true but that doesn't mean there aren't various degrees of good and bad, i personally would characterize quality as whether it succeeds its artistic intention and how well those appeal to me (ie a feel good song that makes you feel good or a horror core song that makes you scared, or a political song that has good thoughtful messages ) how creativity it is and the influence those innovative decisions had on the medium as a whole, the difficulty of the craft (which is why i respect a lot of "lyrical miracle" rap despite it being a pretty saturated sub genre). 2 and 3 in particular are the most concerned with technically ability like rhyme and flow while for the most part all 3 is relevant to the lyrics themselves. for example Kendrick Lamar's best albums hits each criteria the hardest, exceptionally innovative with extremely unique flows and production (especially in TPAB), compelling in its message, and technically proficient, and those are considered some of the best albums of all time. same with a lot of the other "goats" like Nas and big, both succeeded at what they were trying to do in each song compellingly, wrote their songs in a difficult way that required wit, and innovated the genre. even some sound cloud rappers occasionally meet some of these marks and honestly good for them (granted plenty don't, looking at you lil Xan).

Loool, GZA, MF DOOM 😂 Nobody listen that shit man cmon ... You cant put underground rapper on a GOAT list, they dont have influence, they dont have cultural relevance .. If they are not famous is because they arent good, period. They can be amazing lyricist but rap is not only that but also flow, voices, delivery, charisma, energy, beat selection !!!
Were is Wayne ? Were is Kanye ? Were is Drake ? Were is fucking snoop dogg ? Biggie had 2fucking album in his career how can you put him ahead of Jay-z when he has 14number 1album and 22grammy ??? When he has 3classic and 6others very good albums ???? And lil wayne is the most influencial, original, creative and productive rapper ever, like it or not its a fact so if he isnt in your top 10 you are biased.
"Latest is greatest" is a cancerous mentality in hip hop. Smh. We're the only music genre where our "greatest" changes every 5 years. I can't stand that shit.
THE TOP TEN HAS TO BE: 1)2Pac (he had TOTAL control and mastery of the people) 2)A Tribe Called Quest (a group but hip hop nevertheless) 3)Scarface 4)Biggie 5)Rakim 6)MF DOOM and all his other aliases 7)Kendrick Lamar (this is because his lyrics are poetry in motion) 8)Ice Cube (wrote a lot of albums, songs and is a fucking genius in general- also has the BEST dis track in the WORLD) 9)Nas 10)Aesop Rock (personal favorite of mine) THE BEST YOUNG RAPPER OF ALL TIME (not hip hop, but rap in general) DIZZEE RASCAL *drops mic*
@@ItsValWow No I do too I was just replying to the first guy. Andre better easily, Pacs influence was massive but he has a mediocre discog. All Eyez On Me is the most overrated Classic OAT
Watching the end of this makes me think you should do a Breakdown piece about overshadowed greats, those that are collaborative and/or in groups. Big Boi is an example of a group and Royce is an example because of early AND recent collaboration with Eminem. The mention of Black Thought was also interesting.
That point about the old heads at the start is so good. People who are underrated in the GOAT convo, Lupe, DOOM, Andre, Big L, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, Chuck D, Black Thought, Canibus and Scarface. Obviously the more common ones, Nas, Big, Pac, Em, Rakim, Kendrick, Jay Z are very good too.
only half way through, but I have to agree with Jude. Without knowledge of the entirety of hip hop, you cannot even be in a conversation discussing the GOAT. Some criminally underrated emcees (not GOAT status) are AZ, Rah Digga, Phonte, and Left Eye, yes Left Eye, go back and listen to Left Eye flow and then listen to pop Nicki Minaj, or Natina from Blaque. If you can't make educated comparisons you have no business even casting a vote in who the GOAT is. Great show so far. Can't wait to watch the rest!
I think both guys bring up great points. My ways of classifying someone a goat is from: 1. Influence 2. Critical Acclaim 3. Consistent Prime 4. Relevance 5. Commercial Success
These discussions are some of my favorite videos on youtube. Thanks Justin and Jude for being the two of the only cats around willing just see what the other one thinks about hip hop. RESPECK!
Jay Z- for the success Eminem/Lil Wayne- for the worldplay Lupe- for the intelligence Tupac- enough said Twista/Biggie- for the flow Outcast/Bone/Wu Tang- best groups Kanye- great production
I think it's almost impossible to determine the best rapper of all time...u can't do it without discrediting other rappers, is it Pac??What about the other cats from the 90's illmatic, ready to die don't count? What about LL cool J,Slick Rick, KRS or Rakeem(80s rappers) who came way before Pac(or any other 90s rapper) What about Eminem,3k,MF or even Kendrick(99-10s rappers) HipHop changes and evolves. sounds different every decade. How do we determine this, skill or Discography?
