Hey guys fun fact my old art teacher designed and made the miniature Sanford set at the end of the film
Hot Fuzz is probably the closest to a "perfect" movie ever made. Everything is set up properly, every scene is filled with so many details it shouldn't be possible and the editing is absolutely flawless.
Not a second wasted. Every inch is either foreshadowing, a set up, or a pay off.
The transitions are so great!
Movies with Mikey has a brilliant episode covering this. It's so good, i highly recommend looking it up.
Absolutely. One of only 5 movies, I've given a 10/10 rating to and on a technical level it is absolutely the most perfect of those 5.
It's the definition of all killer no filler.
Tight script, great performances, brilliant editing, fantastic direction... Just exceptional.

They literally spell everything out for you! It just never occurs to you that the lines have so much meaning.

The line "A love strucken Romeo..." from the Dire Straights played on Skinner's radio when he drove away from the 'road crash'.
Considering that our terrible actor played Romeo so horribly, it was kind of fitting.
Later on it was another line from a song that played on Skinner's radio: "And I bring you... fire" from the song "Fire" by the 'Crazy World of Arthur James Brown.
Better known as "I am the god of hellfire, and I bring you.... FIRE!"
Right when he drove up to the charred husk of the Fridge Magnate beyond the police cordon.
I love that EVERYTHING in this movie is so revealing once you dissect it.

That was a little dig at the studio - they wanted them to include some bigger names so they cast Cate Blanchett and made her unrecognisable.
Another celebrity gag they pull is the ranking of officers at the station in regards to that actors current fame, starting from tv to film to UKs beloved
Also, fun fact about Hot Fuzz; The village of Sandford is a police in-joke.
In the exams or training exercises the UK police participate in the location where all of the training events happen is called Sandford. So them saying "This is Sandford, nothing ever happens around here." was a joke specifically for the UK cops in the audience.

I loved it because it was real. You don't pull punches regardless of age or gender when the subject is armed. Most movies would be afraid to depict that.

Fun fact: a really big expense in the movie was the rights to show the DVDs of Bad Boys and Point Break. Edgar Wright said that the shot of all the DVDs was probably the most expensive shot in the whole film.

Simon Pegg’s face during the “homage” to Romeo and Juliet is iconic. The way they’re dressed, the gun, and the song they sang are all references to the Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of the play starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
But that movie is so good lol
It's my favorite joke of the movie. Its literally the most hackneyed version of Romeo and Juliet that could be preformed and I would pay so much money to see it.

I love how Danny gets to do everything he asked Angel if he’d done by the end of the movie. Great writing
Very similar to Shaun of the Dead where the entire plot of the movie is planned out by Ed at the beginning. I don’t remember all the details, but it’s stuff like “then we’ll stumble back here, play some pool, maybe get a quick bite” and at the end of the movie they literally stumble back there (because they’re pretending to be zombies), fight the zombies off with pool cues, and Ed gets bitten.
Apparently the car chase is Timothy Dalton's favourite scene he's ever had to do, hell he enjoyed doing this movie so much he showed up first thing in the morning to film scenes where he wasn't gonna be on camera just so Simon Pegg had someone to work with in the Manager's Office scene (they filmed the same scenes focusing on Dalton the day before)

When he was a young actor working on his first movie The Lion in Winter with Katharine Hepburn he was in a similar situation. His first scene on his first day shooting was sitting opposite Katharine & they filmed her face on doing her line & cut at the end of the day saying “Katharine you can have the day off” when they were to film his response. She said “but I talk to Tim in the scene! I am coming in tomorrow morning” & she came in the following day just to say the line to him from off camera. He obviously remembered how this big star treated him as a rookie actor & vowed to do the same for others he worked with. Nice guy as well as a fantastic actor.
I love how tight this script is, perfect example of “Chekhov’s Gun” where everything shown/discussed in Act 1 & 2 pays off in Act 3.
Literally everything single thing in the film is either a set-up, a pay-off, or both. Incredible
They have an entire Chekhov's armoury, including a Chekhov's sea mine.

Fun fact: the fight at the supermarket (grocery store that Skinner owns), is an old chain from the U.K. called sommerfields. Simon Pegg dubbed it "the battle of sommerfield", a reference to the battle of somme, which is in itself genius. The whole film is very British and a lot of jokes are almost inside jokes if you know the kind of area this is set in.
A lot of the guns they use in the store are WWI ish vintage too.

