I was a probation officer in north London in the late 70s/early 80s. One of Madness’s crew appeared in our local magistrates’ court on some minor offence and the whole band turned up in court to offer him moral support.
Madness were a group who never took themselves too seriously but made some fantastic songs in their time. They are firmly entrenched lovingly in the heart of UK music history.
Well underrated band, there terrifick
Are a group, they’re touring.
Madness are amazing.. still touring
@@jasonsuter13 Surely not underrated ,huge .
@@SvenTviking still touring, live dates around the UK in bigger venues this autumn ( with Squeeze) The Ladykillers tour .
100% British eccentric madness 👌 ONE step beyond
Yeh they need to listen to that, brilliant
Imagine fans at a gig having the same fun, energy and enthusiasm: 'When Madness performed at 'Madstock' in Finsbury Park, London, in 1992, the 33,000 dancing fans created a tremor that registered 4.2 on the Richter scale and local residents feared they were experiencing an earthquake.' - Nostalgia Central
In fact, they were experiencing a skaquake.
@@0okamino that pun was skandalous
@@rudeboyjohn3483 I see what you did there!
I was there! It was feckin' awesome. In fact my boyfriend and I had backstage passes, because we were friends with Woody, the drummer. WHAT a day.
They still elisit the same response.
When a new Madness single came out we all couldn't wait to see the accompanying video. They always made fun videos
The Specials Too Much Too Young and Ghost Town are lyrically wonderful
Two-tone is as important to British music as Britpop. The Specials, Madness, Selecter, the Beat, Bad Manners. You'll find lots to like.
I was about to say that but you did so fair play to you.
I loved the Selector
Still do listen to all my SKA records 7"s
Well they influenced a lot of britpop acts blur and menswear in particular. Madness and the selecter also had a big influence on no doubt.
Buster blood vessel
It's funny, I was just thinking that if you added Ennio Moricone to this track you get The Coral.
As a kid madness was on the radio all the time. But “our house” is a great song and so is “baggy trousers”. Try them for a reaction or do a double madness video.
Definitely these two but also One Step Beyond.
@@darthvadersnanps5 well get the suck to do a triple madness session
My god, had forgotten about this little gem. Loved Madness back in the day (80s).
Madness officially split in 1986. ... When Madness performed again at 'Madstock' in Finsbury Park, London, in 1992, the 33,000 dancing fans created a tremor that registered 4.2 on the Richter scale and local residents feared they were experiencing an earthquake.
Still touring after 40+ years. You need to watch their live videos, their known as the nutty boys for a reason. Embarrassment or land of hope and glory are great tunes. This song is usually the last they perform and all their kids often join them on stage. Epic band.
Embarrassment is another great song of theirs with lyrics telling the true story of when Lee the saxophone player's sister became pregnant with a black man's child and the reaction of the family to the news. Their attitude wasn't great, but that changed once the baby was born
I always loved their darker stuff, like Embarrassment, but also Cardiac Arrest and Grey Day.
I am a 71 Yr old gran, and still love a bit of ska.
Put this on at any wedding reception and watch everyone go nuts! Great stuff 😊
Totally agree i did play it at a wedding reception the groom best man and rest of the rugby team all in tuxes all dancing together copying this video……crowd watching on hysterically laughing, best fun in ages.
One Step Beyond was how it started for Madness and I'd suggest you go for that next before moving on to Our House, Embarrassment or Baggy Trousers. Way to go!
At the queens golden jubilee they sang “our house “ on the roof of Buckingham palace
One's house!
There's a strong theme in British pop of silliness, it crops up all over the place like Queen's video of I want to break free. For a different type of music try the Pogues playing Dirty Old Town. A song about a Northern town in England written by a Scot and played by a band from London that's Anglo Irish.
Absolutely love The Pogues, went to see them twice first time was magical , listened to the last song Fairy tale of New York and as we came out of the venue it was snowing in Birmingham, U.K. The second time was terrible, The band were over an hour late, Shaun McGowan came out as pissed as hell and could hardly sing so we left early but I still love them!❤️ A pair of brown eyes, A rainy night in soho, Irish rover, Dirty old town ….. x
@peterblythe1 lucky you, love The Clash!x
@peterblythe1 Joe Strummer ended up down here in Somerset, must have been an amazing time to be in London!
They weren't called The Nutty Boys for nothing! This was the only music the boys would dance to back in the day, when it wasn't cool for boys to dance! Well, I say dance......
Remember that well - school disco’s!🤦♀️😂
@@sharonkay8638 We're giving our age away!! 🤫😉
You've gotta listen to Baggy Trousers, a fast and fun Madness song!
There's a great Madness Ordinary Boys manship, It's called Ordinary trousers, check it out
House of fun is also a madness classic too
Oh I'm so glad you guys went back to Madness, you need the videos to truly get them. They were such a big part of growing up in the 80s in the UK, relentlessly good, Ska masters! (and Gwen Stefani was a massive fan growing up in the US too, odd fact).
The ultimate party band, a few beers down your neck and then get down to some two tone Dad dancing.
