Can’t wait
I had kind of hoped Arrival to be in this list as the story is well made and it makes you question the concept of time.
The Thing deserves an honorable mention because it blends innovative practical effects and horror with themes of mistrust and paranoia.
2001 a space odyssey
Rebecca,
Avatar? I thought you would not include animated films 🤷🏿♂️🤦🏾♂️
The Thing deserves an honorable mention because it blends innovative practical effects and horror with themes of mistrust and paranoia.
Or should be in the list.
Ignore that comment and whatever message was sent. It's a fake scammer account posing as wachmojo
That was the first movie I thought of.
so true.
The Thing was a remake of the film _The Thing From Another World_ (1951) which was an adaptation of the novella _Who Goes There?_ by John W. Campbell, which was clearly inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's _At the Mountains of Madness._ Everything comes back to the Man from Providence. Ever hear tell of a SHOGGOTH?!
Ripley using the powerloader in Aliens saying " Get away from her you bitch!" Will always be an iconic movie quote to me.
The MOST iconic!!
Also iconic...
Ripley: "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Hudson: "F**kin A."
Yup.I remember that and just now wondered why it wasnt in there.
I remember seeing that in the theater opening weekend. It was packed. When she came out and said that, the entire theater stood up and cheered. It’s still my favorite movie theater experience ever.
@@MikeSmith-rh5gc people talking after leaving the theater
i went to see "one flew over the cuckoos nest" and when the chief killed the hero to stop his suffering people stood up and cheered hi actions
I would've included Arrival (Denis Villeneuve), Interstellar (Christopher Nolan) and A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick)
Arrival for sure.
@Nick Mills Well A Clockwork Orange is well-made not sure on other two.
Interstellar is just a sillier and juvenile 2001 so nah.
@@rayhaanalbuquerque1744 Well it's the time travel stuff too.
@@rayhaanalbuquerque1744 Lost me when they walked into a launch pad next door to an office. I mean, have you not heard of rocket blast?
Pretty much every movie in this list was a stepping stone toward a new era of movie-making. We knew that the effects of Terminator 2 would change cinema. The same for Aliens, The Matrix, etc. It's like being part of a cultural moment.
And Metropolis gave us the cityscape from Dark City and Blade Runner, among others.
Ya but metropolis should have been way back there. Have you seen it. A movie can be good for it's time without being good in our time.😂 #4 my goodness

This ranking is a totally joke. Avatar? Really space Pocahontas is a great movie? Aliens and not Alien of Ridley Scott? Do you have a deal with Jame Cameron? If Aliens is included why not The thing from John Carpenter? Are you serius? Her, Back of the Future and Eternal Sunshine are great movies but not Sci Fi, they both are almost fantasy...Terminator 2 is better than Blade Runner? are you twelve years old kids? You have a great business here Mojo...
interstellar ?
Terminator 2 is far better than blade runner but thats just my opinion
Touch grass my dude
So basically every space movie should be "fantasy"
Terminator 2 >>>>>>>> Blade runner
Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049 are my fave scifi movies, dark yet beautifully filmed and score is what makes it amazing to watch.
Well, the original is by miles better than sequel. Not only because the visuals can compete with the sequel, but the story and twist were daring and genre defining movie itself. I can say none to sequel. It looks albeit beautifully composed, very flat. Story was especially obvious allegory, which astounded me.
Scott as a producer shouldn't have backed up when Villeneuve asked not to trespass his directorial works.
@@CATDHD I prefer original but I've only seen the cut versions.
Original Blade runner is maybe the greatest movie ever made, not just sci fi ... the sequel is kind of meh, its nice but with the original as a guide, thats the bare minimal most directors can come up with, there are so many even better cyberpunk illustrations on the internet more atmospheric and thoughtful than 2049 ..... the sequel has so much unfulfilled potential ....
@@88feji not only that, 2049 is around 40 minutes longer than it should. I agree with everything you said. Villeneuve, according to Ridley Scott who produced the film, asked Scott to not interfere with his vision. Admirable, but the script also was too weak. I dearly loved to see Scott direct the movie. And that VIlleneuve guy somehow has full trust from studios for Dune, for upcoming Rendevouz with Rama.