This is Edgar Wright's best film. Say what you will about Shaun of the Dead, The World's End, Baby Driver, or Last Night in Soho. They all have their strengths, absolutely, but not one of them is as well written, tightly edited, or quotably funny as HF.

Seeing people reconcile that the motive breaks down to "they made the village look bad" so most of the "crimes" are extremely petty is always so fun.

It's also honestly realistic in a way. Most crimes are crimes of passion, and are often for the stupidest of reasons.

Spotted a foreshadowing for the first time that I haven't seen any other videos note, when at the fair shooting game, the fella says to Angel "take down all the people and you get to walk away with the monkey" the monkey being Danny.
Danny accidentally shooting the doctor in the foot with the air-rifle on the shooting stand. Exactly the same foot he shot him with his shotgun when he threw it away in the big gunfight.

I've always wondered if there was a running 'ape' joke through Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. In Shaun Of The Dead, Ed says 'Shall I do Clyde?' in reference to his Gorilla impression, in Hot Fuzz, Danny is symbolised by the cuddly monkey.

This is my favourite of the trilogy, it just hits with every line and every shot and delivers a callback on every single thing that's setup. The clash of small country town and hot police action is just genius. I loved the disbelief of your faces at the motives - petty small town grievences - was perfect.

Even though Timothy Dalton is the most obvious villain casting. Some of the NWA is made up by known villain actors. The Doctor played Don Raphael in The Mask of Zorro. The Priest was Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ivan Ooze in The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie.
Oh my GOD, the priest is Belloq AND Ivan Ooze?? Ivan Ooze is played by the same guy who played Belloq?? WHY have i never known this fact before??

When they run from the mine they jump over a hedge. The only reason they can jump over it is because the farmer clipped it, which is why they were there in the first place.
It's called "The Cornetto Trilogy" because in every one of them, one of the main characters eats a Cornetto ice cream on screen. In this it's blue, in Shaun Of The Dead it's red and in The World's End it's green.
Also, Nick's girlfriend at the start is played by Cate Blanchett, which I didn't realise for years.

Edgar Wright, the master of the edit. So efficient never wastes a shot. Everything is in service of telling the story. And the script is so, so clever too. Masterful stuff.
I love Aaron sitting up when the murderer shows up. You can see him instantly being more interested and wondering what's going to happen :D.
Love this movie.

There’s so many subtle things you don’t catch the first watch. The neighbourhood watch alliance being the group name, the N.W.A 😂, and the fact that Skinner plays Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits in his car as he drives away after the two that played them have been killed were two for me. Olivia Colman’s dirty jokes are great but the one when she’s looking at the spit roast and says “that’s me after a couple of pints” 😂
This movie begs to be watched multiple times. I've seen it a ton and I'm still finding new callbacks/ payoffs.

The fact Americans don't realise Olivia Colman had an entire comedy acting career in Britain before she switched to dramatic roles.
I really miss seeing Nick Frost and Simon Pegg do these type of movies. Their chemistry is just amazing! Great reaction guys. I don’t know why I’m so surprised you know who Bill Bailey is but that’s so cool to me.

Just a heads up for the "why did you swerve?!" Swans in England and Wales are owned by the queen and harming one is technically illegal. While she only really exercises that owner ship in the area of the Windsor and down the River Themes, it's just sort of taboo to hurt a swan in the rest of England.
Mate, my cousin and a few others spent the day shooting rabbits which had overridden a particular area, then he almost crashed the Landrover, on the way home, swerving to avoid a bloody rabbit!
I know, it makes no sense.
People brake and swerve in order to avoid killing things. It has nowt to do with who is supposed to own them.
I might argue this is a perfect movie, only ever gets better with rewatches.

Love that they cast edward Woodward, the original 1980's 'Equalizer' as the head of the neighbourhood watch. He also starred in the Wicker man which this film definitely pays homage to.
Billie Whitelaw - the woman who ran the hotel - was also in the Wicker Man. Edgar Wright told her during shooting that someone was remaking it and she was horrified (an entirely reasonable response given how the Nic Cage version turned out)
Aaron’s theory that the living statue was the murderer was one of the things I enjoyed most about this reaction. And Rick’s constant hysterics. Such a great movie, it was fun watching it with you all.