iMoose you simply can't crown a hip-hop artist as the greatest. impossible. it's not like pop or reggae, where you can easily say Michael Jackson & Bob Marley are the goats.
We are talking a time, when gangsta rap had emerged with the rise of N.W.A and Suge Knight’s Death Row. In a time when men were judged by what size gun they were carrying, Tupac was a man whom everyone respected despite his emotional bent of mind. He was the leader that Eminem could not be.
Eminem is like Jordan when he went to the Washington Wizards. too many lackluster performances done fucked his stats up and left it open for someone else to be considered the GOAT
I really look forward to these types of debates.you all respect each other and disagree... what a fucking concept now a days. Keep these coming. Respect
NewNinetys Tha Carter 2, 3 and 4 not to mention any of his mixtapes. And this is from a guy who also had countless memorable features. Biggie had two of the best albums in rap at that time. As far as straight spitting no one did it better. I don't think he is the GOAT but the way he was able to impact society in such a short amount of time gives him more than a reason to be in the top 5
@@desolatesouls3040 'scuse me for blunt but i been eating cunt since pimps was pushin pink caddies wit the fishtank pumps These kids dumb as fuck. Drake an entertainer, not a rapper. Wayne ain't close to top 20. Pac a poet, and no disrespect, but no top 5. Check the fucking Big ghost chronicles softest in the game for a good laugh.
Love these convos. Usually agree more with Justin but I appreciate Jude just as much. You two are really entertaining. One thing I'd ask Jude is if he really expects Kendrick's last 4 projects to not stand the test of time. For example, I can confidently say that To Pimp a Butterfly will go down as the greatest album of the 2010's, as well as one of the best of all time. It's changed music a mere three years after its release, and has inspired/influenced people outside of the hip hop community from David Bowie to Kasmani Washington. I really don't see us 20 years from now going "man, what were we thinking. That project wasn't that good".
Got to look at the greats Melly Mell,Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Rakim, Fat Boys,Kane, MC Lyte, Latifah, Krs1, Kane, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Method Man, Red man, Ice Cube, NWA, Queen Latifah, Salt N Peppa, Moe Dee, DOC , etc LL is the Michael Jordan of rap he pulled from everyone. Built Def Jam, Jams still being played on radio to this day. Took it global inspired jay z, pac, eminem etc made rap sexxy appeared vulnerable. Had the biggest gold chains . He is the blue print . I could go on !
Lil Wayne has everything. Great bars, great commercial success, never had a bad verse, he created mumble rap, doesn’t hesitate to get out of his comfort zone and sound like today’s rappers and still spit fire. I don’t think anyone can match Wayne.
Dude said hes unfamiliar with all of Kendrick's work then not 2 mins later says, "you can't say whose the greatest and not know all his shit." I know they're not talking Kendrick specifically but its kinda funny thats what started this convo
I don't think you could really have a GOAT, you never know, there may be some really, really underground rappers who are technically better than a Biggy or an Eminem. Lyrics wise, a suburban white kid will relate more with a rap about partying and smoking weed than a rap about shit going on in the hood and about the relation between for example black Americans and the police. So even lyrically you can't really say the one is better than the other. Hip hop doesn't even need to be political, it wasn't in the late 70s and early 80s atleast. Yeah, I think a track with some well thought political lyrics is better than one about fucking 'bitches' even though I can't really relate with it, but even that is pretty opinion based. For example, a lot of people label Eminem as the GOAT, but for me in my personal opinion he wouldn't stand a chance because I really just like people like Nas or Kendrick more in the overall picture, even when Eminem is amazing technically and lyrically.
I know top anything is subjective. But the reason why I love these type of discussions is because they drop some knowledge that maybe I would've never known about ( certain songs or artist) and there is nothing better than going back and listening to some of these awesome projects and automatically adding it to your playlist.
I generally base artists off of specific talents. There's no goat for me, just goats of certain categories. For example, Big Boi is my goat of flow, Andre 3000 for lyrical talent, Jay Z for class and relevance of culture, Eminem for rhyming, Nas for the perfect mix
@@demetrelontos1359 It's true honestly Nas has a balance of everything that makes an Emcee. He's completely all around and pretty much always puts out quality work.
@@shauncameron8390 & Kendrick! Drake's highkey a bum but tbf everyone's dips their toe in ghostwriters usually. It's like steroids in pro sports, dark secret that everyone's on
Canibus, AZ, R.A. The Rugged Man, Locksmith, Elzhi. Extreme top tier lyricism. I'll also throw in Loaded Lux if we're talking sheer lyrical ability. And that's just to name a few.
