    85mm is used in a lot of Movies for focusing in on a character then they switch to 35mm to give the audience perspective of the setting, wihout revealing too much, making them think about what's about to happen next. The Village is a perfect Example

  • @thisiserich
    @thisiserich Год назад +11

    I would say if you can only afford one lens and you absolutely want a prime to get a 35mm lens. It kind of does everything you need from wide shots to tighter, more intimate shots. It’s also 3-4 times lighter than zoom lenses. Just gotta use your body as the zoom. Also, don’t forget that Sony cameras all have their aps-c mode. That means you can turn a 35mm into a 52.5mm with the click of a button. The sensor oversamples on the A7IV so even on aps-c mode you’re still capturing 4.6k downsampled to 4k. Full frame mode downsamples from 7k.
    When I leave the house I don’t like taking a huge cache of gear. I take my camera with one lens(35mm f1.8 on the body), a mic, a mini tripod, and a variable nd filter. That setup covers me for 90% of shooting both photos and video. It took me years to finally come to terms with this setup but I’m telling you, it’s so freeing to drop all that insane, mostly unused weight.

    • @syko1374
      @syko1374 Месяц назад

      I disagree.. 24mm..85mm..70-200 are basically all you need for 95% of any job..

  • @kenzito101
    @kenzito101 3 года назад +49

    Based on this it should be safe to conclude that the 24mm looks perfect for fast paced action, the 35mm for normal everyday action and the 85mm (or 50mm) is perfect for slow and surreal action.

    • @slurp3194
      @slurp3194 2 года назад +5

      35 and 50mm are almost interchangeable. I havnt seen any dp go that wide like 24mm they usually still to 35mm for wide actions scenes anything else becomes way too chaotic. 50mm is most commonly used it really doesn’t have a specialty you use it when ever for what ever super safe focal length and 85mm for film making is alot more rare.

    Hey, that is really a very good video! I have been a photographer since I was a child and have been photographing professionally for the last 16 years. I have also discovered video for myself some time ago. I was shooting weddings 99% of the time with two cameras, using a 50mm and a 35mm lens. Now, I have a 24mm lens that I absolutely love and use almost all the time for my videos, along with a 50mm. Since I got a new camera, I still need to buy the 35mm lens. I'm not sure if I really need it, but I don't want to miss having it. For me, 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm are the most important focal lengths. I use only prime lenses.

    Technically because the lower the focal length the more the image compressed into the frame which makes everything "moves" faster due to more image is moving in the same range/size, and this is also why you see some distortion around the frame.

    Ergens halverwege zeg je dat je je gimbalinstellingen moet aanpassen want dat je niet helemaal tevreden bent.
    Als je een recente gopro (of een ander apparaat dat gyroscoopdata opneemt) op je camera plaatst kan je nadien met gyroflow je beelden nog supersmooth krijgen.
    Zo kan je ALLE camerafootage stabiliseren, zelfs footage zonder gimbal opgenomen krijg je zo smooth als iets.
    Heb dit nog nergens in je filmpjes gezien maar lijkt me wel interessant.

    hey, weighing in late here. To me when using the 24mm the background needs to be interesting or at least NOT distracting, which I felt it was in the shots where there is a truck or hanger behind her. The 35mm blurs the background a bit more, which helps. And the 85mm definitely feels more interesting for cinematic shots, isolates the character. What do you think about the 50mm focal length for gimbal work?

    I am wanting to purchase a lense that is an upgraded or better quality than the Rf -18 -45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM …my budget is 700. Any recommendations ?

    good review and see the results in real time is wonderful..good job.
    now, what lens would you use for high speed camera wave for slow motion videos? indoor and outdoor use ? 85 mm?

      I think it doesn't really matter. It depends on how close you want to be to your subject 🤔

    I think 35mm is better for short films because it highlights the subject and also lets us to see what is going on in background with minimum blur.. that is really good

    Hello Joris, Great and informative video, please I would really appreciate it if you read my comment and reply. I do cooking videos and I would like to find Sony camera lens that is able to take 4k image to a cooking pan from about a meter away to avoid the heat and the splashing oil but at the same time to be able to zoom very close to get a micro image to the ingredients. I would really appreciate your help.

    What lens did you shoot the video in your studio with? I'm having some issues with AF and the items I show on my RUclips videos. MAYBE I just need a lot of b-roll.

    I really want to buy a 24mm 1.8 for my Lumix S5, but as it crops 1.5 when shooting in 50/60fps, I'm not sure it's with it. I already own a 18mm, 35, 50 & 85. what do you think?

    Which one you recommend for filming yoga videos for a website?

      I would go for something more flexible. Like a standard zoom.

    I know various lenses required for short films but the doubt is which lens suits most of the dramatic scenes 35mm or 50 mm

    really enjoyed the different focal length demos!! and the setting is so pretty!! Question, did you shoot in log? did you add stabilization in post? thx!! really love your videos :)

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  Год назад +1

      Log: yes! Stabilization in post: No, I turned on IBIS for extra smoothness.

      @@JorisHermans Thx!! the smoothness of your gimbal shots are amazing!! I've tried some walking shots with a Ronin RSC2 but the gimbal wouldn't hold the camera still which was very disappointing and ended up returning the gimbal. I'm sure some of it was user error but it would shake from left to right and couldn't seem to get it to stop that... thanks again for replying :)

    Awesome vid 👍 @Joris Hermans, nice comparison. Can't choose any 😅, all 3 of them are good in their own way while using it, & as you said it will mainly depend on what's the story, what needs to be conveyed, and the focal length.
    But maybe if I need to choose, I would go for the 24mm
    * I'm planning to go for either the Sony aps-c 50mm F1.8 OSS or Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my a6400.
