If it's for vlogging, the 10-18mm might be the way to go but for everyone else, I think getting both is a must. They work well as companion pieces and with a cheap 75-300mm or 55-250mm, they make a budget-friendly, slow holy trinity zoom lens kit.
The 55 - 250 STM is a great lens for the price. Just for fun, I did a comparison with it and my Tamron SP 90 mm macro lens (well-regarded for its razor sharpness and image quality). I photographed the same image at 90 mm, f5.6, and ISO 100 on both lenses under as near identical conditions as I could get. Obviously, the Tamron was sharper: it cost about 4 times as much as the Canon, but I had to zoom in to almost 200% before I could see the difference. Colours and contrast were nearly identical. This lens is a no-brainer.
Even though the final result wasn’t exaaactly what I was expecting, I’ll definitely try 10-18mm, most because of the stabilization and range! Thanks, man!
Josh, please help... First, AWESOME video!! EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have a canon 80d and needed a wider frame lens for filming in small spaces. So I ordered the 10-18mm lens that you are showing here. But now Im reading online that theres a 1.6 crop factor with this lens on the canon 80d. What camera are you using the lens on here???? 7:10 Because if thats your canon 80d and the 10-18mm lens, that is perfect.
@@JoshWiniarski I was surprised how much more expensive the lens was than the standard 18-55 kit lens. I wonder why that is. I bought a used one and saved about 100 bucks. Thanks again for making this video. ;)
great vlog mate ...im going to get the 10-18 for my new canon 90d ...I must say i really enjoyed your Movie on both lenses ...great job ..keep up the great work ..best regards from the uk
I´m an in-house English teacher for a software company in LATAM, and I make my own talking head educational videos. Through trial and error, I've found that 35 mm is the best focal length for me and the environment I work in (anything less and I look like an ogre), so the 10 -18 is way too wide. I've even tried with the 24 mm efs STM, but, again, too wide - a great lens, though, for photography (my passion). The 18-55 kit lens on the Canon 90D produces sufficient image quality for my needs: I don't need it to be super sharp. I´ll be buying the 18 - 135 nano lens soon.
Both Lens is Great...IS & STM....Awesome...The focal Length incomparable between them. But In My Opinion, 18-55mm have little Edge over 10-18MM.1)ZOOM 2) LOW DISTORTION 3) LOW LIGHT CAPABILITY 4) BOKEH FOR BROLL 5) REALISTIC IMAGE QUALITY 6) Portrait. IT Has All around Capability than 10-18mm. But the 10-18 has a great advantage while vlogging and shoot Awesome landscape, city view, buildings... go on...I keep Both Lenses... If I have only one choice I take the 18-55mm kit Lens.....But now I have both in my kit...Great Informative Program Bro...Thanks a Lot...
Hi Josh I'm an aspiring travel vlogger (til COVID happens hehe) and my Canon camera has a kit lens of 18-55mm. I have been watching RUclips videos and the vlogger would always be captured with a wide angle lens when talking in front of the camera. Thanks for you review I have a better idea of what to consider as my future lens purchase.
Hey mate. Well I have decision to take. It might sound totally incomparable though but still.. S20 Plus v/s 10-18mm on canon 200D ? I am thinking of switching to Phone vlogging but still exploring options.
Oh man a question like that could take a whole video to explore haha. Personally, I wouldn't consider using a phone over a DSLR anytime soon. Assuming the video quality is equal, just having tangible buttons, the ability to swap batteries in quickly, all the custom settings and dials, being able to use other lenses, and even the flip screen are all great features. Again this is all just assuming the video quality is equal. Now you might not care about any of that stuff and just want to press record and talk to the camera. In that case I see the value in the phone and plus you'll have a nice new phone out of it. If you're into videography, filmmaking, and photography I can't recommend getting the phone, but if you're looking to make vlogs and RUclips videos I'd definitely say it's a viable option if you're going for good quality without putting in a ton of work and learning the craft of using a camera. Hope that sorta helps!
I have the 18mm-55mm and also the 55mm-250mm, but would also like to add the 10-18mm to complete out kit of zoom lens, to go with my prime 50mm. Do you think its worth adding ?
Great video very helpful thanks Josh! My big question- what lens are you using for the A roll stuff in your studio- looks great! You are sharp and defined from the backdrop with just enough bokeh behind you. So what lens and focal length are you using for your studio video and how far away are you from the camera and lens? I'll be setting up a studio soon would love to know! Would the 10-18 mm. work or not enough enough light for the lens? Thanks in advance for your response I'm a fan and just subscribed!
Glad the video was helpful! My studio/talking head shot is with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART lens. It's definitely on the spendy side, but the results speak for itself! The camera is typically 5 feet or so away to achieve the view you see. If you've got excellent lighting, the 10-18 could work, but usually it's a good idea to get a lens with an f/2.8 aperture for indoor shots. The Canon 24mm f/2.8 is a great entry-level option! Hope this helps!
@@JoshWiniarski Wow so good to know Josh thank you! That 30 mm. art lens with lots of light at 1.4 IS working for you looks perfect! I'll take your advice and look into the 24 mm. with the better f 2.8 aperture because I don't want to have flood my whole studio with light to make the Canon 10-18 mm. work well indoors with key lights etc.. Is is a full frame or crop camera you are using for that shot with the 30 mm. at five feet?
I also have a Tamron 17-50 f2. 8 constant is a really good lens if a little dated but honestly it's got quality and I love it and better build quality than those two....
I have sigma Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM for stills but I have no idea where to go after kit lens if shooting video. Suggestions? Kit lens is latest small 4.0 - 5.6.
My 18-55 is not STM cos mk II I think....dont do videos and blogging... but agree with your points.... You can virtually fly 10-18 ( not drone I mean) Good idea... you could put ext tube on 18-55 but a bit limiting...but okay if you shifting to diff lenses 😮!?
Hi.. I'm from India, I recently purchased Canon 10-18mm lens for my Canon M50 Mark II, however while vlogging with 10-18mm lens and boya wired microphone, the vlogging footage of the audio is very poor (low audio, some glitch like of noise). Don't know how to fix this problem... Would you help me on this..??!!
10-18 is much better cause it shows more of your surroundings than 18 to 55 and yeah 10-18 is much cheaper than other lenses out there but its still expensive though😟 but its worth the price.,,
Which one would you recommend, the canon ef 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 or ef 55-250mm 4.5-5.6? by the way, the lens will be used for youtube so i would need stabilization and good auto focus.
It'll definitely work, but unless you're planning on getting a full-frame camera soon it's overkill for sure. I'd look into the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or Canon 17-55 f/2.8 which are meant for crop cameras and cost significantly less. If you do want a lens you can keep for future cameras though, definitely go with the 16-35!
Unfortunately, if it focuses loud and is a bit "stuttery" it is probably not the STM version of this lens, and there isn't much you can do. If it is the STM version, there may be something wrong with it.
3:40 that's just stupid...the stabilization is made for panning and smoother shots in zoom or casual slowly walking...this is not a fcking GoPro stop running like this
