Elvin knew that. He was kicking it around for a year or more. He brought in Mickey as backing vocalist, when he needed another song for “Struttin’ My Stuff”, the producer suggested Fooled Around, but he could never make it work in his blues singer/guitarist style. He suggested Mickey take a stab at it, because he knew a tenor voice would work well with it. The result was pure magic.

1975, as a 6yr old black kid, from Midwest,r&b in my house. Shouts to WLS in Chicago for blending the music culture! Turned me on to Fleetwood Mac and many others that I still enjoy today👏
This takes me back to 1974 when Elvin first played me the new song he was working on. I says to him "Elvin", I says, "you got yourself a nice little tune here, but "I Fucked Around and Caught the Clap' may not be the most commercial title." He took my advice to heart and here we all are a half century later!
Mr. Bishop wisely chose Mr. Thomas to sing lead on this song, but the resultant success was far beyond all expectations. Kudos to each person who had a hand in its success, especially Mr. Thomas.
I too was 14 when this song was a hit. Man can he sing. This was the slow song you wanted to skate with the girls to. 🕺🏻❤️ The 70s was a great time to be young in America. At least in my world it was.
I was 11 years old diggin' this song. 49 years later, I've fooled around & fell in love so many times I'm still trippin' over myself. And trippin' on how telling this piece of gold is. Sing it Elvin. Tell us how it really is.
I was thinking about this. It is one of the most killer blues based vocals. I alway liked Edgar Winters “Dying to Live” from White Trash, too. Greatest in Rock? I dunno, that’s subjective you have Steven Perry what made it look easy; Greg Lake and Jon Anderson in Prog Rock. Man, too many singers in too many categories. Start naming them only to realize the ones you’re forgetting. What do you do with McCartney; Roderick David Stewart? I think Gilmour and Waters did great vocals, but there was so much to Floyd. Then you start thinking about black Yanks and… well it staggers the mind! But thanks for bringing it up!
Really good song . I graduated high school . I should've appreciated this kind of music more back then , because there hasn't been much to compare since then .
This song sounds as good today or better than when released. I listen to this track on my headphones and it just blows my mind. Grew up with this music and find it still stands up today.

Hey macmor- Couldn't agree more! Throw in Dylan doing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", some vintage Tower of Power, David Clayton Thomas, Jay Black, Roy Orbison.....oh man...I hope the island next to yours is for sale!
He's a hell of a singer
He still is, too.
Damn his vocals are just scary good .. so much confidence and control ...
I didn’t scare
The female accompanying him is no joke. She can stay right with him.
All round brilliant! The gal moved like a female Joe Cocker!
Yes! That's who came to mind when I saw her, Joe Cocker!!!
I said the same thing, she got Joe Crocker down but she got swag to hers. The sister got swag to her performance. Swag on sister, swag on.
In my opinion that is the most accurate and true test of a singer and that is singing live and he proves without a doubt that he's a true singer
Well said. Perfect pitch, timing, feeling.
I listened to this song on the radio a thousand times when it came out and thought no big deal. I know better now.
Same, who would have thought this was as good as it would get, a high-water mark.
Never, never tire of this absolute classic song. 👍
This may be the best vocal performance in Rock and roll history. A long-forgotten song before Mickey Thomas ask Elvin Bishop if he could sing
I was born in July 1974, so I’m sure I first heard this as a little baby. I’m still listening at 48.
I was a freshman when this incredibly amazing song came out.... LONG LIVE THE 70'S !!!
Right on!
Was 13 when this came out. Played on the radio frequently. Never forgot it. And thanks to this great technology we have, we can play this song and have a video with it.
OMF….what I wouldn’t give to go back to those days 💕♥️💕
@Lisa there's no school like the old school
@@JerryHall-ot9jh isn’t that true, Jer? So much!
This song will NEVER GET OLD! I LOVE IT!😍
One of the top 10 best songs ever! Amazing voice!
This is a song you never get tired of listening to and Mickey Thomas voice is incredible.
Lawd have mercy he SANG that!!!! Mickey Thomas!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥
This is the other song that my husband and I had as our songs! 2 of them! 44 years and still going strong! Love this song ❤
I can see why starship grabbed Micky to sing for them. What a voice
instablaster...
Who is Micky ?
Who is Micky ?
@@robertmcfarland620 The Man singing.
Omg…you’re asking “who is Mickey????” Wtf!
Natural talent right there people no autotune
Totally. It's called practice and releasing 2 lost words in today's music industry.
I meant to say rehersing, my bad.
@@billskalicky5400 Both words are correct 💯😊
@billskalicky5400 you can edit comments.
A real underrated classic. Mickey Thomas was one of the premiere voices of my generation and does not get recognized enough.
