DJANGO 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW + CREEPSHOW & HOME CINEMA UPDATES

- Опубликовано: 9 июл 2024
- Review of the 4K UHD home movie release of Sergio Corbucci's 1966 'Django' starring Franco Nero. There is no HDR on this disc but does it really need it? There is no Blu-ray in the pack to compare it against but the colour and density are all good so perhaps the rules that applied to the recent 4K disc release of 'The Others' (no HDR on that one and it is perceptibly superior to the Blu-ray) also applies to 'Django'.
Image aspect ratio is 1.66:1. Sound is two channel mono. A limited edition release complete with an interesting and informative book all about the film which can be purchased direct from the releasing company Cult Films at cultfilms.co.uk/product/djang... or also from HMV if in the UK at hmv.com/store/film-tv/4k-ultr... At the time of typing the cost is £29.
Also included in this video is an update of Series 4 of 'Creepshow' on Blu-ray which follows on in impeccable style from the first three series and also released by Acorn Media International to make a fine box set release for 2023 which can be found in most branches of HMV or from their web site for £79.99: hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ray... with series 4 being available seperately here for £19.99: hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ray...
Finally, thanks to Mark Stuckey I now have motorized, fully adjustable bottom masking in our home cinema. Кино
Just subbed to your channel sir. Love your 4K reviews. I enjoy your calm and well spoken demeanor.
Good to have you here. Nice 1989 Batman shirt by the way. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Thank you very much. Keep up the fantastic work.
Evening John, another stellar review of an interesting 4k edition, love watching westerns, looks I'll be adding to my collection 😊
It's a nice package Marty and I think it makes a difference to the overall enjoyment of watching the film. I didn't expect to enjoy it quite as much as I did. John.
Great review John always look forward to your videos .
Thank you Paul. John.
The US Arrow release of Django in 4K comes with HDR10 and Dolby Vision and it looks absolutely brilliant.
Send it over! John.
I'm based in the UK and have a copy, happy to share it!@@moviecollector5920
Thanks John for Review.
You're welcome Craig. John.
Hey John! Thanks for the review! Unless I hear differently, I think I'm going to go for importing the US Arrow 4K edition of Django, which is definitely scanned from the original negative, rather than the CultFilms release which doesn't sound like it's from the same source, judging by the word salad they've used to describe it! There was a similar issue with CultFilms and Dario Argento's Suspiria where they released a strangely green-hued 4K 'restoration', while Synapse, in the USA, did a 4K restoration from the negative with oversight from the cinematographer. It looks incredible. The Synapse restoration of Suspiria is actually available on Blu-ray in Italy, so I imported that one until I can get my hands on the US Synapse 4K.
I didn't mind the dubbing in Django. I usually accept the 'rubber lips' on Italian films, given they're almost always post-synced anyway. That said, I watched an excellent Arrow release of a 1970s Italian police thriller (poliziottesco) the other day called The Big Racket. I unintentionally put on the Italian track and since it's an Italian film set in Italy with a mostly Italian cast, speaking Italian, I stuck with it. When it's one of those Italian co-productions with an international cast, where actors from all over the world are clearly speaking their lines in whatever their own language is, I usually go for the English. The Big Racket is directed by Enzo G Castellari (who made the original Inglorious Bastards and appeared in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds). It's a terrific action thriller staring Fabio Testi, a former stuntman, who bears a striking resemblance to a young Sean Connery. Lots of great action scenes, a good, if slightly silly plot, marred by a couple of instances of excessive sexual violence. In many ways, it reminded me of The Sweeney from the same era, funnily enough.
I'm planning on getting the Creepshow discs with some Christmas money! I hadn't heard about the series, although I love the original two movies, so I can't wait to see these. Anyway, Merry Christmas and thanks for all your videos this year. I've learnt a lot from your channel! Dominic Husband 🙂
Morning Dom. It's been confirmed on here that the Cult Films 'Django' is from the camera negative. Arrow Films did apply HDR though so it would be an interesting comparison. Looking at this Cult Films disc I'd have assumed it did have HDR but I always press the HDR button first to check which setting looks best and that told me it wasn't present. Does it need it, possibly not judging by the evidence of my eyes. But if I ever see the Arrow Films variation of the same cine to video transfer I'll happily be proved wrong.
I forgot to say that I think the four series of Creepshow are even better than the two films so you should enjoy them. Some stories are a little below par but on the whole they're great fun with some being stone cold classics.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 Hi John! That's great to know about the Django disc! I've had an iTunes version for ages while waiting for a physical release. I'll buy the CultFilms version now! What a strange way for them to describe the elements though!!
