My copy of King Kong came in yesterday and I can’t wait to check it out. I heard another channel say that the bit rate was much lower than what you measured and am I’m very glad to hear from you that that was not the case!
When I watched the new paramount version of this movie (I previously owned the studio canal version) I noticed an immediate difference. The movie plays better like frame for frame, it just plays right. And I certainly noticed the image quality. Although I didn’t have nothing to verify my findings other than the eye test. Glad I wasn’t speaking bullshit.
I have the SC release and it looks awful. So glad to see Paramount did a stellar job to correct that mistake of color grading . Can't wait for my Paramount Disc , I'm in the UK so it's on its way may take another week yet though . Thank you for the in-depth review.
I pulled the trigger on King Kong and pre-ordered it. Even seeing comments saying it's most likely the Studio Canal one and most likely Paramount won't spend money on any color grading. I'm glad I did after hearing this review. I'm just bummed about the special features.

In Australia, we didn't get a local release of The Shout bluray edition from 2021; and it's futile to import from US, as we are locked to reg-B. So when in 2022 the Studio Canal 4K version was released with TV version, we had to pounce on it. We had no idea the 2024 Paramount release was even in the works; sometimes you win, but you lose... But thanks again James for the in-depth analysis!

I bought the Col .45 set after watching your review. I have to point out that a lot of the episodes are carbon copies of other western series shown around same time. One episode in particular stood out ep 14 'Blood Money' as the script if nearly identical to an episode of Lawman called 'The Parting'. The Lawman episode was from season 2 ep 34. I do have a lot of 50's early 60's and I love to watch them. Another great series is called 'Tales of Wells Fargo' and I recommend you check it out if you can spare the time.
Got the new Kong 77 steelbook but put the 2 blu rays in the steelbook with the 4k as the new 4k’s dvd only has the theatrical version and no extra features (the back prong is deep enough to stack the 2 DVD’s as I’m only keeping them for the extra features including the hidden feature of the tv cuts commercials)
The only Studio Canal release I think is better than the US counterpart is the Fifth Element 4k, noticeably better than the US release. That's the only exception I'm aware of, I stay away from SC releases and wait for the Shout release or whoever else might release it.
Have you had time to review Red 1 & Red 2 4K steelbook from Walmart? Have both in br but won’t double dip unless you think worthwhile. Ordered King Kong LE based on your review. Thanks 👍🏼

Hello James. I’m Always hesitant in buying TV series on DVD or Blu-ray format only because in the past, I’ve noticed a little disclaimer on the back of the box sets or the individual casing. there is very fine print at the bottom where all the specs are. a certain disclaimer reading - Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions. Music has been changed for this home video version. Paramount CBS is pretty much famous for doing this on certain TV shows. But other shows from other studios have done hack jobs as well. Addams Family comes to mind. I guess some studios don’t want to pay out for copyright on music clearance. I think the exception to the rule is I Love Lucy and the honeymooners and maybe Hogan’s heroes and a few others. Which is why I question the Gomer Pyle set because it happens to be on the regular DVDs where that disclaimer is. is there any way of knowing whether or not these episodes in their syndicated form are at full 25 minute length with original audio and nothing changed? Thank you.
I hope Paramount releases the rest of I Love Lucy on blu-ray. They did the first two seasons and then stopped. I don’t really understand how they can do Gomer Pyle before finishing Lucy.
I wonder if this is a recent trend because I really liked Studio Canal’s version of the 5th Element which a lot of people seem to think is better than Sony’s original version.
Cutthroat Island is a mixed bag, some scenes are way too yellow, while some are way more natural and better than the blu-ray. A shame cause there is nothing bad to say for the rest, heavy update when it comes to details and grain.
☝️Yes, exactly right & Studio Canal needs to STOP🛑 putting those incorrect yellow & teal false color grading / overlays onto their restorations, because they look horrible & I’m having a very hard time buying or supporting Studio Canals 4K UltraHD💿 releases anymore going forward!! 🤦♂️It’s just a dang shame & I’ve simply wasted too much of my money & been burned by Studio Canal far too many times now on over a dozen other 4K’s💿 that they have added & done horribly wrong yellow & teal bad colors gradings!!!👎🙄

Just when I thought I got it looking OK ...Next scene back to square 1. No matter what. Took me ages to recalibrate my tv back to what it was OMG not worth it!!
I think Studio Canal add the Gold tint to make the film look more like a cinema release, perhaps they do not think the average consumer knows to set their tv to Warm tint. I think they are wring to do this, but if this is the case it is a thoughtful approach. Their remasters do tend to be very filmic and solid on average esp U-571.
Paramount actually did the color grading. Also, I hate studios do some shit to a film for the sake of tv settings. Theres cinema mode and filmmakers mode to make movies look like how they do in theaters as well as what the filmmakers intended.
So you think Studio Canal is using filters, or isn't the film tape itself degrading and yellowing over time? Maybe Paramount has proprietary technique for color grading that SC simply doesn't have.
James, any chance you might have a contact you can verify whether it's true or not that the Cheaper By The Dozen movies starring Steve Martin, Ashton Kutcher, and several more big stars (too many to list) were deemed not good enough by their copyright holders to be put on Blu-ray (CBTD2 was put on blu-ray, not CBTD1) let alone either one on 4K Blu-ray? I really hope that's not true because personally I love both movies.

So you think Studio Canal is using filters, or isn't the film tape itself degrading and yellowing over time? Maybe Paramount has proprietary technique for color grading that SC simply doesn't have.
James, any chance you might have a contact you can verify whether it's true or not that the Cheaper By The Dozen movies starring Steve Martin, Ashton Kutcher, and several more big stars (too many to list) were deemed not good enough by their copyright holders to be put on Blu-ray (CBTD2 was put on blu-ray, not CBTD1) let alone either one on 4K Blu-ray? I really hope that's not true because personally I love both movies.