One thing you may not be aware of. The code for the evidence locker is 999, which is the UK emergency services number, equivalent to your 911.
With the cameos, the Santa who stabs him in the hand was Peter Jackson, and Janine was Cate Blanchett. So you have three people from LotR / The Hobbit. Bob from the crime scene was Joe Cornish, who directed and wrote Attack the Block. He used to do the Adam & Joe Show with Adam Buxton, who played Tim Messenger in this.
This film has a lot of the best foreshadowing of any movie, ever.
The colour of the Cornetto in each movie relates to the story. Red for blood in Shaun of the Dead. Blue for police in Hot Fuzz. Green for who the bad guys are in The World's End.
I've seen this movie dozens of times and just recently I caught something I've missed that's one of my favorite setups. The Andys say something like "you wanna play big cop in a small town? why don't you go fuck about the model village?" and that's where Angel ends up in his final fight. So many quick lines, everything is setup, I love how when Angel is taking out members of the NWA they are all designed to look like accidents, this is such a perfect movie.
What I love about this movie is it gave so many legendary British character actors one more chance in their later years to be in a big blockbuster close to home and have fun with old friends. The behind the scenes stuff looked genuinely like the atmosphere on set was laughter and camaraderie all the way and it shows on screen.
Such a great way for Simon and Edgar to honour the on screen heroes of their youth
I see it a different way. Pegg, Frost and Wright are funny, clever people who have made friends across the spectrum of the British acting world. So, in answer to the question,
"Are you doing anything next 'whenever'? There is no money in it, but it will be a laugh," everyone showed up for a few hours, or days, or weeks, for 'shits and giggles'.
Nobody was given 'one more chance', they were there because they knew it would be good and also, a production of 'laughter and camaraderie all the way'.
I have seen this movie roughly eight billion times. To see Aaron quoting that “Fascist” “Hag” exchange at the end after just one watch filled my heart with joy. You guys are the best.
We just spent a week in the village where this was filmed. It was so great seeing all these locations. My favorite comedy of all time

The bad play is actually the stage version of the ridiculous 1996 "modern take" on the play.

I have never seen another movie so thoroughly apply the concept of chekhov's gun. It seems like in the first three quarters of the movie, nearly every line of dialogue, every character, every literal gun has a later payoff. It's insane.
It's worthy to note that the beginning foreshadows the twist, as in what happens to Angel mirrors the town. He was making them look bad and was "disappeared" with him even saying "you can't just make people disappear" being replied to with "yes I can, I'm the chief inspector."
You have no idea how long your British viewers have been waiting for this one.
The funniest and most memorable scene of this whole movie is the old man with the extremely thick countryside British accent (played by David Bradley aka Mr. Filtch from Harry Potter) and the 3 person telephone game needed to understand him!

Also Walter Frey in GoT. And Jim Broadbent, who played Inspector Butterman , also played Archmaester Ebrose who mentored Sam in the Citadel. And Professor Slugthorn.
i love the shot where danny “stabs” nick. it has such a great double meaning. the first time you watch it, nick looking in shock at his chest is “oh god, he betrayed me”. then the second time it’s him processing “why didn’t that hurt? oh, because of the notebook, OH he’s on my side ok i’ll play along”. and it works perfectly for both. so good.
“they don’t have any police guns?!” well, no. it’s england lol. police forces here have specific firearms teams but not every officer has a gun. and i don’t even know if a town as small as the one in this film would have such a team or not.
Hot Fuzz is one of my favorite comedy movies, if not my #1 favorite. Simon Pegg is a genius and I love him

After seeing Timothy Dalton's performance in this movie, I would be very surprised if he didn't absolutely love doing this.
Reason why it is called a cornetto trilogy:
The name originates from a "silly joke" during the promotion of Hot Fuzz. Wright had written in Cornetto ice cream as a hangover cure for Frost's character in Shaun of the Dead, based on his own experiences.
"I can't tell anyone apart!" Yes Aaron... that's the joke xD this movie is hilarious. Kind of like a british Naked Gun.
Such a great way of putting it. Never thought of that before. Great job
When I 1st saw this in the cinema, it immediately went into my top 10. Nothing had made me laugh as much and as loudly since the likes of Airplane & Blazing Saddles, especially when the farmer's mother is drop kicked, the comedic horror of Tim's murder, & "nothing like a bit of girl on girl" from future Oscar winner Olivia Coleman.
The editing is superb, as is the casting (a who's who of great British talent, including the original Equaliser, Edward Woodwood), and the soundtrack, ie. Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) is the song playing from Skinner's car when he drives by the traffic 'accident'.
Trivia: Bill Bailey, the desk officer, known primarily as a brilliant musical comedian, won 2020's Strictly Come Dancing, the UK's version of Dancing with the Stars.☺
Here’s a fun bit of trivia, early in the film’s development Simon Pegg’s character was supposed to have a female love interest, but as the story evolved the character was cut and most of her lines were given to Nick Frost’s character completely unchanged.