@@CATDHD Dune I like actually.
The Sci-Fi genre is where extremely awesome and extraordinary things happen.
Geez, talk about oversimplification.
Yeah
Even some bad Sci-Fi movies are still awesome, because they're bad.
and that's an understatement
I thought Close Encounters of the Third Kind would at least have had an honorable mention. I loved that movie. Those famous five musical notes always get stuck in my head after watching though.
Interesting fact : Spielberg's mother was a composer and father was computer engineer or something. When they join, there is a mutual understanding, finding common language.
it did get a mention tho
@@CATDHD How do you know this?
Are they first five notes of "When You Wish Upon (a Star)?"
Yep, robbed. That movie is in the top 10 for sure.
'Planet of the Apes.'
'The Matrix.'
'Alien.'
'Terminator 2: Judgment Day.'
'Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope.'
'Aliens.'
'Children of Men.'
'Back to the Future.'

I LOVE THESE GOOD SCI-FI MOVIES.
_Ghostbusters_ was a comedy, not a sci-fi film..
@@HailAnts and fantasy movie
@@HailAnts So is BTTF more so as Comedy than Sci-Fi.
@@sammyfabelman Bits of it.
@Just A Peaceful Man Who's Born in 1980's I will agree on Star Wars, Planet Of The Apes being groundbreaking. I could say the same for Alien and Aliens.
I prefer The Terminator to Terminator 2: Judgment Day I think it's overrated with T1 I like it's 80'sness but I find that the twist doesn't make sense. I like The Matrix and Children Of Men.
Ghostbusters I don't think it's aged that well apart from Bill Murray being the highlight of the film and some creativity in story. Back To The Future it introduced me to the time travel concept but it's got plotholes I think.
I think District 9 deserved an honourable mention too, with its themes of 'otherness' too!
deserves to bump a few off
Was getting near the end and was like "Brazil better at least get mentioned?" One of the best and lesser known "dystopian future" movies.
Yup, all classics, I’ve seen them all. Too bad the list is too short to include films already mentioned by others: Thing, Gattaca, Equilibrium, Moon, District 9.
"The Time Machine" (1960 version Starring Rod Taylor) deserves to up there with other top entries.
“Silent Running” 1972. A sentimental favorite with superb special effects from first time director Douglas Trumbull, and a message that becomes more prescient 50 years later.
Is definitely better than some of the main list and all of the honorable mentions.
My honorable mentions:
The Last Starfigther (1984)
The Ice Pirates (1984)
The Abyss (1989)
12 Monkeys (1995)
Good list , really liked The Last Starfighter ( recruited by playing an Arcade game, amazing)
1. The Empire Strikes Back(No Doubt)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
4. The Matrix
5. Alien(1979)
I've got a soft spot for the old sci-fi films from the 1950's
Like THEM?
Fiend without a face is my favorite.
they should have put District 9 on this list

Who agrees that Interstellar should of been on this list
Yeeeees
I remember seeing 'Empire Strikes Back' at the cinema when it came out many moons ago, the classic line from Darth Vader had everyone yelling and screaming, it was such a surprise but also a great movie. You could have included 'The 5th Elements' and '12 Monkeys'- also great films. Cheers
I agree completely on all of them
And as you say seeing it in the cinema for the first time when it came out will forever be one of my favorite moments in cinema ❤❤
I also loved ET when it came out was just a couple of years older than Elliott and I must say it made an impression on me
😂😂❤❤❤
Just saying 🇳🇴
I couldn’t include anything Star Wars, not for what you’re thinking they are clearly fantasy movies with sci-fi elements the are absolutely not sci-fi films.
I understand why it wasn't on here but I'm still sad that Live, Die, Repeat or The Edge of Tomorrow isn't on here. Great visuals, a humourous but emotional look at war plus themes of loss, grief and regret as well as the courage to do something even when you don't know the results always hit home with me
You’re right I’d put it in and drop Avatar.
