I like the changing IMAX aspect ratios in MI:Fallout, but MI:Ghost Protocol is still my number 1 of the Tom Cruise depictions of Ethan Hunt. The bright, crisp opening scene rooftop zoom-shot, chase, and shootout, with an immersive sound-design, let you know that you were in for something "special"! The detonation inside the Kremlin and nighttime shootout on the Moscow bridge literally knocked me off my seat! The climb outside the Burj Khalifa and the sonic surround-effect of the raging sandstorm was epic! Still gives me chills simply writing about it! The fact that the Oscars have yet to recognize any of these movies for even a NOMINATION in Sound-Editing/Design is a travesty!

In addition to your 5 titles, I would include, 1917 (2019), Full Metal Jacket (1987), and Guns of Navarone (1961). Honorable mentions: A Few Good Men (1992), Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Gladiator (2000), The Great Escape (1963), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Spartacus (1960), and Top Gun (1986); more character-driven Action films in the Military Movie genre.

Midway could be labeled a Docudrama. I know a lot about the WWII history in the Pacific Theater. My Dad was a Marine Gunner/Redioman in SBD Douglas Dauntless Dive Bombers. I remember him telling that Dive Bombing on enemy shipping was the "Scariest"and costliest. They usually Dived in Pairs - one time there was this huge Explosion next to them that almost shook them out of control. My dad looked over after and saw the SBD next to them was gone - it took a direct hit from anti-aircraft fire. My Dad's unit VMSB-236 shipped out from Hawaii September 1943 for Henderson Field Guadalcanal Solomon Islands. 25 pairs of Pilots and Gunners went over - 1 year later only 5 pairs came back whole - a little over 50% died. My dad and his pilot were 1 of the 5 to come home whole. Midway is a very under rated Movie because they stayed with the facts without adding to them. I watched this at the Theater 3 times and got an Idea of what it was like to be diving through anti-aircraft bombs at 260 mph and pulling without loosing control. With only 2 or 3 flying SBD's I'm thankful for Computer Graphic People that create an SBD that looks real that shows me what the Pilots and Gunners of the SBD did in WWII. Midway was the Real Deal - no fiction here.

Fury is NOT a ton of fun to watch! Great movie, great acting, great story, but that story is not a "fun" one. Midway is one of those movies I find myself enjoying more and more. I read the bad reviews but they all mentioned how good the sound design was. So no I always pop this in if I make an adjustment to the system or just want a brief listen of a good soundmix movie and end up wating over and over again because it pulls me in. I have to agree with you on Apocalypse Now release. Picture is just amazing and the upgrade to Atmos blew me away how good it was. Disney/Marvel can learn a lot of lessons how to do a proper Atmos mix from this movie. Criterion can learn how to package their movies from this release. I'm usually a stickler for newer war films since nothing can beat older films like Tora, Tora, Tora, A Bridge Too Far, Patton, The Longest Day, or Saving Private Ryan, but I was pleasantly surprised with Midway. It was a fun watch and a great addition to my collection.

