Once Upon a Time in the West is one of my favorite all time films so, as soon as it was available to pre-order the 4K, I was there! Super jealous that you’ve got this in your hands early but grateful as always for all the review work you do for the community!

Just watched my copy. Wow, the picture was amazing. The audio was great as well. I thank Scorsese for overseeing this transfer, I hope he does the same thing for Once Upon America next. Absolutely beautiful.

I would suggest that as always, check the playback on your discs when you receive them. My copy of the film had issues at the 1 hour 16 minute mark. The film froze and skipped. I ejected the disc and gently used a clean lens cloth to ensure there was no dust then played it on multiple players with the same issues. I did notice there were quite a few physical knicks on the 4K disc where the blu-ray was pristine.
I went ahead and started the replacement process on Amazon where I ordered it and hopefully, I’ll have better luck with the next copy.

That Blu-ray version never sat well with me. It just seemed off. Looking at the side by side with the 4K gets a wow from me. Looks amazing. The blue in Henry Fonda's eyes just pops from the image like Sergio Leone intended. This is one of the greatest movies ever made. Must buy for me.

Just grabbed a copy! I was just thinking how many people get upset over "no Atmos", but in cases like this film (originally in mono), it's a technical miracle that we now have this in 5.1!!! Can't wait to receive it!!! Thanks again James!

Great job James! We all really need to stop listening to the mindless mob that says nothing but negative things. I mean negative for good reason is one thing, but when it’s routinely w/out merit? C’mon already this almost feels like spillover from that Cameron hating crowd. Oh well! If you want truth? this is one of the places you’ll get that. If you want drivel from people that are never happy? Then the mindless Blu-ray forum may be more your speed. 🤷🏻♂️🙂

Couldnt have said it better myself. What really cracks me up is the fake outrage, such as “I just canceled my pre order” or “I’ll stick with the old blu ray”😂. Cannot wait for this 4K, and this review intensified my impatience😊

@@oldaxehead655 The 100gig vs 66gig is a valid complaint. I think the only time Paramount used the 100gig discs was for The Godfather releases.

I love this movie but I don't understand this obsession with resolution. How many versions of the same movie do you need? I can't imagine being so obsessed that you have a nervous breakdown because you can't see every pore on an actor's face.

Great review. - I have preordered the UK special edition which includes same transfer as US version it also includes rigid outer case and 2 film posters, several lobby cards. It cost roughly the same as in the USA.
The thing with those is no no digital copy
Now I've read rumors that studios in US might stop doing digital copies altogether so if that ever happens it'll be cool there'll be no tradeoff

I'm definitely purchasing this. However I must ask: Was the missing 70 seconds restored to the opening scene? Example-a close up shot of Al Mullock's knuckles. And was the Finale music at the end restored to play to its completion?
Dont understand why 56 megbits per sec .....could that be due original source and restraints? Almost 3 hr film on 66 gig byt disk...could've maybe just put it on a bluray? Just asking 😮

🤨As I’ve explained hundreds of times over the years: The NATIVE images in these comparisons always have absolutely NOTHING🚫 to do with any TV settings & they are not pictures from a TV screen!!🙄 As I also explained in this video, these are always the NATIVE images pulled & present directly from on the discs themselves!!👌
TV settings have ZERO🚫 effects because that’s not at all how the tech for pulling NATIVE images from the discs works, it’s not done on a TV whatsoever!!🤦♂️

I hope to see more of Sergio Leone's movies like Duck You Sucker and Once upon a Time in America make it to 4k. I'd also like to see William Wyler's The Big Country make it to 4k, too.
I only wish they didn't cheap out with UHD-66gb discs instead of the UHD-100gb. It would look even better and wouldn't have people frothing at the mouth.
Real shame they crushed this down to a bd66 would have liked to have seen a bd100 and some higher bitrates but its an improvement over the 4k stream at least
So this 4K physical version doesn't look like the 4K streaming version?
It's around the same bitrate, so I don't understand why that shouldn't be the case.

It's a criterion blu-ray but Martin Scorsese did a great job over seeing Marlon Brando one eyed jacks

Which audio languages are included in the US print please? Apologies in case I missed it.
In General, for us European followers it would be great if you could always list/mention which audio languages in addition to English are included and the formats they come in. Amazon does a very bad job on this and often misses to list all audio tracks properly.

Here in europ we get the special limited edition and a normal edition (25 dollar).
This is also released in UK version if you miss this release.
Obviously, the 4K is more detailed. That was expected. But in some of your screenshots, it looks like they may have gone just a bit too far with the digital sharpening filters. I may not be able to tell until I see the movie in motion. Regardless, I’ll be buying it. It’s just that I favor, archival restoration over digital modernization. I’m just hoping this wont look like Aliens.
Please don't tell me the physical version is the same as the garbage 4K streaming version? the 4K streaming they fully cleaned the grain, it looks modern digital clean look, looks terrible, I would prefer if Kino Lober did this restoration how they did The good, the bad and the ugly.