1975, as a 6yr old black kid, from Midwest,r&b in my house. Shouts to WLS in Chicago for blending the music culture! Turned me on to Fleetwood Mac and many others that I still enjoy today👏
xrt? lup?
Right on WLS...I would pick up its signal on my transister radio at night in mid Michigan.
Sending light n love my brotha ... 😢
His backup singer was awesome.
What was her name? I think I seen a clip with her singing with Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds too.
@@michelledeaton5014 her name is Reni Slais
Reminds me of Joe Cocker with her arms.
Mickey Thomas was the most undeeratered singers. He had a great
@@michelledeaton5014I think that that was Helen Reddy. Similar look though
They just don't make music like this anymore... no auto tune, no synthesizers, just pure talent. Mickey had a Golden Voice.
Elvin was born to write this timeless classic and Micky Thomas was born to sing it ❤
Fell in love in 1968 and I am still in love with same lady. 55 years ago and I guess you could say "I fooled around and fell in love!"
Me pasa lo mismo y quiero saber quien era antes de morir
This takes me back to 1974 when Elvin first played me the new song he was working on. I says to him "Elvin", I says, "you got yourself a nice little tune here, but "I Fucked Around and Caught the Clap' may not be the most commercial title." He took my advice to heart and here we all are a half century later!
best live vocal I've ever heard.....whew!!!!!!
Timeless masterpiece we will never have music like this again..
One of my all-time favorite bands, & songs. Mickey absolutely one of the best singers to grace a stage.
I was 3 in 1975 and I swear I remember listening to this song and loving it! Still do
Back in the day when we were young and carefree.
I was 14 too! 💕🌸💕
I was 11 years old diggin' this song. 49 years later, I've fooled around & fell in love so many times I'm still trippin' over myself. And trippin' on how telling this piece of gold is. Sing it Elvin. Tell us how it really is.
1st kiss from a boy from Bamberg SC at the ripe old age of 13 to this song - To Steve, wherever you are.....
Nice
Probably my favorite song of all time! Great performance on The Midnight Special. Brings back a lot of memories.
I agree. This song can bring me to tears even now today seeing as it's now what 48 years old😊
Maravilloso, que calidad y entrega, infinito, infinito, muy lejos de los actuales indecentes.
Is this the greatest vocal performance ever?
It does rank way up there.
It's pure, powerful, genuine, smooth & sexy as hell.
Beautiful!
Odd question, as it's one that only you can answer. And when you do answer yourself, that answer is applicable to only one person: you.
Really good song . I graduated high school . I should've appreciated this kind of music more back then , because there hasn't been much to compare since then .
Elvin Bishop played for our senior class in '74, thought this style of music would last forever but the world had other ideas😢
This song sounds as good today or better than when released. I listen to this track on my headphones and it just blows my mind. Grew up with this music and find it still stands up today.
Mickey Thomas has a unique amazing voice and the female back up singer is wow a great backup vocal
Been listening to this since I was a teen in the 80s and I never realized who the singer was, I thought it was Elvin Bishop! Mickey Thomas is incredibly soulful, and this is till a beautiful song. Love this performance.
Look at his eyes, I bet this is a true song to him.
True...he sings with genuine passion and emotion 💛😊
Outstanding live performance
2023 love this song ❤🇺🇸. You know they’re showing jumpsuits like this in the fall fashions 😂 my mom always said styles come back around 😂😂. Gotta love it!
Amazing voice, the first verses could easily be a studio version, but then you realize it's all live, crazy skills
Thanks to Mickey Thomas for making this song one that you never get tired of listening to and watching also. Rene does an excellent job on backup vocals. I must have watched this video a ga-zillion times and am now working my 2nd ga-zillion. Thank you very much for the upload!!! .
All live music, no gimmicks just great music. I am so glad to have grown up during this decade. It will never be repeated.
Georgia boy who had a voice that was incredible. What a gift.
I was 9 years old, still remember this on the radio as I sat in the backseat, my parents up front, dad driving...a great period for just about everything!
You "stood" in the back seat?
"Sat," I fixed it bro, thanks. 👍@@fododude
Ive heard this song many times, but this is my first time seeing an actual performance of it being sung live and Im left speechless. What a voice!
Must have watched this at least 20 times since i found this video, great song sung with even greater passion.
This LIVE performance on The Midnight Special completely surpasses the studio recording in every way.
Its also fantastic to be able to SEE the performers giving it their all. They were feeling it!
Kids, this is what real talent looks and sounds like.
That was awsome. What a voice that guy has
That VOICE!!!!! One of the best period. The lady singer is also belting it out as well. A great LIVE performance!
Everyone who was there and saw it live... witnessed a master piece in the making ...top job Elvin Bishop and Mick Thomas ❤❤❤
