  • My favorite element on most roller coasters is the first drop. I love when a coaster features a large and/or intense plunge. In this video, I rank the top 50 drops I have experienced on the 1150 plus roller coasters I have ridden worldwide.

    Completely agreed on Iron Rattler at #1, what a genius move to restore the full height of the Rattler's drop while making it even wilder. Also shedding a tear for BBW's drop over the river, one of the coolest drops ever devised.

    Cannibal's drop gets me every freaking time. I've gotten easily into the hundreds on that one, and i still get a stomach dropping feeling of sacredness or just excitement every time. Plus, since it slows you down a little bit as you go from horizontal to beyond, you are absolutely hanging there. You are guaranteed to be out of your seat the whole drop, no matter where you sit.

    Love this list! Thanks so much for making it! The back seat on Rail Blazer is prime ejector airtime. Planning a trip to Fiesta Texas this spring with my son and we're so psyched for Iron Rattler! An honorable mention on my limited list would be Gold Striker's first drop.

    I'm less bothered about ejector airtime than most enthusiasts so my list is probably a little different, but one first drop I love and that I think is a little underrated is Black Mamba at Phantasialand. I didn't fall in love with the coaster on my first visit, but I had multiple rides in the back row on my second trip there. I mean, I've been on bigger drops, but the fact you're dropping into a trench and for longer than expected, you get the feeling that you're dropping forever. And the speed you build up to carry you into the first loop is crazy, you can feel the blood rush to your feet. For that unexpected depth and speed of the drop, it definitely cracks my top 20 - if you're sat in the back.

    Having ridden all kinds of modern coasters from Kärnan and Geforce to RMC´s (definitely too few of those!), my favorite first drop of any coaster still remains the one on the transportable Schwarzkopf coaster "Thriller", which roamed around european fairs in the 1980´s and 90´s.
    It was just insane. The slender pre-drop section (the 125 feet felt like170 feet) combined with that twisting almost vertical drop is something no other coaster has come close to. For a fraction of a second, you hovered vertically in mid-air. Experiencing that in the last train was just awesome.
    I wish they would resurrect that drop (alongside the pre-drop section and maybe that first circular loop) on some future ride.

    Six flags discovery kingdom is my home park, glad to see joker on this list! Not enough people give it credit, still better than having no rmc, especially in a park with otherwise too intense coasters for most people. Also Maverick’s drop (and surely the stengel dive) in the back row killed my shoulders after more or less marathoning it for 6 rides in a little under two hours. I’ve ridden 91 coasters currently so I don’t have enough for a top 50 to make it a fair contest so to speak but both of these would be on there for me as well

    Rode Iron Rattler a few weeks ago. It's a beautiful and memorable setting. I rode the front 2x and that was fun with the views, but the rear seat was twice as good. Instead of stalling you at the top like the front does, the rear seat unexpectedly just hurls you over the drop. It was awesome, I rode it 3x like that, a total blast.

    Some of my favourite first drop are Hyperion, EGF/Kondaa, OzIris/Monster (Gröna Lund) and Wodan !
    Small correction the 1.5 m limit for the back row on Alpina Blitz isn't due to the airtime but because the 2 seats at the back are made for large riders, so since the seats are "deeper" there will be too much room between the seat and the lap bar to allow a smaller rider :)

    Great choices! My list is very similar +/- a ride and ranking here and there. Did you ever ride the original Riverside Cyclone prior to 2002? The first drop/banked turn/drop sequence was an elite moment. Even if you don't consider the opening act a single element, the other large drops offered sharp and abrupt ejector airtime in the back rows.
    In 1999, Intamin opened their first Mega Coaster @ SFDL. The first (and several other) drops on S:RoS felt shocking at the time since the abrupt, glass-smooth and sustained ejector airtime outshined the ride's peers (Magnum, Morgans, Apollo/RB). The same comment applies to the SFA ride and superior SFNE model. The OG Intamin Mega Coasters deserve recognition.
    Skull Mountain. Back row, friendly restraints. You know what I mean.
    Windstorm Coasters. Isn't the insane drop the ride's largest? If not for this list, then definitely a contender for "Best drop under 50'.
    Hypersonic XLC- That ride...was something noteworthy. I have not ridden the Japanese peer.
    OG Togo Ultra Twister- feels like the car is being yanked down the drop, likely because the restraints feel like they are filled with concrete. Imagine a bowling ball being dropped down an over-waxed vertical drop-capsule slide.
    Fahrenheit- Better than or equal to Maverick and all the Gerstlauer Euro Fighters/Infinity Coasters.
    Shellraiser & Takabisha are noticeably better than the average Gerstlauer beyond-vertical drop coaster. While a half-point below, the two large drops on Mystery Mine are still wild and better than most.
    I love the Arrow Launch Loop coasters. Both drops seem ridiculous since the yank on the drops in both directions (back car better for the forward drop and front car better for the backward drop) is unexpected and really fun. I similarly rank the back car of Arrow looping coasters with straight drops such as Lochness Monster, Viper, Vortex (RIP), Dragon Fire, even the Loop/Corkscrews.
    Thank you for the fun discussion and excellent content!