Looking even more forward to Creepshow now then! I love that style of horror as much as I love the really dark type of supernatural horror in the likes of the (very uneven) Conjuring series. It's slashers that I've never been all that big on outside of the Elm Streets, which are offset by the supernatural fantasy dream landscapes and Friday the 13ths, because they so frequently veer into self parody!
good evening, I have a question to ask you. Can the English subtitles present during the Italian audio track be removed?
I can't remember now Valerio. I would expect that to be a function. John.
I need to seek this movie out as I have never watched it. Another great review. Good show in pointing out that some of the artifacts are just the way the film was shot. Thumbs up!
This package from Cult Films probably enhances the enjoyment of the film Henri as it makes you feel like you've purchased something rather special. I think it's their first 4K disc release. John.
@@moviecollector5920 You convinced me to splurge and ship it across the pond. A belated Chanukah gift for myself.
@@hblanche I hope you like it as much as I do Henri. Apparently Arrow Films have a 4K release in the USA and that has HDR so if you haven't ordered the Cult Films yet (which is probably a better package) then it might be worth looking for the Arrow disc. I wish I'd have known this when I recorded this video.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 Too late! However, I'm sure the cult films version will be fine and like you said, it has very nice packaging.
@@moviecollector5920 Received the package today and immediately watched the film. I liked it; and I also enjoyed all the extras included with the box set. I will probably never know the difference between this 4K version of the film and the American one as I will almost certainly not double dip. Nonetheless I do not regret my purchase and thank you for pointing this out to me.
Love Django, Massacre Time, Texas Adios.
I'd never seen it before Joseph. What a great way to see this one for the first time though and what a great pack for us home movie collectors. A classic in every way.
John.
I just wanna say the 4k release did get a blu ray release recently. You can pick up the 3 disc set that has two films included called keoma and a bullet for the general.
Thank you Numaan. Arrow Films had the licence for Django in other territories so perhaps it's that release. Arrow also had high dynamic range mastered and applied so it would be interesting to see how the two alternatives compare. I didn't think this Cult Films version needed HDR because it was so good but that opinion might change if I ever see the Arrow 4K. John.
Watched Dead Zone today. A Shout Factory release in the States. Great movie, great presentation, highly recommended.
If that's the Christopher Walken film then I hope it will get a release over here sometime. Haven't seen it for years.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 It is and it’s still great!
@@moviecollector5920Definitely worth an import.
Great review of Django John. I'm a massive Spaghetti Western fan (plan on a book about them at some point). The dubbing is fun. Italians at the time post dubbed everything. No sound on set (apart from perhaps Leone who often had Morricone's score (already written) playing as he shot). It used to faze a few of the Hollywood actors as they would be filming their scenes and the crew would be playing football off screen. Given that they tended to be multinational productions, each actor would speak their native tongue and be dubbed later. It is one reason why these films often had hyper exaggerated sound effects. Which add to the atmosphere. Django spawned a load of other films with Django in the title - often having nothing to do with this original film. There is a genuine sequel to the original Django, again staring Nero, called 'Django Strikes Again' 1987 and Nero played a priest in the recent TV series 'Django'. That was not brilliant and had nothing really to do with the film apart from taking the name and a few image references. By the way. One of the so called sequels to Django is rather good - also got banned due to violence - 'Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot!' - didn't spaghetti westerns have brilliant titles. Now that is a cynical, dark, surreal film. It stars the wonderful Tomas Milian and I love it. If you like Nero is spaghetti westerns you could try 'Keoma' 1976 I love that as well but some may be put off by the Leonard Cohen rip off sound track but I like it. Aren't we lucky to be able to access these films in such quality these days rather than the awful, many generation away, pan and scanned, VHS copies, if we were lucky.
I agree with you about being able to see these films in such wonderful quality at home Chris. Neither of us would ever have thought it possible. Thank you for confirming so many other details too. If you do a book on spaghetti westerns I'll have the first one off the press! While I can't see myself suddenly watching a whole load of them if others come out as 4K discs with similar quality to this one then I'll get some or all of those. The complete package for this release of 'Django' helped to make it extra special. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much as I did but Susie really enjoyed it too.
John.
Another heart-warming and illuminating video from the *Master Collector* - John.
I hope to see you review some of, if not all of, the new 4K discs of James Cameron's films coming out before Christmas.
The Abyss and True Lies, I believe, have never been released on any later video format than DVD.
Erik.
The Abyss was a Super 8 feature Erik so up to now that's been the best available quality release. But I have it on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD too. It should make for a fun 4K review but I don't know if I'll watch the whole disc as I only watched the Super 8 two weekends back. John.
