      If I can only bring one lens with me, the zoom 24-105mm f4 will have to be the one lens to pack in my bag. But I also like the 35mm to go with the zoom for most cases.

    24mm has a steeper learning curve but once you master it, it is a real story teller. It presents your subject in relation with his/her environment. I solely shoot street with 24mm

    I'm using Sigma 16mm F1.4 (24 mm equiv) on my A6000. Really like this lens and thanks to it's sharpness I can crop pictures to get a little bit of that 35mm feel without losing much quality

    Now, that’s what I wanted to see for a very long time! Luminar is great! I switched to prime lenses recently and not going back to zooms. Super35 just crops though. It doesn’t have an effect of a 35mm lens.

    I like the look of both, for different reasons. I think for making films, primes are the way to go, but for travel, street, stuff like that, it's good to have a great zoom, because you never know where you're gonna be, and what's going to happen, and so, I carry my 18-105 around most of the time on my Sony a6400, but for my film work, I use my primes. The only prime I always carry with me along with my 18-105 is my Samyang 12mm f2, in order to be able to get really wide shots if I need to. Also, it's so light, it's easy to carry, and I never found it hard to simply switch out lenses. Great video, as always, I always enjoy watching, and get tons of great insight. Much appreciated.

    After years of practicing photography I have found that 24 and 35mm are probably my most go to focal lengths, I have noticed that my shoots with clients tend to be more interactive since I have to get closer to my subjects for tighter shots. Definitely going to buy a 24mm GM Soon! That lens is so bad ass!

    Such great and classic focal lengths. The 35 has long been considered by many photographers as the true “normal” lens, not necessarily the 50. Decades of stunning Nat Geo images have been captured by photographers with a couple Leica bodies, a 21 and a 35 and a 90, all in a small bag. Primes are fantastic.

    Thanks for the comparisons Jason! I was choosing between the Sigma 16mm (24mm eq.) & Viltrox 23mm (~35mm eq.) for APS-C but I'll probably go for the Sigma after watching this. Was having a hard time making portrait shots work really good with the 16mm but after seeing your shots here, I'm convinced it's more of a user error from my side. Plus, I'll be cropping my shots most of the time for Instagram and my 24mm APS-C shots from my zoom lens really look zoomed in after cropping

    I was working in Japan earlier this year and the 24GM almost never left my camera. I've had the lens since it came out, and it can do just about everything I need. Having said that, I still got a copy of the Sigma 35mm/1.2 because I do a lot of concert photography and I need the extra focal length when I'm up close.
    Those are some great shots you got here, man. I wish Shibuya Scramble was available when I was there.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  4 года назад

      Do you shoot f/1.2 for concerts? How's the focusing? I bet if the focus was nailed, the photos would look dope as hell!

    • @TheDeadTexan
      @TheDeadTexan 4 года назад

      @@JasonVong I've used the 1.2 on my Rii and RIV and obviously the focusing is way better on the IV, but the II isn't that far behind in ample lighting. I do shoot wide open a lot with the 1.2 in concerts if I've got a subject I want to be in focus, but if I want to get more than one person in the shot then I'll stop down to 2.8 if I have to. Yes, it's a big lens, but you can't argue with the results. I think it's the best 35mm I've ever used on these Sony bodies.
      The 24GM still performs great for concerts, though. I shot a small hardcore show in Shibuya at a tiny club so I didn't really need anything more than my 24GM and the crop mode for semi-close up shots from my spot in front of the stage.

    I think if I were traveling, I would take the 24-70 gm master 2.8. If I were not traveling and I thought I’d be inside in a darkly lit area a lot, I would use the 24mm 1.4 or if I were doing astral photography. I feel like I’m losing too much with the 35mm, especially, as you mention, the ability to use the crop sensor on the A7r4

      @@thelonesoldier4518 Its a great entry level into intermediate photography/Cinematography. I have done pretty good research and the A6400 is the best bang for the buck. I just got mine a week ago with the 16mm-50mm kit lens ($998) and purchased a 16mm Sigma F1.4 prime lens (amazing lens) to start out with. I plan on getting the Sigma 56MM next month for closer portrait shots. My plan is to get familiar on how to use this set up and then save up for a Sony Full Frame Camera such as the Alpha 7 III (hopefully the IV will be out by that time). I did get a Ronin SC gimbal for that cinematic steady shots since the A6400 and the lens do not have OIS but from what i researched Sony has poor OIS in the 6500/6600 series anyways, so I rather save the 500 bucks and get a gimbal. One good thing to get for sure is the dummy battery for the A6400 if you plan on shooting videos inside. Unlimited power supply and have not had any over heating issues so far. Save the battery for outside use. You can't go wrong with the A6400.

    I have used the 24mm and the 35mm for landscape, travel, and street.
    For a one-lens/one-body situation, I have used both, but I prefer the 35 because the 24 is too wide for my taste as a stand-alone lens.
    For landscape, travel, and street, I prefer to pair the 35mm with an 85mm or a 90mm.
    For landscape, travel, and street, I prefer to pair the 24mm with a 45mm or a 50mm normal lens.

    For travel, my personal preference is a 35mm flanked by 21mm and 90mm lenses.
    For street, my personal preference is a 35mm f/2 or 35mm f/1.4 lens.
    The one zoom that I own that has the 24 and 35mm focal lengths is the 20-35mm f/2.8.

Both these lenses are quite small and one thing thats great for travel is the light weight. Apart from that I think 24mm is just not great for any sort of potrait, the focal length really deforms the facial features. The price and size of that 24mm gmaster is almost as much as the Sony FE 16-35mm f4, insane! Looking forward to the tamron releases.