Because watchmojo sucks
Absolutely. But both of those movies have no cultural footprint at all, so
@@CATDHD Both? Apparently you don't realize that the studio changed the title for home video release. LIVE DIE REPEAT and THE EDGE OF TOMORROW are the same film.
@@tawnieriekena7 i know that. I meant LDR and Avatar
I watched the Matrix after its release on a rented tape. I got to it late on a work night yet started watching it after 11 PM. When the movie ended, I took a few seconds to try to comprehend what I had just watched and rewound the tape and watched it again to about 3:30. I didn't care that it was going to be a rough day, I just had my mind blown away.
it really is a masterpiece
Even if we see Ex machine in the first seconds, i am a little upset it wasnt in the list. One of my all time favorite movies. Blew my mind.
Bored me to tears. Wouldn’t have been original to a sci-fi-fi fan by the 50s. My friends asked if I wanted to see the movie and I thought it was the Warren Ellis title and was thrilled so I said yes. Bored me to tears and I knew the exact end before the movie started because it’s a bad cliche.
The Fifth Element is gold. Story, acting, humor and action. A superior Sci Fi movie.
I love "The Fifth Element", but in my eyes it is at least as much fantasy as it is Sci-Fi. So, great movie, but when it comes to the greatest of all time (so far), it is not in the Top 20, sadly. Same goes for "Strange Days" to mention a movie, which seems to be rather a bit underappreciated.
@@firstclaw1 yea, the fact that you are unable to put that movie in proper cathegory explains why you also agree with this list that is puting last Mad Max here but not the second or The Fifth Element...
I understand why they may not have made the list, but if you want good sci-fi, i also highly recommend:
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
Arrival
Ex Machina
Annihilation
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow (aka Live, Die, Repeat)
Bladerunner: 2049 (obviously the orig is better, but the sequel is very good IMO)
12 Monkeys
The 5th Element
Interstellar (kind of surprised they picked Inception instead, but both are great)
Looper
District 9
Snowpiercer
The Thing
+ Upgrade
I have to say I think Arrival was probably one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in a very long time. Kind of sad it didn't make this list.
definitely one of my all time best alien encounter movies.
But the premise was stupid.
There is NO WAY that the universe is pre-ordained, but IF it is, then there is no way to measure or discern that, literally by its own logic. If we don't HAVE free will, the aliens can't come and undermine that,
a. It won't occur to them to do it, because THEY HAVE NO FREE WILL TO DECIDE THINGS
and
b. It won't MEAN anything to us if they did "prove" it, nothing would change because everything is pre-ordained.
STUPID, ill thought out premise on a STUPID movie. With a stupid female lead actor.
I will leave it to your own imagination what liking that trash makes you, in my opinion.
Best scifi in our current decade. But how much can we really listen to a list that placed star wars 5 and didn't put dune on the list.
of the type of Arribal, I RECOMMEND "CONTACT", Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey act there, the movie is thrilling, full of tension and mistery, it's gonna blow ur heads
@@DyslexicLemonz these are more comercial than good xd, have seen the man from earth?? or the oa series? these are gems hidden in the dark for lack of marketing
Upgrade is one I really enjoyed in recent years. Such a cool concept and a nice twist at the end. The look and feel of the time seemed realistic too. It gave me Matrix vibes. I still think the original Matrix is one of thee best films ever made though.
Upgrade was wonderful. It show that you don't need a 200M budget to produce a superb piece of cinema.
@j0nnicage NAH, it's a bad copy of venom, it even has the same scenes, like the one in the hose, exact copy, 0% originality, 0/10.
@@saierwe okay but Upgrade came out first. 🤔 and I can't tell if your trolling because a chip in your head controlling your body and an alien inside your body that turns you in to a super anti-hero wasn't the same thing to me, but hey man you are totally entitled to your opinion....but Upgrade came out before Venom 😁
@@j0nnicage oh so venom is the exact copy of upgrade then, sorry
@@saierwe no worries friend!
