  • 4K UHD Blu-ray review of the 2022 Finnish action movie. Violent, gory and quite a bit of bad language. Aspect ratio approximately 2.40:1 and sound is Dolby Digital 5.1 even though the box states DTS 5.1.

Big thanks from a Finnish subscriber for this review! I saw Sisu in the theatre and I agree with your review of the film itself. It was fun, inventive and often very good-looking, especially for its budget. A nice little nostalgic action piece that should not be taken too seriously.

And it's a good lesson to the film industry in general Kalle because I don't suppose either America or Britain would be able to produce a film like this for so small an investment. Pobably not many countries could. What a landscape though. This might be the most many of us have seen of Finland.

I don't know how a film like this could be followed up unless it's a completely different cast with an all new story. After all, SISU isn't the name of the main character so it merely requires another indomitable hero to play a similar part.

I really enjoyed this film. It looks bigger than the budget might suggest. In fact, given it's budget, and say, that of the effects-heavy Godzilla Minus One, I'm quite shocked that Hollywood doesn't bring many widely-released movies for less than $100 million.

Hi John, I am glad you picked up Sisu. I really enjoyed it at the cinema (what is not to like about Nazi getting their comeuppance) and agree with your take about it being a call back to 90's action films. Speaking of which. I saw The BeeKeeper this week. Whilst not brilliant it is another call back to the 90's (actually more 80's really) action film with Jason Statham playing an Arnie/Stallone type character from those 80's films. As I said, not brilliant but still very enjoyable. Made especially so as I had experienced a hack myself that week (will tell you about it) so found the downfall of the villains in the Beekeeper very cathartic lol

Thank you for mentioning SISU John because until you and a couple of others pointed it out on the shelves of the Bristol HMV, I hadn't paid it any attention at all. This review won't be very popular but I rather enjoy covering the more obscure films on occasion. The Arrow Films 4K of Carrie arrived today and it's a nice pack for £30 considering a lot of standard releases are initially £25.
I hope you've got this hacking business sorted out now.
And I'll take a look for The Beekeeper now that you've suggested that one.

I have a question though but not about visual but film related....I just did a stream about laurel and hardy and my friend has bought at expense bluray versions of the shorts. I notice on my dvds that thse films are now preserved and have been transfered tocsafety film. What is safety film ? And does that mean all transfers will be from these safety film versions ? Hope you can answer that. Excelsior

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +1

Up until some time in the 1950's the film stocks (and negative film stocks) used were nitrate. This was extremely flammable and hence when Kodak developed acetate film that simply melted rather than catch fire it was called' safety film'. Today just about every film stock is polyester which is thinner than acetate but almost indestructible by comparison. What this all means is that probably all the Laurel & Hardy negatives were on nitrate but as a result of that they have by now had duplicate negatives struck onto 'safety stock'. John.

SISU isn't exactly a great film but it's great fun. The Finnish landscape sets a very cinematic scene and despite being a low budget movie shot entirely on video, it doesn't feel like it to me. The disc only cost me £15 which is incredible when you consider that 30 years ago to get quality anything like this for the home was hundreds of pounds. This would have been almost £300 so put the inflation onto that and £15 is a bargain. John.

