I like the monopod tip! Interesting seeing the different focal lengths you use on gimbals. I normally shoot wide to keep the bumps minimal, but might try some tighter shots in the future and see how I go.
Great information on lens and parallax - things I haven't realized before! Thank you. On my Canon C70 I've been going back and forth between a Canon RF 15-35 2.8 and a Tamron EF 24-70 (I use the speed adapter which gets me to F2.0). The Tamron isn't sharp enough and the Canon 15-35 can't really produce a shallow depth of field. I'm thinking of the Canon EF 35mm 1.4. Any other thoughts you might have would be appreciated. I shoot mostly medium to close subjects for broadcast commercials.
I think the 24-35mm focal length looks great on a gimbal so the 35 should be great....I use a 35mm like crazy. You do need to be a bit more gentle with your moves at 35mm or shoot slow motion but I'd say the 35 is my most used focal length for video and 50mm is my goto for photos
I tried the 14 on my last gimbal night walk. And, then I came back to your video. It sort of explained a lot of the issues of discomfort I had with the resulting footage from that 14. Its hard to use for such things. Even when you get close to something it feels blah. So, I picked up the 24 today and am actually looking forward to using it. It feels a lot more playful, even handheld. So, the 14mm will end up getting exchanged for something tighter than the 24 I think. Thanks for publishing this.
@@learningcameras Mm, it felt like dead glass taped to a stick. So anyhow, the 35mm GM came home to replace it. Yeah its close to the 24 I already have-but I do think there is a good opportunity for both to shine in their own ways.

Hey! So the DJI RSC2 can do a vertical shot and you can set it to one of the modes to be able to access it with just a button on the back of the gimbal. Might be your best bet: bhpho.to/3dyIEq5
Love this video! Which zoom lens do you recommend for a run & gun shooter? I'm always on the move for my job filming construction sites on a gimbal and would love the ability to switch focal lengths in a single lens to save time from having to switch lenses. The monopod tip is a gamechanger thank you!
Awesome! I tend to use a 16-35 the most for situations like that. Most 16-35 lenses don't change the center of gravity too much when zooming so I can usually zoom without having to rebalance anything
How about connecting gimbal with wheels, like skateboard or special track skater wheel I saw on AliExpress? Is it good to connect that with monopod for real estate?
So the risk to wheels is that gimbals can pull out rotation based issues like pitch and yaw but they don't remove micro vibrations so attaching something like a wheel with out a buffer to remove vibrations (like your arm) could be an issue unless the floors are completely smooth. I'd still make sure any wheels are rubber with some vibration dampening effect
Can you please help me 🤕 I am a fairly beginner, love gimbals but I struggle to use them efficiently (currently using Ronin RS3). I am so confused in what lens I should be using - although your video helped a bit. Still confused about : what about re-balancing gimbal everytime you changed the lense? Just using a gimbal for family videos I have a tamron 17-28 and f1.8 35mm. I tend to grab the 17-28mm more often as in close spaces 35mm feels a bit narrow. Then again I probably should be using this more often. 28-200 is on its way which I intended to use for holiday photos only, but will give it a shot on the gimbal with 100+ focal length.
On the A7III it will work either way but ideally you would want to leave it off. I think Sony's newer cameras the IBIS works well with a gimbal but I feel like I occasionally noticed issues on the older cameras like the A7III....but only very occasionally
How do you change lens quickly on gimbal ? In a lot of cases, changing prime lenses requires re-balancing, so I usually stick with zoom lens for that reason.
So I find lenses that weigh similar...so the Sony 35mm F1.8 and 55mm F1.8 weigh almost the same so I can change without readjusting. Even if I throw on the 20mm F1.8 which is a bit heavier, I can usually just adjust forward/backwards.
