Amen. I’ve been burned selling online many times by no-shows, lowballers, fence-sitters and crazies. People are nuts. I gave away a Trek mountain bike on Craigslist once, “free at the curb” with a decent description, then went to the port to turn my wife’s car in for shipment. My phone started blowing up with texts, along the lines of “can you hold it?” (No, it’s free at the curb, it may already be gone), or “can you upload pictures” (No, I’m not selling it, it’s a free bike). SMH.

Hello Phillip, I have visited Australia twice, during the late war in Vietnam. I mean no offense, but on my visit gained the impression that Australians were lazy and seemed unmotivated. Is this a correct impression? When on my last visit I thought a buy here pay here would be profitable. Anyway, migrating to Sydney would have caused a war in my family as I was supposed to take over the business from my sainted Grandfather. Mate, at 84 you should continue doing what you love, I am pushing 75 and intend to die with my boots on. When I was visiting, scores of Greeks and Sicilians were migrating, it is my understanding that many Rhodies and South Africans are new migrants.

@@joewelnack3283 A good summary, but still a great place to live. Yes there are a fair number of people from South Africa who migrated here. But a 100 years ago there was a two way flow. My birth name is Mordaunt anx my Mother remarried after my Fathed was killed on th HMAS Sydney along with all 745 crew. It was only recenfly found.
If you Google the Mordaunt Family History, near my name you will find the details of how my Grandfathers young sister found the Firsf Leper Colony in Kenya, then expanded to the USA.
You will also find the famous Aviator Sir Geoffrey Ds Havilland who married into my Grandfarhers family, then moved to Kenya before designing the DH Comet, the first Jet airliner. His children still live in Melbourne, as do I. Lord Mordaunt now lives in Melbourne. He holds the oldest Hereditary Title in the Landed Gentry. Princess Diana was a descendent of one of the Lord Mordaunt's. The current Lord Mordaunt's Grandfather caused a major scandal when he took the Grandfather of King Charles to Courf and charged him with adultery. If you Google Walton Hall, now a Hotel you will find the story. Walton Hall was part of a 4000 acre property, that had been the Family Seat since the twelth century, but around 1970 Lord Mordaunt sold it and walked away from what some historians describe as the "Greatest Scandal" in British History.
I have been in bed for the last 3 years in COVID 19 Recovery, so I enjoyed reading your comments. Regards, Phillip.

As a used car lot. I TOTALLY understand you Craig. We don't do anymore favors, or special considerations for anyone. Meaning that we wont change any tires, wheels or pull my nice set of wheels off one car to the other just so they can see if they want to buy. It's frustrating dealing with entitled customers. Not all of them are like that though!

    • @Oxios
      @Oxios 2 года назад +4

Hell I'm a people pleaser but when it comes to wheels and tires, I would never swap them between cars just because. Use your imagination. You should want the base vehicle first. Then if you want to accessorize it I can help with that. If you're using my shop to preview something you wanna do on some other car somewhere else in the world that's a disrespect to my time to help actual customers, but more importantly my tech's time. We provide actual service on owned cars, so he has better things to do for people who actually need service than letting some random play car dress up.

I just had this happen to me last weekend. I was helping my son buy a car and we found one that met his needs about an hour away. I contacted the dealer and made an appointment with a sales person for the next morning. We arrive and while we were looking the car over, we are told it had sold just a few mins prior. Literally "missed it by that much". No reason to get mad about it, it is what it is. Its not a buyers car until money exchanges hands.

This is what I ALWAYS do. Worked when I had my dealership and works in the private sector.
I ask what time they're coming. If they say tomorrow, I tell them there are other people interested.
I'm not going to hold it specifically for you. If they say they are 5 hours away, I tell them that they are first in line. I will give you 8 hours to get here and as long as I can reach you by phone during your trip, I will hold it for you. If your phone is off, the guy standing next to the vehicle is going to get it. Make sure you have your phone ON. Many people have told me that they're coming but never show up.
The serious people have no problem with that.
I don't expect anyone to start driving for a 5 hour trip without some assurance that I will hold it.
Every subsequent caller is told of the situation, so there's no confusion.
If Mr. "I'm coming right now, hold it for 5 hours " doesn't answer his phone at the 6 hour mark (after I make 10 attempts), the guy who shows up gets it.
      Simple and fair.

To be fair, my parting words to whoever I talk to on the phone wanting to set up a time to buy what I'm selling are "I've got several people interested in buying my (whatever). The first person to show up gets it." In one instance two buyers showed up at the same time. I told them to figure it out between them. I said nothing after that. I watched and listened to them discuss it until they resolved the situation. After listening to your experiences, it seems that I got lucky that both parties settled the matter. By covering yourself as thoroughly as you do, you do as much as can be done. People are unpredictable. You're doing great. Keep a "thick skin."

