  • Will Smith (AKA The Fresh Prince) has definitely left his mark on Hip Hop, but he seems to be constantly and unjustly overlooked whenever the greats are mentioned. Even after all he’s done for the culture, why does Hip Hop hate Will Smith? Let’s break it down…

I remember back in the height of the pandemic in 2020 I was going through some shit. Couple of close friends had just passed, I was still struggling to get out of my old life as an addict and dealer. I was driving at like, 2 A.M. on the interstate on a warm summer night, windows down, road empty, and 'Summertime' came on and like... everything gelled for a moment. I dunno how to word this, but it was the first time in a long time I'd felt alright. So yeah, I have respect for the man.

If there's a hip-hop critique of Will Smith it's that he was never able to break out of that simplistic pre-1988 rap flow. He already sounded old school even in the late 80s and early 90s.

? Big Willie Style didn't ahev that style. His flow on getting jiggy with it was more modern.

not true at all his flow on Gettin Jiggy Wit It (and the whole Big Willie Style album) definitely was a late 90's flow, and his albums in the 2000's flow were very modern

I watched this video a year ago when it came out and I thought it was really insightful and it made me rethink Will Smith. For what it is worth I am a 42 year old white guy that went to high school in the 90's when hip hop was exploding. I came back to this video when Joyner Lucas did the song/video "Will" because I remembered how much I liked this HipHopDX video and it made me think.

I think it has to do with the despair of the nation for decades through the mid 90s. It would also explain the rise in popularity of grunge. The youth were angry, and wanted that reflected in their popular culture. Plus the popularity of cultural (African American and Italian American) exploitative films in the 80s and 90s that romanticized gang violence. The Vader theory magnified a 1000.

Doomie Sonofprince I agree. Will and Jazz had a HUGE hand in the commercialization of Hip Hop, but they had some help. You gotta mention RUN DMC, The Fatboys, MC Hammer, and a slew of other acts in the 80s that had a big part in that too

Will Smith is a legend, but his acting career surpassed his rap career.
While he had a few dope albums with DJ Jazzy Jeff, they're pretty dated in that corny '80s rap sound which doesn't help his case, and his solo albums were hardly classics. A few big hits here and there, but that's it.
Dope storytelling MC with bars and punchlines, sure. But he doesn't have the body of work to be up there with the GOATs.

I feel inclined to agree, but not on the basis of just hating on the nice guy for being a nice guy.
Villains and antiheroes just seem more attractive and interesting to talk about, whether it's movies or books or personae. People just love the bad guy. It's this fascination with the darker side of humanity that for some reason keeps drawing us in...
I'm sure there's some literarary, philosophical, or psychoanalytic determination as to why. But I am not that organized in my thoughts to give an explanation, so I just take it as this social cultural that somehow grabs our attention and doesn't let go.

ALL FACTS. It’s very easy to overlook these impeccable stats, because of what the accepted norm is. And your point about Drake, spot-on! Having to occasionally mention some gangsta shyt (knowing he ain’t no thug), so he can be “edgy” enough for the mainstream. Smh. Will definitely never faked to be something he’s not. He kept it 1000 through it all, and continues to. Plus he played ALI. Nuff said.

Me and Will Smith are almost exactly the same age, Sept-Dec same year. I'm a white guy that grew up listening to everything, my first taste of Rap was the Sugar Hill Gang, then came UTFO many more but I don't want to waste time on here. Then came DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince! Man I loved them guys! Back in those days all of us black and white listened to everything. You turn on your "boom box" and you could here TFP and Def Leppard in the same 15 minutes, then they would play Michael Jackson, and I loved his work too!!!! What did it mean then??? NOTHING! It meant you liked all types of music! Then in the end of 1988 came NWA, and I tried to listen to it, but it did not have the same effect as TFP, or Michael or LL UTFO. It pissed me off bad, the rap scene or hip hop however you want to put it became so culturally diverse that I refused to listen to it. It was almost like Racism took form as music. But wtf do I know, I only grew up with it and watched it unfold into the mess we have today...

We gotta remember that people were trying to punk Pitbull until he punched someone publicly in the face on stage for getting money thrown at him.
Guess what. Pitbull never changed. He stuck with the club music suited persona.
Will Smith should have stuck with the club rapper too. As a matter of fact, he should make a comeback or at least tour.

But he's not an actual emcee, he doesn't make you feel anything from around the block or that feeling you get in your chest from certain punchlines and competitive flows and patterns. Hollywood made him as big as he is bc his movies are great but his music isn't. The industries make his music seem great but real emcees know that's not true

    Will is always a GOAT.
Though this conversation has been had before...
    Here.
He's usually left off lists because he's no longer seen as a rapper.
The last time he rapped for real was when kids were kids.
And, even then he was an actor.
The last time he was strictly a rapper was when him, Jeff, P.E., Salt & Peppa, and everybody else was boycotting the Grammy's.
    He's transcended the title.
    And, the sound is different.
    Kids call Ross old.
