THE PROPOSITION (2005) 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW

  • John Hillcoat's Australian outback take on the American Western genre featuring a fabulous cast including Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, John Hurt and Emily Watson. Extremely violent and at times gory. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1 and sound is DTS HD 5.1.
    The reason I decided to do a full review of this rather obscure title is because the image quality from the fine grain Kodak Vision 2 Super 35 negative is so good. It was extremely good on the 2006 DVD too so it's just one of those films that has always looked great.
    Another great 4K release from the British Film Institute that first went on sale in April 2022.

    Fantastic review! Thanks John. I love this 4k set, it is one of the favourites in my collection. Ray Winstone is excellent in it. The shots of the Australian outback are a marvel and I was really impressed by the sound. A truly great release from the BFI.

      Evening James. It's such a shame this film isn't better known than it is. Everyone involved in making it or appearing in it seems to have nothing but good memories and good things to say about it but since this 4K appeared in special edition form (April 2022 I think) it's consistently been languishing on shelves in every branch of HMV I can remember. And I've been in quite a few during that time. That's probably a sign that it doesn't seem to have sold well now that I've had time to think about it.
      John.

    Put off watching this video until now. Went out for lunch last Sunday and as I always do, popped into the local CEX store for a nosey. I picked up the special edition of this for 12 quid. Absolutely immaculate. Anyway, got round to watching it last night and thought it looked and sounded fantastic. Some of the set pieces were stunningly gorgeous. Once again, cheers for the video and hope you're well. Bob.

      I've been a bit the same with this film Richard as it has always taken a bit of working up to in order to put it on. But this time around on this 4K disc through a modern, budget home video projector on the home cinema screen it was truly like being back in the 1990's cinema heyday. And that book that comes with this 4K has some very good information in it. I haven't got through it all yet but I think the opening section written by the director is extremely interesting. Don't stay up too late though!

      I suppose distributors shied away from it so it only got a limited release and possibly not in all territories. I have that same edition John and watched it some months back. I agree with you. BFI produce some beautifully cinematic 4k movies. Get Carter was equally good. Great review as always. I wish more reviewers rated cinematic quality over clear and smooth hi-def pictures which just don’t look like film. I suppose it’s best represented in older films.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +2

      Film stocks and particularly negative stocks are such fine grain now and have been for more than 35 years for a lot of productions so it is easy to get confused and think that because a film in the 1960's was grainy then all films should look the same. Some cinematographers and directors wanted a grainy look so they have deliberately chosen more coarse grain negative stocks down the years but some choose the finest stock available and from the late 1980's/early 1990's there was no shortage of choice. The Proposition appears to be one of the finest Kodak Vision 2 T100 to T500 productions judging from both the DVD and the 4K. A 35mm print would confirm it though. John.

      Thank you Erik. I wanted to make the point that it caused me to make the analogy to the quality of the screenings we used to consistently enjoy at The Empire until the later 1990's and some during the early 2000's before it all went to crap everywhere. We are rather enjoying our little home cinema more and more now that the bottom masking is working and I can operate everything from my chair... until I put a real film print on of course. John.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад

      I've just had a look at the discs James and the Blu-ray has Zone B printed on the face whereas the 4K disc does not. 2001 is probably still up there with some of the best but much of it appears to be a dupe negative. That's to be expected as it had more 70mm prints struck from it than any other film in history I believe so that original negative was somewhat knackered. To see the best from a 65mm shoot take a look at Murder on the Orient Express. John.

    Good review John, and tempted me to go watch this film. I enjoyed ‘American Graffiti’ on 4K over Christmas, but disappointed Cameron refuses to release Abyss 4K in U.K. because of censor’s insistence on deletion of the ‘rat breathing liquid scene’. May import a US copy if I can or pick up a copy next time in US. Happy New Year!

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +1

      Morning George. I think the situation with The Abyss is that the BBFC have not relented on their insistence on a few seconds of cuts to the rat fluid breathing sequence as adopted in 1989 and to get them to re-evaluate it today would require re-submitting the film for a new classification. In other words, money! The alternative would be to create a second version of the 4K disc just for the UK market so neither option may be viable but if it sells well in the USA perhaps it will get a release here later on. The trouble is that so many people get hot under the collar about minor cuts to films that I fear there would be a concerted effort to destroy sales even though if they saw both versions they'd be hard pushed to justify any reason not to want to see the one that is a few seconds shorter. I've actually had one or two message me recently to tell me they have the DVD and the problematic sequence is in there. Well yes, it is. It's just slightly shorter. It just goes to show though that people hear about a cut and assume the whole scene is gone. It makes no soddin' difference to the overall film!
      I have The Abyss on Super 8 so I'm not bothered. I ran it a couple of months ago and it's beautiful. 30 years old and looks as good as the day it was printed.

