Oh yeah!
yes true

@@sorry4771 i love you

I dig your Freddie Kruger sweater.
I finally bought an electric guitar and left my acoustic just to play shoegaze
Omg the chords are making me ascend
Who would've thought, shaggy is a shoegazer
Haha
can you teach us more shoegaze chords and how to make shoegaze songs please?
We need all the maj7s
These chords are soooooo…*chef kiss*🙌🏽🙌🏽
Super underrated I will definitely recommend this to others and I will also use these cords. Thanks so much great tutorials.
Love the personality of this guy plus his music he likes
Thank youuuu.
For a first video this is really well done man :)
Beautiful. Thanks for this!!!
super helpful, man. keep bringing us those nice dreamy tones.
Thanks for this, I think I saw your first video years back! Love th shoegaze!
Hey guys, I recently released a new single with my project Unkenny Valleys. Feel free to give it a listen. I'd love to know what you think: ruclips.net/video/4RsqJp-kFtM/видео.html
I'm here because i
accidentally create intro by the XX and Catch The Breeze by Slowdive (main riff) for the 4th time this month... and it's boring
Good idea playing it all the way through at the start!
You just put Alan Mcgee and all the Creation engineers to shame! You could've hit the big time with those sweet sounds in the early 90's! Love the channel.
That's very nice of you. Haha. Thank you. :)
you re one good player, thanks!! more and more video please!!
Thank you man. Working on more stuff.
impecable..my bloody outro vibes..beauty
Thanks for the ideas bro and especially keeping it real and simple! Great Vid!
finally something I can understand, thanks for the vid
This is LOVE!
Good to hear that it shines through! :)
great job! Well done.
Thank you Bryson.
I like that sound :)
Hey! I liked it! Thanks!
Thanks for the like and for watching!
would a strat fit in the shoegaze sounding? i heard multiple opinions and still can't decide
The first guitarist in my band Downhil Willows played great shoegaze riffs with his Strat. The only issue is the whammy bar as it is shorter as the one of the Jaguar. So it's a little harder to make long and smooth bending sounds. But you can do it.
question. can you play this with strat tremolo? some people said that it's uncomfortable to play shoegaze with strat whammy bar
That is true. The strat tremolo is really tight and short so it's not easy to use for that purpose. But ine of my band members once handled it quite well.
can you play this in dropped tuning or does it have to be standard tuning?
Drop tunings would definitily work as well.
I’ve played stuff like this in Drop E and lower on my baritone jazzmaster. I think the super low tunings makes it sound more unique for this type of music
What kind of distortion pedal are you using, is this just reverb, distortion and tremolo arm?
Yes. Only reverb and a bit distortion plus whammy bar. I used a Blakemore Effects Deus Ex Machina Fuzz with 50% blended into the clean sound. Unfortunately the pedal is not continued and hard to find.
The link to part 2 is broken. This is the right one: ruclips.net/video/j3Mo8qm0m2M/видео.html
Great work
good, thanks for video
Great video! It does help a lot! Could you also show us how you do with the whammy bar to create that Kevin Shields-like swell sound. Much appreciated
Just gotta hang on to the bar when you strum
Nic George yep, trying to get used to it right now
I think you should really try to figure it out your own way, you know? The My Bloody Valentine riff are awesome but way too many people just do the same thing with it. Idk if a lesson would really be all that helpful :p
too funny...I'm glad I really liked jazz as a kid because all of them are used in this genre.
Great videos, really interesting chords but I'm a little confused about the context in which you can use these chords. Could I just substitute a regular G major or D major for Gmaj13 and Dmaj9? I know the theory stuff isn't what the channel is for but any help with resources that could explain this would be really great. Thanks! Keep up the good work.
You are basically changing the voicings in a type of way. You can if you want.
Short, simple, but useful
Awesome kid!!!! Thanks!!!! I play Fender Mustang Performer.
maj7 chords are my favorite for dreamyness
Back off on the crunch and a tad more sustain! You did very good! I'll look for the next video!
Those swells are so cool man - Very MBV
Oh yeah. I love it. Thank you!
Great, and easy, lesson. Thanks!
very good video and channel
Now this is cool and all, but how do i go about writing my own chords?
Good question. I also made some more videos like that where I explain how I create new chords from simple basic finger patterns.
thanks for the info, keep up the good work
2:38 That's not a D Major 9, that's just a D Major 7 chord since you're using the same exact voicings as you did for the other chords across the fretboard in various keys. 3:10 also, that's not a G Major 13, that's a G Major 7. I come from a Jazz background and we use extended chords all the time, and if you want to get a better understanding of 9th, 11th, and 13th chords, I would look up Jazz tutorials for guitar.
Thank you for this comment, Neville. I used a guitar chord app for the names. I suspect that the open E string, which always remains the same, is causing these minimal changes (9 or 13 instead of just 7) . Would I play the full barre chord in every fret position, the high E string would change it's note with that and I would have simple Major 7 chords. But by leaving the E string open some of the chord names are slightly changing to higher numbers. Comparing the sound of the D Major 9 chord in this video: ruclips.net/video/6ejmWsVmWmM/видео.html with the D Major 9 chord in my video, it sounds the same. I only use a open tuning.
@@berlinshoegazer Nope. Trust me, two different voicings that sound similar but not the same. On a piano, you could get away with your method of playing a Maj 9th simply because you have more fingers to play more notes across the piano keys the way they are laid out, so its easier to stack major or minor 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 7ths, and so on. With guitar however, this isn't the case, and with the chord that you played in particular, the D Maj7, the individual notes for the guitar are D A C# and E.
While yes, in the video you linked me to which was in fact a D Maj9 chord, what you were playing in your video was a D Maj7 with two E notes in two octaves instead of the major third of an actual D Maj9 which would be F# that. See, the standard voicing for a D Maj7 that you played already has an E in it which is on your 2nd (B) string, 5th fret. You letting your high E on your first string ring out doesn't make a difference in terms of making it a 9th chord because the E on the 2nd string is already there and being played.
You were playing D A C# E E while the video you linked me to was playing an actual D Maj9 chord which would have the individual notes of D F# C# E. On piano, you don't change the major third if you want to play a 9th chord but with the basic and most common voicing on guitar, you do. I see what you were trying to do and technically speaking, you weren't wrong. If you played a D Maj7 on piano which is D F# A C#, and then wanted to play a D Maj9, all you would have to do is add an E (D F# A C# E makes a basic Maj9 on piano) which is of course is the 9th interval of the major triad.
I hope that I was able to explain that without sounding too complicated as theory can be overwhelming.
@@Pric3less1 Allright. Thank you for that!
Neville Allen II , d maj 7 notes are d, f#, a, and c#, the E would be the ninth in the d major scale making in a nine chord. You are wrong
Neville Allen II 2nd string he’s definitely playing the 7th fret which would be F# and not E. And even if he was playing the E on the 5th fret that’s not a different octave than the high E string it’s the exact same note and it would technically be a Dmaj7sus2 since you’re omitting the 3rd
you actually kind of resemble kevin shields
Haha. I wanted to look like a shoegazer back then. Thanks for the compliment.
Alison?
It seems that you are using the vibrato to balance out the distortion that seemed unnecessary at the start of the video.
Regardless, thanks for sharing… keep it up 👍
I wanted to play in the typical shoegaze style which is a little reverb into distortion using the vibratio. These chords work grate for that style. During that time when I recorded the video - almost nobody seem to make content about this. I understand that some viewers are a little confused by that as they may expect just new chords without any effects. Thank you for the nice words.
@@berlinshoegazer Thank you for your nice playing… Keep up the good work and God bless.

