Has rap gone soft? Not R&B soft, like we covered in last week’s Breakdown, but is Hip Hop too in its feelings these days? Is there too much heartbreak, depression, suicide and self medication? Is there room for emotionally charged music in a market typically dominated by gun busting, bird flipping, and ultra materialism? Well that question is pointless because currently, one of Hip Hop’s most chart-topping songs is all about depression and suicide prevention. It’s obvious that there’s room, but is all this Emo music killing the vibe? Or is it exactly what we all need to hear? Is Emo Rap the best thing for the culture? Let’s break it down…

If "keepin' it real" is as big a deal in the hip hop culture, then "emo" rap should be respected. What's realer than pain?
@@edgarordaz6054 stop.

Reality is realer than pain
DSBM is the realist genre then
Emo rap is a badly coined term, nothing wrong with rappers trying to open up
MrKing8050 Emo rap makes me think more about Rap rock bands than what this was about
Hearing "emo rap" had me thinking something completely different. They coulda came up with a different thing to call it
Emo is actually the perfect word to describe it. The shift in hip hop is pretty analogous to the shift in hardcore punk from which the word emo stems.
It should be called punk rap
MrKing8050 not to mention Emo stands for emotional aka 'opening up' 🤔
Emo rap is a reflection of the state of consciousness of the generation as a whole. Not everyone, but a lot of kids. In 10 years it wont be as big, just like gangsta rap.
whatever happened to actual conscious rap?
Four years later and the emo rap bubble popped
@@johnindigo5477 yeah, a good portion of its leaders died
@@johnindigo5477 it’s still pretty big. Trippie redd; lil uzi vert; poorstacy; etc are still pretty popular.
@@raymondrembert6870 yeah but is it the same amount of hype as when this video came out? The artist you mentioned are still popular but they've all been popular for at least four years. Whose a new name from 2022?
You need everything in rap. You need emotional songs, party songs, hard songs, intellectual songs. That's why hip hop is so great. Honestly, you gotta be real talented if all your songs are the same topic, and I'm still listening. Diversity and versatility is important when it comes to hip hop.
All genres have diversity, and being diverse and versatile is important to all genres. Not only is hip hop great, but rock, electronic, pop etc. as well. There's lots of music out there. What we need now is more diversity in the mainstream/the music charts. I think there used to be that variety in the mainstream in the previous decades, but now? Not so much. Just look at the Billboard Hot 100 and you'll see what I mean.
Exactly.
Anwawesome Yeah but the Hip Hop culture is very different from Pop. In Pop music they do game shows and advertising and go home. Hip Hop is very different and is a fusion of all you listed. So it's easy to make mistakes
@@kidsoulworld6879 You deserve a sub
Rap isn't just one genre. There's room for everything.
even the trash
Nick L rap is just one genre nigga
Hip-Hop is the genre and imo Rap is one of it's many sub-genres.
Hazel Ninja What? Rap is the genre, hip hops the sub genre
hip hop is the culture and embodies it all Rap is the genre the sub genres would be something like emorap, whatever u would call most lousiana rap?(boosie wayne master p after he left the westcoast sound), trap , g funk , boom bap.
Love, Depression, Anxiety, etc. are all shared in the human experience.
Music is an expression of the human experience. Of course they go together.
To deny those feelings is to lose out on humanity. IMO.
Christopher Moreno Couldn't have said it better myself.
Drew Peterson big fat W
Christopher may thing I can say about that is just some people have it easy and just haven't had those feelings. Either that or they try and ignore those feelings. I know for me personally I'm extremely happy and at peace with everything, so I just can't relate to those songs personally.
JW I completely agree that not every song is going to be relatable to everyone. That's the great part about music. But hip hop should be allowed to be exploratory and diverse, because people are exploratory and diverse.
Christopher Moreno oh yeah, that’s why I’m not complaining and always respect others’ opinion on music. You have no clue what something means to someone else unless you’re them
What about Kendrick Lamar? "Sing about me", "U" was literally about him struggling with depression and thinking about suicide, even on his new album with songs like FEAR. And FEEL.
Andrew Olsen Sing About Me will always be my favorite song by Kendrick
Brandon McCall and also ScHoolBoyQ with Blind Threats and Prescription on Oxymoron.

