Only heard of this due to ufc but I'm curios, as someone that's never done any martial arts, is this a submission technique of a choke? Seems like it would be more painful on the shoulder than choking. Just going off what it looks like though
In order to apply a blood choke (as opposed to a choke that obstructs the airway) the two carotid arteries on either side of the neck must be compressed. The d'arce choke uses your hand and your opponents' shoulder to block the 2 carotids.
Definitely a choke. The shoulder is lock in place to choke one side of their neck but it doesn’t apply any pain to the shoulder. It’s sort of like a triangle choke but with your arms.
It also hella hurts 😂

Yeah there’s more stuff in the way. Especially if it’s in the middle of a roll and the gi is a messed up
I have success in both. If the arm is through enough then no reason at all it won’t be just as effective.

Can you go for the anaconda choke too from that position?
100% yes. At 1:32 from that position you can do the Rafa Mendes arm trap and use your legs to trap their arm deeper. From there you can anaconda or switch to darce like what Edwin is doing. If either isn't working you can keep switching back and forth until you get the finish.