Hi! I just discovered your channel!
I have a few questions for you:
1) Which guitar do you consider is the best for shoegaze/dream pop: Squier VM Jaguar or Jazzmaster (considering both guitars with stock pickups) ?
2) Can the VM Jaguar sound like a VM Jazzmaster? and vice versa?
Greetings from México!
Buzz In Lazerbeam u r talking about rex from tamaryn, right?! He fucking rules
I play a Schecter.... I don't know why....
I played a lot of different Fender guitars while jamming with other musicians. I think most Jazzmasters are sounding thicker and kind of stable while the Jaguars I played where a bit more surfy and thin, sometimes even a bit plastic sounding like what was very cool with fuzz ... but I think you have to go in a store and play some guitars by yourself to find something you like. I just play a Jaguar because I knew it would sound very thin. But Actually i love Gibson L6, Gibson Thunderbird and Gibson SG as well...
WHAT PICKUPS R THEY, i want to replave the single bucker on my standard series squier tele
Those look like the Duncan Designed stock pickups from the Squier Vintage Modified series.
@@olderebelam-o Those are indeed the Duncan Designed stock pickups from the SVM series. Thank you, Adonai.
@@berlinshoegazer WOW!
i love your work!!
What scale would you use for soloing over this?
Lucky Cat Jazz is always the best way to go man
A major mode would do the trick
just play dissonant crazy notes of a major scale and its shoegaze enough
Use major seventh chord tones, so AMaj7 would use A(1) C#(3) E(5) and G#(7).
Major pentatonic would be kinda ok but the 6th note would create a slight clash against the 7th note.
To add some dreamy colour, use the Lydian mode, especially that glorious #11 tone (this would be a D# over the Amaj7 chord).
You could also highlight the 9th note (B over the Amaj7) high up the fretboard.
As this chord progression changes through MANY keys or uses modal interchange, probably best to play a riff then slide it up to match next chord in the progression. So play an Amaj7 riff on 5th fret then shift up to 7th fret over the Cmaj7.
I don't think all the chords should be maj7, especially the E...better off playing as E7 instead.
Avoid using whammy too much and let reverb and echo do the work. Can add some distortion to add blurry sound to increase shoegaze effect
nice! what is that pitch bend effect ure using?
It's only my whammy bar that I use.
@@berlinshoegazer thank you so much! unfortunately, my fender duo sonic doesnt have one :(
@@Sally-ep1eh you could get yourself a Pitchfork by EHX and set it to semi notes on 100% blend. That should do the trick. You could use a seperate expression pedal for the bending or you can set up the Pitchfork footswitch for it. Or you can by a Digitech Whammy pedal wich is pretty huge.
The music kinda reminds of the silent hill ambients
Sounds fucking gorgeous ❤️
Know where I can get that Sweater? Looks badass!
Thx man. I got it used online.
Hey, what program are you using to print out those guitar chord charts?
Adobe Photoshop. I make them by myself.

