I find it irritating that we now have a new version when I already bought the former version. Begs the question: why wasn't the transfer "done right" the first time? I don't think I'll be "upgrading."

There's absolutely no difference. It's the same transfer. This new Steelbook has Dolby Vision, however there is no difference with original HDR 10 4k version. If a person has a non OLED TV the Dolby Vision will benefit your picture. If you have a OLED you'll see absolutely no difference.