Everyone has their favorite "time" of the day. there is NO greatest time of the day. You can't say blue, yellow or green is the best color. It's all intertwined and part of eachother and can't co-excist without eachother.
Opinions on which album is best, or if the album is good, are relative, but Jude in no moment has actually heard the effin album. All his arguments are moot, cause he's just imagining what the album may or may not sound like.
Off topic, I love how they can argue, so to speak, more so proving their point, but still have respect for another’s opinions and actually try to understand each other without having their emotions getting the best of them. Phenomenal, this is how to influence different perspective.
This might be the best-discoursed hiphop conversation I've ever heard online. Yall taught me some shit even though I agree and disagree with you both on so many points.
Wayne? Lol he cant walk in Pac's shoes. They dont have murals of Wayne in slums in Africa nor have Armies named after him. Wayne doesnt have close to the global impact that Pac does. Even just listening to them talk you dont hear nothing from Wayne. Pac transcends hip hop, was an actor, activist, poet, revolutionary etc
my top 10, with a loose order, easy to switch around nas andre 3k jay-z pac scarface biggie rakim kendrick em MF DOOM if any of you think i'm missing anyone, tell me
Beethoven is the greatest rapper of all time if you wanna talk about influences, cause rap came from rock and roll, rock and roll came from soul, soul came from r&b, etc. etc. My point is just because someone influenced someone does not take away from their credentials, cause Scarface had his influences, like slick Rick and ice cube, and he took those influences and reshaped them, their essence is still there, but innovation did take place, sane thing goes for Kendrick Lamar. They only thing Kendrick is missing is a legacy/ school of rappers to come holding him as their influence, other than that, commercial success, critical acclaim, lyricism, emotional connection, he's got it all and he's got more accolades than your favourite rapper, 4 certified classics (including DAMN obviously), 1 of 4 rap albums to get a certificate from havard (Illmatic, miseducation of Lauryn Hill and the low end theory) Best streaming album of all time (DAMN) and two of the highest ever album, not just hip hop, in all context of music on Metacritic. 7 Grammy's with two projects, most Grammy nominations for a rapper. Kendrick has it all
if we're gonna talk about commercial success and numbers eminem is number one + the dude has an oscar and he did everything and a lot of styles through his whole career he began as a clown in hip hop and funny as fuck with insane lyrics and he managed to become one of the best lyricist to ever live and has insane rhyming skill and wordplays and he's still killing it ... he has it all . my point is just becuz kenrick is your favorite rapper doesn't mean he is the best . im not saying eminem is the best but each rapper has an influence and the difference is what makes it perfect . it would be boring if we all agree on one rapper you know ..
Where is Lupe in the GOAT talk? These fools sleeping on Tetsuo and Youth but, Lu did say "Bumped into Doom the greatest rappers collide Everybody dead but AZ the greatest rapper survived I'm not the greatest rapper... the greatest rappers' a lie Got the same points as Lux the greatest rappers a tie, Chris said Common, Common said Kweli, Talib said I'm sure it's Mos Definitely"
I think Kool Keith is extremely underrated. Sure, his discography is not all A+ material, but he also has like ~20 albums over FOUR decades. Always bringing interesting new concepts, the different personas, pioneered the horrorcore/sci-fi raps, not to mention being part of Ultramagnetic MCs. He can spit in several different styles, and is definitely not afraid to go completely left field which brings a lot of influence .
Eminem is the goat, like seriously most records sold by almost double to any other rapper. Best lyricist by far he reads the dictionary for fun. Introduced many crazy new styles. Has been creating rap constantly since 88. All his music is catchy as fuck. He can freestyle better than anyone past or present maybe even future. He has the speed, he can rap faster than tech n9ne. His fluent words and fluent flow is unparralel and he was the first white boy who made it big and got accepted by another race into their territory. MGK Mac miller etc all can't rap for shit in my opinion compared to em they are nothing but dust. So there you have it in every category Eminem is untouched so stop saying he's not the goat just cuz of his skin color idiots. Andre 3000 in 2nd.
This was so good I watched it twice 💯 Justin, you said at the end of this marvelous piece of hip hop dialogue, that you were still unsure of "The Breakdown" topic for tomorrow, April 29. After the recent events and conversations in hip hop, highlighted by pieces such as this discussion, I feel it would only be right to give us your "Breakdown" for the Tupac The GOAT conversation you teased on the end of your "Tupac-alikes" piece. GOAT list for me:
1. Pac
2. Eminem