Thanks! Gotta check 'em out. I rec you Nothing in return if u have not heard that one. :)
How did you get this specific sound? It sounds amazing :0
sounds like chorus, reverb and a little bit of distortion
Can you show how to set boss dd-7 in reverse mode and sound like that? My reverb dont have reverse mode, but dd-7 has.
Hey Nikita sorry but it think that would have a different effect maybe try setting the delay to a really fast slap back so set the time really fast might act like a reverb, but honestly go for a digitech polara for its reverse if you have a bit more money the cathedral by ehx is better for reverse as it a mode for dry so you can still hear your guitars original signal and get the reverse effect in the back round really nice hope this helps
he actually uses reverse reverb not delay i think he uses an old digitech pedal
@@leavemealone5141 that is correct! RV7 by Hardwire or Digitech. Polara by Digitech would work as well. Or you get a Zoom MS50g or Zoom MS70CDR. They all are very affordable.

What key is this in?
I'm not so experienced with music theory. I guess it not just one key. It's just a finger position that works in different fret positions with open strings.
He is playing in A major, but there are lots of moveable chord shapes in this video
Are you playing with no fuzz ?
Hey James, I played a Blakemore Effects Deus Ex Machina Fuzz in this video. It has a blend knob and can sound very soft.
Shields is that you?
No. It's Estrada y Santiago. :P

It's just the standart staytrem. It's buzzing most of the time, but I think it's kind of tasty. :)

hey vincent. yeah, it's a custom finish. the stock ones are not that interesting in my opinion. would like to the result of your jag after painting it.
yeah, i have the candy apple red jaguar…(I'm not a fan of red guitars, but the surf green is horrendous imo) i love the white pick guard but not the red. did you paint yours yourself or what?
no, i bought it second hand from another guitar player who played a black one with a white finish.
What is that song at the end @SHOEGAZER??
It's a song I'm still working on. You'll fin it here, when it's finished: www.kennethestradaysantiago.bandcamp.com

The detune is from the whammy bar usage. It's on purpose. That's how shoegaze is generally performed (listen to the album Loveless by My Bloody Valentine)
hey do you like diiv?
Not too much. But I think they do cool stuff.

