Rappers 40+ are much more lyrically inclined than those of a younger era because it used to be damn near a necessity to rap very well before even gettin in the game
Darrel Be thats because its more accessible now and people will listen to anything. Back then you had to actually go out to a record store and buy the physical copy of an album. So you had to be competitive and an actual good rapper for anyone to think it was worth actually going out to buy your album. So rap was at its peak because being a good lyricist was essential to survive in the industry

I don't know how you can make this breakdown without talking about the Tribe. ATCQ dropped an album last year which, IMO, is in their top 3 albums they've ever put out. Not only is it critically acclaimed like most tribe albums, but it also sold heaps and was only their second album to top the charts. They also managed to fit in features from their old-head friends like busta, Kwali, Andre 3000 and consequence (all of which you didn't mention either) as well as current up and comers like .Paak and Kendrick.
Pusha T and Juicy J are the two most impressive to me, because there are casual fans of the genre, like new fans or just pop fans, who genuinely think Juicy J and Pusha are new artists. Like people have no idea about Clipse and Three6, because Pusha and Juicy have put out genuine modern bangers. Also Run The Jewels run is crazy, so happy for Killer and El gettin the recognition they deserve.

The main reason why people feel like these old cats aint got nothing to give is because of the way that hip hop is different to rock. Rap and hip-hop has always been about a fresh perspective and giving a voice to the voiceless, and as such, the community has always searched for the younger emcees because they have this fresh perspective that no-one in the mainstream has heard before. Hip-hop has always been about what's next and what's new. Nowadays, because hip-hop fans have started to age, we've got this new idea though. That the new shit isn't as good as the old shit. This has been made even more powerful by the internet not only allowing wack rappers to get a stage, but making all the good old shit easily accessible for everyone. This leads to these over-40 cats to still hold, and in some cases, even create more fame for themselves despite their prime years being behind them. 10 years ago, the list would have been much shorter because the belief that the old shit was better wasn't as prevailing in the main-stream as it is now, as well as because a lot of these rappers that made it in the 90s weren't over 40 yet. if you look at a lot of those careers tho, most of their lowest selling and in some cases worst music came in that period where they didnt have their old popularity, or their newfound resurgence of popularity.
Isaac Calabrese I don't understand. Are you saying that once you turn 40 you no longer have a voice?? Here in America the black struggle is the black struggle to the death. Anything we do at any age is a reflection of The Culture. OUR CULTURE. There are millions of black ppl that are over 40 who feel like they are voiceless. STILL. Who speaks for them? Surely you can't a kid born in the mid 90's to be that voice. Or are you saying that Hip-Hop can no longer be that mouth piece for them at that age? The black ppl who were there at it's creation or shortly after. Who grew up right along the elements and the music. Now should be unceremoniously told to go away? 🤔
I'm not saying that once you turn 40 you don't have a voice, I'm saying that hip-hop has historically been about new and fresh perspectives. This is what differs it from other genre's like rock because allowing an artist to repeat themselves for 30 years is frowned upon. Often someone who has been in the game for ~20 years doesn't have that fresh perspective because they've already allowed that to play out in their music. This is especially the case if they have already had some amount of success previously, because they have spent a lot of their recent life living with money and fame and disconnected from the street. This of course is never 100% the case and there is definitely a place for the older cats to have a spot in hip hop, especially as the fans age, but the day when the genre stops looking for new talent with fresh perspectives is the day the genre starts to die and go stagnant. This has happened historically with most other genres. Rock fans stopped looking for new perspectives and now it is a fragmented culture with some clinging to only the older artists and the newer voices not really being able to break into the mainstream because of it. This isn't something I think anyone wants for hip hop because without this culture thats been cultivated, we would be without the talents of many amazing young artists.
