Tip for learning: When starting to tank or at the start of the new season, at the end of the dungeon, bring up the damage taken tab in Details and go through the top 10 sources of incoming damage and make sure that you understand where that damage came from, if you needed to take it and make a mental note about it for the future. It takes about 4-5 minutes and you’ll learn a lot over time about then to use your bigger mitigation CDs, stuns or where it may be more effective to just kite when your CDs runs out.

here are few advices from long time tank regarding anxiety in m+
    1. if you wipe or something dumb happens just have this lil macro prepared "get up and lets go again, stop wasting time", i dont talk during the key, standing around trying to reason with whiners is a waste of everyone's time
    2. always be pulling, dont stop for a moment unless you really really need to (like waiting for dead to come to boss arena that would close or healer is dangerously low on mp before big pull)
    3. you are not the only one in a group to deal with trash mechanics, others also have stuns, interrupts, slows, silences, defensives etc, its always those who dont use any of those that whine the most when pull goes south
    4. low lvl m+ are most toxic, dont get discouraged, it gets better after +18, thats also when dps mistakes start one shotting them
    5. tanks can survive almost anything, your party might not, play it safe, dont copy-paste mdi strats or attempt risky strats with pugs you never played with
and the final most important thing
tanks and dps are not that much different, just play a tank like you would play a dps but this time you can pull whatever you want, the only extra thing is using your defensives

  • @Yattayatta

Great video, seasoned m+ tank here, and one of the biggest things you touched upon here is actually great for timing keys, talk BEFORE the key, not during.
Lets say you are in an Algethar's Academy
Tell everyone beforehand what you want to do, link your route, explain that on Vexamus you will let one orb in after the second arcane cast, so they are ready for that damage, talk to them about crawth, if you want to do 5 3, the healer and DPS needs to know so they can adjust their CD usage (or tell you if they can't survive)
Assign key kicks, rogue, you kick and stun the arcane staves in every pack there is one please, mage, I need you to range interrupt invokers before the last boss.
This will save so many keys, because you are all on the same page.

Yes i think it's so helpfull. just little things help. tell people walk clockwise ariund the tree boss. i tell the heal that i'll pull crawth downstairs in windphase. so he isn't suprised if i'm out of sight.
But yes @clarity251 has right too. under 20 it's most time useless to explain anything. But for me i know then that i tried my best to explain

Much needed video for me. Tanking is so heavy, literally anything and it's my fault as a tank. Yeah, I should have to worry about every interrupt and i should have done more even though I had the most interrupts, stuns and good damage, but it's so easy to point at me. It's so annoying. Thank you Quazii.

I started tanking for the first time this season. Initially I LOVED it so much, but that was when I was overpowered and out levelled the content. Doings 2s and 4s and 6s at 390ilvl was dream work. Once we progressed higher and higher and the gear progression slowed down and content wasn't being outgeared, it took a toll on my confidence. Now I struggle to get through a run with no anxiety and always questioning myself and taking every problem a dungeon has as my own fault.
These videos are great because it shows that it's not just a me problem and alot of others go through the same thing. Appreciate the hard work you do, Mate.

100% agree with what you say here - as a tank main who pugs basically everything from heroic raid to +20 keys, it's important to have a thick skin, and doubly important to communicate well with people.
One thing I have started doing is marking my groups 'discord encouraged', and I put together a separate (free) discord server to invite people to. I've learned so many tips and tricks by just talking to random people about their specs, strategizing live, etc. And, while I agree that there can be creatures that lurk in the depths of WoW, most of the people I chat with are pretty cool, especially if they're willing to jump in a server and talk to you.
Big takeaway - just have fun with it. It's a game.

I'm always open to two options; Either I know exactly what to do, or I haven't got the first clue. I'm up front about whichever I'm feeling in the moment, but I can flip that coin as soon as I need to in order to deal with my situation. If I don't know and no one else can lead? I'm going to guess as confidently as possible, and try my best. If I know exactly what would be best for our comp? I'm going to tell everyone what to do, spam flags and icons and expect I've got full support.
If neither of these work? I'm still going to try to keep aggro, and keep you fighting as long as possible- I won't stop until the key is done or bricked. because I'm the tank, that's my role.

