  • After last weeks reaction to Simpson's, the comments wanted one thing... Hot Fuzz. In this video, I react to some of the best scenes from Edgar Wright's cult classic giving my thoughts as an ex-Police Officer. How realistic is it? I break down some of the clips and give my thoughts, what would I have done differently to Sgt Nicholas Angel? What a film this is. What else would you like to see me react to? Let me know in the comments!

    Fun fact about Hot Fuzz: the shop was a genuine shop, and the glass display was a real one. Very expensive to replace so to avoid damaging it and having to replace it they made the powder sparks make it look like bullet proof glass. They still ended up cracking one of the panels when they ran the trolleys into it, so ho hum.

      In the follow up all the pubs were real too (the names were changed for the filming), apart from the final one they're all in Letchworth town centre (The Worlds End pub is in Welwyn, the second garden city where the film starts off in). The disco is actually the local cinema (The Broadway) in real life and because the owners refused to give back the frontage from the movie still is as it was in the film. All the production vehicles were stored at night a couple of hundred metres from my back garden.

      I wasn't based in Bradford, I was actually a member of a different force in the Yorkshire & Humber region.
      Every now and again all four forces would pool a number of their specialist resources such as Traffic, Road Crime Unit, Armed Response, Dog Section and Proactive Team etc and hit a town, city, district or county to go after high-risk offenders, people wanted on warrant, disrupt organised crime groups, proactively search for dealers, burglars and car thieves and provide a high visibility presence in the community. They're called "Impact Days".
      I had plenty of wool on my back in my home force, but this was my very first experience of operating in Bradford. It could not have been more different than were I was based at the time, and that was a rough town lol
      Every other vehicle seemed to have no insurance, loads of people gave false details or used a family member's name to try and deceive us, loads of young lads driving hig-end motors otherwise in accordance with a licence or actually disqualified, and so many (not all I must admit) had zero respect for the police or the law in general.
      Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire is very similar.

We went to Wells (Sandford) and toured some of the shooting locations, found the layby in the decapitation scene & my mate posed by the 'Welcome to Wells' sign with his warrant card. Pegg's signed flak jacket is on the wall of a pub. Fun trivia: the mad santa who stabs Pegg in the hand is Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. Kate Blanchett is unrecognisable in the forensic kit but plays Pegg's ex. She went on to play Galadriel in LOTR. Martin Freeman of course, was Bilbo in the Hobbit. I have a mate who was an inspector until very recently. He's always said there are a lot of insider police jokes in that film. Sandford?

    • @Blazcowitz1943
      @Blazcowitz1943 2 года назад +10

      It is true that many of the jokes in the movie were taken from the stories the filmmakers heard about real events and stories concerning police, such as Nick Angel not being able to understand the local farmer but his colleagues understanding it fine.

    Another great vid. Our Ben is a great insight to the person behind the uniform. They are not all bad. I'd still keep my wits about me though, but I would always be respectful at the same time. I've seen coppers in real life, that wouldn't come close to the Hot Fuzz guys. I've got a pretty good 'winging it' radar. Respect is earned, not given 👍

    “I’ve never fired my gun up in the air. 1- cause I don’t have a gun & 2- I’ve never had a reason too “ and most importantly for anyone watching… “WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN”. You’ve a real risk of showering a load of bullets up in the air only to get three lodged in your brain once gravity takes over.

    Supermarkets are good for action scenes because they have lots of explodable gubbins to fill the screen. You can crash through a shelf unit and send boxes flying everywhere, or shoot down a drinks aisle and thr screen is erupting with glass and colourful fluid in blast waves.

    My old man, this is going back way before I was born. He was I'm the woods with my uncle and a few mates then found an unexploded world war 2 era shell. Long story short, they were throwing it back and forth until my Nan said, "Take that to the police station immediately! My Dad drops it on the desk, and the constable on duty is panicking, trying to get the bomb squad down. Ended up in the local papers at the time.
    For those wondering, yes, you can still find the article it's in the Bucks Free Press. Have a look through their archives.

    Cobra's not the only film with a cool supermarket action sequence. In FX2: The Deadly Art of Illusion, the main character is trapped by the baddie in a supermarket. Being a movie special effects expert, he's able to use things he finds on the shelves to improvise traps.

    I always wondered If police could commandere a car belonging to a member of the general public. In the event you do have to do this. What are the regulations around it? Can you drive it like an emergency vehicle? What happens in the event of damage? Does the owner just have to stand there like a wally and wait for you to bring their motor back? 🤣🤣🤣🤣great video as always Ben 👌

    • @gbjanuary
      @gbjanuary 2 года назад

      Any damage would be for the police to cover so guess you would need permission from senior officer and owner.

    I have a question, are all British police governed by the same agency? Because as an American it seems weird to me that the London Metro Police can transfer an officer to some department in the country.
    That said, if that is the case, as a former American cop, I am a little envious, because having a central agency that handled all the hiring, firing, and payroll for all police officers, at least for the state, would solve a lot of huge social issues with American policing, where some of our bad officers can simply drift from department to department, with little accountability.

    I'm a retired teacher. We had a PCSO attached to the school, so I take my form into assembly and the Headmaster (we went to school together, known him years.) introduces the PCSO as PC Nicholas Angel honest that was his name. And I'm grinning manically and the head is giving me the death stare. Then the PC does his talk and gets to the end of his presentation and I know what's coming and the Head knows whats coming and he's glaring at me again and the PC goes: 'Any questions.' I just couldn't keep a straight face.
    And the rest of the staff after were like 'What was that all about with you and the head.' And I tried to explain and none of them had seen the film.
