  • Yes, it was that Donald Trump who lent his name to this talent-filled bicycle stage race over the eastern U.S. in 1990. I cut the fluff from the beginning so it pretty much goes right into the action. The overall race was a pitched battle between a young squad of Russian amateurs and the heavy-hitters of the pro peloton. There was a lot of drama packed into the individual stages- witness Davis Phinney's frustration at being dominated by the East German Olympic Champion Olaf Ludwig in the sprints. See local boy Mike McCarthy valiantly strive to win in his hometown of Manhattan/Central Park. Riding for Raul Alcala on Team PDM was the future 1990 World Professional Road Race Champion, Rudy Dhaenens. The finishes included solo breaks, breaks of 2-3 riders, as well as field sprints.
The race roster included a multiple Tour de France winner overall as well as stage winners, (Greg Lemond, Olaf Ludwig, Raul Alcala, Davis Phinney, Erik Breukink), current, past, and future Olympic champions (Olaf Ludwig, Viatcheslav Ekimov), and past/present/future World Professional champions (Rudy Dhaenens, ‘90, Lemond ’83 + ’89, Mike McCarthy (pro pursuit ‘92)). Also riding was Andy Hampsten, winner of the 1988 Giro d’Italia as well as multiple Tours of Switzerland.