6. André 3000
7. DMX
8. Jay Z
9. GZA

And lil wayne is the most influencial, original, creative and productive rapper ever, like it or not its a fact so if he isnt in your top 10 you are biased.
here is mine
1.kendrick
2.biggie
3. mf doom
4. Jay z
5. Black thought
6. Rakim
7. Eminem
8.pac
9. Andre
10. Nas
HipHopDX is a blessing to the hip hop community. They provoke great conversation.
"Latest is greatest" is a cancerous mentality in hip hop. Smh. We're the only music genre where our "greatest" changes every 5 years. I can't stand that shit.
THE TOP TEN HAS TO BE:
1)2Pac (he had TOTAL control and mastery of the people)
2)A Tribe Called Quest (a group but hip hop nevertheless)
3)Scarface
4)Biggie
5)Rakim
6)MF DOOM and all his other aliases
7)Kendrick Lamar (this is because his lyrics are poetry in motion)
8)Ice Cube (wrote a lot of albums, songs and is a fucking genius in general- also has the BEST dis track in the WORLD)
9)Nas
10)Aesop Rock (personal favorite of mine)
THE BEST YOUNG RAPPER OF ALL TIME (not hip hop, but rap in general)
DIZZEE RASCAL

Pac, Kendrick, Jay-z, Lil Wayne, Nas
Fernando Harris I'd have to give it up to this list
Fernando Harris Lil Wayne GOAT!!
Lil wayne😭

Get Pac out and we straight
"I can" on Gods son is one of the best rap songs of all time
at 25 pac had the whole country ready for war. nobody in the history of rap made you feel the way pac did. pac is goat period
Andre better
Think that's debateable but okay.
Joel Clark Andre is better than Pac imo
@@ItsValWow No I do too I was just replying to the first guy. Andre better easily, Pacs influence was massive but he has a mediocre discog. All Eyez On Me is the most overrated Classic OAT

2pac. Andre 3k... two of the greatest if all times!
At the end of the day, who is "THE GOAT" is all subjective, it really doesn't matter who is considered the greatest and who isn't
Leo this is the most ignorant comment I've ever read about hip hop
thedondon911911 Explain to me what was ignorant about what I said?
thedondon911911 Yes...Do explain how what he said is ignorant....Cuz my G.O.A.T is Biggie
Bernard Gilkes Mine is Biggie too...
biggie is mine too. Then Nas...Then ghostface.
Watching the end of this makes me think you should do a Breakdown piece about overshadowed greats, those that are collaborative and/or in groups. Big Boi is an example of a group and Royce is an example because of early AND recent collaboration with Eminem. The mention of Black Thought was also interesting.
I am glad you are breaking this down and am happy to spend the hour with you doing it.

"IS THERE A HEAVEN FOR A BALLER"?- Tu Pac (Only Fear of Death) one of the coolest phares ever in rap
only half way through, but I have to agree with Jude.
Jimmi Pynk And now Gates is so damn close.
I think both guys bring up great points.
My ways of classifying someone a goat is from:
1. Influence
2. Critical Acclaim
3. Consistent Prime
4. Relevance
5. Commercial Success
These discussions are some of my favorite videos on youtube. Thanks Justin and Jude for being the two of the only cats around willing just see what the other one thinks about hip hop. RESPECK!
Jay Z- for the success
Eminem/Lil Wayne- for the worldplay
Lupe- for the intelligence
Tupac- enough said
Twista/Biggie- for the flow
Outcast/Bone/Wu Tang- best groups
Kanye- great production
Darkeith Lofton lil wayne ? who shit in ur brain? (freestyle for scale)

