  • J Mascis, lead guitarist and singer of the seminal group Dinosaur Jr., came by the Reverb studio to discuss his methodology when it comes to fuzz and drive pedals. Dinosaur Jr. is a group that made a name for itself through an impressive wall of distorted guitars and J Mascis discusses how he stacks his fuzz pedals and drive pedals to build his highly saturated tone. TheAaron3dg Too bad that he doesn't understand that distortion compresses the signal and reduces dynamics, regardless of the output level.

    • @aramil444
      @aramil444 7 лет назад +79

      You're talking about the dynamics in playing (hitting a note soft and hard). This is about tone dynamics, so having a sound that is louder or softer than another sound. That's also dynamics.

    • @TheDanD
      @TheDanD 7 лет назад +5

      David Uijterlinde Aaaaah, That makes absolutely no sense.

    • @aramil444
      @aramil444 7 лет назад +41

      Well, dynamics is a quite broad concept. Technicall it's about difference in volume. While you are absolutely correct that your sound gets compressed when a fuzz (or any drive/distortion for that matter) is activated and therefore the dynamic range of that particular sound is reduced, I suspect that J Mascis is talking about overall dynamics, so having one sound (one pedal) being louder than another sound (another pedal or combination of pedals). So that's also differences in volume and therefore also dynamics. Does this make more sense?

    • @TheDanD
      @TheDanD 7 лет назад

      David Uijterlinde Yes, but that's because you just described the standard definition for 'dynamics'. It's not really a broad concept, and, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about because you've clearly just described the thing perfectly, but it's just that, changes in volume, not tone.

    The thing to take from these videos is that these guys are professional touring musicians, so they know how to use their gear to get real world tones live, not bedroom sounds. Anyone who plays live knows that the sounds you get at home or at rehearsals can be night and day to how you may want to sound live. The big muff and muff styles pedals, are famously scooped and get lost in the mix, his point on allowing that pedal the greatest threshold in your signal change is invaluable to giving it presence in a live mix. A lot of players set everything to stun hoping it'll help them cut or sound bigger but it just crushes their presence. This is a good lesson on how to use fuzz live and sound epic

    Genuinely good advice for people new to pedals and distortion. I remember when I was first trying to play in a style of going from clean to fuzz, and finding the transition between the two to just not work at all. Turning on the fuzz feels like it actually sucks all the energy out and takes down the volume cause youre losing a lot of the frequencies you have in the clean sound. Going from mild overdrive to fuzz is definitely a smoother transition.

    • @themeltdownz8901

      @@themeltdownz8901 There are no hard rules but if you want to go from a light overdrive to a heavy fuzz then you will have an easier time with the overdrive before the fuzz in your signal path. I saw Dinosaur Jr. many times in the 80's, in London especially. The Fulham Greyhound really sticks out as one of the best! I saw Dinosaur in Glasgow a few nights before and decided to head to London for their next gig, so me and a mate came all the way from Glasgow, with no tickets, and the venue was completely sold out with a massive crowd outside trying to get in the locked doors. There was just no way we were getting in that way! So we went in to a pub up the road, phoned the venue and asked to speak to Dinosaurs manager, and amazingly enough they put her on, we bullshitted her that we'd met J at the Glasgow gig and he'd told us to come down to London and he'd put us on the Greyhound guest list, and she bought it! Next thing we know we're at the back of this huge crowd when the door opens slightly and a bouncer shouts our names out. It was like the parting of the Red Sea as we both shoved our way through this crowd and were dragged bodily into the venue just in time for the band hitting the stage for one of the best gigs ever!
    Nothing ventured.....

I got a few of their gigs, and a number of Butthole Surfers gigs, Meat Puppets, fIREHOSE, Swans, Big Black, Sonic Youth, Camper Van Beethoven, World Domination Enterprises and many more! The 80’s was a gold mine of great live bands.
      By the time the 90’s arrived I was taken up by Acid House and Techno, started DJing and didn’t see as many bands as I used to as I was so busy putting on all nighters or DJing at raves and clubs!

In one I watched he talked about how he hated drugs and couldn’t fully relate to the druggie punk scene until bands like Minor Threat came along.

    There's one pedal not mentioned in the gear he used on this video, the Red one with knob bumpers is a Hovercraft Ionostrofear Fuzz v2.5. The new version is almost Neon Green with a white strip in the center where the model name script goes. A Cool distortion/ OD/ Fuzz/ Boost pedal for sure.

    I love using my Russian Tank Big Muff run through my Boost-wah pedal (running into my C50 2x12 on the dirty channel) and using the wah effect to pitch-shift and set various stacked fuzz tones. Gives me a LOT of range in terms of fuzz tones plus I can disengage either the boost or the big muff and get even more tones.

  • @fkorekore265

    For all Big Muff geeks, there's an interesting explanation by Billy Corgan ( don't like this guy but that sound was CRAZY, there's an isolated guitar track here on Ytb proving it): " I had all sorts of theories of how to best use this pedal, including the idea that it only sounded its 'best' when used with a battery." "When we did Siamese Dream I developed a technique of plugging my Big Muff pedal into the low sensitivity input of a 100 watt Marshall JCM 800, with the master volume on full and the preamp volume on barely at all (treble at 3-4)." "The sound of the combo of the Bat Strat ('57 Strat reissue with Lace Sensor pickups), the Big Muff, and the Soul head with Mars cabinet (Marshall JCM 800 100w head and cab) is still unmistakable..." "I would say that 98% of all guitar parts on the first two albums were done thru this amp/speaker combo. In order to change the sound, the Stratocaster parts would be recorded through a shure 57 on the bottom right speaker, and the Les Paul parts would be recorded through a Sennheiser 421 on the top left speaker.
