  • In this video I explain several approaches to Shoegaze style strumming using a tremolo bar. I explain my technique and what works for me, as well as what I see out of Kevin Shield's (My Bloody Valentine) technique.

      Yeah but only because of the mechanics of playing. People get so caught up in gear they forget that at the end of the day the sound is all that really matters! I've gotten a more accurate sound from a cheap Fender copy and some inexpensive plugins than a lot of people I've seen on RUclips with their Jazzmasters and keeley electronics pedals. I find that it's best to go into these things with the mindset of: that's a cool sound, but I wonder what that pedal is actually doing to the signal to make it sound that way, and if you understand that you can recreate almost any sound quite inexpensively. All too many people think they need to buy that shiny new pedal to get the sound they want, and it's like no, don't buy into that corporate bullshit, it's all smokes and mirrors. DIY is where it's at imo and is the very attitude of punk! xD

    Which amp or pedals should I get to replicate the sound your guitar makes? I love it!

    • @elgatonegro1703
      @elgatonegro1703 2 года назад +6

      There's tons of boutique pedals out there that are good for shoegaze, often made with that in mind, as well as the old faithfuls. I'd recommend a distortion, a fuzz, and a delay as the minimum, with good-to-haves being chorus, tremolo, reverb, compression, some kind of volume/wah/pitch-shifter and/or octave, and i guess some other distortion why not. Lots of good options out there for all of these categories.
      Everything from massive marshall stacks to fender supersonics have been used for shoegaze and shoegaze-adjacent stuff; imo it's more about getting the pedals to work for you and within the amp's abilities. But the vox ac30, or even 15, is a good choice...a benefit being that even if you decide to switch to a lot of other genres it'll still be one of the best choices.
      edit - the (v good) whammy bar style he's demonstrating in the video is doing a lot of the work in creating that sound i think you mean...it does take some time to figure out your own style for doing it, but it wouldn't be a terrible idea to just turn up your amp's gain and reverb and work on your own version of whammy bar strumming before you go buying a whole bunch of gear.

    • @fixedgear37
      @fixedgear37 4 месяца назад +1

      A cheap rat pedal and a delay. Use the reverb on the amp for now. You don’t need $10k in pedals to learn to play. Don’t listen to these guys, they obsess over gear.

      I've had one before with a really weird buzzing on the rhythm circuit. My current ones pickup selector sometimes doesnt work normally. It sound great and plays great, action is slightly high, but its still more than playable. Tinker around with one at a store instead of buying online. Cause squiers can have some quality control problems, but most I've played are pretty damn good. My squier affinity jaguar bass (which I compared with a bunch of fenders and squires at the store) somehow played better than anything else. Of course, I cant say that for every squier I've played, but you can always luck out and find something you'll keep forever.