I agree with the #1 pick. After watching this movie back in the day when it first came out, I proceeded to the theaters no less than 11 times to see it again. Though there was a lot of questions about the meaning, if you read the book, the meaning becomes clear. But, what I found most fasinating was the special effects. As some scientists have said, this movie was as close to realism as they ever have seen on screen and I agree. I guess that is why I loved it so much. And, of course, I have since purchased the DVD and watch it every so often just for the amazement it gives.
My top favorite of all times is The Terminator, Star Wars, Planet of The Apes, The Matrix, Back To The Future, Aliens, Star Trek, Mad Max Fury Road..I cant binge watching this movies repeatly all day all night!
My top 2p greatest sci-fi movies of all time:
1. The Matrix
2. İnception
3. İnterstellar
4. Source Code
5. Annihilation
6. Ex Machina
7. Arrival
8. Blade Runner 2049 (Balde Runner)

10. Snowpiercer
11. Upgrade
12. Minority Report
13. Edge of Tomorrow
14. 12 Monkeys
15. Archive
16. I Am Mother
17. Coherence
18. Gattaca
19. Prometheus
20. Gravity
Honorable mentions: Her, Limitless, Mr.Nobody, The Fountain, Butterfly Effect, Upside Down, The Thirteenth Floor, Dark City, Donnie Darko, Tenet and Triangle
GATTACA for sure should have been on the list. Maybe 12 Monkeys and Minority Report too.
How could you not put the 1982 and 1987 best remakes ever. The Thing and The Fly. Those two classics up the graphics and Sci fi horror.
Those two movies took the "gross out the audience" a little too far.
@@thudthud5423 They were but to me it was gross in a cool way.
@@vincentphillips2577 Exactly. And done with practical effects. The critics who thought The Thing 'took it too far' were hypocritical when they hailed The Fly a couple years later. I mean, if an alien assimilated with a human, how do you think it would look? The process would be disgusting. Carpenter got it right.
@@ydcee3123 It was bad timing because E.T just came out around the same time.
@@thudthud5423 No.. I disagree on those 2.
However.. Fly'2'.. was way 'over the top' on being screwed-up with humanity.
Great list. Honorable mentions I would also include: Interstellar, Jurassic Park (original), and Total Recall (original).
Jurassic Park SHOULD'VE been on that list
2001: a space odyssey will always be number 1 not matter how many times mojo does this list even in a hundred years from now , just insuperable !!!
Blade Runner should be no.1, its far more influential than 2001 Space Odyssey ...
It seems the only people repeatedly quoting 2001 as best sci fi are the movie critics, but in reality far more great directors, writers, artists, philosophers, musicians, designers etc name Blade Runner as their influence and inspiration ...
@@88feji Chris Nolan , Spielberg, Lucas, Ridley himself , James Cameron all agree its the best Sci-fi at least movie of all time , and you say otherwise ok whatever
@@88feji The look of Blade Runner was *definitely* influenced by Metropolis, so maybe that 1927 film is even more influential?
@@88feji I'm no critic but I like 2001 better although I love Blade Runner too.
"2001" is a beautiful movie, with horribly wrong premise - that "This Something" is a TOOL, which is not - but The Language & Emotional Responsibility (FOXP2 & ARHGAP11B genes) ... So : It is a complete MISS.
Out of 20, I've expected the predator even as an honorable mention.
Taking the creature from the black lagoon, the greatest classic horror movie creature design, updating it and turning it into possibly the greatest creature design of the second half the decade & dropping it into an action film with a sci-fi twist was genius and definitely got robbed on this criminal list.
I just rewatched Back to the Future recently and it completely still holds up. What a classic.
I’ll never understand the appeal of those I was already watching awesome rated are films in theaters at 4 when the first one came out and I was bored. I’ve never changed my opinion. Probably would be my pick for most overrated of its time. E.t as well.
Children of Men is one of my all time favorites.
