Correct…the song is about coming of age. The lyrics tell the story of a boy on his 16th birthday attempting to buy condoms at a chemist.

Plus the actual embarrassment of asking for them at the counter. Too young to buy them at a dispenser in a pub (although we were going in to pubs at 15/16 back then). Youthful optimism shall we say. We live in a different age today.

..and then later, in a barbershop. _"Something for the weekend sir?"_ - i grappled with that question for *years* wondering what on earth my hairdresser was trying to offer me - frankly one of the reasons i bought clippers and began doing it meself - until finally realising they were one of the traditional purveyors of that particular recreational requisite..

Madness were one of the best and brightest bands of their era. Such a great, daft sense of fun and serious musical chops. Coincidentally last night, here in UK, there was a tv program called, Suggs - My Life Story ( Suggs being the lead singer ). It wasn't just a documentary though. It was a complete stage show by Suggs detailing his whole life, interspersed with all the great Madness tunes. It was both hilarious and deeply touching. Long Live The Nutty Boys!!

Watched the documentary on the Madness videos. They were pretty much all shot in a single day and the band got to make suggestions, some of which were adopted. You can see the influence of silent movies, Monty Python and Lewis Carrolls' Alice in Wonderland (plus a hint of The Prisoner TV series). I think the moustachioed hairdresser was actually a local hairdresser in his own salon, all the places being genuine. They also included reaction shots from their filming ('Baggy Trousers' is full of them), so the little boy was kept in on purpose.

A lot of people have already confirmed you're spot on about the song's theme, Jay (even though the 'lion' thing was a bit of a red herring!) , but there's a bittersweet historical note here too.
In 1982, if the song's protagonist wanted to buy a condom he had little option but to go to the chemist's (pharmacy, or drugstore in US parlance) and go through the embarrassing ritual of asking for one over the counter. As others have noted, the code-speak used in a chemist's or barber's for this transaction was well-known, and this had been going on for decades. The song, playing it for laughs, takes it to absurd extremes, but by and large it's representative of what the kid would actually have had to do.
However, this was pretty much the last moment in time where this was still true.
Within just the next handful of years the "big disease with the little name" (to bring things back around to Prince) was making its ravages felt across the Western world, and suddenly the need to make condoms more easily available and accessible became overbearing. Only a few years later, he could have simply popped to the supermarket and picked up a packet no differently from grabbing a chocolate bar or a can of Coke. So inadvertently House Of Fun became a historical snapshot, of a slice of British life that was about to disappear forever.

So, so true! I was an 80s teen, and remember buying my first box off the shelves at Superdrug, to still be given the raised eyebrow by the cashier passing comment, "You're a bit young for these, aren't you?" to which I replied, "No, I just look it, but thanks for making my responsibility awkward..." Luckily, this kind of attitude was on the way out thanks to the branding of Virgin 'Mates' being sold in record shops.

In the UK in the 1970's and early 1980's it was taboo to talk about condoms ( until AIDS broke out and the rest is history) so as a 16 year old lad he was asking for condoms, but in a roundabout way when he talks about 'Party poppers that pop in the night', 'Box of balloons with a featherlight touch'. The picture in the barbers when the barbers cut Suggs hair, was seen in all the barber shops in the 70's and '80's in the UK. I became a big madness fan the first time I saw them at 17 years old on TOTP in 1979. I remember my girl cousin and I couldn't wait for their next single release, because we knew that the video would be funny. We laughed our socks off when we saw the guys dressed as middle aged women dancing in the chemist. And yeah first time we saw it we knew what it was about, we were all the same generation. I'm 60 years old now , still listening to Madness, gone to a few of their concerts too, that are always packed.

This song is famous for many reasons, and one of them is "THE MISTAKE" during the recording...
Somehow happened that the "W" in the verse "Welcome to the house of fun" wasn't recorded properly, so first letter of the word was missing "Elcome"... So back in the day they have to make cut and paste on physical medium, on the TAPE. So that is why the "W" in "Welcome" sounds little bit weird and emphasized.
You can check Wikipedia that I am right!

This is normal for this band! When they first started, the band agreed that when it stopped being fun they would stop being a band. They are still playing and touring.
