I was there when they filmed the start of the video. I lived in those flats as did Lee the saxophone player in madness. I grew up with them and went on tour with them a lot. Best time was America 83 opened up for the police and David bowie on big stadium shows. Still see them a lot lately in London , great guys

Fun fact: The Young Ones didn't have much of a budget to produce, but, if they featured bands playing it meant it could be classed a 'variety show' and the BBC allowed a bigger budget for variety shows. Yeeess! said Young Ones production. We've struck a blow against the BBC fascist bully boys to get more cash out of them and book the bands WE like.

Yeah, BBC Bristol had no room for a comedy show, but did for a variety show......
In the UK Madness had 31 Top 40 hit singles 17 of which which the top 10. Incidentally the funfair are featured in the video is in a seaside town in Britain called Great Yarmouth the funfair was the Pleasure Beach which is just down the road from where I live.

Madness have the best videos. 'Shut up' is another good one, the one where they walk across the ceiling.
Good reaction. You picked up on the message of the video very quickly. You have a keen ear. "Michael Caine" and "It must be love" by Madness are great songs.

This was their only number one record in the UK although as somebody has already said they had lots of top ten hits. Got to number one in 1982,
They were definitely channeling Monty Python on this video. That could have been Michael Palin, Terry Jones, and Eric Idle dressed as women doing the cheesy dancing!
In the UK , a while back, if you went to the barbers for a haircut,often they would round it off with the question, "Something for the week-end sir?" , ie condoms :)
Barber shops are the the best hahaha. There was a few I used to go to that sold everything beside getting a cut. Hats,shirts etc was really convenient and one of the best places to talk sports among other topics hahah
The music on the young ones was because when trying to make the series for the BBC they were told the was no money in the budget for another comedy series however there was money in the 'light entertainment' budget so by putting a music interval in the show they could call it light entertainment rather than comedy and therefore get the series made. Crazy accountants.

The barber in the vid is anastasi.. He had a barbers on the corner of greenham Road on Colney hatch lane, Muswell Hill in London.. Always got my haircut there when I was younger and when I had some hair 😉

For the unsure, this is taken very seriously, Night Boat to Cairo is a Ska Classic, a London light of Cosmopolitan, Multi Cultural, Cross Ethnic, boundary breaking fun. Naturally the music needs to be good to achieve such lofty goals - and it is one step beyond good.
One of the most influential bands of my life, which is scary when one realises both how old I am and what stuff I am in change of.

As teenagers most of us have been there. You go to buy condoms and either the young girl behind the counter is someone you know and quite fancy and are too scared to ask out or the woman behind the counter knows you and is a friend of your mum.