I'd forgotten they'd raided the It Ain't Half Hot Mum wardrobe department! :-D
Madness are a national treasure here in the UK. 🇬🇧
Gotta listen to Ian dury and the blockheads. Hit me with your rhythm stick. British 🔥
Yes!! The bass is FIRE!!!
Quite right. Ian Dury was one of a kind.
Always watch the video when checking out Madness.
Madness are definitely one of the most British bands ever. Try more from them, more from The Jam, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass and present day-slowthai or Sleaford Mods
Oh man - yes, all of these!
Which track do you think would be the best intro to Sleaford Mods?
@@danic9304 All great examples of Britain in different times, ay?!
@@danic9304 And not sure....'Tied up in Nottz'?
@@rybena4422 as good a place as any...
One of my favourite Madness Songs.
bed and breakfast man, shut up, grey day, madness there are just so many great madness tunes!
Madness were known as the Nutty Boys an entry for someone young into the two tone scene. I was 8 years old at the time of the Mod\2Tone\Ska revival. Ska was the precursor to Reggae by the way :-) At that time we also had post punk Mod Revival bands like the Jam who aimed to sound like early Who and The Kinks and The Small faces. Britain at that time was going through a phase of youth rebellion again like the 60s.
Madness were / are an institution. Born out of the same ska / Two Tone movement around 1979 as the Specials and The Selecter, they became their own thing and made millions of people happy with mostly jaunty and fun ska based music.
There's a lovely free exhibition on in Coventry about Two Tone and the bands and fans who made a whole scene in the late 70's early 80's.
Selecter still gig and are a great night out for dancing, Madness have recorded new material and tend to play big crowd gigs /festivals whilst The Specials now only consist of the members who at one point left to be the Fun Boy Three, they've had a recent album out, not sure if they are touring. Saw the Specials a few years back at, I think, Cheltenham Racecourse when there was more of the original band still around with a bunch of geezers the same age or so as me and they were great!
Put a smile on my face, I was a big madness fan as a young kid.
Madness just make me feel good. They are part of the furniture in the UK. They’ve written some of the best pop tunes of my lifetime. Great musicians and great fun. Can’t imagine life without them!
Had the best of times dancing to Madness. The song would come on and everyone wld dive onto the dance floor and mimic madness moves on the vid. So much energy and fun...
One Step Beyond is my favourite Madness song.
Can`t help but smile at madness. Can I suggest "Jollity Farm" by the Bonzo Dog Band?
🤣🤣 they will think we're even more crazy than they already do 🤣🤣
1979 - thanks guys, you took me back to being a spotty 12 years old. Now 54 yrs old and Madness are still the bollocks.
Check out 'Grey Day' and 'The return of the Los Palmas 7'
Ska at its best, top band. I remember buying this when it came out.
I've seen this group live numerous times and they are awesome. This tune always sends the crowd insane. Beer flying everywhere
Many people in the 🇬🇧 have followed Madness for over forty years and there still putting out concerts, I still rock like you two when Madness comes on.
I worked with Suggs (lead singer) about 3 years ago, some of his stories were so funny. Down to earth nice guy
Our house by madness is a belter gents but then all their tunes are ace. 👍👍
Still a great tune-42 years after it was released!
Madness are a very important part of the history of British Pop Music
Love this song. Love how it speads up, one of my favorite groups.. Went to Scotland on a LDS mission in Feb 1979 and went from KISS, Van Halen Art Garfunkle to this the Specials, Sad Cafe, Roxy Music, Dead Kennedys etc. LOVED them all. But especially Madness and Level 42
The Prince is their tribute to Prince Buster, one of the original ska singers. Check out the original Jamaican ska, Toots and the Maytals, Harry J, and if you really want to explore, Dennis Alcapone did a fantastic track a few years ago with Nereus Joseph, No Peace. Its truly epic.
Madness songs always great fun and you can tell they all were mates. Listen to embarrassment, its actual really sad when you learn it was written by the sax player about how his sister was shunned by her family for having a baby with a man of a different colour.
How about Up the Junction by Squeeze or Happy Hour by The Housemartins.
Early madness were in with two tone . A blend of pop and reggae. The specials. The beat. Selector. Totally game changing groups.
That Saxaphone in Madness songs always blew me away!! Yes, I was there in the 80's with Madness, The Specials, The Beat et al!!!
Love Madness, this is a crackin' tune, how about the Specials with Too much too young or Gangsters next.
I couldn’t help but smile my mum constantly played ska and I do the same to my son it’s just good music
You guys are bringing back my childhood. Good work fellas!
You could turn a dead crowd in a pub into the start of great night with a little bit of Madness.
Lucky to have seen them twice you smile ear to ear the whole time
I've been to see these a few times and I swear to God when they play this song the whole crowd is bouncing 😅 they are fantastic live 👍
They were truly one step beyond of their time.
Love them as much now as I did when I was young in '79
Here we go!!!
Doesn't matter if you were a punk, goth, or metalhead, everybody loves Madness in the UK.
Definitely check out more Madness. Baggy Trousers, Embarrassment, Cardiac Arrest to name but a few.
Seen them live, absolutely brilliant night out. People of all ages bouncing all over the place.