  • @maxhagenauer24
    @maxhagenauer24 2 года назад

    I absolutely agree the first drop is the absolutely best part on 90% of coasters. Sometimes, I rode coasters just for the first cause it's so good like Raging Bull for example. It is what truly makes the coaster, the element where it gets its max speed that is used for the rest of the layout. Some of the best first drops I experienced are Goliath at Great America, Millennium Force, and Raging Bull. The thing is all drops on rides are usually their best part but different. Some drops are just normal medium sized drops like on an arrow corkscrew. Some are drops that last so long, you think it will never end like on Gigas. Some have a very quick but stupidly insane pop of ejector airtime like Raging Bull in the back. And some are sustained floater or ejector the entire way down like RMCs or B&M Hypers. This may sound unpopular but I much prefer a lift hill and drop over a launch.

    Some good ones not covered here:
    - Superman: The Ride at SFNE. Good powerful hyper drop into a tunnel.
    - Loch Ness Monster at BGW. This was much more impressive 35 years ago than it probably seems now. But I love the visuals of dropping into the river valley.
    - Drachen Fire at BGW. This was an infamously flawed coaster, but putting a corkscrew inversion high up in the first drop was insane brilliance, to the extent that Steel Curtain pays intentional homage to it (albeit with a different inversion).
    - Mr. Twister at Elitch Gardens (original). Elsewhere I mentioned the first curving mini-drop that sent you screaming around a high turnaround with vicious laterals threatening to pitch you over the edge. But after that was the big drop, which plunged you into a narrow chasm in the ride structure with a scary headchopper at the bottom. This was the first big coaster drop I ever experienced.
    - Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce. The curving first drop isn't what this ride is known for. But it's a first taste of the crazy shooting-through-the-forest visuals that the entire first half of the coaster delivers, and you hit maximum speed at the bottom going past the station.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 года назад +1

      I prefer the drop on the older Superman hypers than SFNE's since the airtime is more sustained on that one. Boulder Dash's first drop certainly has a cool setting.

    Time Traveler- First Drop (In Back Row)
    El Toro- First Drop

    You included almost anything on this list I would have as well. Two things though: I personally would rate Hyperion higher. It combines Hyper height with good views and a sharpness that felt almost beyond vertical in the way it ejects you mid-drop. Also, have you ridden Lost Gravity at Walibi Holland? That first drop was amazing as well, especially in the back row, left wing seat. You go into it with quite some speed from the fast lift hill, the crest is very sharp and the 180° turn is extremely narrow, yanking you downwards with incredible force. This combination of laterals and ejector airtime makes it one of the best first drops in my books. People can complain about their launches all they want, but Mack really know how to bring the ejector.

    I personally like Expedition GeForce's first drop more than Kärnans. At least feeling wise. And I doubt there is a coaster out there with a better feeling drop - maybe yet. EGF has this bank in the drop that whips you to the right and then a little bit back to the left after the twist, and somehow that little detail makes it the best drop in the world for me. It doesn't look like much in pictures and videos, but the feeling it gives you is insane.
    I talk about feeling, because there may be better ones when putting visuals into account.. Like maybe Wildfire for example. Just like the coasters itself.. If I just judge by plain ride experience, EGF is still nr1 steel (+non hybrid) for me. But considering visuals, theming etc theres way better coasters.. Ride experience + theming or visuals, Taron for example. Or Velocicoaster
