    Has rap gone soft? Not R&B soft, like we covered in last week’s Breakdown, but is Hip Hop too in its feelings these days? Is there too much heartbreak, depression, suicide and self medication? Is there room for emotionally charged music in a market typically dominated by gun busting, bird flipping, and ultra materialism? Well that question is pointless because currently, one of Hip Hop’s most chart-topping songs is all about depression and suicide prevention. It’s obvious that there’s room, but is all this Emo music killing the vibe? Or is it exactly what we all need to hear? Is Emo Rap the best thing for the culture? Let’s break it down…

    You need everything in rap. You need emotional songs, party songs, hard songs, intellectual songs. That's why hip hop is so great. Honestly, you gotta be real talented if all your songs are the same topic, and I'm still listening. Diversity and versatility is important when it comes to hip hop.

    • @Anwawesome
      @Anwawesome 5 лет назад +3

      All genres have diversity, and being diverse and versatile is important to all genres. Not only is hip hop great, but rock, electronic, pop etc. as well. There's lots of music out there. What we need now is more diversity in the mainstream/the music charts. I think there used to be that variety in the mainstream in the previous decades, but now? Not so much. Just look at the Billboard Hot 100 and you'll see what I mean.

Hip Hop is one of, if not the, most popular genre so letting people know that they're not alone when it comes to dealing with shit helps a lot. Hip Hop used to be instagram, people would tend to just show the highlights of their life and pretend the bad shit didn't exist, now more and more rappers are showing people what it's actually like. So glad I found this channel, so good. I listen to a variety of genres, rappers, etc. But I have a lot of respect for artists who talk about their struggles with depression ,anxiety, etc. Yeah we need the hype music, the music about fucking, weed, etc but we also need solid rap songs like Humble, and so much more. Kendrick really does a good job of talking about some serious issues like violence against minorites, gangs ,etc.

      that's because emotional shit is looked down upon, people expect a man to be solid which is hella stupid. I think the explosion of emo rap is a good thing, shows up and coming dudes that you don't have to be a brick wall to be a man, that you're allowed to feel hurt or angry or sad and it's okay to talk about it.
      Times change, words change too. its time to drop emo as an insult and realise emotions shuld be shared, not bottled up.

    • @SSSupCreeper
      @SSSupCreeper 6 лет назад +16

      there's nothing wrong with vulnerabilty, it's just the word and it's connotation with how it's been used, I just dislike the usual aesthetic and imagery people associate with the word when they hear it. I'd just much rather use a term like "introspective" since it still gets the point across

    Another great breakdown. I definitely learned some things from this. One thing I would say is y'all should of mentioned The Weeknd's House of Balloons mixtape. Even though, it's in the realm of alternative R&B, I still believe that it influenced the whole sub genre of emo rap. It's undeniable. Since then, rappers like Uzi Vert and Nav have used melodies in their raps and they do talk a lot about some deep dark shit.

    Cant deny that "Emo Rap" is a huge part of Hiphop now. Its better this way. Why would you want your listeners, the people of the world, to hear of violence and crimes all day up in they ears. Its destructive and pointless.
    Having artists open up about deeper issues that most ppl would calla nd consider 'emo' is a blessing to the world. Artists like Kid Cudi and Logic are CHANGING PEOPLES LIVES out here with they music. Thats 900MILLION times better than ANYTHING these mumble rappers are yapping out here. Influencing lean and xanax to teens. We dont need that in hiphop anymore.
