Worth noting the Jazzmaster/Jaguar vibrato bar is MUCH longer than a standard whammy bar, which is why whammy strumming is easier on those models or just with that system.

  • @JayTheEnn

If you don't have a whammy bar on your guitar you can play the chord you are playing one semitone lower and bend it for a similar effect.

I saw them live in 91 or 92 in San Francisco and I've been hooked ever since. Shields used a couple of Marshal Guv"nor pedals and at least 3 or 4 Roger Mayer Rocket ship Fuzz pedals into a Marshall Half=Stack...in Fact the entire band used the same rigs. So it was a wall of Marshalls! They nailed Loveless!!! They really nailed the sound of all of their records live...to see their show was such a visceral EXP!!! Especially the 20 minute (at least it felt like that long!) Noise break in the middle of their set! Great stuff, all of it!!

I almost have to play on the neck to have enough distance from the stings to play chords. I don't want to bend it however, I might have to (after I take it off) to play correctly. Some Slowdive synth tones are the “Soft Focus” patch on a Yamaha FX500 running into either a Fender Twin or a JC-120.
Think “Catch The Breeze” and “Machine Gun”
If there’s a synth string tone on a Slowdive record, it’s most likely that.

I actually used a Digitech Whammy before I used a real whammy bar. I always wanted to use less equipment so I got myself the Jaguar and sold my Les Paul and the Whammy by DigiTech back then. But it works great and sounds really cool.

Cool video, but I think you may mislead people into thinking that that specific part of the song has reverse delay. I thought that as well but now that I'm currently in the process of dissecting that mix so that I can recreate it (which means a shit ton of research) I realized that the only place I hear reverse reverb being applied is in the outro. Otherwise, this song has almost no reverb or delay in any track whatsoever (not on vocals, not on guitars and not even on drums). Here's the fx chain that I've gathered so far:
rhythm guitars- heavy compression, maybe a bit of overdrive in the chorus and maybe a bit of chorus (or maybe just tape wow and flutter). They're played pretty much like you're playing in the first example (good job on that!)
lead guitars- same as rhythm, but maybe a bit more overdrive and played through two amps facing each other with tremolos set to different speeds (though Kevin states that while using the tremolo in the amps, he hears a bit of reverb coming in as well so if you're using pedals you might want to take that into account).
Also here's the other instruments for anyone who might me curious :P
synths- Kevin sampled the lead guitars and played them one normal the other one an octave higher. Not only that but this time the main melody was played backwards to the lead guitars.
bass- overdrive, distortion or straight up fuzz in the chorus, but fairly clean in the verses. No compression used, but that bass was unusually consistent all across the neck (they spent a good amount of time choosing the perfect bass), so one to recreate the effect might need to use a bit of it.
drums- pretty dry and direct sound. Possibly no room mics or external reverb used. Heavy use of parallel compression so that it cuts through in the mix and I'm hearing a bit of sidechaining in the guitars in the chorus (thought it might just be the use of the tremolo bar combined with some tape saturation in the mixing stage)
vocals- upwards to 10 takes tracked with no compression. Maybe heavy use of compression later in mixing (I haven't gotten to that part yet hahaha)
    That's it. Cheers!

I have classic player Jag, the tremelo plate is closer to the bridge than the traditional Jags, I find it to be really hard to do glide on that guitar and the tremolo is screw in type, so much friction and the whammy bar slope is really parallel to the body like it was designed to do the tremolo traditionally style (strat likewise)
So i’m looking into Squier VM jag, does the stock tremolo work well for gliding guitar? Or it need modifies I’ve been ur fan and I’ve heard you modified your tremolo system.

@@rockguitarist931 hey if you don't have the whammy yet, check out the EHX slammi! some digitech whammies require weird power cables, and the slammi has a blend knob (dry signal/pitchshifted signal) which can give you sort of an "ensemble" effect. you can also use a sort of "push/pull" feature on the slammi where you can make the pedal bend both ways. another upside of the slammi is that it's both cheaper and smaller than the whammy. lmk if this helped!

    • @rockguitarist931
      @rockguitarist931 3 года назад

@@sanctummm3950 I have tried both the Whammy and Pitchfork since commenting on this video, and they just aren't good imitations of a whammy bar (in my opinion). I am buying a J Mascis Jazzmaster later this summer because it is the only guitar I've found with a whammy bar that is worth what it costs. I figure that, a reverb pedal, and a blues driver will get me relatively close to the heavy shoegaze sounds I want to make. Then I can evolve and improve my rig from there.
