 👍
Downhill longboarder at 11:31
He's way, way better here than when he raced (and beat) Cancellara, for instance. It's scary.
Great reminder. Im just a local racer
anyone know the song at 16:00?
V nice
9:14 that guy in blue is still wondering who was the guy blazing on the other side of the road
Phil. Will you please try Alpe d'Huez. In 2019. Just so we know. Please! Please! Pretty please!
...before you're too old for it to mean anything ;-).
Yep, that's the difference between being a pro rider, and NOT being pro!!
Holy crap that's a lot of power out put!!!
Retired but still strong as heck :-) :-) :-)
I knew I recognized Travis
Lol I think Larson C. Is not happy about this new KOM 😂👍😁🚴♀️🚴♀️
RIST in Ft Collins Colorado, Held by Gavin. Do it.
Those 2 civic drivers smh
Fucking smashed it!
Inspirational cookie consuming beast.
Well hey I can do that like two minutes so that's something
Hey man 500W for 2 minutes is nothing to sneeze at. Good on you.
Bit of bad overtaking from car, motor bike had to stop crazy!!!!
The "Crotch Rocket" riders are about as bad there as they are here
on Palomar
Cadence FTW
The donut guy didn't have a chance. Just to many donuts.
Grizzbys is life.
Wtf with those drivers around the 33:00!
Wow, that was amazing! Why you did not ride like this when you were a pro?! You could have been paid a lot of money. Now you have the worst retirement ever LOL
Jesus, you know someone’s OP when they descend a 4% the same speed they go up it
30:46 ricers man, I swear
Jerry Lewis and your background music may be huge in France, but here in SoCal....
Fully Natty bra. Phil "The Cookie Monster" Gaimon
That’s right
the racers in the tdc did this at the end of a long stage, this cat is starting fresh
Jesus, those fucking ricers nearly killed that poor motorcyclist (not to mention Phil).
Wtf I missed the long boarders
11:34
Isn't this a DQ for having donuts instead of cookies?