      Interesting thoughts John. I’d heard it was more black and white than that. Disney were OK with complying with UK regulators but Cameron is absolutely rigid on not making any changes - Cameron wins out as he carries ‘clout’! Disney (desperate for funds to backfill the black hole created by their plethora of woke ‘flops’) lose. Guessing U.K. market is very small (cf US), so not a big deal at the end of the day, however remember that Disney have withdrawn from physical media sales in many countries like Australia. Wondering if streaming content will be edited for country-allowed content (e.g. specific UK Abyss on Disney + or on-line rental from Apple or Amazon)? Pleased you have your original film….i don’t have that luxury and am actually downsizing/curating my discs (too many) - quite a difficult job, but don’t want to have yet more racking/shelving/storage. I have ripped all my TV series discs to NAS, so keep those discs in ‘really useful storage’ boxes in loft (all my CDs are stored in the loft already).

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад

      35mm probably would include Jaws and I suspect it's as good as it is because it was transferred at around 5.6K so more like what is required for a full frame anamorphic 35mm. Apocalypse Now is pretty sensational too and particularly when you consider it had to be done from the interpositive (next step down from original negative). I'm not sure what the third would be but there have been some very good ones and some are probably quite obscure like this Super 35 production of The Proposition.
      70mm is a bit of a more problematic choice because IMAX 70mm is three times the size of standard 70mm. In that regard, the best are TENET, DUNKIRK and probably OPPENHEIMER but INTERSTELLAR won't be too far off. Best standard 70mm is MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS but then there are a whole load of other older 70mm productions and also VistaVision and Super Technirama etc. etc. etc. Have a look at my top ten 4K discs video to get a better idea of how I judge all these various formats. Best video to 4K is probably Le Mans '66 but possibly Top Gun: Maverick.

    Regarding HDR blowout you mentioned, your Panasonic 820 doesn’t have the 2 projector presets under HDR display type that the 9000 comes with. This will give you the correct tone mapping options and retain both the specular highlight and low level details you sometimes mention. It all comes down to how the movie’s HDR is mastered but the dynamic tone mapping should take care of discs mastered at a range of brightness levels. A local Richer Sounds would I’m sure let you test one with your setup to confirm it.
    Once we had our 820 calibrated with our OLED, we never have to touch the HDR setting just leave it set to on. Just a suggestion.

      The HDR adjustments often required don't bother me, it's all part of the fun. I just try to make others aware that it could be buggering up the image quality on their system. However, it's never so much of an issue on my telly so I expect it's the same with tellies in general. Projecting seems a little different but I think it's to be expected as it's a completely different thing. But there's nothing wrong with just checking first because even on a telly little changes can made a big difference to the enjoyment of a film. John.

      I would review the Columbia Classics releases if I could justify the expense but the cost against home many views a review video would get doesn't add up. The next one has John Carpenter's Starman in the box so of all of them so far, that box has been the most tempting. But I can't afford it so that's the end of that.
      Putting music into any video can be problematic. Even music for which I've purchased a licence from Smartsound. I no longer even try owing to all the hassle it causes. The last one took a month to sort out and only because the buggers who were trying to steal any advertising money from my work would not respond to me disputing their fraudulent claim. RUclips seem to put up with these creeps but I suppose it would require them to prosecute these organizations and people themselves and that would cost a lot in time and money.
      Next review video will be The Creator. One of the worst image quality 4K discs I've seen but I haven't finished checking every possibility yet to try to put it right.

It amazes me how much better even the lower quality 35mm films are compared to most of the movies shot on digital video these days. You'd think things would have moved on a level or two by now but I suppose it's the continual cost of upgrading multi-tens of thousands of pounds of equipment that's the obstacle whereas with film it was the film stock that kept getting the upgrades that constantly improved the end results. Especially the picture enhancement tools, which he says overly sharpens the picture and makes images look artificial, which absolutely does not surprise me. I already go to friend or client homes and see the advanced motion smoothing turned on ruining the picture. This will be a further removal of director's intent. Imagine a picture wiped with DNR like American Graffiti and then pumped with AI enhancement? That picture for me will be a lost movie. Joe

    • @moviecollector5920

      American Graffiti didn't suffer from image noise reduction in here Joe but that's quite possibly down to a television experience and a projection to a reasonable size. The film grain is there but I should have looked at it more closely on my telly as that was my first impression, the film grain had been removed. I was pleased to be wrong and just see a beautiful looking TechniScope image with fine film grain. I don't know if this is how master prints in 1973 would have looked but probably not now that I think about it because positive film stocks tended to have a more coarse grain appearance than negative stocks. It was one of the most impressive projections of a 4K disc I saw last year. But you do need to understand the detail most expect from a film to video transfer was never there in the first place. Think 16mm and you're almost there. I do think a lot of the perceived problems people are having is down to all the digital 'enhancements' on tellies. Every time I seem to look at my telly something else has turned itself on whereas I've always turned everything off or minimized it. They're basically computers and full of bugs. John.
