  • Not really sure why there are two different rounds and I'm sure you, the viewer, might know the difference. What I do know is that these "tactical" version are a heck of a lot cheaper!

Agencies are getting HSTs for about $0.45 a round. Civilians can find them for $0.55 a round is the cheapest I've found the 124 grain +P HST.

It’s the same stuff. Your ammo companies generally don’t like the distributors to sell to everyday folks because they want us to be stuck buying the 20 round boxes at ~$30. Some retailers cave to that and will only sell to agencies or if you have credentials. Also remember agencies have bean counters and they’re damned sure not going to pay $1.50/round for ammo to go in department guns. I’d genuinely be curious what agencies actually pay for duty ammo. From the retailer I’ve been buying the most from recently, I buy a couple boxes whenever I order ammo. Most recently, the LE marked boxes have been $27.50-28.00.

These chronograph readings are off by quite a bit. It has been a few years now but I ran standard pressure and (+p) through 3", 3.5", 4.25" & 5". I was quite surprised how little difference there was between the 2. Either the 4.25" or 5" were only 25ish fps less with standard pressure. I think the standard was just over 1200 and the (+p) was 1230s 5 shot groups.
If I remember correctly even standard pressure was around 1100 from 3.1" Shield. That is a typical beautifully expanded HST. Thank you Sir.

I carry the 124gr.+P Speer Gold Dot in my EDC Glock 26. It was the same load i carried when i was on the job in my Glock 19.. I found that the 124gr.+P HST performs much like the Gold dot.. So much so that i bought two 50-round boxes of 124gr.+P HST from PSA on one of their daily deals..

There are 3 or 4 9mm, 124 gr ive found to be the best. HST and Gold Dots are great but the important thing to remember is to run 200 rounds of defense ammo through every pistol you intend to carry/use for home defense even if you buy multiple G19s (as an example) each gun may shoot a brand better than the other. I know from experience. HSTs in what i have cycles and shoots accurately in ALL of what i have. Gold Dots hiccuped in some. Results vary from gun to gun within the same model. It's worth not betting your life if needed. It's just my option to eliminate variables you can control.

For a while 10 or so years ago there was no civilian packaged Hst, it was all law enforcement ammo. I believe federal wouldn’t sell for consumer use but you could still buy it from retailers online occasionally. Now it seems federal caved to the demand and made a “civilian” packaged hst. I’d guess if anything it might not have the primer sealant

    • @007Chancellor

Ive tested approximately 300 various rounds of ammo in different barrel lengths and in the 9mm, .40, 45acp, 357 sig, 357 mag and the 10mm. The HST always performs good and the 147 grain 9mm is probably the perfect 9mm round! I can tell you that short barrels in the sub compacts performs the least! The standard barrel at 4 & 1/4 or 4 & 1/2 inch barrels perform in second place! The absolute best test comes from the 4" barrel which is in the compact pistols! The compact pistol 4" barrel will give you the best performance! The HST always out performs the Gold dot by penetration and expansion!

Gold Dot will never tie with HST. It will come close and is a good alternative round. The real question here is why you continued with a failed video. Your equipment failed. You didn't shoot an HST and a Gold Dot. Why didn't you just pack up and come back when you had the problems worked out. Could have been an interesting video. I was a homicide detective when our Department adopted the black talon (HST's original name) and attended the autopsies of bad guys who had been shot with with it. The damage was monumental.
