I saw in IMAX and Nolan wasn't joking when he said "Don't try to understand it just feel it". The dialogue was hard to understand in some scenes but honestly between the soundtrack, sound effects, and visuals it makes up for it. My wife said I had the biggest grin on my face the entire second half. It was the best movie experience I've ever had!
Go see more films! 😂

"We live in a physical world. There are no friends at Netflix."
I like this. Although to be honest, Netflix still supports physical media a bit.
Haha!!
No Netflix. No the Irishman. No criterion blu ray.
@@FastEddie86 the irishman is good. But I can live without it.
Good one 😂😂
"Is the audio fixed?"
My neighbors didn't think so. And they're about 6 miles away. I also need to replace all windows in my house since watching it.
Why?
Watched it last nigh. New Year’s Eve. Yes, broken windows and cracked plaster, and ear to ear grins on our faces !
It's not broken.
I was able to fix the audio issue, did take alot of work by remastering the entire track to a 7.1 hra and it does makes a difference for people with budget speakers or tv speakers
At my age I routinely watch movies with subtitles on. Being able to understand what is being said isn't a distraction to me, it adds to my enjoyment.
Dude, in Interstellar when Coop is going the worm hole, my subwoofer was vibrating so hard if you had a glass of water on it it would tipped over. I thought it was going to break.
I watched some Ludwig Göransson interviews on youtube about making the score for this movie. When he went to Nolan's house to play him some of the pieces made so far for feedback, Nolan turned the volume "up to 11" and the whole house was shaking. His volume mixing issues start to make more sense now.
Great review!
Is Nolan suffering from hearing loss? You would think an director of his stature would be able to hear things at lower volumes, not earth shattering volumes. Those kinds of things affects badly if the background music in a visual production overpowers the actors dialogue in the film.
I saw this in IMAX 70mm film in Indianapolis four times. The visuals and the music are out of this world epic
I didn’t mind the music drowning out the dialogue cause the music was SO FRIGGIN GOOD. I was was bobbing my head in the theater not even caring what the characters were saying 😂
Big facts
Atleast at home we can turn on subtitles now
Lol!! Nice!!
"We live in a twilight world. There are no friends at dusk."
Twilight WHHORLD
HENCE the casting of Robert Pattinson 🤯
I personally liked Tenet a lot even in theaters on the imax with the muddled sound. Sad to hear the issues weren’t fixed
COVID made the similar circumstances around the Dark Knight Rises impossible. People in early/test screenings complained so much about Bane being impossible to hear that Nolan was forced to fix it. I think he over corrected and his voice sounds weirdly too loud and clear in the mix. Who knows what could have been if there were comments from test screenings of TENET.
Unacceptable from a filmmaker of his pedigree. Loved the movie otherwise.
I mean what did you expect it’s Nolan lol
@@AaronMont, well actually, tbh I have come to expect this from Nolan.
That said, I still don’t like it and wish he would rethink it personally.
@@brucecarter6205 amen. How can I guy of his talent and creativity command a movie and mix the sound which is fantastic and bombastic but........................you can’t here the dialogue. Really! Nolan operates on a different level than most filmmakers but to purposefully muddle the dialogue is an infantile mistake.
Everything I've read or heard says the dialogue is hard to make out :( And yes, these audio choices are intentional. Nolan has stated this several times for several of his films-even some other directors were like, "you might want to reconsider the audio for Tenet..." I personally didn't have too much issue even on first viewing during Interstellar or TDKR, but I can see why some folks would.
My bigger concern is how loud the action scenes get. In this and every other review people have said this is a LOUD audio mix and I live in a town house... Well, hopefully my neighbors don't call the cops when I finally get to see this movie next week lol
Also, I know I am dreaming, but I really, really hope they do a limited theatrical re-release next summer since this movie didn't get the viewing it deserved due to Covid. My brother and I have have gone to the midnight IMAX premiere of all of his movies since TDKR and we planned to for this movie for sure, but we couldn't this time around. Whether you like Nolan or not, it's undeniable that he is one of the few working directors who makes blockbuster "event films" where it's basically a must see in theaters experience, so it's really sad to see this movie not get the theatrical treatment it deserved in most areas.
Couldn’t agree more. Nolan himself said that Tenet was going to be in the theaters for a long time due to the pandemic, and he encouraged everyone who wanted to go see it do so at a time when they felt most comfortable. But still, this movie was robbed of the numbers that it could’ve garnered, had it been released under better circumstances. I would also definitely love to see this film again in theaters. Definitely an unforgettable experience when I saw it
I found your channel less then a week ago and I'm already auto watching your uploads.