THANK YOU! I had totally forgotten this song. So awesome to hear it again. Remember how bloody popular it was. Bloody love Madness!!! (goes to play it again)
Oh boy, these last two vids I've watched really taking me back. Bad Manners and Madness. Fantastic.
It's all started with the The Prince then there was Baggy Trousers,Grey Day,Shut Up,One Step Beyond,Tomorrow just another day, sweetest Girl,Driving in my car,Uncle Sam.......so many great songs and 98%will put a smile on your face.
Madness live at Reading, England. The crowd brings the energy. This band is a party.
You guys really need to react to Madness’s version of “Swan Lake” 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
When this was released and it first came on Top Of The Pops , I thought it was ridiculous, but not until recently that my band decided to cover this did I realize that it was pure brilliance and these guys are very talented musicians having a blast and getting paid for it.
Incidentally, we are a three piece - guitar bass & drums and this number goes down a storm at the end of a Madness medley - House of Fun - Baggy Trousers and Night Boat. Notice at the start of the video how the sax appears to blow the palm leaves - that's pure Madness for you!
"The Beat" were a group in the same vein at the same time. Not with the comedy element so much, but perhaps more in tune with the original Jamaican SKA, well worth checking out chaps!
It must be love. Slightly mellow Madness but one of their best songs.
Need to do one of "Bad Manners" with Buster Bloodvessel, brilliant, you will love it 👍🏻
And they are still doing concerts! I saw them playing only 3 weeks ago 😁
Got into Madness pretty late around 1985 and have loved them since. Good to see they're still performing live gigs.
You put this on at a party and your guaranteed a full dance floor
This was the band that got blokes up to dance even if they couldnt
I was born in 78... MADNESS are exactly that .. I have fond memories of madness songs , back in the day some kids would line up and do the madness walk lol ... please listen to more.. one step beyond , the Prince, our house , baggy trousers, My girl .
Everybody loved Madness, from little kids to grannies. They're a British institution - and still touring.
After the horror of disco music SKA got guys back on the dancefloor Madness, The Specials all the 2 tone bands were great and you can dance to it great year for me 1979 just left high school and i had never heard any ska music but these bands turned me on to 60s SKA ,Prince buster etc...
I have been a fan of Madness for over 40 years - since they first came onto the music scene! Their live shows were just like a big party 😃
Madness videos are brilliant - usually done "on the cheap" the cameras often just kept rolling to get fun shots of them ..... "Our House" is great, "Shut Up" (the video) is very funny and "Baggy Trousers" & "One Step Beyond" are classics .... 😃
When Madness comes on in a club the dance floor just fills up with blokes dancing like this in the UK
If you have tradesmen working on your property, painting, plastering, laying bricks...etc, put Madness on the stereo. The work will be completed in half the time.
It's simply not possible to not work at double-time to that 2-tone Ska beat.
Our House is their biggest hit, pretty much an anthem, along with It Must Be Love.
Great Reaction 👍🏻 Night Boat to Cairo - Excellent, Clever Fun
Though they apparently never took themselves seriously? They absolutely worked at that time,we had the Specials who were rebels with a cause.lol.UB40 were amazing, we had the Beat etc.so we needed Madness to just have some fucking fun in Thatchers glory years were daydreaming was more common than work.
For me this is my childhood, growing up in the 80’s, from 5-12yrs old with 2 older brothers blasting out Madness, UB40, Rock Lobster by the B-52’s, U2’s Boy, lots of Scar music and lots of reggae, plumes of gange, skinheads, punk, civil unrest, Thatcher, heat waves. To see people watch it in 2021 seems like you guys missed out.
Yes. Absolute banger. Love it.
Saw them at Ally Pally a few years back, they sounded just as good as they did back in their heyday. It was a great gig.
Look at "Baggy Trousers" - excellent song, excellent video!!!!
Released: 1979 - enjoy the Albums guys, real fun time!
Finally got to see them live at Isle of Wight festival, 2019.
Anything really, they’re all good, but Wings of a Dove is a belter.
Thank you for discovering Ska!!! The Beat, Selector. The Specials, Bad Manners and, of course, Madness. This was my generation. This was my generations music. This was my generation's style. ( My Porkpie hat still fits ! ).
One of my favourites of Madness.
Much loved band in the UK that wrote some Great songs
Welcome to the house of fun. My girl's mad at me. Baggy trousers.
Yep, don't forget "baggy trousers", another great one!
Used to do all the madness dances as loopy as they were lol .
Night Boat, is actually Cockney rhyming slang for unemployment benefit (the Dole). Night boat to Cairo - Giro. As in the Giro cheque you picked up on Thursdays from your local Post Office.
It definatly dates it in the 80,s!!....or the 70,s. Classic.😂
Marvellous tunes.
If you listen to the music, you're invited to the party.
Ain't seen that video for a long time.
Thanks
This is why they were lovingly known as "The Nutty Boys", it didn't matter if the song was like this or whether it reflected society in the 80's they attacked the music with so much fun and energy. It must be love, wings of a dove, my girl, embarrassment, Grey Day, all classics from the lads.
