As a longtime cyclist, I haven't heard much of George Mount. Seems to be similar to Alexi Grewal. Thx for posting. 👍

Mount seemed like such an egotistical misfit. The way his coach spoke about him didn't help either, very negative. No wonder he disappeared. Kind of like Alexi Grewal. Didn't help that the US had almost no understanding of pro cycling. Still, thanks for posting this and this race looked pretty good for its time.

~ 9:18..... 'after 30 miles...' really? I realize this video is from the era when US cycling was typically 25 mile crits, but still.... 'after 30 miles ?????' Maybe after 200K, but 30 mils ? I don't think so.

I wonder if Mount was the basis for the 'American Flyers' character "Muzzin." In the movie he was a very abrasive, arrogant rider and later in the story he blows up at a reporter saying she wrote stories about boycotting the Olympics which ruined his shot at a medal.

Maybe. But Mount raced the '76 Olympics and got 6th, a superb result for Americans at the time.

Not true, a good one day rider does not necessarily make a good stage racer.

Whatever happened to this guy? Sure looks like Mr Ego here. If I recall correctly, the U.S.A. didn't go to those Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980, so what went on after that for Mount?

As I recall, George Mount did ride pro for some Italian team eventually, but he never accomplished much during his pro career. Funny, they focused all their attention on him, but he didn't even win the overall race, Dale Stetina did. And they didn't even mention that Greg LeMond was racing this race as a junior racer and finished 4th overall! You can see him on the left of the screen at 7:40-7:45 in his white Avocet jersey. Also, Greg LeMond ended up being the top cyclist at the Olympic trials in 1980 as a first year senior rider.

@@dogmanfitness2552Greg was so humble that the press didn’t know about his story, but his strength later gives it away.