Star wars original trilogy, BTTF trilogy, THE THING (1982), They Live, Predator, Alien, Total Recall (1990), Invasion of the body snatchers (1978), and The Faculty. My favorites
Star Wars is a fantasy series with sci-fi elements. Probably should never be on any sci-fi list. Doesn’t mean I didn’t grow up w/ them and have vhs/dvd/Blu-ray’s except that awful trilogy Lucas made around 00. Those are the worst.

The Matrix is my all time favourite.
my first rated R movie I got to see in theaters when I was 12. Had no idea what I was walking into, thank you uncle Casey. I was never the same after.
Matrix rules & I also love I Robot
The worst part of The Matrix’s bullet time is that every sci-fi movie for the next ten years tried to replicate its magic.
@Michael Crawford I remember seeing it in a French comedy it was for obvious reasons I had seen the Matrix before but vague memories.
Brazil is a masterpiece, a (relatively) little known gem. Recommend watching it if you haven't.
I absolutely Agree! The Day the Earth Stood Still is my favorite movie of ALL time! It's message is still relevant today! Maybe even more so. Believe me, when Klattu speaks of "Reducing the Earth to a burned out cinder", it still brings shivers down my spine!
A lot of people have already mentioned some other movies who would have at least deserved a honorable mention and I want to add another one to that growing list and that is "The Andromeda strain" from 1972 (I think)
great scare movie for sure.
Interstellar, Contact and Arrival should've been on the list.
Also Gravity, District 9, Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow deserves a mention.
edge of tommorow????????? so many flaws in that ok if was a review of best comedy movies
Of those 7.. only 'District 9' is worthy!
District 9 was phenomenal
@@philiprice7875 video gamer idea of great movie!!!
@@philip6419And Contact? Contact is far better than District 9, I’d have contact anywhere in the top 3 of this list. Its a classic that not everyone understands and many stupid people are annoyed by, but man is it an absolutely vital movie. Carl Sagan just looked at the universe differently than most
for me the most impressive sci-fi movie still is close encounters of the third kind...
it has a believable narrative and is made perfectly.
2001 is not just the best science fiction movie of all time but the greatest film in history.....Stunningly beautiful with music unsurpassed ........A masterpiece beyond compare
I don’t mean to be rude and bother you but there are a lot more better movies. It’s your opinion.
War of the worlds and Invasion of the body snatchers both gave me nightmares as a kid in the late 80s early 90s so they should’ve most definitely been on the list!
Didn't expect to see "Her" here but I'm glad it is. Interstellar should 100% a top 20 sci-fi of all time
I concur. Not only did Interstellar accurately incorporate relativity as a major plot element, the equations and imaging developed anew for the film accurately predicted the actual image of a black hole as confirmed later by observation. Perhaps there was too much science fact in the movie to make a science fiction list!
I also liked The Andromeda Strain, Equilibrium, and The Martian
Equilibrium. You beat me to it.😁
1st half of Andromeda Strain is as good as anything. Great book too.
i too liked the martian the most scientific accurate of the lot (still got a few things wrong but hey hollywood
2001 is a great film but I still rate the original Star Wars "A New Hope" . as number one. Everything on a grander scale and far more character development. A whole new universe. And the good vs. evil storyline is like a great Western. The Empire Strikes back is entirely dependent on having seen the original. I rate it # 2. 2001 3rd. Alien and its sequel are more horror movies... than science fiction genre IMHO. Forbidden Planet was way, way ahead of its time and the characters really well done... including the robot. A great film with a great story based on Shakespeare. I always have a soft spot for Close Encounters. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a true classic.. The original Matrix is spellbinding.
SW is more fantasy with a sci fi skin, Lucas took inspiration mostly from movies that were not sci-fi.
List includes....
Star trek 2: wrath of Kahn
Avatar
Solaris
The day the earth stood still
Her
Mad Max Fury road
Planet of the apes
EternalSunshineOfTheSpotless mind
Blade runner movies
Arrival
2001: a space Odyssey
Back to the future
Inception
ET: the extra terrestrial
Forbidden planet
Edge of tomorrow
Children of men
Aliens
Star wars:empire strikes back
Metropolis
Snowpiercer
The Matrix
Terminator 2
Dune 2021
Tron
Brazil
The war of the worlds
Invasion of the body snatchers
"Inception" is fantastic. The only villain in the movie is the lead character's guilty conscience.
