    This movie in part inspired me to upgrade my home theatre to 4K HDR and start collecting UHD blu-rays. I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX at the theatre and knew I would want to rewatch it many times, and 1080p just wasn’t going to cut it.

      Many 4k players upscale blu rays to 4k. Although it's not true 4k, there isn't much difference between them on films that have released over the last few years.

    One movie being the reason to upgrade your entire home theater is legitimately the highest praise possible. Such an amazing film, I saw Oppenheimer 3 times in 70mm IMAX and once in a standard 70mm showing, I can’t believe I haven’t gotten sick of it, I’m probably gonna end up watching it again when I get my grubby fingers on this disc. Great review as always!

    Regarding the flicker, you can also notice this in The Dark Knight/Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet on 4K. It only stands out in brighter scenes. I believe it's an artifact of transferring the 70mm footage as detailed as possible.

    • @yommers
      @yommers 10 месяцев назад

      People aren't used to seeing it these days because nearly everything is shot digitally and Nolan is one of the few heroes keeping film alive. There's a good reason movies have long been called "flicks"!

    • @UnitedRedDevil13
      @UnitedRedDevil13 10 месяцев назад

      @@yommers the reasons movies flicked was due to poor upkeep of the bulbs during projection. That’s why they flickered or were called flicks. I don’t think that applies to Nolan’s movies. A ton of other movies on film don’t flicker. I’m curious if it’s more to do with the imax or 70mm format specifically.

    I was lucky enough to have my 4K blu-ray steelbook combo arrived four days before the official release.
    Let me tell you ; the 4K looks amazing, but what shocked me the most is the regular blu-ray, it is simply phenomenal. The sharpness and contrast is like almost nothing I've seen on 1080p blu-ray, when I first load it I though for a second this was the 4K one, the colors are a bit more muted than the 4K, but it's that good.

      Yes it's true. Christopher Nolan said that he's worked on both the Bluray version and the 4K version. So no matter what format you buy, it will be the definitive version of his film as he wants everyone to buy this movie rather than streaming.

    The flicker in film projection comes from the switch between 2 frames of films. The images moves through a projector on screen and you notice the flicker only on bright scenes. When I saw 2001 or Hateful 8 in 70mm, the flicker is there. It’s awesome Nolan reproduced that for the 4K.

  • @BigDinSanDiego

    Remember each frame on film is like taking an individual picture. The light may not be exactly the same on each frame. Thus the beauty of film! I’m a fan of a 5.1 system. It feels more authentic almost like analog records to digital music.

However, I know there's a lot of collectors out there and I'm a collector of something else. And just like my other hobby all it takes is buying the first couple and you're hooked. I got the Walmart icon edition because it had by far my favorite cover (Oppenheimer hasn’t had the best posters) and was pretty impressed with the packaging; kind of felt like a Criterion. My only complaints are the picture of what’s inside the packaging on the top left of the slip-cover. I don’t need you to advertise what’s inside the package that I already own! It makes me wanna throw away the slip-cover. The disks also slip out pretty easily if you even slightly tip the case upside down.

    Can’t wait to get this 4K, SteelBook. Awesome swag - I have both books and plan to jump on them asap.

    I noticed the flicker, but I also noticed it in Dunkirk on some of the wide shots of the sky so it didn’t bother me. Felt very filmic and natural like you said.

    It's not just that Nolan shoots on large format film. He also uses a "camera-out" workflow whenever possible that avoids any sort of intermediate digital scans and digital "improvement" upon the negative which has been standard for decades on film-sourced movies. Most of Oppenheimer never went to ones and zeros until the last step of the workflow when it was scanned for final distribution (except for cases where dupe prints of the IP would have been struck for film projection). Generational loss is mitigated and we get to see all of those beautiful "flaws" from the film source (i.e., "flickering").

    It might be that DV has 12 bit Metadata. Yet we don't have any TV panels capable of 12 bit color.

    4k Oppenheimer discs sold out everywhere where I live; had to settle for the last blu ray copy at my local Best Buy. Hoping they release more on 4K soon!

    I watched Oppenheimer in theatres in True IMAX 70mm and in regular at Cineplex and the 15 Perforation 70mm true IMAX experience was the best way of watching it.

    I can't get a copy locally. I ordered one on Amazon after the first wave was sold out. I'm getting a deliver date of dec 9 - 11th. I'm just amazed a movie like this being sold out on disc. Very rare to see. Steelbook? What steelbook. Disappeared like a fart in the wind.

    Couldn’t agree more the 4k release is killer. Highly recommend you read The Bio it’s amazingly detailed and really tells his story so much more . You really get a sense of all the behind the scenes backstabbing that Strauss engaged in . It’s a massive story but a very engrossing read

    Great review bud.
    Got my 4k today and going to watch over the weekend. Can't wait to revisit as only saw it once at BFI IMAX London.
    I've also got the making of book you showed too. It's incredible and like you say a brilliant companion to the film.
    I have American Prometheus and the Screenplay. I just need the orange vinyl soundtrack 😂

    Lucked out on the last copy of the Icon edition thanks to walking my dog, saw it twice on regular 70MM and the image is retained! Also picked up the Soavi bundle from Severin and eXistenZ from Vinegar Syndrome!

    The stand that had Oppenheimer at Walmart was completely empty, but luckily for me they had some in the back. Or maybe I wasn’t so lucky, since my 4K was very scratched :’(
    I emailed Universal, hopefully I’ll hear from them.

    I noticed that the movie soundtrack was constant in the film
    I got the thought "this movie would suck with out this sound" then I just started to not enjoy the film, because I just tried to imagine it without the sound