Great review
Thanks and welcome aboard!
I saw this in a real IMAX theater in Colorado. It was incredible.
Agreed! My friend and I were the only ones in the theatre too. I was completely immersed
I agree, BHG.
Good idea to stay away from all the fake IMAX theaters in Colorado....
@@brodysdaddy if you didn't know, there are imax screens that are barely a few feet taller than traditional movie screens, but with the full imax sound system. Many people differentiate these smaller screens from the ~97 foot "real/true" IMAX
I was fortunate to see this in a real IMAX in New Jersey, absolutely loved it!
It was amazing.
Which one did you go to? I know the one in the mall close to the airport in Newark. But I am pretty sure that it is not a proper IMAX.
I remember watching Interstellar in RPX thats a few feet bigger then imax screen best time of my life
@@micdoses1 What I don't like about the lie-MAX and RPX screens is that there is an extra charge although most of these screens are definitely large but nothing out of the ordinary. Case in point: My local theater has a 67 foot wide screen (30 feet high) which is about the size of (or larger than) most of the Lie-MAX or RPX screens but there is no additional charge for that. And that is true for all of these big screens where I live. Bottom line, I think the extra charge is just a scam unless it is a real IMAX screen (90 feet wide and equivalent height)
I didn't get to see this in theater either because of Covid-19 but from everyone I talked too that saw it your review is 100% spot on. The two big takes are that you will probably leave your first viewing wondering what the heck is going on and the fact you literally can not understand what is said most of the time just adds to your confusion of what is going on. Most of the people I talked to said you will want to watch it with close captioning on. For sure on a 2nd viewing.
Been waiting for this video all year🙌🏽Thank you for this 🔥
I was fortunate enough to see Tenet in IMAX and thoroughly enjoyed it. A terrific high-concept action thriller, beautifully constructed by Nolan and his team.
As to the switching of aspect ratios; I even noted it at the cinema, but it is a stylistic choice that I respect from a filmmaker of Christopher Nolan's caliber. I feel the same with the sound 'issues'. I can remember a short sequence - I think at the airport - where dialogue is quite intentionally drowned out. This was clearly designed to make the viewer (listener?) work at trying to hear exactly what was going on. Just another level of frustration designed to make the experience even more confusing and immersive.
I hope that the disc (out Monday in the UK) isn't quite as muddy as you suggest and that my system can cope. I guess we'll see. Have seen? Might see in the past? 🤔
Whatever happens, a great review as always. Keep up the great work 👍👌🖖
Saw this movie in theaters. I thought it was a great thoroughly well weaved story. I wasn't confused by it like most people. I think it's Nolan's best movie. I did have any audio problems with the movie when i saw it in theaters. I do not know what these people are complaining about. Definitely going to buy this movie.
"We live in a quarantined world, there is no end at dusk"
Dude dont say sh** like that🤦
I'm glad you mentioned about dialogue because I've noticed when I listening to my Blu-ray films the dialogue is not clear, I always thought it was my system, but it's not I was told by someone it is the way they mix the DVD films. because I've got a good surround sound system and i notice when I'm watching my DVDs films some parts of the films I can't hear the dialogue properly! It gets me so annoyed because I miss out on the film of understanding the story line.
I saw it in Dolby Cinema and there was more clarity. There were still a few conversations but less than the IMAX in comparison according to friends. Closed captions are a must!
Great review. I saw this movie in the theater in xd and the audio was still difficult to make out especially in the beginning. There were Twitter comments on Noland Twitter from other directors mentioning about the audio mixing. When I get it I plan on using subtitles. I loved this movie and it is definitely a 2nd or third watch
I can boost the center channel or use subtitles if I have to, but it's a day one buy for me. Not too happy about the stacking discs, but I'll do what you did. Thanks, very helpful review!
I watched this movie on a soundbar hooked up to my PS5. I was able to hear the dialogue fine
Yeah only a couple of lines were a bit hard to hear if you have your volume set a bit low. But if you bump it up a few notches you can hear everything just fine. Albeit it you might have a bit of hearing loss later in life. Lol
I saw this on Imax, and I loved the film but the audio was PAINFULLY loud, and the dialogue was very difficult to hear. I can't wait to watch this on 4k, and use subtitles. Also the ability to turn the volume down will help.
Yep. Our local Imax theater is perfectly setup and it was the loudest I've heard since Mad Max Fury Road. Far too loud imo.
IMAX is supposed to be loud. It’s advertised as the ultimate in picture and sound for a reason. What’s annoying to me is going to the IMAX and the volume is way too low. That happens far more often imo.