I'd rather hear music from their heart than them pretending to be something they're not.
To me, hip hop is expressing yourself anyway you can, whether it’s frontin on the streets, releasing your trauma, or delivering an important message. Hip hop is one of the purest art forms in my eyes. Hope others can see it too

gettin in touch with your emotions is one of the best things that can happen too a genre

Facts fuck these dumbasses that deny their emotions they're the most fucked up deep down
blindskywatcher I agree but as we see everywhere. Some people can't handle their emotions and think the whole world is a micro aggression that triggers everyone and is out to get them. Leftist snowflakes are the best example of a group of people who can't handle emotions.

I know a lot of people were like me when it came out. It was so different I didn't give it a chance and refused to for a while. Then I finally listened to it a couple years after release and realized it's actually good.
It's more that people didn't understand it when it came out. As MURS said, people expected it to be like his first 3 albums, but it was something completely different and it took a while for people to appreciate it especially since Kanye was a trailblazer with his sound. It's a well-respected album now.
Just cuz you're sensitive and open doesn't make you emo. It just shows you're mature. Emo is a lot more angst and rage, not a bad thing, just different
Agreed
bob thornton Love the number of DOOM fans I see on this channel.
Who remembered atmosphere trying to find a balance on Tony hawk underground 2
Javohn Macklin that’s how i discovered Atmosphere! Been pretty much obsessed ever since
I remember Atmosphere from the Fight Night champion soundtrack.
Thanks Murs for the video. As an old school m.c. from the beginning I always felt a rapper should always speak from the heart. The real always shows through the music. Gangsta, Emo, Educating, whatever. Just be real and don't be fake because hip hop heads will see right through it and you get no respect. Flyby fans are just that. They are in for the moment. People who love hip hip will always be there. Thanks again. You've actually given me a little more respect for the new school artists.
The way I see this is that rap is going through its angsty grunge phase like rock did in the 90's. Rap in the early 2010's and 2000's were rap's hairmetal phase pretty much.
FightSilence
I agree rap is the new rock metal
Well said, I agree
Fascinating comparison. I can understand that Perspective.
Funny you said, not long ago there was an interview where Gene Simmons said rappers were the new rockstars. True af.
I mean hairmetal sucks but other than that yeah
So Many Tears wasn't on Thug Life Vol. 1, its off Me Against the World for anyone looking.
Wanna fight?!
Chris Gunner I was thinking the exact same thing when he said that.
Dear Mama was also on Me Against the World. Do people just want to pretend that album never happened or something?
Lance Strider for real, me against the world was pacs G.O.A.T album
Thank you, EmoRap. You’ve helped me to discover other genres of music like blues, jazz, son, classic rock, and punk.
Is this really Murs? Like Murs from Murs and Slug? Damn dude I spent my whole twenties discovering this whole genre of underground rap I had missed with Atmosphere and Felt. Damn, I get so much nostalgia.

It basically is..
If you immediately think of them you're a child. They're barley new. And you children talk as if they started this...stop.
This is why we should take internet from children.
When you look at the suicide statistics, this shit is VERY important. Hip Hop is one of, if not the, most popular genre so letting people know that they're not alone when it comes to dealing with shit helps a lot. Hip Hop used to be instagram, people would tend to just show the highlights of their life and pretend the bad shit didn't exist, now more and more rappers are showing people what it's actually like. Long may it continue.
Biggest killer of men under 45 is themsleves
I'm pretty sure recently it came out that suicide is killing more people than homicide, its terrifying
Jordan this^. As a nigga who used to look for rap that I could relate to emotionally but couldn't find any, this new wave that revolves around it is a blessing cause I like the sound and relate to it more than gang rap
i'd say the future of emo rap is Corbin (spooky black), yet he refuses the fame.
Man I had to leave spooky alone nigga had me depressed af lol. But man's can sing like a MF angel. What's your favorite spooky black song fam?
Growing up in Minnesota most of us idolize atmosphere and brother Ali. Most of the people I met had an appreciation for emotional or consciously aware lyrics and newer styles were not as accepted
If I wanna hear "emotional (emo) rap" I'll play some Cudi. All I need
Solo Dolo is the Epitome of Emo Rap.
SOZZYLAND true, but a lot of his songs are. Lol Cudi music really helped me in high school and still till this day. No other artists music comes close to in regards to "emo" rap imo
krfan1234 man on the moon a classic . Played that shit all day yesterday for the anniversary
Commandosoap777 it really is bro