I'm stuck with 14mm 1.8 gm and 20mm 1.8 g for pov video. Dan hoping you will compare these two lenses side by side for videography. As you mentioned 14mm has the image distortion and can't use variable nd filter, you have to use clip in nd filter. But it have ultra wide field of view. Hope you'll review these lenses near future 😀
Great work as always, Dan. Excellent information with your helpful personality makes for a killer video. I’ll take your advice and try using my 85mm on the gimbal more. I generally stick with a 20mm and 50mm only.
Hi, I wanna shoot race cars at the track and race car drivers in the pitlane more on video. What lenses should I buy first and should I buy a gimbal paired with a self-standing monopod?
Hey! Maybe something like a 24-105mm F4 zoom would be good to start with. That way you can change the focal length and you really don't need a wide aperture price for that. If you are super close to the cars, I'd say a 16-35mm would also be a good choice. You can always use the self standing monopod but if there is significant wind/vibration, it would be more at risk at falling. You could just throw a tripod plate on the bottom of your gimbal and attach it to a tripod for a static shot
Is that a crane 2s? I’m wondering because I have a Sony a6600 and want to get a battery grip and a Sony 16-55mm lens and was wondering if it would be able t handle the weight. Your setup looks much heavier so I’m assuming so lol
In theory yes but sometimes if you make a setup too front heavy or bottom heavy, you don't have enough room on the gimbal to balance it perfectly even if the gimbal can theoretically hold the weight. So keep that in mind! I'm sure it will hold the weight but there is no guarantee it will balance if you significantly shift the center of gravity away from the center of the camera
Hi. What is the monopod you are using please? The Benro listed is clearly different as it has 3 rotational locks and not 4. Ive tried to identify it but so far no luck. Not all 'self standing' monopods do a good job at self standing, the one in this video looks sturdy!

So with a crop censor APS-C Canon 90D. The 16mm is actually 25mm hmmmm I'm confuse. lol I do like my 18-35 ART on a APS-C (leave it at the 22-24mm) on my Gimbal. Thoughts?
I dont know what lens combo to buy, i make more videos than stills, i am thinking about buying a 24mm f1.4 and the tamron 35-150 f2 (A7IV), sounds about riiiight? Any suggestions?
Really depends on what you shoot. I personally use a 35mm prime way more than a 24mm on the gimbal but some people love the 24. The Tamron 35-150 is great but it doesn't have stabilization so it tends to be best on a tripod. When I shoot weddings, I'll usually have a 35mm on the gimbal and the Tamron 35-150 F2 on a tripod for a 2nd camera. When I shoot cars or real estate, I use a 16-35 on the gimbal and can still use the 35-150 on a tripod for detail shots
As someone who is just venturing into videography purely as a hobby, I find your videos extremely helpful and to the point. Have you used Tamron's 35-150 on a gimble?
Thanks!!! I have but not often. It's pretty heavy and then center of gravity will shift while zooming so I've only used it a few times on a pretty heavy duty gimbal like the DJI RS2 or RS3 Pro
Great info thanks! My question is that I am starting up as a videographer n am getting my first gear. I would like to know if the Canon 35 mm 1.8 Macro is a great choice if I only can buy one lens? At such focal length I will not get the parallax though?! This is further complicated by the choice between the APSC R7 and the full frame RP. Appreciate your advice!
So 35mm and 50mm are the lenses I use the most. If you use the 35mm on the APSC R7, you'll get a bit more parallax because it will look like a 50mm lens and that's where you start seeing it. It's still a great lens on full frame, just don't expect a lot of parallax when shooting around objects
@@learningcameras actually I have my eye on the Sony 40/2.8 and the 50/2.8 Macro as well. But at the same price, the entry Sony A7 doesn’t support 4k 60p but the R7 does. Can u mix frame rates in a video? My iPhone shoots at 60p but why is the playback not slow motion?
Hi Dan For cinematic video i can start with canon 50mm f1.8 stm that's all I have at the moment or do I need something with image stabilisation? I mean is it must to us IS lens on gimbal? Thanks in Advance
You don't need an IS lens on a gimbal. IS is best when you are trying to hold something still and since you are moving on a gimbal, it won't do much. Sometimes it helps clean up some micro jitters if you are using a long lens but that's about it
@@learningcameras Thank you very much. Well I'm just starting in video, I come from photography, these tips of camera equipment and movements are very usefull for me.