    I have the 24mm and LOVE it!!! It is an incredible lens!!! I recently visited family and took two lenses, the 24 being one. I did a family photo shoot with it..worked out awesome! I purchased it for mostly ASTROphotograpy but have discovered its use goes beyond that..I pair it with the SonyA7lll which is a great match..Thanks,Jason..your videos and your work are awesome!!!

    very interesting comparison. for depth of field, do we see much difference between 1.4 and 1.8 ? are both good for fast eye detection and vieo AF ?
    what about sigma art DN ? i have a sigma 24, 35, 85 F/1.4 art on my d750 and they are amazing at 700-900 euros.

    I like both focal lengths but I think if you’re stuck with one focal length the 35mm is your most versatile. 24mm is a little wide.

    Both are actually good choices, but I think 24 mm win for that longer legs ability. What do you think about the price drop for Canon EOS R?

  • @thirdmort

    Just picked up the 24 1.4 and it looks great but the aperture mechanism seems excessively noisy when moving from 1.4-1.8 or so (or if I'm in AF-S above f/2.8 since it opens up for focus). I measured it around 48 dB on my phone. I'm curious if you've noticed anything like that on your copy.
    Thanks!

    Hi Jason. My current line-up includes: 20mm 1.8 G, Zeiss 55, and the new 70-200 f4. Would you add the 35mm f/1.4 or the Tamron 28-75 G2 for travel purposes?

  • @bobyu84

    I waited 9 months to finally purchase the 24mm GM. I've used it once in the past 4 months. Honestly, the 16-35 f/2.8 is the only lens that I ever use. I'm sure some will prefer the fast primes, but the versatility of the 16-35, along with it's quality, just does it for me.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  4 года назад +2

      can't argue with you on that. 16-35GM is so good. Honestly, it could replace both of these lenses for the large majority of the photos I displayed in this video. Most of them aren't even at f/1.4

      True that, it's all about personal style. I also got the 16-35 and use it as much as you your 24. However I'm rocking my 55 and 85mm. Just a huge fan of this dope prime lenses.

    I have the sigma 14-24 lens which is fantastic. But it’s huge and heavy I only plan to use it for traveling and landscapes. I really like the 24 GM and it will be great for street photography and night photography. But I am not sure if it’s worth it to get a new lens just for the two extra stops of light. Any suggestions? :)

    I'll choose 24mm. Because in the Sony's Fullframe cameras they have a function to use a FE Lens like a APS-C Lens.
    It means when I use a FE 24mm Lens with that function, then I'll get at 36mm. So I have 2 focal length in one Lens =))
    That's why I will choose 24mm than 35mm.

    I love the 24 especially when it comes to Astrophotography. I don’t own the 35 but I do own the 85 f/1.8. Which I sometimes use for landscaping by stitching several photos into a pano.

      Jason Vong You should give it a go with your 35mm or 85 (both in portrait orientation). I did it all the time when I lived in Alaska. Since I only own 3 different lenses 24, 85 and 100-400.

    I picked the Samyang AF 24mm f1.8 FE, which is the equal or better than the Sony GM (it's just as sharp but it has less CA, better flare resistance, it's about half the weight (230g) and it's 3 times cheaper than the Sony!)...And for travel, you can't get a better 35mm lens than the Samyang AF 35mm f2.8 FE (officially the lightest AF lens in the world at only 84g (without caps)...A double aspherical element wonder. I fitted a Dixons lens hood on it that weighs 16g, making it exactly 100g with the hood fitted but without the caps.

    So if you are going with a f2.8, will you get the same quality with a zoom f2.8 at the same focal length as the prime? I understand the wiggle room going to a wider aperture. I understand it’s doubling the price, and getting more range.

    Hey Jason can you help me figure this out:
    Which lens in your opinion is better on a Sony a7iii: Sony E PZ 18-105 mm F4 G OSS VS Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 (For Video)
    Which lens in your opinion is better on a Sony a7iii: Sony E PZ 18-105 mm F4 G OSS VS Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 (For Photography)
    The reason I ask this way is because I heard crop lens are actually better for video on the a7iii! So my guess is that the Sony 18-105 may be better for sony a7iii for video but the Tamron 28-75 is better for photography on a sony a7iii. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If the Tamron 28-75 is better on a sony a7iii for video & photography, it will make me sell my Sony 18mm-105 lens (unless I should keep that for my sony 6300).
    Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thanks

    I've been using a 35mm 1.8, and sometimes I have the sensation that I need something wider cause the 35mm it isn't enough wide. But I've never ned more zoom, so I might be changing my 35mm for a 24mm. Thanks for the video! Greetings from Barcelona!

    Currently have the a6000 with 35mm, sigma50mm and 12mm Rokinon. A7ii just the kit lense. Your videos are hilarious. Keep sharing!

    It still comes down to using your feet. With a 24mm lens, I can always take a few steps forward to get a little closer/tighter. However, with a 35mm lens...I can't always take a few steps back, sometimes. I'm using this to justify purchasing the 24/1.4, of course. Do want.

    • @ezustnyar
      @ezustnyar 3 года назад +1

      I`m not sure if I can agree on that with you. There are many many situations when you cannot step forward to get closer especially when doing landscape/cityscape photography eg. you are at the edge of a cliff / bridge / building / fence etc.

    • @GregKPerry
      @GregKPerry 3 года назад +1

      @@ezustnyar Depends on what the bulk of your photography is centered around, then. For the work *I* do, the 24mm is always handy and useable. A 35mm lens is in an awkward zone between the 24 and a 50mm, for me. Cheers.

    I was watching allot videos, read allot and I have that idea, since I wanna do only stills, I think to get Sony A7r iv and the 24mm Gmaster F1.4. Got enough megapixels so if I need a 35mm. I think to try the rIV in apsc mode, I think it will be around the 35 focal length and still with allot of pixels. That is my own opinion ofc. I am an amateur:)