@@moviecollector5920 I watched The Abyss in 70mm blow-up at the Cinematheque in Oslo two times in October, and I wouldn't want to watch that film (or _any_ film for that matter) any other way, so I guess I know what you're getting at. But still, I suspect it would be informative to see what the Movie Collector thinks of these new 4K discs of James Cameron's films.
Great review as usual John. I'm hoping to get a 4k projector and a screen next year. I was thinking about sound. I live in a block of flats and letting sub woofers etc rip would be an issue. Can you do sound through headphones with a cinema setup? What are the options? Maybe a video possibility?
Headphones can be very good for getting good volume in a flat without upsetting the neighbours but perhaps a reasonable quality pair of stereo speakers and position them just to the left and right of where you sit would be a preferable option most of the time. Wearing headphones can be a little frustrating if used all the time. Close speakers don't have to be anywhere near as loud. And paint a wall rather than buy a screen cos' it's much cheaper and just as good if not better.
John.
Great job as always John....... Happy Christmas!
Thank you Roy. And a merry Christmas to you too... but I do hope to get a year in review video out next week if I can. A lot has gone on this year so it might make for an interesting overall look to put the most interesting things all together. IMAX visits, home cinema build, film collector conventions, a visit from Trevor of Double Bill Movies and now finally to get that pesky bottom masking automated.
John.
Another intelligent and fun review sir, I really enjoy all your videos. Beautiful Cinema room too.
Thank you Kenny. John.
Just seeing the name of your vidéo was enough to put the score in my head….Djaaaangooooo Djaaangooooo 😊
It's is a very catchy tune. The lyrics are pretty easy to remember too... well, one of the words anyway. John.
I see that you've found something to cover besides Point Break. I've been thinking about that, BTW. Maybe you can import it.
The cost of importing discs is prohibitive Timothy so I can't do it very often. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Understood. It was just a thought. Have you seen the Die Hard 4k yet? I think I would like to get my hands on it at some point.
great as always
Thank you Philip. John.
This was a restoration by from the original negative:
“The restoration of Django was made by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and by Surf Film, from a 4K scan of the original camera negative and from the Italian sound negative. The restoration was carried out in 2018 at L’Immagine Ritrovata”.
Very welcome information Carl. I thought it would have been the original negative but without the information stated correctly on the box I couldn't just assume that. A very nice looking film shrunk onto a video disc. It's just like having your own 35mm print. John.
Agree 100% needs to be watched in italian with subtitles. It seems so cheap and cheesy with the english dub
That's a good choice of words to sum it up there M C. Thank you. John.
Great video John. Probably not one I'll pick up for a while but eventually it'll probably end up in the collection. I look forward to the next video and holiday greetings in case the next one comes out after
Evening Darren. One thing I meant to mention was that there is a number on the top of this box which suggests it's limited and CultFilms do say something like that on their web site. I expect a standard release will come out sometime though but possibly something to keep in mind.
Hopefully I'll get another video out next week. A round up of the year sort of thing.
John.
Nice episode. Did you straightened the screen? I remember that you skew it a bit because the projector wasnt direct with the screen.
You're looking at a painted wall behind me David. The screen will go back into service in the living room sometime. Might put the 35mm projector in there for that but I'm not sure yet. Have a look at the videos from a few months ago which were one about the home cinema build and then a home cinema tour to see how all the changes were done.
John.
Thank you John.
Well done Cheekster. John.
Hi if there was an oscar for best movie review er you would win it ❤
Very kind of you Philip. The way the American Academy Awards have gone lately I think I'd prefer a BAFTA or just about anything else really. After the fiasco of last year I think it may be time to call it a day on the Oscars. Hopefully things will improve from now on. John.
Hi John! Again i'm giggling because here we go again having watched films for so long and in mid 50s heres yet another gem I havn't seen. Imagine that lolololo I simply must see this film I know I'll enjoy it !! Like others here I can't wait for your year end video it's gonna be expected now lolololol Meantime gonna review last years year end list and recap check on which ones i've picked up myself from it and witch ones i've missed just to see .. Had an amazing time visiting Trevor's Double Bill live stream this morning was a fun chat so all the best and have a great weekend! Dave in BC!!
I need to look at last year's end of year video myself Dave. I remember I just set the camera up in front of the shelves and started waffling but it seemed to work so I'll have to do the same thing. But before then I want to do a recap of everything that's gone on this year besides disc releases because it's been rather busy and quite successful in terms of getting our home cinema sorted.
I was surprising by how much I enjoyed Django. Arrow Films have done a 4K release which is available in the USA and it has HDR and Dolby Vision so may be worth looking at that one. It seems that Cult Films snagged the rights to the film over here.