Slug finally getting some love
well they're homeboys, so it's not too hard to see why.
Atmosphere is dope
Yes. Yes it is. A lot of ppl can relate to that. Talking about gangs and crip walking is getting boring. Nobody wants to hear that shit. That's why Game ain't relevant no more. Eve tho i like him. There has to bo variety. We have ENOUGH of street shit. There's room for more categories people.
MR. X so facts
Ali Chaudry yeah i think the only mc who had the perfect balance was pac.
i think capital steez had a great balance
David G yeah word rip
MR. X Whether you like it or not that kind of Rap is needed. Rap is embedded from the streets and nothing will ever change that. It's easy to spew stereotypes to make that type of Rap look bad but you wouldn't understand because you didn't live it or aren't from the struggle.
So glad I found this channel, so good. I listen to a variety of genres, rappers, etc. But I have a lot of respect for artists who talk about their struggles with depression ,anxiety, etc. Yeah we need the hype music, the music about fucking, weed, etc but we also need solid rap songs like Humble, and so much more. Kendrick really does a good job of talking about some serious issues like violence against minorites, gangs ,etc.
Abe ayyo u is the shit that made me love Kendrick
love the shoutout to Atmosphere especially since y’all are in Felt together, also I have to comment and obligatory Eyedea acknowledgment, R EYE P to a legend 🖤🤘🏼
I just saw Atmosphere a couple weeks ago in Michigan, he played “God’s Bathroom Floor” it was amazing.
What is so bad about showing your feelings? If Deathmetal can talk about cutting the heads of your enemies and at the same time show you how weak we are then i don't get why rap can't
Lmfao
I'm truly surprised you didn't acknowledge some of Kendrick Lamar's work. Especially the track FEAR. on his latest album.
Dalia Chatters and feel.
Dalia Chatters u
ryanb01 U had me fucked up.
Jonathan yeah makes u think about your shitty times
What about U
I've just recently started watching your videos. about 5 now. You speak the truth and you have a new fan.
A Boogie Wit da hoodie’s “Artist” album is the emo rap I can easily relate to
Another great episode, Murs!
The death of Peep brought me back here. I didn't listen to him, I just remembered I heard of him here. I checked out awful things, it's actually pretty good. I wish I listened to him when he was alive.
I have so much respect to you for openly talking about all sub-genres of rap and emo songs open-mindedly.
When Life Gives You Lemons, you Paint that Shit Gold
That's better than the rappers that talk all about drugs and party life. You call that songwriting? Pffft. With all the diss tracks, "party life" rap, and mumble rap, I'd rather take this "emo" rap that has ACTUAL meaning and has SOUL.
its not soulful.. its devilish
you dont know about rap then m8. except for the mumble rap. right there you are right
Origin Music says who
The Homie White haha so close-minded
Origin Music I like emo rap, but without turn up party music, parties would be boring as shit.
Music is art. Art is expression. Expression is emotion. Emotion is music.
Hey there, I just found out this channel and whatched a couple videos and wow, this is great! Peace from Brazil ;)
Great video man
Surprised that Eyedea was not mentioned, Even Shadows Have Shadows is one of the best hiphop tunes ever made. And that shit was emotional af. But I am happy to see you shed some light on Atmosphere. The Godlovesugly album was absolutely genius!
Amen. Much love to the whole Rhymesayers crew.
Hey man my opinion is that it is perfectly fine for rappers to open up about there emotions and is actually good for him and his audience.
dope breakdown as always
1:28
Atmosphere is the best!
"God Loves Ugly" is one of the most underrated/important albums of all time!
Hip-hop seems to have hit puberty a little late.
It’s going through its “You Just Don’t Get Me, Dad” phase when it’s 40 years old by this point. Did everyone seem to skip over Will Smith’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand” or...?
Rest In Paradise Dreamer Boy 💔
Talk more on Slug and Atmosphere! They deserve their own video, rarely mentioned by anyone talking about hip hop.... Thank you for this! :)
Quite an informative video,. Thanks a lot)
"AAAAAAATMOSPHERE!!"
-Slug
the word "emo" is like the epitome of cringe
Santiago Barrios yea i dont like saying that shit except in a negative connotation
that's because emotional shit is looked down upon, people expect a man to be solid which is hella stupid. I think the explosion of emo rap is a good thing, shows up and coming dudes that you don't have to be a brick wall to be a man, that you're allowed to feel hurt or angry or sad and it's okay to talk about it.
Times change, words change too. its time to drop emo as an insult and realise emotions shuld be shared, not bottled up.
there's nothing wrong with vulnerabilty, it's just the word and it's connotation with how it's been used, I just dislike the usual aesthetic and imagery people associate with the word when they hear it. I'd just much rather use a term like "introspective" since it still gets the point across
Noah Bin Ladin those bands are usually what I associate with the term emo but it seems like most people use that label when describing post hardcore bands.
Santiago Barrios the word of epitome is the epitome of cringe
Atmosphere!! Also holy shit is that Murs?!
I was so excited to see the guaranteed video bc I thought murs was gonna play a clip of it
Murs is the OGenius
You mean just like what Justin Hunte did? Y'all crazy, why you gonna watch the breakdown if you're not going to involve yourself with the discussion.
Mike
He doesn't determine what rap is though. He's just bring up a topic for us to dicuss about. In the end, it's all an opinion, not a fact.
That needs to be a mixtape title.
Mike nice stolen insult.
even murs has emo songs, "the pain" from murs 3:16 the 9th edition hit me when i heard it, i was on a cold streak at that time, not getting much pussy so i could relate, i remember picking it the album at tower records a couple of days later after it was released. that whole album is dope and that song stood up with me. loved it.
I think it's nice that MC's are shedding more light on darker and more vulnerable, because it's a nice change of pace, and it can have positive outcomes like Logic's 1-800.
when i seen you were doing a piece about emo rap, i was hoping you would reference slug, the felt album you guys done done is soooo good.
Another great breakdown. I definitely learned some things from this. One thing I would say is y'all should of mentioned The Weeknd's House of Balloons mixtape. Even though, it's in the realm of alternative R&B, I still believe that it influenced the whole sub genre of emo rap. It's undeniable. Since then, rappers like Uzi Vert and Nav have used melodies in their raps and they do talk a lot about some deep dark shit.
Music trends are always a reflection pf the times. Since these emo concepts in music arn't that relativly new, I'd say that the era we live in just facilitates this trend in music more welcomly than say ten or fifteen years ago
such a dope video
Hi, I'm a new sub. Just wanted to say thanks for your videos. Not just for your thoughtful viewpoint, but you're showing me artists I might otherwise miss.

