- As usual, Apple no longer supply a bootable USB Flash Drive with latest OS X releases - including the new OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
Using this tutorial you will be able to create your very own bootable USB Flash Drive using Apple's newest operating system, El Capitan, in 3 easy steps!
Command used in this video:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

[Update] If you would rather a graphical interface instead of working with text based commands, check out UUByte DMG Editor (bit.ly/3DSwYKO), which is capable of creating bootable macOS USB installer on both Mac and Windows platforms!!
It took me 8 hrs to figure out what I was doing wrong but unlike people that will complain instead I thank you for the guiding us with this video. - Side note- if anyone is still struggling with this issue make sure you have El Capitan installed on your apps and not on your desktop.. other wise you are inputting the wrong command with this code. and make sure you follow step by step what it says here because if you rename the drive something other than OSX it will not work because its also embedded in the code.
thx
Wiped the OS and couldn't download as Apple have removed it from the App Store.
This tutorial was clear and worked even easier than Disk Maker X. Cheers!
By far the best El Capitan to bootable USB flash explainer that I've found. Especially the great tip regarding stray hyphens and such. Thanks.
It worked like a charm. Thanks for making this video for those of us who are less tech savvy.
Nice. Very clean and professional tutorial. Already knew how to do this just needed a reminder. Much appreciated. Keep up the great work ;-)
Worked for me -had to improvise a few things to follow the video whilst running OSX El Capitan. Thank you.
being on this installation for over 4 days and then your method worked for me, thanks a lot
Tobi WebDev how did you find the download it’s not in Mac store
working perfectly, thank you very much spent several days looking but no one explained it that way.
Hi Bashir, thank you so much for your very easy to follow video that packed with so much information that allowed me to be able to reinstall El Capitan on my old MBP. Followed all steps to the T and did not face any issue at all.
Great. Glad it helped!
Thanks for the clear instructions. great job.
thanks a lot for this video. i got an old imac that was giving me the "temporarily unavailable" issue and your guide totally saved my computer. it's running really well now. thanks!
I’m getting the same message, did you get it when you tried to type in the Apple ID and Password? I’m going to try this method.
quick, clean and easy tutorial.
Well done on this video. It's concise which I like. Disc utility looked a little different on my sierra mac but was still able to blunder my way through the process and make a bootable usb drive that actually worked on the early 2008 imac that I just picked up for my mum today for AU$50. Thanks to you and a little effort from me she can now order her groceries on a 21.5 inch screen rather than an ipad screen which I think will make like a lot easier. Many thanks.
Plus, it didn’t have a lot of useless annoying and loud background music!
Bless your heart. worked like a charm. saved many headaches
Finally the first understandable video that I could find, thanks
I was giving a Old iMac 2009 and didn't have a OS X installed on the computer, so I had to start from scratch. To make a long story short,... your explanation of making a Bootable USB Flash Drive for El Capitan was great. Easy to understand... thank you very much for making it simple for us to understand.
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
Same ... and I laughed at the end becuase I was given a MacBook Air !
Thanks, you are a legend :)
Awesome, worked perfectly! Thank you
Thanks very much. Best video on youtube. Found this eventually and all successfully!
Thanks for the instructions. Got it done and without any problems. The instructions were clear and simple to follow and I have now completed the job and am very happy. Thanks
You're welcome!
Thank you - that's absolutely brilliant. I'd tried all over the internet before finding this video. So clear!
Glad it helped!

Awesome detail....thanks a million.
Hello, thank you very much for the tutorial, I have a question. I'm running Mojave trying to downgrade to El Capitan (I have a software that will only work on el capitan and earlier versions) When I try to boot from the USB drive (created with your sequence), I get the denied icon on my mac. (/)
Thank you!!! Needed this!
Very helpful- thanks!
Holy heck, I know I'm writing this 8 years after you made this video but it's saving my bacon right now. Thank you!!
Glad its still of use!!
Really good tutorial. Thanks