Imax is designed for the ultimate in audio and video fidelity. Cranking it to 11 doesn't make something sound better. My wife and I will see everything in Imax if the option is given. 99% of the films we've seen over the past 10 years have been presented in a loud, but balanced and dynamic level that wasn't screaming at you. Dunkirk was loud when it needed to be. Gunfire and such. It was awesome. It made sense. But dialog shouldn't sound like it's shouting/screaming at you every time.
@@alanlindsay8310, ultimate does mean loud, at least for me anyway. Your preference doesn’t mean correct.
Dunkirk and Tenet were equally loud experiences in my local IMAX. I’m pretty sure the volume level on Nolan’s films are stipulated by him and the studio. His movie and his vision, end of story.
Agreed. Nolan has been on record that this is how he wants his films presented. It's just a shame that the majority of people that pay to see his films feel that the audio level and presentation for Tenet were crap. Imax just made it louder crap.
Thank You for the thorough review Jeff. After hearing the report, I think that I might wait on this one awhile. Probably will wait until the price goes down.
I saw it in theaters and I preordered. I'm just a Nolan fanboy
Big same
Definitely
Solid review man. Newcomer to your channel and really enjoying it thus far great work! I’ve been reading Highdefdigest for years for their reviews and it’s a good departure to see it. Just got my SVS PB 16 Ultra a few months ago and I am SOOO looking forward to watching this Tuesday night! Keep up the good work!
First movie i've ever watched that i couldn't fully wrap my head around first viewing. Those IMAX scenes though, literally as perfect quality as you could ever imagine.
Saw it in 70mm IMAX loudest movie I've ever experienced my seat was vibrating
Agreed. This was just a notch louder than dunkirk. So good.
Did you still have trouble hearing the dialogue
Same!
This movie was really loud in our IMAX, but jesus, my ears were ringing for a week after Dunkirk.
And in a way that just means we’re approaching pushed movie loudness just like Music currently is.
Great movie. Audio mix was a Nolan mix. Not surprising but it's all about the scope of this movie. Ground breaking and epic.
I can’t wait to get this blu ray this coming up Tuesday
What kind of Atmos setup do you have... is it a soundbar like the Samsung hw q950 or actual separate speakers? Thanks.
I ended up turning the subtitles on and off throughout the movie.
Just...keep them on?
I don't know what's worse, that you didn't just leave them on or that so far 16 people did the same thing.
@@Filmssentials Subtitles are incredibly distracting during action sequences. Can totally understand turning them off during those.
@@ZodsSnappedNeck They really are not, if you just get used to subtitles, you don't even notice that they're there.
@@ZodsSnappedNeck to be fair the subtitles wont often appear during action sequences because of the minimal dialogue

Great review, unfortunately I won’t be adding this to my 4k collection due to the dialogue issues. Keep up the good work .
Sadly I have no IMAX cinemas where I live, so I always love when I watch a Nolan film on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray for the first time. I can find out which scenes were filmed with IMAX cameras.
I cant wait to play this movie at home. I love the introduction and the music was pumping me up. Also I enjoy my Polk mini 2.1 speaker system and I know there are better audio systems but I do enjoy them when the volume is high.
It's one of the first Warner Bros. films on Ultra HD Blu-ray to use the jump cut clip show menu.
I saw it in a theater in October and the audio issues weren't exaggerated! It probably didn't help that there's a ton of exposition.
I watched this movie tonight in Bluray quality with headphones and had no issue with hearing the dialogue but the score was definitely louder than most movies. I thought the movie was epic with all the twists and cinematic experience in inverse scenes. I may have to see if the DTS HD Master 5.1 is hard to hear the dialogue when using my 5.1 setup instead of headphones. I can't watch a movie late at night that's loud in the living room through speakers because I have a wife and daughter sleeping, who get up much earlier than me.
The solution to the dialogue issue may be to use headphones, not closed captioning. I also boost my center speaker sound already with my AV receiver to make dialogue more clear. My setup is only modest because high end is out of my price range.
Honestly, your reviews are fantastic. I started with the UHD Hobbit and LofR and watched everyone since
Do you reckon it would be better before watching to increase the centre channel
Saw this in IMAX, then got my mum to go see it with me in the cinema again, she loved it and we proerdered the steelbook the moment we got home.
I just bought it with your link! Thanks for being you!
Awesome review!
Watching this film in IMAX was the best film experience I’ve ever had. Both in regards to the film itself and the technical aspects such as the visuals and the audio. Absolutely breathtaking.
@Karl with a K When and where did he say that?
