I’d love to see these types of interviews for other artists as well, instead of the typical questions and the focus on gossip.

tu vas pas être déçu
Nolan est très certainement cultivé, mais il n'a pas vraiment pris de risque... chaque film qu'il a sélectionné pourrait être dans le TOP-10 de la décennie dans laquelle il a été tourné/projeté. que des choix très "consensuels" communément appréciés de tous comme des chefs-d'oeuvres ou des classiques, j'aurais aimé un peu plus d'audace et de radicalité, ou de surprise ^^...
En revanche c'est intéressant de voir qu'il connaît non seulement les films, mais quel chef-op' se cache derrière la caméra de chacun de ces films !
@@francoisbouchet9907oui clairement des choix vraiment mainstream que toute personne qui s’intéresse un peu au cinéma connaît MAIS effectivement derrière il se rappelle parfaitement des scènes de ces films, sait les analyser, connaît l’équipe technique…impressionnant

Je me rappelle de l’interview de Hugh jackman pour citer que lui vu que c’est récent, était étonné de la qualité des questions posées. Y’en a plein d’autres !

It doesn't get much better than Christopher Nolan talking about movies, in a video store. Absolutely excellent stuff, and such a joy to watch. He's so passionate and expressive about cinema. You can tell he pours all of that inspiration, detail and knowledge from cinema of the past into his own films. Truly one of the greatest auteurs of all time.
Agreed, this is absolute gold! I hope he does the same thing on his next press tour.
Would love to see Nolan together with Tarentino in a videostore setting like this. They both are walking cinemagraphy encyclopedias
I feel like Tarantino would be a little insufferable and wouldn't let Nolan talk that much. Tarantino is a great filmmaker and film historian, but he's not the most courteous or accommodating partner in stuff like this I wouldn't imagine.

J'aime bien le fait que la video tourne autour plus d'une discussion entre deux amis. On sent que Nolan est passionné comme Murphy mais en voyant la vidéo, j'avais l'impression de voir un ami qui conseille des films à un autre ami tout en lui donnant des anecdotes et en lui disant pourquoi il faut le voir, comme une discussion normale dans un video club. C'était vraiment cool comme video !

Joyous to watch their professional and personal friendship. It’s a shame a lot of people don’t realise Christopher and Cillian have collaborated on a lot of projects together for almost 20 years now. Nolan is easily one of the best working today and I watch anything he’s done and have been a fan of Cillian’s for over 20 years, long before his fame on Peaky Blinders

@@daviddevilliers2828 J'avoue que ça fait longtemps que je n'ai pas été "secouée" par un film français...je ne regarde pratiquement que des films étrangers, et depuis une vingtaine d'années, j'ai il faut bien le dire un véritable coup de coeur pour le cinéma asiatique, en particulier coréen où j'ai découvert des pépites...
Tout est dans le “certains” aucun intérêt cette comparaison étant donné que jusqu’à preuve du contraire chaque être humain est différent…!
Aussi pour percer le mystère si tu n’as pas pris de claque en regardant des films français depuis longtemps c’est sans doute car tu n’en regardes pas, tu le dis toi même.
@@julesbeautemps Je n'ai pas dit que je n'en regardais pas, simplement, et bien que je passe un bon moment, je ne suis pas subjuguée. Mais il y a des acteurs très talentueux et sympas, je pense à Duvauchelle, Civil, Quenard, je ne le nie pas. Mais simplement, j'avoue que je suis pas bouleversée. Et pourtant, il y a beaucoup de chefs-d'oeuvre français : "les yeux sans visage, la haine, le corbeau, les mariés de l'an II, que la bête meurt, la mariée était en noir, compartiment tueur, l'été meurtrier", je vous les cite en vrac, mais dernièrement, encore une fois, mes derniers coups de coeur vont aux films étrangers, asiatiques particulièrement, où j'ai découvert un souffle que je ne retrouve plus chez nous...le constat étant pire chez nos voisins italiens, dont j'ai adoré le cinéma aussi. Mais cela dit, tout est question de sensibilité. C'est mon ressenti.