John.
You’ll live reservoir dogs on 4k. Immaculate
Never seen Reservoir Dogs. I nearly purchased it earlier this year though so there's still hope. John.
@@moviecollector5920Strongly recommended. I actually first saw it when I was 8 years old whilst having a haircut at my barber shop. He had the film on American video😂
@@spaceodds1985 I remember The Silence of the Lambs playing on a bus ride in Colorado back in 1996. And we think the western world has gone crazy these days! John.

Morning John. I didn't expect to enjoy this one quite as much as I did and Susie felt the same. I think the package as a whole helps in that regard because it does make the whole thing feel more special.
John.
I love spaghetti westerns, i got Django in 4K it looks great. Great Review. You're movie screen masking is great just like the one at the movie theater.
I plan to show how that bottom mask works in the next video Wayne. It's a new solution which I haven't seen anyone else employ so may be a first. It took Mark Stuckey to get it sorted though as I made an ID10T (i.e. idiot!) error trying to wire everything up.
John.
Great review John :)
I really enjoy spaghetti western and recognize this film so it's possible that I have seen this film many years ago. I don't like subtitles but maybe it's a good idea to watch the original Italian version if it's a badly dubbed film.
It's been confirmed on here that the Italians shot without sound so it was all done afterwards. Apparently just about all the spaghetti westerns, if not all, were done this way. The subtitles are a welcome distraction from the rubber lips but also the dubbed English sound does not have suitable voices so rather ruins the feel of the movie. Other opinions are available no doubt!
John.
Well done, again. I did watch Hunter ,Killer. I really liked the movie even though it got terrible reviews. The picture is outstanding and the audio is not to be missed. For those with Atmos lots of overhead action. I did change my Panasonic from standard to natural as the picture was a little dark and that helped. Let me know if your opinion if you watch.
I haven't looked at that disc for a while Gary, probably three years. I need to find the time to watch more movies but because I just won't watch them on a telly any longer it does limit the possibilities. I might stick a LaserDisc on through the telly shortly if there's enough time as that's something I'm trying to get back into and they don't exactly look brilliant projected ten feet wide. I did enjoy Hunter Killer when I watched it and being a modern action flick I don't doubt the sound is impressive. I just wish I could remember that aspect better than I do.
John.
@@moviecollector5920 You and your laserdisc and I have a 300 disc Pioneer dvd changer that I still use.
Nice one John. Never been a fan of subtitles myself as it constantly takes your eye away from the images. Usually settle for the sub par English dub for this reason. Controversial? Nah.
I think this one would drive you nuts. I couldn't take it and after about two minutes had to switch to the original Italian. See what you think if you get a copy of Django sometime. John.
Great review thanks...thinking about best releases of the year have you seen Barbie 😂 i really thought i would hate it but its hilarious ! So my two top movies are chalk and cheese or Oppenheimer then Barbie 😮
No, I haven't seen Barbie Ellis. I might do one day... once I'm in a care home and have no say in what is playing! Seriously though, it could be that if I do ever see it that it's nowhere near as bad as it looks. John.
salut bonne vidèo sur la revue du film comme toujour
Merci Alain. John.
I loved this film and have the arrow 4K set with Texas adios. It’s a great film I watch along with deadlock. I find it a more engaging story than a fistful of dollars but the direction for fist is such a master work it makes up for the storytelling pits.
I’d say texas adios is the worst of the ones I’ve seen so far but the scope from that was great to see.
Recently picked up young guns on 4K so I’m hyped to see that.
I haven't seen Young Guns since its first VHS release so I might have to purchase a copy when it appears over here. I think it's getting a release on 4K in the new year. I haven't seen A Fistful of Dollars in a long time either and have never managed to get all the way through The Good The Bad & The Ugly. I'm sure I will when I finally get to see it again but as a youngster it was always on the telly so late and had an almost hypnotic quality to it so I was zonko every time. John.
I've never seen this one. they show it on TV frequently. think I'll check it out next time.
It's worth a look if it does come on but I think this overall pack from Cult Films adds a little something to the enjoyment of the film. It makes it feel that little bit more special perhaps. John.
I bought Django on 4k last year but bought it again this year due to the box set including goodies. I wasn't happy when I received it on Monday 11th Dec as there seemed to be ink stains on the cardboard sleeve that couldn't be removed. I returned it and received a replacement but the same ink stains are present. I've let Arrow Media know the issue but I don't think they will fix it.
I nearly came out of retirment to make a RUclips video on my channel just to rant because of this!