The animated special effects in "Forbidden Planet" was supplied by Disney.
"Aliens" was the perfect blend of horror, science fiction and a military action film.
"Terminator 2" was somewhat ruined by its trailers that gave away a major plot point that would have knocked the socks off of those who saw it the first time - the fact that Arnie's Terminator was NOT the bad guy but the hero.
"2001" was the monumental movie where "sci-fi grew up".
And how many of these movies would never get made today because of what Hollywood has become...
Some of my picks:
Starman (1984)
Running Man (1987)
Total Recall (1990)
Arrival (2016)
Gattaca (1997)
12 Monkeys (1995)
Fifth Element (1997)
District 9 (2009)
Moon (2009)
The Thing 1982 and The Hidden 1987 should have been on here in lieu of Avatar 2009 despite being horror/sci-fis but Her 2013 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004 are not sci-fi films just creative dramas.
Any list that has Kubrick, Cameron, Nolan, Scott, Spielberg, Lucas, Cuaron, Zemeckis, Villeneuve, Miller and the Wachowski's would be a pretty good list.
I'm missing Danny Boyle's Sunshine though.
And Tarkovsky and Lang, two of the greatest directors of all time.
I hope this list has some of the Following
A) Coherence (2013)
B) Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

THE THING ALSO DESERVE SOMETHING ,ARMAGEDON ...COME ON PEOPLE
Two major ones that need to be noted Colossus the forbin project and The Andromeda Strain
Contact starring Jody Foster is excellent. You need to do numerous lists.

You've GOT to be kidding me! Predator wasn't on this list?!?!
I think the thing that made sci-fi movies of the past so great wasn't just the sci-fi elements. But rather the blend of sci-fi and horror.
That is why the Alien franchise was so good, especially the first movie. It was completely sci-fi in its time and location but a major horror genre with its suspence. And that sound track took you right to the horror parts and you knew they were coming.
Difficult to make a top 20... but anywhere in there I would have a spot for "Contact" 😀
Needed a few more honorable mentions. The Fifth Element, Independence Day, Resident Evil, Spaceballs (yes I know it is a comedy but it was awesome, as is Men In Black and Little Shop if Horrors)
I forgot Armageddon and Critters
Admittedly I haven't seen a few of the older films on the list, but it seems Interstellar should be here somewhere.
If you actually watched those films you would realize that the mediocre at best, Interstellar, doesn't belong on any list of great science fiction films.
Annihilation deserves way more credit then it gets 👏
YES!!
I love Annihilation ... so sad its overlooked due to not getting wide release in the theaters ....
Its a fantastic retelling of "Stalker" imho.
No. It deserves less.
Bladerunner should definitely be on the list
@Crypto Pump
BR should be no.1 ... its far more influential than all on the list, even more influential than 2001 Odyssey ..... so many of sci fi movies are heavily influenced by it after it came out in 1982....
Here’s Mojo’s list, if you wanna just see their rankings:
20. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
19. Avatar (James Cameron)
18. Solaris (1972)
17. The Day the Earth Stood Still
16. Her
15. Mad Max: Fury Road
14. Planet of the Apes (Original)
13. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
12. Back to the Future
11. Inception
10. E.T.
9. Forbidden Planet
8. Children of Men
7. Aliens (1986)
6. Blade Runner (1982)
5. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
4. Metropolis
3. The Matrix
2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
I think any of these could very well be on this list IMO: Logan's Run? THX 1138? Sunshine? Silent Running? The 5th Element? Clockwork Orange? Stargate? Dark City? Them?
I also missed Logan´s Run
@@brigittewinklmayr8329 worth watching just for jenny and that micro whatever she was wearing
“Arrival” is by far my most favorite sci-fi movie of all time!! I can’t believe it didn’t make this list!!!!!
I think they forgot. Very emotional and beautiful movie
It's a well done picture, but absolutely unnecessary. I find Villeneuve quite pretentious, to be honest.