No its the White industry that plays Hip-Hop, we control the movements they own & control the industry's. Every Hip-Hop award has always been looked down at since the 90s til now. We need artist in control of B.E.T., Ebony, etc & build institutions. What happened 2 106? Source? Rap City? Etc? BUT TRL back getting money off Hip-Hop artist giving back to the white owners who deny equality in institutional ownership. (CMT awards broadcast on national tv, Black music which is most music only on cable) PAY ATTENTION
I don't think it's a matter of thinking the new shit isn't good. I think the issue is we can't relate to most of what these new rappers are talking about. Let's be honest, black folks weren't running around popping molly and wearing skirts like that. I grew up on Public Enemy, Tribe, Wu Tang, NAS, Pac, Big, Eminem, KRS-One. What under 30 artists are even close to touching these guys lyrically aside from say Kendrick, J.Cole, Big Sean, Tyler, Gambino, or Drake (31). Now i'll happily groove to new hip hop at the club. But I'm not listening to an album start to finish anymore.
Isaac Calabrese But now we giving the voice to the wrong people. Look at lil pump. be dont need a voice just saying 80 on my wrist hundred on my wrist over and over again. theres struggle. thats not fucking struggle
By far my most favourite video by Murs. I'm a huge fan of older music, and all the OG's that has appeared in this vid, definitely lights a fire for me.
The loss of Sean Price was truly unfortunate. Those who had been following his career know that his skills were on a constant upward trend. Sometimes I wonder what unique and irreplaceable dopeness a 50/60/70 year-old Sean Price might have dropped.
Terrell Cuevo i already saw it but still i think nas deserves a own breakdown, cus when it comes to talking about the greats the mainstream only mentions big pac and maybe em, if u ask me nas is better than all of those legends
FIFE DAWG!! I know he wasn't known as a lyricist or anything like that but he was solid on the mic and he and Q-tip did put out a great project. It's right up there, I'm still bumping that one. Such a groovy album with a strong message.
I prefer 40+ year old rappers because they tend to have the most insightful, real talk content. Yo Murs, how do you leave off cats like Common, Scarface, Big Boi, Devin the Dude, Kurupt and Talib Kweli? They're over 40 and still making dope music.
Mos Def no longer existing is probably one of the reasons for not mentioning that mastermind. In any case, mos def, yasiin bey, hell he could call himself dubby tubby king beary bubbly cub if he so chose to, and imma still listen. Despite the alias he identifies with, he is one of the GOATs.
Lyrically old heads are better as well. 50 said it though, none of this generation wants to hear any of that lyrical shit. The reason it may seem like they have "fallen off", but really they still growing personally, financially, and musically. The younger generation should show more respect. Whether or not my 16 year old cousin is actively listening to them is irrelevant, old heads still paved the way for this generations artists and are continuing to build that road day by day.
Thomas Grove That's like saying we didn't want to hear Isley Brothers,Commodores, Earth,Wind, and Fire. Music is an art and timeless that shouldn't be judged by the age of who's putting out good content as long as it's true to the art and their craft. That's the problem these kids don't understand music frequencies and its eternal.
It has nothing to do with respect or showing it. That's irrelevant. Personally, as part of the younger generation you're bashing, I only really listen to the older generation because they're that much better lyrically and I don't know a single soul in my generation that listens to these new guys that are terrible rappers, but there must be some out there. But whenever rap or hip-hop comes up in conversation, those young guys don't ever come up unless it's somebody good like Kendrick or J. Cole.
I'm not bashing. Every generation can agree that there are two different types of rappers (for the most part). There are lyrical rappers and there are mumble rappers. Everyone can agree that people like Kendrick or J. Cole are the best lyrically, but I'll go back to my point that MOST of the current generation does not want to hear lyrical rap. They want to turn up and not have to digest every line being spit. It's interesting that you say you don't know a single person who listens to the new wave of rap when that's pretty much all that's played. Migos, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Post Malone? Just want to make it a point that I listen to everyone. I enjoy both mumble and lyrical rap for different reasons.