I enjoyed Sisu. The digital version has Atmos and it’s annoying that it’s not on the disc versions.
As for Point Break it’s always been a guilty pleasure of mine, I absolutely love that film and I recently got the 4k Steelbook imported. Unfortunately it arrives damaged but it is now unavailable so I won’t be sending it back. I haven’t managed to watch it yet but I stuck the disc in to watch a a few scenes that I know well and overall I think it’s a satisfactory upgrade from the Blu Ray which was always of fairly poor quality. No new extras which is disappointing though.
Once upon a time in Hollywood is fantastic…it gets better with more viewings. Dicaprio and Pitt are terrific in it! Speaking of Di Caprio, have you seen Killers of the Flower moon yet? I know your not really a streamer but it’s on Apple TV and I though it was amazing. I’m hoping for an extra special UK Physical release but I’m not confident it’ll happen however it is available on Amazon Italy and I’ve just ordered it! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Evening Tom. Apparently the Blu-ray in Finland comes with Dolby Atmos so it's all rather odd but presumably a licencing issue or an attempt to sell more streams so the studio can keep all the money and cut out the middle man.
The Point Break 4K is very good. I'm not told it was done from the interpositive which is the next generation down from the negative. No wonder it looks so good. Terrible shame about your steelbook being damaged. That's the trouble with getting these things in the post.
I haven't seen Killers of the Flower Moon. I have to admit that the trailer put me off it. But I expect I'll be unable to resist the 4K when it's out. Without having good quality in cinemas any longer (with a few exceptions) there seems little point in going to all the trouble when most of the movies now look better here at home. That could change though if the industry does start to take advantage of the 70mm resurgence. Even the DUNE sequel is getting blow-up prints from the 4K video master file so they're hoping to entice people into cinemas who pretty much gave up years ago... like myself.
I only tend to watch extra features for favourite films or if I'm doing a review video. The rest of the time I find that I use my time better by putting another film on. And speaking of which, tonight I'll be watching the new 4K of CARRIE. Well, that's the plan anyway.

I doubt we’ll see a Killers of the Flower Moon release over here. Certainly not in 4k unless Scorsese somehow negotiated as Apple TV have never released a 4k physical as far as I know. I wish they would especially with Masters of the Air out now!
There’s only ever been a Criterion blu ray release for the Irishman too which is disappointing.
I agree with you on the cinema quality now, I can have far better visual and Audio at home with my modest Atmos set up and 4k blu ray.

Sisu is one I wanted to see after seeing the trailer but again have not yet been able to. I still have The Proposition to watch but have been busy with things and I really want to sit and watch it, so I’m making sure of a right time to take it in.
I’m looking forwards to your comments on Point Break, I actually had the previous blu ray of it which didn’t have the best transfer (one of those over-digitally smoothed transfers), and when I saw there was the 4k getting released stateside with no sign of it here, I made sure to add it to a list of 4k’s I would seek out as I was going to be over there. Wish I’d also known the same company would release Quigley Down Under and JFK.
I think they completely mastered both the 4k and the blu ray in the pack from the same interngative source, creating a completely new blu ray transfer instead of just reusing the old released version. I’m curious to hear your views on it, the blu ray versions never really compare to the 4k, especially in darkened scenes.. it’s just an annoying shame they had to region code the blu ray. Andrew

Morning Andrew. I've been thinking about what to do about a multizone player. I have long been looking at the Panny 820 but they seem to be discontinued now. At £450 I had to stop myself from investing in one but I'll get something similar eventually. I don't know why my Zone A Blu-ray drive has packed up but I may find a way to resurrect it. Doing a review without seeing the extras and comparing the 4K to the Blu-ray would be little lacking in information so it's going to have to wait a while. If that Zone A drive hadn't have packed up I'd have been uploading the Point Break review yesterday instead of SISU but that's life. That wasn't shot in IMAX Richard so that's all a bit of marketing propaganda. I think I have seen that concert but obviously the HD video will be better than what I would have seen years ago. I do wish IMAX would use different names for these faux IMAX cinemas and screenings because it's not doing the great name any favours. The BFI IMAX is getting a 15/70 blow up print of the DUNE sequel so while that won't be a genuine 15/70 print it should be interesting to see how well the 4K video blows up onto the biggest film frames with a quality difference of around 15 times. I feel another London trip coming on.

@@moviecollector5920 I'm certainly not an expert or "in the know" about these things but I have heard a few interviews of people who mix DVD soundtracks for a living & they seem to say many producers don't consider the DVD sound mix to be important as the vast majority of consumers won't care about it as most just watch on a TV or maybe a soundbar. Apparently they often get given a track to do with very little time or budget before the release date considering how much time & money goes elsewhere. You can definitely get great sound out of a 5.1 tack though, as long as it's been mixed well anyway 😄

This is home video though so it's not like we're paying hundreds of pounds for a movie which is what it used to cost to get the best available home movie quality so I try not to let any issues that come up bother me too much.
