I had a 67 Dart with 225 Slant 6. You could chirp the tires. The oil switch light didn't work properly, and was always on. It wasn't unusual to be driving with just 2 quarts of oil. I drove the pants off of it, for 185k, then sold it to a friend. He sold it at 250k, and he said that every now and then, that the new buyer would be seen in the Dart.

1.9 TDI is an Audi engine having it's first appearance in Audi 80 B4. Not a VW.

I've had three of the engines on this list. Buick 3.8, Jeep 4.0, and Ford 4.6. They're all very good, but I liked the Jeep 4.0 inline six the best.

The 4.6L v8 was a hooribke engine that is why Ford went back to the 5.0. But it's Ford so it won't last and you will end up on the side of the road.

The slant 6 is a Rolls Royce design.

Its not hard to find LS fan boys at car shows. You just have to look for the grooves on the ground where they dragged their knuckles to and the puddles of drool surronding the engine bay. Usually theirs also a first cousin straight out the trailer park holding a baby named Nova, Caprice or Monza close by....

Interesting and well-done! Except when you covered the GM LS engine and showed a Ford truck when you referenced it being used in trucks. Two other engines you should have covered were the Ford 200 and 289.

I don't have a problem with any of the engines on this list, just a problem with one that's not on it. The Ford 390 ci from the 352 block that was tough as nails, and used in many industrial applications. Yes, I used cubic inches, because that's how they were measured and termed.

I had the 4.9 L straight six 300 from Ford in a stretch van new in 1989. I drove the wheels off of that thing carrying loads and finally sold it at 242,000 miles. It ran like a top, you couldn’t even hear the engine run at idle all I did was change the oil every 3500 miles somebody still probably using that engine today

I owned a 225 slant six that I put over $200,000 mi on it and it wasn't even hurt. The only drawback was that it was a week engine it didn't have enough power to tear itself apart lol. It couldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's ass but it was very very reliable.

I have always been able to appreciate the 3800 from Buick.

It seems like half these engines are pushrod OHVs rather than OHCs. American's like to drive their cars at low rpms even on the freeway, that calls for low end torque and that in turn calls for a beefy engine, longer stroke, and a strong bottom end, hey, isn't this what makes diesels reliable and durable? I really don't see any big benefit from leaving the pushrod for engines that will rarely if ever get beyond the 3000 ripens range. This design is economical to build, is simpler meaning it is probably more reliable, and given the right package of gears can be both relatively quick and economical. The Ford Crown Vic and its cousins was quick enough to be a good police cruiser while it could cruise the turnpikes at 70 getting 20+ mpg in a roomy (big) and comfortable (heavy) package. Most folks buying a truck as a work vehicle only need a torquey six that is as reliable as a brick and a good set of gears. Most trucks could avoid 4WD if they had a geared rear differential that powers both sides without any electronics or driver input. The reliability (lack of) of modern cars, trucks, and tractors is directly caused by all of the electronics and this stuff gets worse as it ages. Problem too is that this stuff is always changing, meaning it's put into production before realistic testing, and replacements won't be available when the car is ten years old while you can still buy a new carb for a model T Ford.

This is more like: 8 decent reliable European Engines we know. BMW N series are good but only if you change Oil every 10k miles. Some Peugeot and Renault engines were excellent but not well known outside Europe. For instance the Renault Energy Engine or the PSA DW engine (best in class regarding noise at that time). Mercedes adapted the Renault Diesel K-Engine in small vehicles. They were amazed about the performance and smoothness considering its simplicity. Most of there engines were very reliable when maintenance was taken serious.

I had a 1981 F-100 with a 300 online 6 that was bulletproof. It has a granny 4 speed and top speed was 82 mph and it was wound up tight. When I sold it, it had over 400,000 miles and still didn't burn any oil.

Agreed with a lot of these. I have a daily driver 05 GMC it just turned over 413000, still running strong, original engine and transmission. Yes I do maintain it. Well, that’s the ticket.

Well Mercedes would like to know why you have never heard of their turbo diesel engine. It came out over a decade before the Volkswagen. It was quick and used in their big sedans.

They barely lasted over 100,000 miles. Most engines today are much better. I see engines going over 500,000 miles. I have a Toyota with 241,000 miles now and doesn't burn a drop of oil. There's still some junk out there however. American car makers took advantage of America's patriotism and never gave us the best they could. It took foreign competition to make them improve things.

Where is the Ford 4.3 V6? Would commonly outlast the 4.6 V8 by HALF AGAIN OR MORE (routinely seeing 500,000 miles), when it didn't outlast the vehicle it was in (which is what I expect MINE to manage in my current 2003 E250). Might not average as the longest lasting automotive/light truck engine ever, but it's a contender for that title = and routinely outlasts SEVERAL of the engines on this list.