Whenever Hip-Hop is brought up, Migos, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Post Malone are never really brought up. Maybe they do listen to them, but they've never shared that with me. Having listened to some of the mumble rappers, they don't seem to actually mumble. That's not a good term to use since they don't actually mumble. I can understand every word they're saying. They just have very little substance to their words whereas the older guys do tend to have more substance and nuance. I do agree that there seems to be more emphasis on the beat and the music than on the lyrics for some people.
In REAL HipHop we honor the OGs. There's always been a tradition of paying respects to those who come before you. I think it's the mainstream media brainwashing that's got people thinking that "you gotta be young to be a hot rapper". All the best rappers are the OGs! They the ones that's been doing this shit. In reality we only get like 1 or 2 REAL hot young rappers every year. The rest of the young guys and girls coming in are recyclables.
To me its the singers too. Children that have no depth of experience that the things they sing dont really pull the heartstrings. Its why kids are into songs from the 70s and 80s. Artists whos albums are outselling new ones right now. Its amazing. They had kate bush and fleetwood mac charting because they were put on a tv show stranger things and kids ate it up.
I Highly approve if this list as I keep forgetting to download that mixtape by Fab & Kiss...2 of the dopest/underrated MC'S in existence. So glad you made this list Murs
That's dope and all, but I won't be a true believer until rappers over 40 start debuting. Coming into the game young and growing with your fans is only natural.
Faux Title i feel you it was already too long so the criteria was those with new albums since 2015. And then it was so long I still had to cut. When I started the concept I had no idea how long this list was. Love Ghost and Doom and Mos and Jay Elec , Evidence and Alchemist of course all of Wu etc... I NEED 30 Minutes!!! Lol Would y’all watch the whole thing?
Peace Murs, Nuff Respect for the DOPE work you're doing with HipHop DX... With that being said, I can't believe you didn't mention ANY members of the legendary Wu Tang Clan!! This year Raekwon dropped "The Wild", which in m opinion was his BEST work since Cuban links! KRS; Talib Kweli & Styles P and Public Enemy dropped quality Hip Hop albums too! Thanks for helping to keep OUR culture connected, stay focused and keep SHININ', Word!!!
Server Tavares we mentioned Meth. But I feelyou. I wrote a whole Rae part. I loved the Wild! But it got cut. Time. Lmk if y’all want longer content and I can have that convo with our team and the editorial staff. Peace and thank you for tuning in
You may dubious about that metric, but Kendrick Lamar has said that he has made WAY MORE money from streaming than he ever did with people actually buying stuff. Many other artists have said the same.
Could it be that the age over 25 group relate more to the over 40 rappers since they are a dying breed when it comes to lyrics, thus they keep on staying relevant and the younger group under 25 appreciate more the beats and bass?
Jexx not necessarily. Only once guy on fushnikins wrapped super fast and really couldn’t understand him. He was dope tho. Das FX was dope also, but they weren’t as fast and both of them rapped like that but you could understand them. But they sounded nothing alike. You knew who they were and which was which. Now everyone mumbles in auto tune and sounds the same with the same exact beat. Can’t tell them a paper
Ricardo Alexander Killens you mentioned Kanye and he’s a rock star with dragon power. You comment on hip hop is automatically invalid. Now you got samples and you got straight using the same beat, same rhythm and same flow for every song now, mumbling on that damn auto tune. That’s not inspiration, that’s straight biting. And yes, rap is poetry. No one does that now.
Yup. Been thinking about this exactly topic Murs. Not sure if it's because I'm turning 40 or maybe because the older hip-hop heads are the ones making the kind of hip-hop I still like, but either way, I agree. Murs still rules the world.
You know De La Soul is one of the best rap groups ever when my 14 year old told me 3 Feet High & Rising is one of the best albums he’d ever listened to.