So hard to get immersed when I had to keep reaching for the remote to turn the sound up or down
Yea, that was super annoying.
I find it funny that we have to go through this sound issue with every Nolan release, it's nothing new though this has been his choice for most of his career. He likes a somewhat muffled sound mix, it's his artistic choice, not a mistake or error. (not directing this statement at you Jeff, just a general observation) I think it's a bad choice but I get it and I like to experience a film the way the creator intended ususally. I saw TENET one a fantastic IMAX sceen in Nashville and it looks and sounds amazing. My group did have trouble with dialog, as expected, but we got enough out of it to follow this very complex story and were pleased.
I know I'm going to have watch any Nolan film a 2nd time at home with subtitles and that's ok. I watch nearly everything with subtitles, it's a personal preference to make sure I catch names and other stuff, it's also why I've never had an issue with foreign films as well. But as for TENET, it's really good and I can't wait to watch it again.
Would you recommend the 4k over the standard blu ray ? Dites it worth the extra money ?
With the holiday season in mind, your beard is giving me heavy Klondike Cornelius vibes. 😉
Can you do a walk around of your setup and gear for your home theater?
Hey there, regarding your new tv, I’ve got the x950h so almost the same. When you are watching movies do you use Dolby vision?
Reason I ask is I want to trust your video settings and copy them for my own movie viewing, thank you if you can help!
I believe this guy has a Q Series Samsung last I checked Samsung doesn't support Dolby vision
Im probably using the subtitles, i dont mind, i like learning the dialog and i preordered the steel book from best buy
TENET was an awesome imax experience. I have brought the 4k and will be watching this weekend. cannot wait. Loved it so much, i dont get why people were so down on it.
While the audio is muddled at times it never got in the way of either me or my missus understanding of the film. i kinda get why he did it (people in masks etc) but you can get that across well and still make it clear they are behind masks without obscuring speech.
Great video. Anyone else get here by Googling 'Did they fix the sound on Tenat for DVD release'?
Since there's no HDR and the sound is at 5.1 what is the major upside to getting the 4K disc over there Blu-ray disc. I believe you still get IMAX shots on the Blu-ray.
Like your reviews since I see movies with similar eyes. Only buy 4K if visual upgrade. Example- 4K Predator, my fav movie
I can't wait to order this on 4K Blu Ray definitely enjoyed this film in theaters
I love Nolan but its time he sorts out his sound mix. I saw Tenet in IMAX so it wasn't a big issue, but I've watched his previous films on 4K and I was constantly adjusting the volume, the effects were too loud and the dialogue was too low. I'll still get Tenet on 4K because of the IMAX/65mm sequences alone, as they look spectacular on a 4K UHD TV.
Will you be doing a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 4k review? I hope so. Keep up the great work!
Hi Jeff, did you notice any flickering on this disc, specifically the montage where Kat and The Protagonist are talking outside the school which is intercut with him sending Pattison's character into the Freeport, the bricks of the school wall behind Kat exhibited a slight flickering effect but I don't know whether it's inherent to the disc or not....
Hm, didn't have any issues with the dialogue... but we do have a humble 3.1 audio setup with boosted dialogue tracks plus enabled subtitles by default. My least favorite part about watching movies in theatres is the lack of subtitles, and possibility that I might miss some dialogue. I read much better than I can hear
I love your channel. I am from Denmark and English is therefore not my native language. Is it possible for you to mention the subtitle options in your reviews so I know if I should buy the release outside of Denmark?
Dialogue probably won’t bother me too much because I’m weird and put on subtitles. Really wanted to get this on 4K. Thanks for the review, now I can wait for some sort of sale instead of handing over the $30.
Saw it in IMAX 1570 and the sound mix for the dialogue was almost incomprehensible. It was actually better when I saw it a few weeks later in 70mm in a normal theatre.
jeff, did you find the bass a bit to overwhelming in places.
What do you think about streaming from kodi and the 3rd party add ons. The bit rate’s are sometimes up to 60 bit rate. I don’t know the technical terms for it . Much better picture than Netflix 4K. Right now I only have a standard Blu-ray player at 1080p
I bought the 4k digital version from the play store and I'm annoyed that the imax scenes have been cropped to match the rest of the movie. So it lacks that immersive look you get with the imax.
Funnily enough, when I saw it in theaters it had subtitles. The SDH showing was the only one with seats left
I agree. I hate when they stack disc. I also wish Best Buy would have disc side by side, in their steelbooks, like the older bluray steelbooks. Not on top of one another.
Thanks for not trashing the movie just because you didn't fully understand it the first time!