whats your opinion about shadow rap/horror core? and artists like suicide boys, ghostemane and such?
Gillet Loic Holy shit there is horror rap? Damn rap truly is a huge genre
That One Guy at 7/11 damn where have you been. Horror core isn't even underground.
That One Guy at 7/11 one of my first rap albums was horrorcore in the 90's. They have RZA in it as a main member they care called Gravediggaz. I recommend the 6 Feet Deep album.
Eminem used to be horror core before he hit mainstream. Well, I guess some of his songs still is horrorcore. and i don't listen to these guys but ICP is horrorcore too.
Dehumanized don't even mention ICP, they are a joke. Their shit is hardly rap. This coming from a former fan

a year ago today i saw Sluggle for the first time. his music has helped me a whole lot after my mom passed.
Cant deny that "Emo Rap" is a huge part of Hiphop now. Its better this way. Why would you want your listeners, the people of the world, to hear of violence and crimes all day up in they ears. Its destructive and pointless.
Having artists open up about deeper issues that most ppl would calla nd consider 'emo' is a blessing to the world. Artists like Kid Cudi and Logic are CHANGING PEOPLES LIVES out here with they music. Thats 900MILLION times better than ANYTHING these mumble rappers are yapping out here. Influencing lean and xanax to teens. We dont need that in hiphop anymore.
Nick Angele I semi agree with you...but you gotta understand that a lot of "gangsta" rappers are only rapping about their life and environment
And a lot of them started doing it because media doesnt pick up on what happens in our country, that's why they were after 2pac. Not to be #WOKE(cause that shits annoying) or anything but they were noticing shit that was happening that nobody talked about so they spoke up about issues and problems they saw and heard everyday, labels didnt even wanna sign pac because he was rapping about girls being raped and living homeless pregnant as a single mother while addicted (I think I could b wrong) to drugs

Missed out on Murs doing the breakdowns, since I followed JT to the Company Man, dope!!!

I like that old school "emo rap" but I can't fuck with this new wave like Lil peep, Lil uzi vert etc
Lil peep is so edgy he makes butcher knives look blunt
Papi Hokage listen to book of soul by absoul and I'm sorry by jonyer Lucas . There's hope for the new generation