My two lens solution for every occasion, 1) Sony 16-35GM f2.8 and planning to get 2) Tamron 70-180 f2.8 for some handheld b-roll. In apsc mode they crop to 52mm and 288mm respectively.
So you can use it on either one but on a full frame camera it is definitely a wide angle lens where as on an APSC it is more of that 35mm environmental lens. Everything in this video is based on full frame
I'm a huge fan of that lens and own it myself but the standard Sony 35mm F1.8 is already great so for video especially, the GM isn't really worth the price hike unless budget isn't much of an issue. Check out the standard 35mm amzn.to/3s8XDPQ
I'm curious what combinations of IBIS and lens OIS with Gimbal have you tried? I have an R5 and XT4 that both have IBIS and lenses with and without OIS.
I love Canon IBIS and the XT4 IBIS hasn't been all that bad. I use both with a gimbal and very rarely have issues. Sony and Fuji occasionally will stutter a bit with fast gimbal movements
FL HERE!! So I just bought the Weebill 2 for my Sony FX3. I’m using much heavier sigma lenses and I wondering if I should have gotten the Crane 3s??? Your thoughts?
Awesome!!! I'm out in Orlando but obviously shooting all over lol. Feel free to hit me up if you ever want to do some shooting! So I definitely prefer the Weebill 2 to the Crane 3S so if it holds the weight, you made the right choice. Another option would be the DJI RS2 which should hold more than the weebill 2 but be a bit nicer than the Crane 3S
nice vid and thanks a lot....do u use 70-200 at 200mm most or somewhere between??also some recomendations for a some good monopods would be great....thanks again
Thanks!!! So usually I'm in the 70-135 range on the 70-200. It's pretty rare I need to push things to 200mm and again, the only reason would be to see awesome parallax with a really small movement
@@learningcameras I was doing some corporate work this week, and the Monopod legs would have been a handy tricky. I ended up using R5 on Gimbal for B roll and C70 on Tripod for interview. Worked fine, but it would have been really handy to use just one camera setup.
Great video as always. So what about using the Sony 28-135mm Professional Lens? Yes slightly on the heavier side but a great video lens, your thoughts? Looking to use it with a vest and gimbal set up.
If you have a setup big enough for that then go for it! The advantage is that zooming doesn't really change the center of gravity much so you likely will not need to re balance when you zoom
I have a Canon M50 with Samyang 85mm AF. Would it be appropriate for me to buy a gimbal to get stable video shots. I would mostly do portrait shots with that lens.
Hey! So that would be pushing it...85mm on a crop sensor camera is tough to stabilize. The best way to do it would be to shoot slow motion and turn the gimbal down to the slowest settings because even small movements will be a problem. Something like a 35mm-50mm lens would be better for that.
Hey! So yes, the 10-20 and 28-135 can absolutely be used but be careful not to just zoom in and out for convenience and to use those focal lengths intentionally!
Thanks! So I'd usually start off with a zoom lens like the Sony 24-70 GM or Sony 24-105mm F4 and then look at adding a prime lens later. Once you use the zoom you will get to learn if you prefer shooting wide or tight and can get a corresponding prime lens that best suits it. I'd say most music videos would be between the 24-50mm focal length though occasionally you might go tighter for individual shots
What would be the disadvantage of just using something like an RF24-105, which picks up most of those prime lens focal ranges? I get the difference for still photography, but not sure if the impact is the same for videography on a gimbal. Is it just depth-of-field with the faster lenses?
Yeah, mostly just the F4 aspect VS wider aperture primes. Plus most 24-105mm lenses shift center of gravity significantly when you zoom anyway so you are always adjusting the gimbal so there isn't a huge convenience factor. If it was internal zoom without the center of gravity changing as you zoom, at least it would be significantly more convenient.