My first viewing in IMAX when Neil first appears and says, “it seems you need an introduction to a prominent Mumbai local on short notice” might as well have been complete gibberish lol.
Would you do a review for the 2020 4k Fifth Element?
Saw it in theater. I'll grab it at the redbox or library to see if I can make sense if it. Definitely turning on the subs
Honestly. It made more sense my second and third time, but it was still nice to see something big in the theater this year.
Saw this movie in an empty theater. Probably in top 3 best movie experiences I’ve had.
I saw it twice, once in a regular theatre and second in an IMAX 1570 format screening here in Melbourne. Huge improvement on dialogue audibility in the IMAX theatre compared to Hoyts in which the dialogue was so muffled it made me really not enjoy the movie. Redeemed itself on the IMAX screening however.
I have an Onkyo Receiver with a Polk Audio Atmos 7.1 speaker setup. I hope I can make out the dialog.
Is anyone having issues with the audio in the scene where the protagonist and Kat are overlooking the ocean (about 50:51 into the movie)? Noticed it in my most recent viewing in a GXL theater (atmos) but never noticed it in an IMAX or Dolby Cinema theater. I noticed it on my surround sound as well. Sounds like there’s supposed to be wind in the background but sounds kinda bad.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who had issues understanding what the heck people were saying. Not saying I didn’t enjoy it, but half of my issues understanding the plot were because I couldn’t hear the dang dialogue (even in the “quiet” parts). Nolan really needs to let other people do the sound mixing for him.
Still thought it was a great movie though!
Last time I went to the theatres?
Saw this film for the 3rd time.
Can’t wait to soak in that IMAX(ish) glory at home!
I was on the fence about buying this. No longer on the fence. I'll wait for a really good sale.
I saw it in a theatre. Heard about the dialog issues but didn't think it was that bad. The blaring loud soundtrack got a bit wearing though.
Exactly. I saw it twice in theater I had no issues understanding or hearing the dialog. Loved the movie!
Nolan movies need a few viewings for sure! But what a better reason for physical media! Too bad about the audio though. Denzel is my favorite actor too, I wasn't actually aware his son was there but the moment he spoke I recognized it. Carrying the torch! Got to see this one at the theater, so glad I was now that we're in lockdown again. I've always got my center channel raised by a few db's (age and hearing lol)
Hey, man! Great review. I keep seeing people say this in the comments of my video but I honestly didn't have an issue with it. I mean, maybe it's just me? The sound was crazy loud for sure lol In my video I mentioned that I didn't even have the volume up more than half way and I had to lower it haha Still though, I didn't have a problem with the dialogue. I'm gonna have to go back and take a look at everything. Wish I had known about the issue first.
Great film loved it at the cinema especially in imax wow. And the disc looks fantastic in 4k
just adjust your center channel its not complicated. Got the 4k today I herd all dialogue even through the action scenes and music.
We're kindred spirits...I can't stand stacking either. Don't scratch my stuff! :D Thanks for the review! Too bad about the dialog. I'm such an audio nerd, so I'm hesitant on getting this.
I can’t wait to finally watch this movie!
Last movie I saw in a theater? My exact thought was “WTF”...
Interesting review, thx Jeff. I love Christopher Nolan movies, but his aspect ratio shifting is not friendly to us with fixed 2.35 screens and projectors. Guess I’ll watch at 1.78 which is a lose lose situation 🥲
Wouldn’t have been friendly on 2.35:1 anyway, since Tenet’s primarily aspect ratio is 2.20:1.
No problem..you just zoom the picture to fit your 2.35 screen. Then mask the picture that is overshooting.
instagram.com/sambocave
I have a Sonos ARC soundbar that has an excellent dialogue enhancement system. I know I won’t have problems hearing the dialogue.
In their cinematic presentations in IMAX theaters, scenes shot in IMAX format from the movies The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were projected with an aspect ratio of 1.43:1. 1.90: 1 only for DVD/Blu ray!
Technically 1.78:1 on home media.
I seen this movie about three times in imax just incredible
It Drives Me Crazy that Discs keep getting stacked!! I usually always have my center bump up above everything else, so when I actually get this, I’ll be interested to see how it sounds. I honestly don’t think it’ll make a difference.
The disc were not stacked with the steelbook
Hi man, does it have Portuguese subtitles? Is it the american version? Thanks
Loved it. I took your advice on the sound. The movie theater sound was not good either
I love my 16:9 screen for the aspect ratio changes. Can’t wait to see this. Fallout was awesome.
A little worried about how this is going to sound on my 2 channel set up.
