Songs like this are exactly why some folks get bent out of shape over terms like "One Hit Wonder". Just because Madness only had one huge US hit doesn't mean they weren't absolute pop monsters in their time. You're still just getting started, too. Give us some "House of Fun" next, for more of their early, nutty Ska sound. And check out "My Girl" for more of a solid Pop standard. And then you'll be halfway through their biggest hits. :)

@@davelewis8270 Yeah. "Our House" made US#7 in 1983 (and did well on the Rock and Dance charts, too), but it's their only significant US hit. "It Must Be Love" only made it to US#33 and never got a ton of airplay. Nothing else by Madness even cracked the US Top40, though.
Ultimately, it does make sense. Madness is VERY British. Their sound, their themes, their accents, and everything. I think that's one of their biggest strengths, but it's not hard to see how it would undercut their appeal outside of UK markets.
Sadly, the whole 2Tone Ska thing missed mainstream America, entirely. Sure, some New Wave dance clubs in major cities and some hip college stations gave them play, but Top40 radio? Not at all. The Specials, The Selector, The Beat, etc. didn't even crack the US Hot100. "Mirror in the Bathroom" did chart at US#22 on the dance chart, but that's a specialty market and not a particularly high placement.
In the mid-to-late 90s, the US had its own (far inferior) Ska-Punk revival, and the newer wave of acts frequently name-dropped the 2-Tone movement, which helped establish Ska and the Postpunk Ska revival more firmly in the US canon of classics. The New Wave/Postpunk revival of the 00s also helped lend those acts more hipness and legitimacy for US listeners who thought Ska was just bro music for California skate-punks in the 90s.

I'm guessing the stunt is either the backflip into the pool or taking an electric guitar underwater.
Also, it's a cover - the original is by Labi Siffre, the smiling chap who you see taking the sunglasses off near the end.
So glad to see you watching more Madness - if there's any more to do, "Night Boat to Cairo" and "Wings of a Dove" take them in yet more wonderful directions!

If you were a kid of the 80's in the UK, Madness was a big part of it. There wasn't a single kid that didn't love them, or wanted to learn the saxophone because of them. It's so strange that such a lighthearted fun band could have such a big influence on British culture, but they did. I think it's also the reason why they didn't break America, because at the time 80's America was all about looking cool and showing off. Madness had that self depreciating British trait of not taking themselves too seriously, which I think was a bit of an alien concept in Ronald Reagan's America.

this song is the audio equivalent of that feeling you get when you wake up in the morning after the first night you've spent with someone you have just realized that you're crazy in love with. as you open your eyes & realize that special person is still next to you & a smile starts to grow on your face & your heart swells... that is precisely what this song feels like to me.

I heard & really connected with the original of this from Labi Saffri (he appeared at the end of the video smiling) and when I heard this version it just added to the beauty of the lyrics with a kicking sound.
One of my all time favourite songs

My Mum and Dad are huge madness fans, my dad one night picked up Suggs and a friend in his black cab and asked Suggs to meet my mum who was working in a pub, Suggs agreed to it and it was amazing. At the time there was a pub singer, Suggs went up on the stage and picked up the mic. The singer went to turn around ready to fight until he realised who it was, he sang 2 songs, had a pint and my dad took them anywhere they wanted no charge the rest of the night

I LOVED MADNESS - from the age of 8 yrs old! You were either a Ska or a Mod - I was kinda a Mod until MADNESS - I switched camps overnight - brilliant band! you should listen to 'My Girl', 'Wings of a Dove'', 'Shut Up', 'House Of Fun''. MORE Madness - the KINGS OF SKA!🏁😎🎷

You do realise that Madness went all pop after their first album in 1979 don't you? Apart from a couple of songs after obviously but really their only ska album was their first one whereas The Specials kept to their Ska roots.

I am an old cynic, hardened by the trials and tribulations that life places in front of you. It was either get tough or die the way I spent my early years. Love my metal, blues, punk etc...
But there is one thing guaranteed to bring a little ray of positivity and joy into this old blackened heart and make me smile; it is Madness.
    peace - out

The musicality of Madness is crazy! The arrangements, the clever use of syncopation by off-beats saying more by not saying it, by space in the music, the potency of understatement... Also the key changes, very clever, on tunes like 'Our house' too, where the key changes go all around the houses before going back home. Mad or Genius... Fine line! Oh & Suggs, then, just class for the frontman too!