This is such a great topic. Your original one on it in Shadowlands helped me learn (as well as the coaching videos you did on my terrible plaguefall runs!). I have been insulted just about every way possible (although I don't doubt the next one will be original) but eventually you get confident enough that I can chat with my guild about it and we all have a laugh. I have been told "Your prot pally tanking makes me sick to my stomach" "You had to have bought your gear" "BAD TANK BAD TANK BAD BAD BAD" and now when I make a mistake with a guildmate they'll bust out with one and it's an instant tension breaker. The only way you get better is by trying, failing, analyzing and then correcting the failure. That's why recording the runs is so important. Nvidia has a recorder bundled in with their tools (GeForce Experience). No idea how it compares to others but it's simple enough for me (control F9 toggles record on and off).

Most times for me, the most stressful part about tanking are packs that are closely placed together. One wrong move, or interrupt missed and now you have a very stressful ninja pull. This is almost always blamed on the tank. Sometimes you just don’t have space to maneuver them away from a pat or a pack that is right next to you. It would be nice to have some videos explaining mob mechanics which are at times more dangerous than most bosses.

the most stressful role is healer tbh. you rarely hear people complain about the tank. omg, if you let a dps die a couple of times, especially like lock or hunter, you just wait for them to say something ugly. I don't know why, but it's always those three classes.

I have been tanking since Cata, and I still get anxious while LFGing and playing the first few pulls. I have to tell myself within every Dungeon, during the first few pulls, to calm down, slow down, and then everything just falls into place as you discover the group's rythm. It usually takes at least the first Boss to discover and nail it down. Its tough, but yet very exciting when all goes well.

I've tanked during Legion but not so much since, very frustrating sometimes because as a tank you have a "big picture" perspective.
You see all the mistakes people do and there's nothing you can do but to bait them with the mobs, this alone doesn't always work and people don't get it why you are moving "for no reason".

Ever since I started maining a tank, I've found that my interactions in game have turned more pleasant. People constantly try to add me in-game, or tell me they really liked *this or that* from my tanking, even if it was a depelete.
While starting to learn tanking is very daunting, if you actively try to get better, people WILL notice you and want to play with you more.
This kind of thing also happened while dps'ing in high keys, but it is way more common as a tank (and probably a healer too).

Great vid man! The only thing I’d add is to try and be the voice of reason in your group. If someone makes a mistake and they’re getting put on blast you gotta reel that back in quick before the groups morale breaks. You can easily still time a key with a wipe but if someone leaves because they keep getting flamed it’s a wrap. Anyone in the group can do this of course but I think it’s a good mental to have as a tank especially.

I'm sure you get this plenty, but I've never wanted to actually support a WoW content creator as hard as I do after watching this video. I'm terrified of tanking in M+. I've only every really done DPS in WoW, I tried tanking in FF out of just sheer curiosity and I loved it, I tried it in other games and loved it there too. I personally find no higher calling than ensuring that my team is as protected as possible and I have an unhealthy desire to be efficient in my doings. I have only ever tried casual dungeons with tanking, with the exception of once or twice with friends back in BFA and that was always a low key. Tanking in WoW seems so much more terrifying than other MMOs. I'm not sure if that itself is logical in a broader spectrum, but I know who I've met in WoW. They can be the most callous and cold creatures I've met, a simple mistake seems to always be the icing on the cake, and personal responsibility is so hard for so many of them. I only want to become better at this, and to prove to myself that I can crush this, and this video is beyond amazing at calling out those fears and not just telling you to confront them, but also how to. It analyzes what fears a common player might face when approaching thanking, and how to see past them. You are a wonderful soul my friend, and you've given me courage. While you do not know me, I would like you to know that I too am stubborn at times. I've always thrived on my own instinct and personal courage. But today you have taught me in a way that I don't often think people capable of. Thank you, from the depths of my soul.