It takes some time to get everything right, but it did work for me after carefully following the instruction
possible to do this today? and i'm trying to upgrade my macbook from hdd to sad will it work?
Great film, thanks for the time you took and posting. Very clear, well presented and descriptions good, refreshed my brain prior to attemping a fresh install die to a sick hard disk replacement 10/10
You're the best! thanks a lot. I erased my Macbook pro with Maverick previously installed and since I haven't downloaded Maverick before and it isn't available on the apple store I was left without an operating system. This just solved my problem entirely.
hey bro, i tried thus and i have the same exact problem but when installing i am being told that the os x was corrupted.... what can i do?
I have el captain and my disk utility is completely different, I dont get the options you present!?
What OSX are you using?
Thanks for the help....
thankyouuuuuuu for sharing very helpful video might get there in the end thanx to you
Thank you sooooooo much!
Really big help. Thanks alot.
hey my friend Worked like a charm. I was sitting with a 2009 macbook Pro with a bare hard disk. Thank You!
My mac is currently running yosemite and i want to keep it with that. Could I install capitan onto the usb only to install on a different computer without effecting my current os x?
Still waiting for the installation file to be copied to the disk, but I'm already thankful: yours it's the first tutorial that took me so far!!!!
if the disc on your mac is named OSX then just follow the instructions from the video but name your usb drive OSX2 and follow his instructions to erase and partition it but use OSX2 as the name - and when you get to the part where you have to use the terminal use this - sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX2 --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction - then it should install to your usb drive good luck
This is the ONLY one that works on RUclips
nice, and clear demo. Question I am very hesitant to uninstall Snow Leopard because of third party software that I enjoy using and do not want to output extra cash to upgrade. I'd like to know if I can run OSX from the flashdrive, with out effecting the snow leopard?
Thanks so much; clear and concise advice.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much, how simple, especially when explained so clearly!
Now that's the way make video. Any one can understand. Thanks man.....
Ben Felizer your last name looks like fertilizer
worked perfectly thank you
When you have done your usb, boot it by pressing alt key. Select the usb from boot screen then from top menu firstly select disc utility and format the destination part after that select terminal screen and rearrange date to year 2016. After that begin to installation. Other wise gives error. Hope this will help👍
Thanks Ifti even though I'm a Windows user myself:-)
Cheers Kym
Thank you worked like charm !

You saved my life, thank you so much!!!

hey, how did you find El Capitan in the App Store? I can't find it there =/
@@guilhermekfwst same
Hi! What is the point of partition, is it necessary? I am running catalina but downloading capitan right now so that I can install it on my iMac, but the disk utility partition tab in capitan looks different than the one on the OS you're using. Going to try, but if you have any advice it's appreciated.
Is the sandisk cruizer a good brand of flash drive for this
Worked with the correction from Jalal Ahmed below, thanks!
Suppose I want to do this from a machine running Mavericks (10.9.5.). I've already downloaded the installer file for El Capitan, but haven't installed it yet. Would I have to change any of the steps in Terminal to create the bootable installation drive?
YOUR THE MAN. You helped me out on the error „this item is currently unavailable. Please try again later“ as i tried to reinstall Mac os x el Capitan on an old mac book late 2010. for those who try to find the old os software el capitan: you can find it only directly on apples homepage, not in the app store anymore. Thanks
Hey, thanks for the video! When running the .dmg for the El Capitan installer I get - “Install OS X El Capitan” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." I manually dragged the install app into the Applications folder and ran the command, but the command doesn't work and the “Install OS X El Capitan” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." popup reappears. How can I get around this? Currently running 12.6.5 to create this USB.
Best video!! Super easy to follow the instructions and it worked!! Thank you!
how did you get the download from the app store?
Shushfilms no! I didn’t find it at the App Store so I went on the Apple website and downloaded from there!
@@nativadomar how did you get the command to work then if it's not in your applications? When i downloaded it it gave me a .dmg file that went to my downloads.
Shushfilms OS X El Capitan
El Capitan downloads as a disk image. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.
It's been 8 years, but this is still useful... i have a question for u tho. I have a 2007 imac that has a password on it that i can't for the life of me, remember. Can i do what u said to do on a separate computer and then put the usb into the 2007 mac and install it from the boot menu or no?
will this work on a mac book pro 2009 running os x 10.5.8 please help
I'm upgrading to an ssd and adding more ram
When i make this and install it on the New ssd harddisc do i so still have iphoto, iTunes, imovie and the other standard programs? +iftibashir
I need this again. That goodness I had this on a usb drive
can I please ask, are they double hyphens or a shorter double hypen? What key would create the short hyphen?
I'm not able to use or have the partitions layout option that you have. but allows me to resize, format, rename a partition name of USB flash drive.
Thank you very much.
Will this work with SD card reader? Every time I erase, it completes the erase but won't allow me to click partition
Can this be used to repair an installation of El Capitan? I accidentally deleted system files and now El Capitan doesn't work. I try logging in but the progress bar goes for a bit and then the computer just shuts off. I have Filevault enabled but I really need to be able to get in and retrieve my files!
Thank you so much! Installer created with ease. Really appreciate your generous help!
Thank you sooo much ❤️❤️❤️
Any reason why my downloaded OS Sierra is a .DMG file in the "Downloads" section of Finders an NOT inside applications? I can't go inside to "view contents"
Thanks!