Good video Craig. First come first serve. I always tell people to get there time, cash together and then call me or txt me. I also just lay it all out for them on my ad. Side note, I'm not a dealer and I'm not as successful like you brother, I'm just commenting. I just buy and sell things. Your channel is my favorite. Thank you

Damn, that deposit thing really escalated quickly! Never realized there could be such an obvious a downside to deposits!
It's almost as though you need to have a VERY clear deposit policy, perhaps something where first with the cash wins, but a deposit buys them a 24 hour hold on anyone else being first with the cash, and where it's all managed with some sort of electronic system so there's no room for error.

I had a dealership where I had to make an appointment to see a car and when I got there for my appointment they let a walk in take the car that I had an appointment to see and drive. I chewed them out and will never go back to them. I got a better car from a dealership that is in another state and had a better deal and interaction with them. It is even hard to sell a car to people and not be a dealer. They seem to act the same way.

At least you have the decency to let the customer know it was sold. I've had two new vehicles "get sold out from under me", and I had no idea until I showed up for my test drive appointment. And I get it, ya snooze ya lose, and obviously the new car dealer wants to still get you in there in hopes of selling you something else. But I knew what I wanted, they no longer had it, so I just politely took my business elsewhere, no hard feelings.

I had a similar situation years ago on a private party sale. I had a fairly rough '69 Mustang Mach 1 that I bought to drive while my nice '69 Mach 1 was being finished. Upon completion of the nice car, I listed the rough but daily driven car for sale, and clearly underpriced it- I got a lot of interest. I told each person that contacted me that I would sell it to the first person who showed up with cash in hand. One guy came and looked at it, told me he loved it and would go get the cash right away. I told him then that if someone else showed up with cash it would be sold and he said he understood. I didn't hear from him for 2 days. The next guy who showed up came with cash in hand, we made a deal and the car was sold. As we were finishing the paperwork, here comes guy #1 again. I pulled him off to the side and told him the car was already sold AS I TOLD HIM- he threw a big fit, wanted to fight me and the buyer in the street right there. As I blocked him from the seller, my deputy sheriff neighbor heard the commotion and came over- in uniform. Amazingly, angry man immediately stopped, jumped in his truck and left- not before yelling a comment out the door about how he would be back to finish the "ass whuppin". Never saw the dude again.
Some people are just wound too tight.

Day 4 I'm at work, guy 2 comes and makes an offer but my dad says call my son in the AM. Guy 2 calls, agrees on price, comes and buys. At work that night guy 1 shows up at the house with cash. He and his dad were arguing in the driveway a few minutes after my dad told him it just sold.

Happened to me…my Mom wanted to buy a Ford and put down $200, they wouldn’t let her test drive it, later they said it needs a new transmission so now you have to pay $2000 more, you don’t get deposit back even though paper work said price was $5000 but now $2000 more. Honestly that dude that got angry at you was probably a bogus buyer, if he showed up he would’ve 100% tried to lower the asking price, when I sell stuff I always write “first come, first served” and sometimes: “being sold as is”, on the ad, plus you get a feel of the buyer by how they message you, some are easy to deal with and some try to be slick, furthermore I usually just ignore hate/negative messages like that, some people take pride in being time wasters, and I have no idea why lol, some people out there think that they are the shit and can get whatever they want, I usually don’t like to deal with people like that, I’m more than comfortable to wait for a buyer I’m comfortable with, some might not like it but it’s my choice as a seller, not trying to waste anybody’s time, I’m proud of all my sales because I know the items are going to like minded people like me, still have connections with all buyers up to this day

There’s a big difference between an honest small business owner and some of the snakes in your industry. There’s a reason people hate car dealers especially the larger guys that stuff loans with warranty’s and other extras, they lie about fees, etc. The sickening part is all the entitled people think they are owed something. Good for you for sticking up for yourself. Just found the channel a few days ago love the videos. I am a NH resident from Laconia.

Your methods make sense, I don't know why some people just don't get it. I've missed out on a vehicle that I had an appointment to see, someone else bought it before my appointment. Sure, I was disappointed, but I figured that wasn't meant for me. I was in the market for something very specific, Jeep Wrangler TJ Unlimited (only made for three years) with a manual transmission and hard top. A few months later I found and even better one (also with Rubicon package) someone else backed out on and I showed up with cash and bought it. Cheers.

What you should’ve done is as you did with the last purchase(tell the guy with the cash… I have an appointment at 3 and you can come at 4….)…. Easy

I have sold a few Harleys by listing them on the marketplace with an off-site showing. I list the time it will be shown with a fifteen or twenty-minute window. I also list it as "the first person that hands me the cash gets the bike". My bikes are all quality with a really fair price so people show up and this one time a guy who has bought from me in the past got off his bike and walked straight up to me without even looking at the bike for sale and handed me the cash while two other buyers were still trying to decide. They were really mad because they were there before this guy and the buyer pulled up just a few minutes after the showing started.
