This is a very early performance in The Old Grey Whistle Test, a programme in the 80's. I am going to see them at Edinburgh Castle in July. They are still fantastic. The sax player still kills it every time!! All in their 60's now.
.. One of my very fave bands, and like you Sue, it's their early stuff I love the most .. Their debut album "One Step Beyond" is an absolute classic, full of infectiously great songs such as this .. My Top 3 Madness songs all come from it .. They are "Bed And Breakfast Man", "My Girl", and their cover of ska legend Prince Buster's "Madness" ( which is where they got their name ).
Hey Wayne, yes, they are a ton of fun! I had no idea that is where they got their name...that is a cool fun fact. This type of ska music is one if my faviurite genres...so upbeat and full of energy...always makes me happy and makes me want to dance 🥰💜
I love Madness, so many great songs. They are an institution in the UK. Embarrassment is probably my favourite song of theirs. Also worth checking out is Bed and Breakfast Man from this same tv show performance.
Ahhh Ska, such a fun genre. Highly recommend a reaction to Australia's greatest current ska band, The 'Melbourne Ska Orchestra'. Big band that mixes ska, reggae, world music and more. songs. Some of their best are 'Get Smart Theme, ' Lygon Street Meltdown, 'The Best Things In Life Are Free', Third Time Lucky & 'Sly Boots is fun too. Thanks Sue.
Hi Sue, Yes I have seen Madness live! They are very entertaining & give real value for money. They enjoy themselves so much on stage. This is obviously from the Old Grey Whistle Test, which always insisted that bands played live - no lip synch here.
Wow, I would love to see these guys, Dave. They must put on a great show...so much energy. I love OGWT...such an incredible show with so many great artists 🤩💚
Yes that was a live performance. The Old Grey Whistle Test was a late night music programme on the BBC that covered some off the less maintsream bands or bands before they were well known. I remember hearing Meat loaf with Bat Out of Hell and Paradise by thedashboard light for the first time in the UK around 1979/78 on the same programme. And the Skkk Skkk sound is what some pople say is where the name Ska came from.
Madness are great ....... huge band in the UK and from my district of London (Camden). A ska track I now listen to every day is Perfidia by Phyllis Dillon...... 60s Jamaican version of an old Mexican song !
Ansolutly love Madness They have a greatest hits album that is just chock a block with loads of great songs and memories House of Fun , Baggy Trousers , My Girl , it Must be love , One Step Beyond , Our House and Michael Caine The last song has great sample of the actor saying “ My name is Michael Caine By all accounts they were a great live band but I never got to seem them That Changes May 30th as I already have my ticket ( cant wait )
The studio version and a lot of other live versions have the guitar more prominent in the opening section of the song. There was a Metal version of Night Boat recorded a few years ago by a band called Imperial Vengeance, it’s a bit slower than the Madness version. If you want to hear a Madness reggae song, Day On The Town is a good song, and as for ska recommendations, Bad Manners have been around for about as long as Madness, Bad Manners released a version of the Can Can that was a hit, a few others of theirs you might be interested in are Special Brew, NeNeNaNaNaNaNuNu (that’s a real song title in case you think I’m joking) and Inner London Violence
Yep, that's a great one to see.👍.. A must for any Madness fan ! .. The parts about how the band got together are very interesting and entertaining .. And who would have thought that such a brilliant sax player as Lee "Kix" Thompson would have needed to have the riot act read to him to make him get his act together and improve his playing ?
@wayne_twentyfive Wow I would not have ever guessed that. Lee is unbelievable. It is hard to believe that he would have needed any motivation, let alone a serious tongue lashing...good thing it happened though. He is fantastic 😎❤️
First time hearing this group. Like the sax, but not a fan of the lead singer's voice. The ska vibe here, though, made me wanna dance with my cat, which I did. The cat gave me a disgusted look that said "What I put up with!" Lol!
😂😂😂 I love that you dance with your cat too, J. I do it all the time. They may look unimpressed but I think they secretly like it as we know cats only do what they want 🐈💚🎵🤗
I prefer these early Madness songs - later on I think they "over-Cockneyed". Luckily, we still get Ska acts touring the smaller venues in my area, generally doing a selection of Jamaican and UK Ska tunes.
My absolute favourite single of all time.
Really, that is awesome. Glad I played your favourite, Spike. BTW, I love your name...Spike..very cool 🤩💜
Heh - cheers; my Dad was a big fan of The Goons and Spike Milligan in particular.
@SpikeMatthews I don't know who Spike Milligan is but it is still cool 😁🧡
He was an absurdist comedian and actor and poet.
This is called "taste" ladies and gentlemen. You can't fake it :D
Thanks Ingens 😀💚

Excellent, Thanks Mrparksies. I will check them out 🤗
Lead singer is Suggs, Lee Thompson on Sax, Mike Carson on Piano, Mark Bedford, Bedders, Chris Foreman on guitar and Dan Woody Woodgate in drums.
Awesome, thanks for that, Pauline 🤩

Hey Kevin, thanks for that. Interesting, I wonder if the skkk sound did help name ska...that is cool if it did 😀💜

Very cool. They should have been bigger in North America...this was fun. Thanks Mark 🤗

Does Jimmy Barnes video has comments turned off ?
You won't be disappointed, they are still fantastic. I've seen them 9 times now, last one in December of last year then seeing them again in July.
Not The Nine O'clock News had a laugh at Ska live performances in their "I Like Bouncing" skit :)

@chefren77 Thanks Chefren I will give it a look 🤩
@chefren77 Haha Mr Bean does ska...fun 🤣🤣🤣🖤🤍
THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST, WAS A MORE GROWN UP VERSION OF TOP OF THE POPS, THEY WOULD HAVE A MORE RELAXED ATTITUDE AND PLAYED ALBUM TRACKS AS WELL
Great show! And this was a cool band to have on...fantastic song. Thanks Michael 🤗

LEA THOMPSON BRILLIANT AND MAD ON THE SAXOPHONE.
What? Lea Thompson out of 'Back To The Future' was in Madness?? Wow! I never knew that! 😁
YOU ALSO NEED T.O WATCH THE SONG BAGGY TROUSERS (WITH THE VIDEO) A BOUT SCHOOL LIFE.

I love that you can still see some good ska band, Escapee. It is such a great genre 😀
A fun ska band but seriously good musicians.
What's not to like ?
Exactly, Kim 😀💙
Hi Sue I think you accidentally turned off the comments on the Jimmy Barnes video 😊❤
Oh no! Ok I will fix it. Thanks Dr Kap 😯
Should be on now 😊
Sue... Why are the comments shut off on the "Stand By Me" reaction for Jimmy Barnes? Is this a mistake?
Yes a mistake...not sure why they are off. It usually defaults to on
Should be on now 🤗
