1992 Tour du Pont Days 5-11
Taking place on the east coast of the U.S., this edition has many legends of the sport, such as Greg LeMond, Gianni Bugno, Laurent Fignon as well as up and coming U.S. amateurs like George Hincapie and Lance Armstrong. Michel Zanoli punches a motorcycle camera man and then later smacks Davis Phinney in the mouth in a final sprint. Great Stuff! This is the CBS version, not the "Zuperman" version.

1991 Tour du Pont

Now with Donald Trump no longer sponsoring the race, the former "Tour de Trump" lives on as "Tour du Pont". The DuPont company (makers of Lycra, among other things) takes over title sponsorship. A young U.S. amateur Lance Armstrong makes his premier U.S. stage race debut in this race, and cycling great Sean Kelly makes an appearance on U.S. shores.

This is one of the earlier races of Laurent Jalabert before he became the mega-star of the Tour de France. Kurt Stockton is the first US finisher and thus becomes the U.S. Professional Road Champ. June 17, 1990. Side note: A little fellow named Richard Virenque raced this race in 1991 and finished 27th. Results: 1st Paolo Cimini, GIS/Benotto 2nd Laurent Jalabert, Toshiba 3rd Kurt Stockton, Amer...

Yes, it was that Donald Trump who lent his name to this talent-filled bicycle stage race over the eastern U.S. in 1990. I cut the fluff from the beginning so it pretty much goes right into the action. The overall race was a pitched battle between a young squad of Russian amateurs and the heavy-hitters of the pro peloton. There was a lot of drama packed into the individual stages- witness Davis ...

1981 Coors International Bicycle Classic - LeMond vs. the Soviets

Greg LeMond and his Renault teammates battle the Red Machine for dominance. However, the Soviets and other East Bloc nations had a history of valuing the team win rather than the individual top prize, and they win that prize here. 1980 Olympic Road Race Champion Sergei Soukhorutchenkov is on the team. Presented by permission of the Race Director and Film Producer.

Bernard Hinault works hard for Greg LeMond in this, the first race appearance of the Badger. The roster includes the East Germans. Davis Phinney complains about Hinault sitting on then sprinting for the win, but I think he was right as LeMond his teammate was in the leader's jersey. Coming of a wheel for the win was normal for Phinney; I can't remember him ever soloing in for the victory in the...

1978 Red Zinger Classic Bicycle Race
Possibly the peak of American cycling. Things were never quite like this again after the Coors went away. Even with the Amgen Tour or the USAPC, the American scene has been in a slow steady decline ever since. And the Lance bump was temporary and completely mishandled by USACycling.
Phinney is a weird SOB and a cheat. Just ask Roberto Gaggioli.
~ 9:18..... 'after 30 miles...' really? I realize this video is from the era when US cycling was typically 25 mile crits, but still.... 'after 30 miles ?????' Maybe after 200K, but 30 mils ? I don't think so.
i love Mike Engleman weird Posture on the Bike...but still so effecient 100%
87 must have been the first year that some brake levers had the cables routed under the handlebar wraps as some guys have that set up and some guys don't yet.
Clearly this was the inspiration for American Flyers.
Thats crazy that they were riding like that without helmets
Look how empty it is out on The Morgul Bismark.
Not true, a good one day rider does not necessarily make a good stage racer.
I love how they rode with no helmet and people weren't having fits
Doped Russians.
This is like looking at an old high school yearbook! Faces I haven't seen in ages. Alexi's interview is so Alexi @14:37 I love that guy. Also seeing Bill Walton @31:10 is cool as hell. He rode almost every mile of almost every Amgen Tour and USA Pro Challenge with Chris Carmichael's group from 2006 to 2019 And we'd see him every day standing out on the course with a huge smile on his face. And holy cow, it's Beth Estes at @35:00. And Anje Beck and Len Pettyjohn. And Mike Aisner. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for that. Awesome video.
So cool to see all these stars so young...
Grewal is such a drama queen 🙄
The very best part of this coverage is at 39:50 where we get to see Davis Phinney completely lose his shit for over half a minute. Time well spent!!
Nice to see better women’s coverage evolving at this point
6:16 Denis Bushnell of Bushnell Cycle Design made those frames that Crest was riding. The team was sponsored by Cannondale & the UCI said that the frames didn't conform to spec's. So, they needed an emergency batch of frames sprayed up to look like a Cannondale, made out of steel. ( coulda been the '89 race)
TLDR - intro to cycling, Greg has a lead of undisclosed minutes and seconds, and maintains - yay Greg! Oh and Connie Carpenter won too. My how coverage has changed into actual reporting. Hope they found that kid that was lost btw
0:26 Andy Hampsten in red/yellow/black
Thanks for posting this! I watched this a hundred times when I was 14 years old. It was very motivating!! Good to see it again. I’ve lost my vhs tape.
Look at the bikes - steel frames, only 5-6 cogs in back and the standard 52/42 crank in front.
Awesome film. I lived in Boulder during the 7-11 era, back when I wished for nothing more than to go really fast on my bicycle. Legions of fast guys to chase, great time and place, there then.
Was on the Western Slope at the time. Geo. Mount a big star; gold at Pan Am and sixth at the Olympics.
1 yr later Lemond got 2nd in the World Championship 2yr later Lemond got 1st in worlds championship
So glad to see a film about bike racing that includes the women's races as prominently as this one. 👍
The thumbnail shows the Women's podium at Vail - the winner Beth Heiden is also the overall Women's winner. Second would be Dutch 1979 World Champion Petra de Bruin. To bad there's no coverage in the video.
Great times:)!
46:38 .. woah
18:11 ..woah 24:05 Thomas Prehn 24:14 ..if Woody Allen raced bikes
27:10 woah 40:17 Emergency...Bob Carpenter needed NOW!
Connie's mullet! Lol! I miss the 80's.
Unbelievable! Really took me back to the golden days!!! Thank You
How cool! I was there the day of the race at Boulder park..I was nine years old and I remember standing next to Susan Saint James while she talked into a bullhorn to the crowd. My dads cousin, John Howard, had won the race the two years before. Thanks for this video, it brought back some memories!
I remember John Howard. He was born in Springfield, MO and I remember when he won the triathlon. He is a great competitor. He had to work hard on his swimming but was faster than everyone on the bike.
Love this movie

9:19 In the 1987 Coors Classic Year Book Hinault, as usual, offers his slant on things.
1986 was a great cycling year.
The Greatest!!!!!
Ah yes! 1980's Colorado...what a paradise it was. 2023 Colorado, not so much.
Indeed.
Never been there, but I will take your word for it. I am pretty sure everything gets better though in parallel to how big the government gets. Oh wait...
Thank you very much for posting these great videos!
Boulder was a lot smaller then. And you can't run a bike race on McCaslin Blvd anymore. And the spectators were a lot fitter.