Great video, man. Thanks for keeping it straight to the point. Any tips for shooting Macro with a gimbal? I do a lot of product shots for tiny circuit boards that I sell and also my girl’s jewelry for Etsy and I’m trying to class it up a bit with my gimbal. I’m using a DJI RSC 2, Fuji X-S10, and XF60/XF80 Macro lenses. One big question I’ve been trying to figure out is if I should combine the XF80’s OIS and the X-S10’s IBIS with the gimbal or leave them off? Appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks man!
Thanks! So macro on a gimbal is crazy hard. Usually combining Ibis and ois is a good thing especially with gentle moves but electronic sliders are WAY easier for macro moves
I'm a huge fan of 4k60 for gimbals and a camera with good autofocus and the Canon R6II shoots amazing full frame 4k60. A more expensive but better option is the Sony FX3
It's not the gimbal shots that are overdone, it's the slo-mo gimbal shots. Seems like every video of a gimbal setup, lens choice, stabilizer set-up, innovation.... is just a succession of slo-mo masturbation shots. What was the last slo-mo movie anyone watched ever? It's more of a commercial trick than a storytelling tool. In the end it's like music recording... if the song is a masterpiece, nobody cares if it was recorded with a 4 track cassette recorder. Not many slo-mo songs out there either.
Dude, you know it takes days to make these videos and we don't get paid to make them and you don't pay to watch them... It's kind of hard for us to buy food and pay rent without a sponsor every now and then! If you want to support creators, sponsorships are one of the best ways to do it while keeping everything free. No one likes sponsorships but without these companies offering to support our channels, many of us wouldn't exist because somehow we need to eat while spending days trying to create the best content we can
What?!!! Wide angle shots not Cinematic? One of the Best DP’s in Hollywood “Chivo” has shoot academy award films with wideangle lenses only. he revenant, The Tree of life, etc. Do some research before dropping your content 3:14
I was talking specifically about overusing wide angle gimbal shots because of the distortion. If you don't keep your shots steady or stick to a specific movement like a push in, it can get warpy. I'm definitely not saying that cinema movies can't be shot on a wide angle lens. Also, this would be one of those rules that once you learn why they exist, you can start to figure out creative ways to break them...like most "rules". But I see people using wide angle lenses on gimbals way too much for shots that shouldn't be done with a gimbal or with a wide angle lens.

Hi Dan
For cinematic video i can start with canon 50mm f1.8 stm that's all I have at the moment or do I need something with image stabilisation?
I mean is it must to us IS lens on gimbal?
Thanks in Advance
You don't need an IS lens on a gimbal. IS is best when you are trying to hold something still and since you are moving on a gimbal, it won't do much. Sometimes it helps clean up some micro jitters if you are using a long lens but that's about it
Do you have a monopod you'd recommend?
I have the 20 mm G and the 55 mm 1.8. Thinking about getting something between but I'm not sure which focal length...
I personally use the 35mm like crazy but I know a ton of people obsessed with a 24mm
Thank you very much Dan, are you going to launch a course?
Thanks!!! I'm working on one for video but it will be more entry level. But feel free to give me topics you would like to see covered!
@@learningcameras Thank you very much. Well I'm just starting in video, I come from photography, these tips of camera equipment and movements are very usefull for me.
Great video Dan. Thanks for sharing the monopod tip. Which gimbal do you recommend for the Canon C70 for shooting Bride/Groom prep? Thanks
My two lens solution for every occasion, 1) Sony 16-35GM f2.8 and planning to get 2) Tamron 70-180 f2.8 for some handheld b-roll. In apsc mode they crop to 52mm and 288mm respectively.
thank you, nice video. The 20 mm lens, do you use it on a super 35 camera or full frame camera?
So you can use it on either one but on a full frame camera it is definitely a wide angle lens where as on an APSC it is more of that 35mm environmental lens. Everything in this video is based on full frame
Thank u bro it really help me out
what are your thoughts for 35mm GM for video?