+BlackglassX These MF's got Krs One fucked up,he ova ya head "13 & Good" is a fuckin CAUTIONARY tale u dopes.Go & listen to his latest shit "The World is Mind" even if u dnt like his shit. You'll prob like this,If u fuck wit the Hardcore Underground.& the song "Say Gal" is talkin about Woman dressin sexy gettin that negative attention,& when us swingin dicks rely on our animal ass ways instead of intellect. Some men rape, and through no fault of their own(should be able 2 dress how u want) are raped.Krs just sayin MAYBE a start is dressing in a respectful manner,Might back the perves up.
I turned 39 two months ago and have mad appreciation for this list and everyone who's on it. To me, the Black Thought cypher was not only my introduction to the man, but was my top hip hop moment of 2017!

Don't forget the whole Wu-Tang Clan especially inspectah deck and what he's doing with Czarface killing it
By far my most favourite video by Murs. I'm a huge fan of older music, and all the OG's that has appeared in this vid, definitely lights a fire for me.
Murs is a good host i must say
Because he's a real head.
The loss of Sean Price was truly unfortunate. Those who had been following his career know that his skills were on a constant upward trend. Sometimes I wonder what unique and irreplaceable dopeness a 50/60/70 year-old Sean Price might have dropped.
RIP Sean P!
P!!!
Where the FUCK is NAS???!!'
Hey I REALLY REALLY need a breakdown on NaS, and how he chaged hiphop
+100
Check out the Documentary "Time Is Illmatic"-it'll break it all down for ya G. 1
Terrell Cuevo i already saw it but still i think nas deserves a own breakdown, cus when it comes to talking about the greats the mainstream only mentions big pac and maybe em, if u ask me nas is better than all of those legends
Murs hardly speaks of Nas, I don't know if it's hate or what
FIFE DAWG!! I know he wasn't known as a lyricist or anything like that but he was solid on the mic and he and Q-tip did put out a great project. It's right up there, I'm still bumping that one. Such a groovy album with a strong message.
Wasn't known as a lyricist?😂😂😂oh man that's a good one
Lol I'm not disrespecting, but Q-tip always got more credit than Fife.... genius.com/discussions/8591-The-source-top-50-lyricists-magazine-scans
Oh he gets his credit from the heads and it's phife not fife
My bad on the spelling. Keep in mind that I am giving him credit by saying that he SHOULD be on the list.
grew up in nyc back in the 80 and 90`s ,your channel is like a connection to the hip hop world I know , 1 from the dr .
Wu Tang???!!!
Freelance Philosopher I know, that's why I'm saying it, If he knows wu tang and supposedly likes them, why doesn't he cover them at all??
Krishan Tara at least he mentioned meth.
Krishan Tara Wu would be an episode by itself.
Happy holidays, been waiting on another breakdown for a minute!
Mitchell Moroz Big hit right here soundcloud.com/bennett-tran/hurtinallthetime
Pharrell honestly deserves his own video at this point. He hasn't stopped since Rump Shaker
In fact, he's taken it to new levels
Now we are in 2024 and Killer Mike just won a few Grammys 🏆 "they told me you're too old to make music, they told me you're too old to win Grammy...."
I prefer 40+ year old rappers because they tend to have the most insightful, real talk content. Yo Murs, how do you leave off cats like Common, Scarface, Big Boi, Devin the Dude, Kurupt and Talib Kweli? They're over 40 and still making dope music.
I forgot about Kurupt but yeah I think he didn’t have enough time....now I want to hear an album from 8 Ball & MJG
Mos Def no longer existing is probably one of the reasons for not mentioning that mastermind. In any case, mos def, yasiin bey, hell he could call himself dubby tubby king beary bubbly cub if he so chose to, and imma still listen. Despite the alias he identifies with, he is one of the GOATs.
ronald munoz Facts!!!
Murs love your stuff, but how could you miss Tribe’s new album or Nas?!?
