This was the one of the best documentaries of cycling that I have ever seen, great video as well as montage, as well as explaining the short story of absolute legend cyclist.
That 60km/h attack on the cobbles of Roubaix tho…absolute animal. But there is one other thing that he does brilliantly-the leadouts for Philipsen at last year’s Tour were a joy to watch.
For the controversy around 7:20 I would say that I didn't actually see him pull, instead I saw his hand go up and then sideways, into the FDJ rider's side, in order to make sure that the rider knew he was there are if he kept going they both would likely go down, so it may have helped them both stay in the race.
The FDJ rider has a name: Ramon van Sinkeldam. The defending champion that year. He himself said Mathieu fairly beat him. Part of the problem is the bend in the finishing straight.
But back on topic: Sinkeldam would have pushed MvdP into the barriers if Mathieu hadn't signaled him with his hand. Pure self preservation. No controversy at the time and no controversy now. Such a shame you feel like you need to smudge this 'typical' great MvdP victory. What makes him unique is his enormous capacity to recover during a race. So even when he has attacked, he's still able to win a sprint a little later. A one in a generation talent with a kind heart and a good moral compass. Enjoy him while you still can.
Crazy thing is that despite everything MVDP has done, he's still only 29. He has 10 more years, 5 of which in peak form, to amaze us even more. The Netherlands is in the golden era of sporting athletes with Jeffrey Herlings, Max Verstappen, MVDP, Femke Bol, van Gerwen etc. It's good to be alive as a Dutch sportsfan!
@@psd9850 You are only proving his point. "It is estimated that over 700 people around the world are killed each year as a result of toaster fires and electrocutions."
I knew what happened already in all these races... but the way you made this video, the suspense was like watching everything for the first time. Brilliant!
I'm pretty sure Mathieu Van Der Poel just signaled the FDJ rider that he'd pass, he didn't actually pull the FDJ rider, but simply alerted the FDJ rider that he'd pass from the left side, and he needed to alert the FDJ rider since he was pretty close to the barrier
I am comparatively new as a viewer of professional cycling, your videos are just too good. Almost feels like crying when they win, you make their success feels mine. Amazing job Rifianboy..❤
I am a UCI National Commissaire and what I saw in the sprint was Van der Poel preventing a bad crash and protecting himself and the other rider. I do not see that as a reason to penalize him.
Absolutely fantastic! And just to illustrate, my favorite cycling moment of all time was actually MvdP on Mur de Bretagne, taking yellow for his grandfather Poulidor with an incredible double attack; one to get the bonus seconds he needed, and the second for the stage win. ❤ But such a great documentary; great images as well; dankjewel Hamza!
Completely agree, that really was totally epic. I was there when he out sprinted Van Aert tot become world champion cyclocross 2 years ago, and that sure was awesome too, but it was the grabbing of the bonus seconds to just nab the yellow that made the Bretagne stage so special.
I don't know anything about these cycling tournaments and all these hardworking people like Van and others, but I'm getting to know a lot of things since I started watching these videos. Thank You.
6:00 seeing Mathieu riding and winning on the roads I used to live and play is engraved in my memory. And we had many memorable victories on those streets. My 1st goes back to Jan Raas winning the world championship on that road in 1979 when I was just 8 years old.
That is incorrect. Wout even though he is older used to be smaller and less muscular than Mathieu van der Poel until they hit their twenties. He grew a bit taller and became a lot stronger. So Wout changed a lot over the years.
It’s always heartwarming when a competitor congratulates the victor after a great race and close finish. I’m so glad the algorithm started recommending cycling videos out of the blue.
I think that his biggest quality is that he can recover way better and more quick then his colleagues, next to all his other excellent qualities. Mentally he is very strong too.
man, your documentaries should be on netflix. I would really want to see a series of episodes or a long form one, the way you deliver interests and narration is chef-d'œuvre
The touch on the sprint he did was amazingly gentile, he didn't even push. The other guy never complained about it. I love the documentary, but I'm sure Mathieu shocked the world as well when he almost won his first World Championships in 2019 and when he knocked himself out of the Tokyo mountain bike race. And the way he won the Tour de France stage that got him the yellow jersey by going early which no one realised is definitely missing. However: great video, thank you very much! So for me, it should be 10 (and counting, of course).
Brilliant documentary. Thanks for this. My favourite rider, and I’ve met him in person wearing the pink jersey. Awesome stuff . I write this the day before the olympics race in 2024. Let’s hope for another MvdP show tomorrow 🏆👍
Love videos like this. MDVP is my favorite cyclist even when he’s away from pro cycling. Would love to see you cover wins from unexpected/underrated riders over the years
Awesome short documentary! I very rarely watch cycling, and don't know anything about Van der Poel except by name (I'm Dutch too), but this documentary was really well-put together and kept my interest all the way. Very well done on this video!
Thank you so much!! There are great movies out there. But this documentary is absolutely incredible! I was amazed, awed, inspired, shocked and flabbergasted so many times watching this. And I don't even own a bicycle, lol! 😅 Van Der Poel is a real life superman! I even downloaded it to watch it again some other time. 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎉❤
@patricks5232 Wout is also a killer. He has won so much. But he is just a little less able on steep climbs, where he tends to lose most on MvdP. Also in the sprint, Wout is excellent but sadly for him MvdP can match that when it matters it seems. So MvdP is just even a slightly bigger talent than Wout is, but it is still so close. Thank God, we have seen how boring it gets without Wout like this first half of the season.
I watched this video I think five times already, somehow YT keeps recommending it and it keeps getting played on auto play next video :) I never turn it off, it's captivatingly well done!
7:30 van der Poel was definetly not in the wrong. He may have pushed his opponent out of the way, but he was going left and more left almost into van der Poel which is definetly wrong
LOOK at VDP in the last seconds - in NO way did he pull or shove ANYONE ! VDP simply guarded his lane to make sure the other rider didn't push him into the barrier. NO foul play whatsoever !
You missed a great opportunity to show a bloodied MVDP in that championship race after the crash. When they showed him after the race with his kit tore up and bloodied, it was a striking visual.
I'm an adaptive cyclist riding a handcycle. I was blown away at how many watts he was pulling. I'm not a world class athlete in any respect but I usually avrage 140 watts in a race and can sprint short distance at 500 watts. Seeing his avrage 1300 watts blew me away. Ok that said, the issue you pointed out with pushing the other cyclist, to me it looked as if FDJ was trying to hit his front wheel and make him crash and he prevented it.

He didn't pull him, he was letting him know he was there. And the FDJ rider didn't even complain
His name is Ramon Sinkeldam, and he specifically said afterwards it was fair play
7:35 Exactly, it was touch to let know his presence. Competitor had no reason to seek that leftmost position, if moving forward.
He was probably happy that he let him know he was there.
Could have turned into a disaster as we've seen elsewhere.
He save a horrible crash
looked more pushing than pulling, seemed fair and might have prevented a crash
"Because I was cold" Still the most incredible answer om the question "Why did you jump so early?"
I thought he was gonna be like 💩💩😂😂😂