I'm happy when Nolan talks about a film, he also never forgets to mention the scoring, and it seems he always amazes and focuses on the scoring of the film... that's why in each of his films he has very good sound design and is always intense...

Exactly, honestly it surprised me a bit even that he so admires more "edgy" innovative scores like Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and the Chernobyl score by Guonadottir because he tends to use somewhat more traditionalist orchestral scores (especially Zimmer, his newer work with Göransson is less traditional). I really want to see him do a film or two with a purely electronic or experimental score...

Chernobyl and even The Thin Red Line too... one of Hans' masterpieces... and even at Oppenheimer, even though he didn't work with Hans, but with Ludwig, , and Ludwig can deliver a soundtrack that really blends with Oppenheimer.. absolutely Genius NOLAN...
if you read "The Nolan Variations," a book on his films written by Tom Shone, there's a passage where he writes about (and Nolan talks about) Nolan's experience in boarding school. Essentially he'd spend hours just listening to film soundtracks on his walkman: "The way in which our escapes worked was you would listen to music and your imagination would have to fill in the blanks. Film scores leave a bit of space for the pictures and for your imagination. It gave me a bit more space to think, more like ambient music, I suppose. I certainly prized the imaginative space of listening to music in the dark, thinking about things, imagining things, films, stories. That was very important to me."
Basically, film scores became one of the central experiences of his adolescence, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the things he's most focused on as a filmmaker.
He recognizes the importance of music in storytelling, just like acting, lighting, and so on.
This is a great interview. You could see Cillian and Nolan really enjoy this. They might even have forgotten, for a moment, that they were being filmed.

This makes it so direct that Nolan is vastly educated, experienced and well knowledgeable about the entire concept of filming, script, playwright, novelization.., almost everything. A man who has more than proven enough already that there are only a very few who immerse themselves into their art and science of entertainment. Wow

Journey To The Lime.... People lose it when they go sycophantic about "Time", and I have to remind them it is the true definition of "Derivative", and the only reason it can't be called plagiarism is because it's his own work. I love Zimmer, his Sound Book for Dune is a masterpiece of music in it's own right. But when he works with Nolan, he is used as more of a utilitarian, and there is nothing wrong with that, but too call it "inspired" is a stretch.

I keep coming back to this interview 4 months after its release. I just love listening to Cillian and Nolan talk about film. They speak so passionately and it feels like they are just fans of films. They are so humble that you don't feel like they also make incredible films and are one of the best modern director-actor duos...
When Nolan talks about the score for The Thin Red Line @ 9:40, I just completely lost myself in his speech and the score started playing in the background, the editor is a genius, it was a transcendental experience.

Étant un passionné de cinéma, j’ai vu la moitié des films conseillés, et franchement, c’est du très très lourd. Des pièces maîtresses à voir à tout prix.
je ne regarde pas beaucoup de films et je n'y connais rien au cinéma mais c'est toujours génial d'entendre des gens aussi passionés parler de leur métier et des choses qui les inspirent. je pense que ce genre de personnes ne serait pas méprisant envers quelqu'un comme moi qui n'a pas de culture cinématographique, mais plutôt du genre à expliquer les choses de manière très bienveillante. parfois le mépris des cinéphiles m'intimide beaucoup parce que si tu as pas vu tel ou tel film tu as raté ta vie, mais des gens comme cillian murphy et christopher nolan ont l'effet inverse; ils donnent envie de s'intéresser au cinéma et de regarder plus de films!

Je ne suis absolument pas fan du cinéma de Nolan, j'ai vu tous ses films pourtant. Mais j'adore ce style de vidéos où on découvre ces cinéastes/acteurs dans leur quotidien de cinéphile. Nolan a évidemment une grande connaissance du cinéma, techniquement c'est impressionnant, je n'arrive pas à comprendre pourquoi son cinéma est aussi explicatif et dans la surenchère de dialogues quand il a l'air d'adorer le cinéma muet!
J'ai vu tous les films mentionnés ici et franchement "Les rapaces" entre autres, quel chef d'oeuvre.