Y'all FORGOT about KRS ONE. His last joint was fire.
rudy johnson He’s not going to be popular anymore after those paedophile defending comments
Your objective commentary and knowledge of music is outstanding. Hip Hop needs this. Fantastic!
Tech N9ne didn't get enough love in this vid.
Davion Maxwell At least he got mentioned. Snubbed Rugged Man, Redman, Ghostface, Inpectah Deck (especially in Czarface) DOOM, Kool Keith and others.
You suck
Dino velvet how
Davion Maxwell he never gets enough love
Oh shit!!!!!! Bout time somebody talks about Run The Jewels. They are putting out some of the best music of the decade
Gambit Wilson they honestly might have 2-3 classic albums already
With age comes experience
Thank you
can't believe y'all left out raekwon
The GOD
The chef
You forgot Cube!
Good Cop Bad Cop was fire
Only One Me was also very good
Cube will always be Cube, the dude is amazing
I didn't like Good Cop Bad Cop but Cube can spit it when motivated. That I am the West album was fire.
Sea Pea u heard soc them youngins on them. I think thats the last good song from cube tbh
A list of songs in the db would be great. I love adding these artist to my playlist. I always find something new. Thank u
Love what you're doing! But when we gonna get a skateboarding/hiphop video?
Thank you Murs for turning me onto Prophets of Rage, i didnt know about this project, Rage with Chuck D and B Real..i cant wait to hear this!
WU TANG still the greatest rap group ever!
Marce' Pierre icp
Marce' Pierre Agreed
I say NWA
Marce' Pierre Yep!!! 👐
Wu, OutKast, Tribe, and De La Soul are definitely on that list.
Cole.
chainlace2, they do understand that shit. I guess they just like different things than you do.
This made me look at older people in a different light. Respect your elders folks.
RIP MCA. You gotta do a video on the Beastie Boys. Paul's Boutique is one of the best rap albums of all time
I can’t imagine how many samples were used on Paul’s Boutique...classic album
Simple. They all flourished in the golden age of hip-hop
no wu-tang????
Method Man??? He was with Black Thought.
dude you are like the greatest hip-hop scholar I have ever heard... would love to see lists of greatest 100 rappers/albums of all time done by you
Did he even mention Nas??
Half the conversation should be Jay-Z, Nas, Raekwon etc.. Smh
Shabazz 7:77 when is the last time nas released a song. homies album has been in the making for a decade now
^
They had kate bush and fleetwood mac charting because they were put on a tv show stranger things and kids ate it up.
only reason i subscribed to hip hop dx
Excellent perspective my brotha, SALUTE!!! ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Yo, how about tribe? Phife and Q-Tip, come on!
Benjamin Tirone Nunes ikr
midnight maraders in my top 10 album's all time
We got it from here soooo fucking good.
You wanna make one of these videos? Can’t satisfy everybody.
Phife Diggy can no longer be counted among the talented, living rap elders; so maybe he's not the most on-point example.
I Highly approve if this list as I keep forgetting to download that mixtape by Fab & Kiss...2 of the dopest/underrated MC'S in existence. So glad you made this list Murs
You didn't talk about Ghostface????
Juan Rivera real rap
The breakdown instrumental beat is so good please never change it
That's dope and all, but I won't be a true believer until rappers over 40 start debuting. Coming into the game young and growing with your fans is only natural.
2 chainz..
Being in a wheelchair “didnt seem like some old rapper shit” 😂😂😂 HILARIOUS!!
No mention of ghostface or DOOM
Faux Title i feel you it was already too long so the criteria was those with new albums since 2015. And then it was so long I still had to cut. When I started the concept I had no idea how long this list was. Love Ghost and Doom and Mos and Jay Elec , Evidence and Alchemist of course all of Wu etc... I NEED 30 Minutes!!! Lol Would y’all watch the whole thing?
MursTv I would watch
@MursTv Yessir, we would!