I think it's almost impossible to determine the best rapper of all time...u can't do it without discrediting other rappers, is it Pac??What about the other cats from the 90's illmatic, ready to die don't count? What about LL cool J,Slick Rick, KRS or Rakeem(80s rappers) who came way before Pac(or any other 90s rapper)
What about Eminem,3k,MF or even Kendrick(99-10s rappers)
HipHop changes and evolves. sounds different every decade.
How do we determine this, skill or Discography?
iMoose you simply can't crown a hip-hop artist as the greatest. impossible. it's not like pop or reggae, where you can easily say Michael Jackson & Bob Marley are the goats.
Tropical99 Oh. I wasn't aware one specific genre isn't quantifiable where the rest are.
Tropical99 yeah that's what I said
iMoose it's about having common sense and not being biased
Everyone is biased about music. It is purely bias. haha
We are talking a time, when gangsta rap had emerged with the rise of N.W.A and Suge Knight’s Death Row. In a time when men were judged by what size gun they were carrying, Tupac was a man whom everyone respected despite his emotional bent of mind. He was the leader that Eminem could not be.
at 23:28 I was like "ROLL THE FUCKING CLIP, JAMES!" hahahaha
Dope channel..finally true hip hop heads from a perspective outside of NY ✊🏾 Keep it up 💯
My Top 5: 1- Lil Wayne, 2- 2Pac, 3- J.Cole, 4- Eminem, 5- B.I.G.
Eminem is like Jordan when he went to the Washington Wizards. too many lackluster performances done fucked his stats up and left it open for someone else to be considered the GOAT
Jimmi Pynk 🤔🤔🤔 are you stupid or should I appreciate your wrong opinion. 🤔🤔🤔 joking thanks for telling us what you where thinking.

Nas, HOV, 3 stacks, K Dot, Biggie, Tupac, and Wayne. Could say any of these on any given day
NewNinetys Tha Carter 2, 3 and 4 not to mention any of his mixtapes. And this is from a guy who also had countless memorable features. Biggie had two of the best albums in rap at that time. As far as straight spitting no one did it better. I don't think he is the GOAT but the way he was able to impact society in such a short amount of time gives him more than a reason to be in the top 5
What do you think about Big Pun?
NewNinetys lol Wayne is The Greatest..

Love the dynamic but you can't argue with a guy that "no longer listens to rap".
Rakim is the 'G.O.A.T.' PERIOD!
Nah only 2 ablums
Got to look at the greats Melly Mell,Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Rakim, Fat Boys,Kane, MC Lyte, Latifah, Krs1, Kane, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Method Man, Red man, Ice Cube, NWA, Queen Latifah, Salt N Peppa, Moe Dee, DOC , etc
LL is the Michael Jordan of rap he pulled from everyone. Built Def Jam, Jams still being played on radio to this day. Took it global inspired jay z, pac, eminem etc made rap sexxy appeared vulnerable. Had the biggest gold chains . He is the blue print . I could go on !
Ice Cube was the first rapper to release albums in consecutive years.

Lil Wayne has everything. Great bars, great commercial success, never had a bad verse, he created mumble rap, doesn’t hesitate to get out of his comfort zone and sound like today’s rappers and still spit fire. I don’t think anyone can match Wayne.
This is the most influential discussion on Hip Hop and Rap that I have ever watched. Hands down.
Dude said hes unfamiliar with all of Kendrick's work then not 2 mins later says, "you can't say whose the greatest and not know all his shit." I know they're not talking Kendrick specifically but its kinda funny thats what started this convo
Pimp C also sang his ass off on them hooks too boi!!!
There's no GOAT. It's almost impossible to have an actual GOAT.
Hugo Hakvoort yes there is a goat, you're just too lazy to argue
I agree more or less. Everyone has their own strengths, it's really hard to compare artists.
Tupac Shakur it’s all opinion at the end of the day you jus have to state ur case for who u like. No right or wrong answer
Lionel Messi
Great conversation!

Doesn’t saying nas has the perfect mix basically just mean he’s the best of them all
@@demetrelontos1359 It's true honestly Nas has a balance of everything that makes an Emcee. He's completely all around and pretty much always puts out quality work.

Big Willie Style is a solid project still.
Off topic, I love how they can argue, so to speak, more so proving their point, but still have respect for another’s opinions and actually try to understand each other without having their emotions getting the best of them. Phenomenal, this is how to influence different perspective.

Kendrick has it all
He killed Justin Bieber on Epic Rap Battles Of History
if we're gonna talk about commercial success and numbers eminem is number one + the dude has an oscar and he did everything and a lot of styles through his whole career he began as a clown in hip hop and funny as fuck with insane lyrics and he managed to become one of the best lyricist to ever live and has insane rhyming skill and wordplays and he's still killing it ... he has it all . my point is just becuz kenrick is your favorite rapper doesn't mean he is the best . im not saying eminem is the best but each rapper has an influence and the difference is what makes it perfect . it would be boring if we all agree on one rapper you know ..

Lil Wayne higher
If you didn't know Lil Wayne was the G.O.A.T, now ya do.
Royce killed eminem on his own shit several times , Royce deserves a hat in the ring