@@CATDHD
Yup, Villenueve is probably the most overrated director in recent time ... Arrival is rather cheesy frankly trying to be a tear jerker in the end ... most of Villeneuve's movies are pretentious at best ....
THE ARRRIVAL 1996 = ORIGINAL, CLASSIC
@@88feji I think the trend with Villeneuve i am noticing is as BR:2049 , he is marketed as a arthouse director who makes original and "art" movies. The longer the movie , the more meaningful it is, and that kind of sentiment. All of his charqacters are cardboards, lifeless and boring. Too long movies, too long shots.Tonally perfect movies, but absolutely terrible storywise and character wise.
You missed "Charly" (1968). It's different from all the others on your list for two things: 1) It is sci-fi with NO "effects work", and 2) Its star, Cliff Robertson, is the only actor to win a Best Actor Academy Award for a science fiction film.
Other honorable mentions: A Boy And His Dog, A Clockwork Orange, Predator, They Live, Armageddon, Total Recall, Robocop (the original), Moonraker.
How can you miss John carpenter (the thing)💔
Unpopular opinion: 2001 A Space Odyssey should not even be in the top 20, let alone #1. While 2/3 of the film is really intriguing, it completely falls apart in the end, with its super anticlimactic ending.
I think it's more that
1: It hasn't aged well.
2: The "apemen" in
the prehistoric segment
look ridiculous & fake.
3: Although there are some very
provocative, futuristic & almost
surreal ideas, the ending does
try to be so open to interpretation
that it ends up being too vague
& doesn't really say much of anything.
2001: A Space Odyssey should be on the list!
Dude, it was #1, finish the video. Why did this get 10 likes? Did they not finish the video either?
@@DJGamingSmash I was trying to get you to comment.
🤣
1 2001: A Space Odyssey
2 Blade Runner
3 Star Wars Original Trilogy
HOLY TRINITY
Where's Robocop?
I just realized that I didn't need all that equipment to put stuff into my sister's mind when she was sleeping-All I needed was my CASIO keyboard, a house full of air vents, and the Canadian National Anthem I learned to play. I made my sister dream that she was at a Hockey game! 🤣🤣🤣
I've come here to kick @ss and chew bubblegum....and I'm all out of bubblegum, They Live should've been on there somewhere lol
...& "The Hidden"
("Wrong composition.
Doesn't work on human flesh.").
Yeah and it is more reality than people think
We all know that Alien 1979 should be first.
at least in top five
'Omega Man' is unforgettable; one of the best 'last man on earth' movies ever!
And last man on earth with Vincent price will always be better. I own both but I’ve watched vinny’s at least 10’s more.
They better have “The Time Machine” (2002) on here, at least as an honorable mention.
yeah youre right a solid 5.9 on imdb should be on that list.
@@kamikazebider6160 Movie critic’s aren’t people, remember that now.
@@LoveHandle4890 5.9 isnt the critics' score but the audience's
@@astronomikidiaspasi1808 It would’ve been more popular, if it would’ve had more time travel and less drama tbh. Then again, the film is more popular now more than ever.
@@LoveHandle4890 Imdb arent movies critics , dont you know that ? remember that now.
There should be a Top 100 list for Sci-fi movies so that other influential and popular movies like Arrival, Ex-Machina, Everything, Everywhere All At Once, Guardians of the Galaxy, WALL-E, Total Recall, RoboCop, Starship Troopers, The Blob, Godzilla, Under the Skin, and so many others can be included.
My most favorite science fiction movies are:
‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day.’
‘Alien.’
‘Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope.’
‘Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back.’
‘The Terminator.’
‘Robocop.’
‘Preadator.’
‘The Matrix.’
‘Aliens.’
‘Inception.’
‘Blade Runner.’
1968’s ‘Planet of the Apes.’
‘Back to the Future.’
Great list, thanks for compiling!
Perhaps the list should be a bit longer? A top 40 or maybe 50? The original Invasion of The Body Snatchers was far better than the remake, just my opinion. The 1950s War of The Worlds will always belong in the top 10.