Apprently when Timmothy dalton got the call from his agent he hung up on him because he thought they were taking the piss it wasnt until Simon pegg rang him and said look i know you said you had retired but i really want you to be in this film that he read the script and immediatley joined the cast love stories like that

I've seen this movie so many times and still notice new little things each time I watch it. It took me ages to catch the "Fridge Magnate" gag.
Weird how Auntie Jackie's Sister's Brother's Boy played virtually the same role, and had an identical chase-through-the-houses scene, in the third episode of Torchwood the following year.
The part straight after the first murder and Angel picks up the phone in bed and says "Decaffeinated?" Is one of my favourite lines xD

Can't Believe its taken you guys this long to get around to Hot Fuzz... Such a brilliant modern classic and one of, if not Edgar Wright's best film. Timeless comedy and never stops being hilarious!
Love this film! The scene where Danny dives in front of Sgt Angel to take the bullet is a reference to Edgar Wrights old TV show Spaced (which you should totally react to as well!)

With how much you're enjoying the Cornetto Trilogy I would love for you all, with Eric, to do Spaced too. There's only two seasons, seven episodes apiece, so it won't take you long. Simon and Nick super early in their careers, loads of actors you'll recognise from Sci-Fi and British tv/films generally; it's really nerdy and you'll love all the many references throughout and it's a fun time generally.
Do also give Paul a watch too. It's not part of the Trilogy technically but it's still the same duo in a fun, reference-filled film which is definitely worth checking out for some easy watching.

I was just about to recommend spaced. I started rewatching this morning and i can't believe nobody has reacted to it yet.
Definitely my favorite of the three, and my favorite cop movie of all times.
I remember I never had any interest in seeing this movie but I reluctantly agreed to watch it with an ex. Probably the best thing that came out of that relationship 😂 I love this movie so much
There was also Edward Woodward who played Tom Weaver...he was in the main character in the UK tv series "The Equalizer"..1985 - 89
The World's End has some really heavy emotional sadness and grimness to it, which affects how people rate it, but I think its just as great as the rest of the Cornetto Trilogy. And its full of tight editing and quick wit and excitement too.
Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Worlds End are a "trilogy" in one sense. They're known as the Cornetto trilogy. The three flavors are in each movie. So...it's a trilogy but only ice cream wise.

Not a frame of this movie is wasted. Every single moment in it is a joke, a setup, a callback, a reference, or something. It’s one of the most densely packed and best-edited movies ever made, you’ll still notice new things on a fifth viewing.
Wish they would react to Spaced. It’s a short 2 season series and was an earlier collaboration between Wright, Pegg, and Frost. Also has a lot of pop culture references prior to that time (1999).
This movie is pure genius, honoring every sort of movie genre out there, except sci-fi. Comedy, horror, action, suspense, mystery, drama, bromance... Incredible cast as well, aside from Dalton. The script is perfect too with all the callbacks. I never get tired of watching this. It's my favorite Edgar Wright film. Some cameos were Peter Jackson as Santa and Kate Blanchette as Janine.
The whole trilogy is fantastic. I have probably seen hot fuzz over 20 times and I never get tired of this one. Pure masterpiece. Everything from the humor to the jump cuts 👌
This film is a perfect homage to 80's & 90's action films. Superbly written and acted. The main characters are perfectly cast and the supporting actors are spot on too. One of my favourites.

Hot Fuzz has to be my favourite movie of all time. Everything is absolutely on point, you can tell that everyone just really enjoyed this project. Such a quotable film too!

This film is a masterpiece in not only tight editing, but storytelling, it plants false leads and small references, and then pays EVERYTHING off by the end including the false leads