What exatcly do you mean by that? I do not cover all six strings playing them. Some strings are left open.
thats a lot of reverb lol
a looooot of reverb
Real shogaze
maybe more fuzz or dist.
You can put as much reverb on your chords as you like. I didn't use reverb in this video to demonstrate that dreaminess is in the chords itself. The rest is up to your personal taste.
@@Ariel-qn5wc Not every shoegaze tune uses fuzz or distortion. I only used reverse reverb and e blend fuzz in the beginning. the rest is about explaining the chords.
How does someone pick up a guitar then get all their equipment, learn to play, and then choose to play that?
Good question. :D But not relevant for this video.
How does someone become such a snob?
***** its a joke lol. Everyone has their own thing they like to play and their own tastes. To each their own
@shoegazer Hey! I like your channel. I only meant to defend you because @sshimon's comment sounded like he was being mean about the way you played guitar, and he sounded snobby, as if you didn't know how to use your equipment. I really liked what you were doing. Sorry for any misunderstanding, peace
+Nebworth I'm sorry, didn't see the right order of messages here. Sometimes it's getting really confusing. Everythings fine. Very happy you like the channel. I promise there will be coming more useful videos. :D
Your guitar sounds out of tune
Sorry
SHOEGAZER Probably just because of what you’re doing with the whammy bar. I would suggest applying a little less pressure on it. Other than that nice job 👍
I was just about to say it's the use of the tremolo bar. I know Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine screws his bar in ever so slightly so you can't actually push down on it and it doesn't drop the note too low to where it becomes wonky but just enough that he gets his classic glide guitar sound.
That’s the whole aesthetic
That’s what it’s meant to sound like
Am I the only one that thinks this sounds terrible?!!
haha. that's what shoegaze is all about.
REALLY!!!! Ok each to their own!!!

sorry, but your chord names are way wrong. they're all over the place. certainly you're right when you say you're not much of a theory nerd, I guess... no offense or anything, just kinda smacking my head and saying .. uhh, whaa?? when looking at your chord chart there.
maybe you could help here. What would be the right names?
sure, I'll give it a shot, give me a few minutes to work it out. ohhh.. my bad, I might actually be wrong now that I'm having a look again, haha. my LCD screen is really bright and I didn't see the fret position numbers at the top of your chord chart. I thought these were all at the nut. it makes a lot more sense now that I see the fret numbers. apologies, mate. but um.. still, looking at this, so far you've got Amaj7, Cmaj7, but that Dmaj9.. I'm not sure if you'd call that Dmaj7add9? does a 9th chord imply the major 7th necessarily? and for the Gmajor13, that DOES imply the 9th which isn't in your chord, so I'd definitely call that something like Gmaj7add13. those would be my only suggestions now that I can actually see, haha. but that might be an idea in itself--maybe change the colors because the grey on white is kinda hard to see.
Dmaj9 implies the major 7. If it was just the 9, it'd be Dadd9, no?
yeah, you are right.
13th and 9th chords imply the 7ths, but a 13th chord doesn't necessarily imply the 9th. Gma7add13 isn't one I've come across, but I've seen Gma7/13. Generally there is no standard when it comes to these names and while it is nice to have a name which absolutely specifies every single tone in a chord it defeats one of the purposes of the chord symbols which is as a shorthand system for improvisation - if I saw Gma13 on a lead sheet I'd understand that I should play the 3, 7 & 13 with all the other notes being optional - probably wouldn't included the 11(4) in a chord with a major 3rd - it can be interesting but it tends to create a more tense sounds than ma6, ma7, ma9, m13