Some of the following fantastic SF films may be unknown to younger viewers. I would suggest a longer list, just to be complete.
Predator, The Andromeda Strain, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, The Thing, They Live, Lucy, Soylent Green, Stargate, The Fifth Element, Robocop, I saw Colossus: The Forbin Project at the Drive in - great SF, saw Alien at the theater with 2 other couples, I cannot overstate the shocked reaction of the entire audience, Charly, Destination Moon, The Edge of Tomorrow ( just a great SF film), The Brit Peter Cushing version of 1984 - best rendition of the book, Rod Taylor version The Time Machine, Fahrenheit 451, I am sure others will come up with more..
Many Honorable Mentions, 5 Million Years To Earth, Battle Los Angeles, Oblivion, Paycheck, Things to Come, The Incredible Shrinking Man, James Mason versions 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Journey to The Center of The Earth, Gravity - Sandra Bullock, Coneheads, Demolition Man..
Spaceballs was a movie of epic proportion that this world will never see again.
I brake for no one :
May the Schwartz be with you.
If you haven't seen Solaris, you really should watch it. Another good Tarkovsky movie is Stalker.
The newer Solaris with George Clooney can't come close to the 1972 Russian version. And Stalker is still one of my favorites. I see new facets each time I see it.
Agreed! I’d almost be tempted to add “Andrei Rublev” to the mix, only because Tarkovsky’s 15th Century depiction was so utterly alien, as to be Science Fiction. He was a beautiful, meditative stylist for the ages. Cheers!
Damn Akira didn’t even get an honorable mention??!? That’s one of the most impactful sci fi films of all time, especially in the way Japanese media is showed all over the world
Not a perfect but it's a pretty solid list ! I enjoyed watching it.
One of my favourites is Colossus: The Forbin Project. I've only seen it once, on TV back in the 70's. It made a big impression on me as I still remember it now.
One movie from the recent years that comes to mind is The Platform, a spanish movie. Definitely a masterpiece (not too sci-fi really, but still). Paints the essence of humanity's blindness in a very interesting allegorical way.
not sci-fi but a great movie, recently rewatched it which I never thought I would
The Platform is truly one of the most original masterpieces of the last decade!
Love that movie!
A really, really solid list. Well done.
There are lots of great sci-fi movies. That is why they still failed to list some other favorites like Arrival, Interstellar, and Minority Report.
All great!!!!
Interstellar is the best sci-fi movie of all times. It was left out your list. Unforgivable.
Prometheus: Ridley Scott. Noomi Rapace. Michael Fassbender. Idris Elba. Charlez Theron. In my opinion, a valid independent "successor" to Aliens. It explained the "space jockey", and why this version of the 'universe' came into being. The realism displayed in the set design and CGI are unlikely to be repeated in the near future.
Whereas the cast and crew were gold, the script was trash. In reality, the Alien franchise consists only of the first four movies (those containing Ripley and her clone). The rest is… bleh.
@@sneakyfox4651 The cast, set design, CGI and storyline more than made up for the fact that Ridley placed less importance on what was being said. In fact, the script added realism in the fact that much of it came from improvisation. All of Ridley's movies are about the visuals, going all the way back to Legend with Tom Cruise and Mia Sara.
Prometheus is garbage. The characters make the stupidest desicions ever, they lack common sense so much that at times it makes no sense.
@@diegorincon811 And yet they got paid. How much did you get paid for watching it? They lack common sense?
@@ndotl Nazis were paid as well, what's your point? I see now why you liked that movie, the characters are just as dumb as you are.
Dark City and The Thing deserved honorable mention!!!
The Matrix is essentially a remake of Dark City. Inception is a live-action version of Paprika.
The thing deserve be included in top five at least, this ranking is a joke...
I would’ve had 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on here
INTERSTELLER deserves an honorable mention. This is a really good list though. I would really struggle making this video because so many of these movies are so very entertaining.
Glad I wasn't the only one. Was expecting it to be #1 since it wasn't list or honorable mentions. Lame.