Dan, did I ever tell you that you're my hero? Cause you are.
Hahahaha...thanks Chris
@@learningcameras I was doing some corporate work this week, and the Monopod legs would have been a handy tricky. I ended up using R5 on Gimbal for B roll and C70 on Tripod for interview. Worked fine, but it would have been really handy to use just one camera setup.
Please the Sony 18-105mm + a Sony a7ii is good on a gimbal like ronin sc !?
No, the Sony 18-105 is for APSC cameras...not full frame cameras. You would want a lens like this: bhpho.to/3APFPuj
Something like a 35mm-50mm lens would be better for that.
what sould i choose for a7iii crane 2 or dji ronin rsc2 or rs
I'd go for the RSC2 unless you use some crazy heavy lenses in which case get the RS2
hey dan! I don't have any fix lens. all I have right now is a sigma 10-20 and a canon 28-135. is there any problem if I use them on amy weebill S?
Hey! So yes, the 10-20 and 28-135 can absolutely be used but be careful not to just zoom in and out for convenience and to use those focal lengths intentionally!
@@learningcameras super!!! thanks for your reply :)))
What is the best lens for the sony A7s111 if you could only choose one? For shooting music videos. Great video btw!
Wasn't that the 35 1.8?
Actually it was lol. I thought it was my 24 at first but your eye is better than mine apparently!
@@learningcameras Thank you sir.
When are you going to be shooting next in Miami?
I was actually just there and came back yesterday. Was going to stay for a few days but ended up making it a quick overnight trip unfortunately
@@learningcameras there is always next time 😎 do you ever go fishing ? Kayaking ?
Great video! Love the channel! Thanks!
Appreciate that!!!
Many thanks!!!
whats the brand of your monopod ?
This is what I'm using now bhpho.to/34Nf7IA
@@learningcameras oh so its not the same from your video right ?
are you shooting with the sony and r5 lately?
Yep, pretty much everything I shoot personally is on the R5 or SIII. Just got the new Sony A1 in though!!!
@@learningcameras Can't wait to see your take on the A1!
@@acamilop Thanks!!! Testing it now and I have a huge shoot on Tuesday! Hope to have the video up Thursday AM
Great advices. Thanks.
-Looks up definition to "parallax"-
Thanks!
You bet
Awesome
Great great great video!
That was an amazing review man!
Appreciate that!
excellent video!
Amazing!
Top tips from Dan! Especially the monopod. Love it. I use the Canon EF 28mm 2.8 IS lens for gimbal and it is a great focal length.
Thanks!!! Yep, a 28mm is great
i shot w a camcorder from a tripod. old skool style
Best camera for gimbals?
I'm a huge fan of 4k60 for gimbals and a camera with good autofocus and the Canon R6II shoots amazing full frame 4k60. A more expensive but better option is the Sony FX3
@ thank you ! I'll save up for the FX3.
Good Video. ButI I was always wondering, why people upload a tutorial like that in 4K?
Actually, youtube gives better bitrate options in 4k which is the main reason I do it
you never explained paralax
It's not the gimbal shots that are overdone, it's the slo-mo gimbal shots. Seems like every video of a gimbal setup, lens choice, stabilizer set-up, innovation.... is just a succession of slo-mo masturbation shots. What was the last slo-mo movie anyone watched ever? It's more of a commercial trick than a storytelling tool. In the end it's like music recording... if the song is a masterpiece, nobody cares if it was recorded with a 4 track cassette recorder. Not many slo-mo songs out there either.
At 0:07 - showing people unsafe shots like this out the back of a car when you're not strapped in, is dangerous.
When u start video and u have to see the sponsor & add takes away the motive to watch
But I see people using wide angle lenses on gimbals way too much for shots that shouldn't be done with a gimbal or with a wide angle lens.
the sigma 18-35 beats all these lenses
That lens is definitely like having 2-3 prime lenses in one! It's amazing