My 2 cents as a now main tank. Start doing all keys on lvl 2 no matter what level you are at. Then move to your lowest high for me it's like 15 keys since I only pug nowadays. As a tank i don't give 2 Shits about the rest of the group besides noticeing healer mana and lets say MDI lvl dps i try and pull around their CDs and the best advice is just do it dummy! Keep signing to keys and doing them no matter how bad you are you will ONLY get better with experience nothing else matters (pun intended) turning of chat is a essential part of playing tank in pugs below 14-15+ keys above 18 you will have more players on the same level (for some reason people seem to be better on higher keys 😱.

I think the addon is platter I believe not sure but I have a addon that shows defense cds and interrupts on cd of all party members I have 3 dps meters as a tank 1 for dps 1 for dmg taken and another for interrupts you can see whose not doing there job pretty easily also your job as a tank is to hold aggro move use defense cds if you’re think your gonna die and just keep moving if you have a interrupt use it but it’s not your fault after that a guild is the best thing for new tanks join a guild let them know you have doubts about tanking and they will help it’s a great thing to have a guild in this game

Healing is much worse tbh, you get blamed for literally all the fuckups if you wipe or if someone dies. If you want to heal, play a tank.

alot of this are true for healers aswell. they keep getting blamed for not keeping rest of group alive even if its clear that have more to do with lack of interupts. i never blacklist tanks for simply doing a mistake, but only when they really bad, or toxic.

I once had a healer die 3 times in a row from the whirlwind dudes in AA just before the endboss and he raged on the whole group for "not protecting him" (I was tanking). Helps to remind yourself that no one is a saint and that every role can mess up.

Taking in pugs is fine and relaxing from +2 to +8 then us stressful from +9 to +15 then is easy from +16. Reason being in low m+ if you miss an interrupt, going the wrong path is still fine no one will die. During m+ 9 to 15 is when mobs will kill you if you miss a interrupt and that's where DPS have to step up and most players don't know that or just blame the tank. After m15 most players that made it know the dungeon so is much easier.

I think most people feel anxiety tanking M+ because you're on the clock. It's not a game anymore, it's become a job. Gotta go Go GO! I already have a job. Not sure I want a second. Especially one I have to drag around a bunch of entitled whiners that blame me for the lack of dps.

After 5 years of tanking high m+ keys , all u need to know is these two
    A. Dont do ur own key unless uare mentally ready for it to deplete
B.if u see any toxicity from anyone in someone elses key, leave
no player has the slightest right to insult a tank

so what do you think about the annulet for tanks? think stacking a bunch of the defensive stones will be worth it? Just looking at it, assuming they buff it to the point where things are better than just using a 418/421 ring, a few standouts called to me. one, just the straight up fire damage proc, just for an extra source of procs for the eranog or broodkeeper ring. the frost shield, while it's a small shield, giving 6 seconds of effectively 15% mitigation from melee damage seems like it would be pretty good for mythic+, since its a known quantity, every 20 sec. 3rd i was thinking depending on the proc rate, either the shadow damage and self heal, or the lava shield that makes attackers take fire damage. for a prot warrior the lava shield one seems pretty good, since it procs off absorbs, and i'd imagine ignore pain counts. wowhead seems to think tanks just want Dps proc, another dps proc, and another dps proc. there's something to be said for that, but i dont know. the ring needs a lot of love to actually be good. if each gem was Proc + some random secondary stats then it would be okay. even if it only worked out to half the secondary stats of a normal ring of that ilvl, it'd be a lot less painful to use, but i just cant see myself losing 4% haste.

Hmm as of the moment I’m chilling on them - I think they are really good for fresh alts for easy ilvl, but I’ll have to try them for myself to be convinced they replace my mains existing rings (:

The exact reason I never tank PUG M+, toxic people. I only play with real life friends that are within social range (you talk alot of shit for someone within slap range). Another reason I don't like PUG M+'s, 1 wipe for whatever reason and boom - people leave, especially people from eastern Europa countries straight up leave group the second a wipe occures. edit: i report these people who leave the dungeon early after wiping, i dont know if it has any meaning and blizzard does something with it though.