I think this one has some sort of staining pattern on it too Terry. Could it be it's something to do with the original marketing of the film to try to give it an aged look? John.
Look forward to your Top 10 4K UHD Blu-ray releases of 2023 video John.
Hopefully after Christmas and before New Year. John.
@@moviecollector5920 I’m already counting down the days…
Good review, John
Django is a movie I've always wanted to like, but could never really get into. Maybe because I grew up on the Man With No Name Trilogy and got spoiled with the best possible versions of Spaghetti Westerns.
You can dress Franco Nero up like a cowboy, but he lacks the cool badass authority that just comes naturally to Clint Eastwood.
That's a handsome looking set though.
I think this set does enhance the film. If it were just a stream or a television broadcast I don't think I would have got so much out of it but it's everything that goes with a special edition disc release. John.
Hello John, can the film be purchase from the USA?
Apparently Arrow Films have a 4K with HDR and Dolby Vision available in the USA David. I suppose Cult Films secured the rights here in the UK as the Arrow disc isn't for sale here. I wish I'd have known all this prior to making this video. John.
My 3rd 4K uhd set
And a rather special one too Mark. I think that overall package enhances the enjoyment of the film because it makes you feel like you've purchased something special, which we have. John.
Restoration of Django is from a 4K scan of the original camera negative by Arrow Video - Cult films used this arrow restoration and added to some minor tweaks to the image for their release
Thank you for the information Paul. It would be interesting to see if there's a perceptible difference between the Arrow disc with HDR and the Cult Films disc without and which one appears to give the better results. John.
damn, for a split second I thought you had some secret copy of Django Unchained on 4k Blu-ray...
I expect the Quentin Tarantino appreciation of this 1966 film is why it's come back on the radar so much in recent years. I'd never seen it nor heard much about it before. John.
No HDR odd there is a UK release of that film with HDR10 and the US Arrow video has Dolby vision.
I didn't know there was a previous UK release of this one Jesse. I'll have to look it up. John.

Hi John. Since you're interested in the Creepshow series, may I recommend hunting down the American series: Tales From The Crypt. It was a series of horror stories that ran on HBO (Home Box Office) for seven seasons. ✌🏻🇺🇸
I don't think I've ever come across that one Red. I'll lookout for a Blu-ray and maybe give it a try sometime. I rarely get the time for series now though and even though Creepshow is only six episodes in each series I seem to take forever to get through them. Next up is series 3 of Star Trek Picard so I'll try to get through that one more quickly. John.
Would you consider reviewing the Cannibal Holocaust 4K ? One of my favourites.
Nope! Saw that in the south of France back when it was on general release Finlay and I don't ever want to see it again. A memorable, historic film but bloody hell... how did anyone ever dream that up?

@@spaceodds1985 Fortunately I can't remember that particular scene but I do remember the shocking nature of it overall. The idea of finding the 8mm or 16mm films the expedition had shot seemed inspired to me at the time but it was only the very final shot that confirmed it had been faked and wasn't a snuff movie. I don't think we had english subtitles to tell us what was going on given we watched in France. We didn't know anything about the film going into it so didn't know that it had been banned from the UK at the time. We could see why once we got through it. I think I was 14 then. John.
Maybe I came to the Django party a bit late, sure, it's a good film, however I defy anyone to watch the Sartana box set from Arrow and not find each of those films getting more absurd and OTT as you watch each film in order. Nothing wrong with Django, but for me the Sartana films are where its at!
I think the only other spaghetti westerns I can remember seeing besides a few of the Sergio Leone films is the Trinity series. Never seen any of the Sartana titles. John.
@moviecollector5920 oh my! I strongly recommend the Arrow Sartana box set. It's about £25 for The Complete Sartana box set. Watch them in order, each gets more audacious and OTT until the last film which has a GLORIOUS end setpiece that's just ludicrous! My favourite is the third film, Sartana's Here...Trade Your Pistol For A Coffin. See? Even the titles are OTT!
@moviecollector5920 I should add too John, if you go ahead and give the box set a try, go in totally blind. Don't risk spoiling any of the action and surprises. Buy the box set, read nothing, look at nothing, insert the first disc, hit play and off you go for maximum effect! Original audio tracks and subtitles by the way, please! 😊

Great review. Imported the Arrow edition from the US a few years back. Really nice quality, mind you the scratches are unavoidable. As for the sound, honestly it needs the Italian soundtrack because the English dub is atrocious.
I endured the english dub for about two minutes and that was enough so we feel the same about that aspect of the film. I was surprised that the pop-up menu didn't give the option to switch soundtracks but only being a couple of minutes in meant it didn't really matter. John.