    • @mrb0775
      @mrb0775 2 года назад

Joseph, I agree that all of the war films that you listed, except one, are worth taking the time to watch because they are either exciting, or at least interesting, or both. But I've watched "A Bridge Too Far", on 2 occasions, once when I had it on DVD, and then, a few years after that, I watched the Blu-ray edition of the film. But even viewing the film for that 2nd time on a high quality 80 inch screen, with a great surround sound system, equipped with a high performance subwoofer, the film still struck me as an overlong, dull, & repetitious try at simulating scenes of combat, so it's not surprising , that it sparked so little public interest, that it failed to make American film goers want to go see it at theaters, in any large numbers. The basic reaction among most people who did see "A Bridge Too Far" in the U.S. seemed to be right along the lines of how Roger Ebert described the movie when he gave it 2 stars out of 4. Mr Ebert wrote: "Such an exercise in wretched excess, such a mindless series of routine scenes, such a boringly violent indulgence in all the blood and guts and moans they could find, that by the end we're prepared to speculate that maybe Levine (the film's producer) went two or even three bridges too far. The movie's big and expensive and filled with stars, but it's not an epic. It's the longest B-grade war movie ever made." Yes Joseph, though you did list such fine war films as "Saving Private Ryan", "Patton", and "The Longest Day", "A Bridge Too Far" certainly shouldn't be included among such company, since the movie commits the ultimate sin for a war film which involves large numbers of people being killed, which namely is that the film's scenes of battle not only seem fake & totally unconvincing, but that before long, the viewer realizes that the war scenes are so mediocre that they just become monotonous. The film needed a more resourceful & dynamic director, who's highly skilled at creating convincing action scenes, like Steven Spielberg, whose "Saving Private Ryan" is such a masterpiece among war films, that veterans of World War II have commented about how just seeing that film brought back to them intense feelings of fear and loss that they experienced during that war, which usually stay more in their unconscious minds than being too likely to surface during their day to day lives. BTW, most veterans of combat just think of "A Bridge Too Far" as either being phony, or just see it as something that's pretty funny, when it isn't seeming merely dull to them.
Finally, it must be said that though "Saving Private Ryan" is only 5 minutes shorter than "A Bridge Too Far" is, due to the dull & repetitious way that director Richard Attenborough had his would-be epic unfold, just about anyone who saw both films, some years ago, will likely remember "A Bridge Too Far" as seeming like it was at least 45 min to an hour longer than "Saving Private Ryan" seemed to be.

"Sergeant York," based on real life WW1 hero Alvin York, and played by Gary Cooper, is one of the best films of all time. It's really a superb love/religion/war movie all wrapped into one. Truly a must see.

Pretty sure Gemini Man was actually filmed in 120fps. We just have it at 60fps on disc. And I think people are just used to 24fps. And with RUclips being a thing and more videos being 60fps it might get people more comfortable with higher framerate.

Not sure if John Wick would fall into the comic book genre I guess I will have to wait. I think it's a top 10 disc.
    I like your list though.
    Hon mentions
    Mad Max Fury Road
    Last Action Hero.
    The Protege
    1917
    No Time to Die

    Baby Driver
    Bloodshot
    The Fate of the Furious
    No Time To Die

I'm excited to check out the grain accuracy in some of these movie transfers. Matrix 4k has excellent film grain. I hope to see some day, a modern digital film shot on real sets with truly accurate fake grain. Grain that might even simulate Kodachrome, Agfa or Kodak traits. You can really see the fake video game style effects in some excellent modern movies like Greyhound where it could have made this list had it been shot on set with some kind of realistic grain and actually be available on physical media of course, lol.

Yes, I strongly agree with you because the amazing lighting, shadows, and overall look of the incredible cinematography done for "Apocalypse Now", simply puts that film in a special class of its own, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure I've viewed that film at least 25 times, first seeing it in a theater, in 1979, then on "The Movie Channel", several times, followed by getting the VHS version, then I viewed it on 2 different DVD releases I had, followed by 2 different Blu-ray releases, and then, of course, now having the UHD 4K Blu-ray versions of the 3 different cuts of the film, that are part of the absolutely terrific 6 disc set, which our "Films At Home" guide, just displayed for us at the end of his highly interesting video. Yup, I so appreciate the amazing look of the film which cinematographer Vittorio Storaro achieved for "Apocalypse Now", that IMO, the credit he deserves, equals that which belongs to the efforts of Francis Coppola, as the work of both men resulted in the creation of a film that will not only continue to withstand the test of time, but will still be here, enthralling future film & movie fans, many decades after I leave this mortal coil.

Midway is an awesome movie and disc. I love the original from the 70's, and this was nearly as good, and if you watch the History Buffs RUclips channel, he rates this extremely high for historical accuracy; one of the best ever in that regard.

Just bought and watched Gemini maybe 2 weeks ago, good action movie and looked fantastic. Just ordered Pvt. Ryan today, everything else listed that I wanted I have. The Matrix trilogy I have all on 4k with Resurrections 4k steel on order. I may pick up Midway based on your review.
