VW 1.9 TDi's are great. I bought an old Passat Estate 8 years ago with the 130bhp PD engine which was destined for the scrap heap. Gave the guy £150, fixed a few minor issues, and it now has 508,000 miles on it
I have seen an E Class W211 built if I’m not mistaken in 2006 with 803000 km, and the most astonishing thing is actually interior in black leather trim that looks almost like new. I would not say that the car even has 200000 km. The worst thing is that someone will buy it cheap, put down mileage and then sell it for double money, which is not really problem. The main problem is that someone will then say that Mercedes isn’t good because at 200000 km made so much problems.
So good to hear your commentary on reliable German engines. We have a 1993 E320 (107,000 miles) saloon in Colombia with the M104.992 engine. The car was originally sold new in the US and came to Colombia within 12 months. We have had 3 problems, although not issues of the engine itself. The first was the Engine Control Module which blew a transistor. We managed to find a 2nd hand unit from a damaged car in the US and it is operating well. However, we sent the original ECM to a repairer in Miami and have recently received a message from them to say that the unit is irrepairable! In the meantime we think we have found a repairer in Colombia so we will try that. The other issue is the throttle body. We had the original re-wired and re-installed but we are still getting throttle surging. So we obtained a 2nd hand unit from the US but it was worse! So, we are getting not only the wiring replaced, but mechanical repairs as well - here in Colombia. It is due to be installed next week. Then we will get the original fully repaired. The 3rd. issue was the biodegradable wiring. We thought about buying a new wiring harness from Germany, but have had the harness fully replaced here and all seems to be well - and cheaper!! If anyone has any comments, always gratefully received.
I sold my last Audi A6 2.0TDi with 336,000 miles on the clock, after 13 years still running as well as the day I bought it nearly new with no more oil consumption, engine never failed. My replacement A6 Avant 40TDi mild hybrid has 204 BHP and averages almost 50MPG, nearer 60MPG on a long run. 88,000 miles so far, hardly run in yet.
Amazing video brother , keep up the great work!!!!!, just a note to mention, the n52 engine from BMW is also a notable mention as they go far beyond 500k km ! Kindly asking what's the name of the sound track played
I Have a Mercedes E200 CDI : Fabrication December 2005 Engine type 646.951 2148 cmc 90 kw ( 122.4 hp ) / 4200 rpm Milleage 497.000 km Never broke, in winter start like gas. I have this car from 2007. Regular mentennance.
I had an '82 Mercedes 240D with the OM616 engine, which is a four-cylinder variant of the 617. Legendary mileage. But they were painfully slow. 0-60 was more like "yeah... at some point..." 😅. Gas mileage also wasn't great, for a diesel anyway, at around 25 mpg. Then again, it was a relatively big engine in a relatively heavy car.
I doubt that many people today would buy anything with less than 200HP. A more interesting video might be for modern engines, if there were some way to gauge how many miles they'll run. Still, many engines have an ancestry, and are improvements (hopefully) on prior plants.
I change my ALH timing belt from 215000 to 394.000 by contitech🙅♂️🤦♂️. They say it was no scofing no dry or burn soft zones …it ill granade in high rpm.Now it is saved for more 90.000 km or 4 years😅
Vw 1.9 Tdi motor - in various guises- is THE world beater. Oil change every 6k miles with the CORRECT oil and a quality oil filter , with a air and fuel filter every year and they will run forever.Obviously dont forget the timing belt every 70k ish miles.Only problem is that this particular engine is out of production since 2010 but there are still loads of them in service especially in Europe.Greetings from Ireland!
Mercedes M117 V8 should be on this list. Using high quality lubricants with regular servicing, these engines will easily run well past 800,000km. This means not using Castrol lubricants in it.
The predecessor of the OM648, the OM613 is better in many aspects due to increased simplicity. Also the OM612 5 cylinder is a legend, going a million km in sprinters!
Can’t find any reference to the famous Mercedes M110 straight six petrol 2.7 litre….fitted in everything from trucks to sports cars….i know because I’ve got one in my 1982 SL280…apparently it’s bullet proof
Just saw an x7 40i in the group I am in with 250k miles. Maybe a little too soon to add the B58 in the list but it's getting there. Oh , post was about being it the shop for a failed throttle body.
Just wait until you have to have it fixed, which you will. Then make sure your back side is greased real good. They will bend you over. And you won't even get the reach around.

M30s and M10s achilles' heel was its rocker arms, they snap into pieces very easily, M54s weakpoint is its VANOS M50 non vanos is far better engine to last, and BMW M60 is also very good engine far better than M62. B48 4 cylinder handes up to 500 hp reliably , and the s63 v8 while still somewhat problematic it’s miles ahead of any turbo v8 that has been made before.Lastly B58 well there’s a reason Toyota (Brand that entire business model is based on reliable vehicles) decided to partner with BMW.

Love my OM648. Amazes me everyday how well it runs. You need to maintain it properly.
My daily E320 T CDi 400.000 still purrs like kitten
I drove as a student Daimlers 5 cylinder 30 years ago in a 1979 built car. The engine is a masterpiece, reliable and built to last forever.
all the straight 6 run really good
High torque means lower revs so less wear, and inline six motors happen to be intrinsically well balanced

Excellent footage, excellent narration!
Generally atmospheric models. It means less friction and wear and tear. Thats normal, but my fav is BMW b58 inline six.
The best engine ever made was the Mercedes-Benz OM617.312 from W123 300 MkII. Best engine livespan with 1.000.000 Kms. No doubt.
Cast Iron inline 6's last forever.
I got 140i with the b58 inline 6 turbo stage 2 with 480bhp for 3 years no issues
You forget many high reliability engines such the one that was mounted in the Mercedes 190d. VW AVF engine is very reliable too.
All this emissions equipment and stuff makes the modern engines kill themselfs overtime
Intentionally so you buy another car and the government gets your tax
Another excellent video. Subscribed due to John Goodman narration.
My Audi ABH v8 is going strong since 1992 without any issue .... It is an engineering marvel