MursTv been feeling this. These feel compressed and this is one of many topics that could GREATLY be expanded on.
MursTv yea
So pumped that you added RTJ to this, they've been hitting homeruns every time up.
Peace and thank you for tuning in
I just like it all, I love my era of hip hop but appreciate the new heads and get down with what sounds good
Kids don't have any money, and don't buy albums anyways. 1 older fan is worth more than 1 young fan IMO.
NO one BUYS albums.... but kids do STREAM the music a lot more then older fans.. just sayin..
I know a few people that actually buy albums. I agree about the streaming, but I am dubious about the 1500 views per sale metric.
the Car Truth Report wow. Strong point.
Love the show man!
You may dubious about that metric, but Kendrick Lamar has said that he has made WAY MORE money from streaming than he ever did with people actually buying stuff. Many other artists have said the same.
Man... I'm so glad I found this channel. These breakdowns are dope as fuck
Could it be that the age over 25 group relate more to the over 40 rappers since they are a dying breed when it comes to lyrics, thus they keep on staying relevant and the younger group under 25 appreciate more the beats and bass?
68daking68 if you think lyricists are a dying bread you're only listening to mainstream music
Yes I was talking about the ones that were able to go mainstream.
Because in our generation, we didn’t have to bite each others style to stay relevant and still said something at the same time.
you sure? fu-schickens bit off of das fx, and onyx used to bite black moon.
Tribe?
No?
Bryce Kaminski Big hit right here soundcloud.com/bennett-tran/hurtinallthetime
Triiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiibe
YES! I fucked with We Got It From Here.
a tribe called quest?
Is it just me or does Em in the live sound better than the recorded Walk on Water
over 40 and getting better every album : ROYCE 5 9
Yup. Been thinking about this exactly topic Murs. Not sure if it's because I'm turning 40 or maybe because the older hip-hop heads are the ones making the kind of hip-hop I still like, but either way, I agree. Murs still rules the world.
I liked the video, but...
There at least should've been a shoutout to MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, Kool Keith and 3-6 Mafia...
agreed
Those are the kinds of diss tracks we need to be hearing more about!!
Black Thought = GOAT.
Elie Baliss THEY DONT FUCKING HEAR YOU
ruclips.net/video/prmQgSpV3fA/видео.html
Definitely one of the most slept on for years
Eminem = GOAT
Master Of The Craft no
Right on. And i can't wait for the Trill OG to drop. RIP Pimp C
what about DOOM though?
One of the best ones yet this brought me to tears I grew up hearing that rap was a phase look at us now....
You know De La Soul is one of the best rap groups ever when my 14 year old told me 3 Feet High & Rising is one of the best albums he’d ever listened to.
You need to revisit this in 2019. It's gotten so much more important for people to understand. Growing up doesn't mean you need to change music taste.
No Cube? I just saw him at ACL in October with Dub C he ain’t slowing down at all.
Think where Easy E would be if he wasn't so into living the life!😞
Good video!! The youth and old need to merge and help each other into the future and build the culture! Once again great video
Ummm...KRS-One?
In 13 n Good he non ironically bragged about fucking a 13 year old. He also has a song talking about how women complain about rape too much
That track was taboo for taboo's sake. So take it easy, mang.
“Rap isn’t a sport, at its best it’s an art, at its worst it’s a business.”🗣🗣
Wu Tang Forever
I turned 39 two months ago and have mad appreciation for this list and everyone who's on it. To me, the Black Thought cypher was not only my introduction to the man, but was my top hip hop moment of 2017!
I think this list is endless including Bone Thugs n Harmony and Wu Tang Clan
nystagmus no, it isn't endless, max it has to end somewhere around 7 billion
Aiden Wood lol thats true
Murs always comin with some interesting discussions and topicals. keep it debonair.
rappers in their 40 still relate ...plus we see the world different at 40 so our rappers still are relevant...hell hip hop is in its 40s as a genre
