The lead singer is playing the role of a young man nervously trying to buy condoms for the first time, and winds up using various euphemisms ("Box of balloons, with a featherlight touch") out of embarrassment. For another song about birth control from the same era, try 'Too much, too Young (live)' by The Specials.
Madness's songs are always fun!
A fun SKA band back from the 80's.
Much much more than that
Madness was MUCH better than people give them credit for!! 😎
The MASTERS of Two-Tone Ska!! The Specials hit first, but Madness perfected that shit! 💯
Welcome to the genre of ska! Madness was/is such a fun group with some silly music videos that I still remember from my childhood. I think it was my first introduction to British humor along the lines of Monty Python.
I've seen them 3 times, brilliant band.
Sweet! Takes me back to goofing around with my buddies back in high school. Madness broke through in America with "Our House" in 1983. When you're ready for more from them, check out "One Step Beyond", "Night Boat To Cairo", and "Wings of a Dove" among their many tunes.
Night bost to cairo is a must!
Madness videos were always entertaining
They're massively underrated as songwriters and musicians.
And they tackle difficult subjects too, check out Grey Day, Embarrassment, Uncle Sam, and Cardiac Arrest.
Madness were great and were the biggest selling band in the UK in the eighties.
this song is a classic for many many reason
Would love to see your reaction to Busta Bloodvessel of Bad Manners singing Lip Up Fatty.
Ska is renowned in 80s British music.
OFF TOPIC HERE JAYY!! I just wanted to wish you and your family a happy and blessed thanksgiving!!!
They're called Madness for a reason!
As others have said, its about reaching the age of 16 and trying to have fun!
The chemist bit still makes me laugh where he's trying to buy condoms and some old lady (Madness in drag) comes in to the shop.
Madness are a national institution
(Rubber Johnnies).
They're still going now.
It's partly about a lad going into a shop to buy condoms.
Rubber Johnnies...as we used to call them.
fun stuff indeed
Excellent choice. Need to hear more from band and bands like The Specials. Anyone remember "The Young Ones" ?
Was that at 15 Credibility Street🤔
i grew up with madness they were pretty huge back in the late 70's early 80's i was a huge fan !! some awsome songs to react to. one step beyond, it must be love, uncle sam soo many.
Still an absolutely fantastic band 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I first caught wind of Madness on a Friday night in 80 /81 on MTV .
Their seminal hit One Step Beyond really grabbed me and never let go.
Madness is great band 👍🏼
Rachel is a great judge!
"Miss Clay on all corners" that took a few plays before I got it😂
But yep, guy trying to say condoms without saying "condoms" since he's got a date and hopes he's getting lucky.
🎉 fun 🎉🤘😎💪💪💪
Good song good reaction
That was a fun song & video☺️ I never heard that one!
You must've been living on the moon for the last 40 years.
Yes playing golf SA.....or maybe I'm just not elderly like you🎉
Madness are brilliant live - and their videos were always great entertainment. Check out the video for one of their less well-known songs "Shut Up!" .... it's very funny 😆
Thats why they are called madness. Because they are all about madness
its his sixteenth birthday and in the chemist trying to buy contraceptives
Catchy, ain't it? I first saw Madness on the 80s Britcom 'The Young Ones,' and insane little show about four loser weirdo college kids who shared a house. When they started out, they found that BBC would give them more development money to variety programs than they would for comedy show. So every episode, they brought on a musical guest so they could be classified as a variety show.
Hey my love ♥️ try SWEET SOUL SISTER by THE CULT 👍
Love me some ska!
Turn up the music please. J with 2 whys ROCKS.
Song it’s about buying condoms!
Sixteen is the age of consent in the UK. It explains the song. Lol!
And Australia.
Their fans used to go off their heads back in the day and destroyed theatres. Slashed seats, broken furniture - you name it. The band itself was banned from many venues because the owners were too frightened to have them play.
Nonsense. 100% BS. There were social problems in the late 70s/80s. Are you going to blame football hooliganism on Madness d!ckhead
A hard time buying condoms...
Only Britain could produce a song about straight kids reaching the age of consent and buying condoms…without a single reference to the opposite sex.
Why mention "straight"? 99.9 of the population when this came out would have classed themselves as "straight".
Miss Clay?
