  • If you're going off-grid (and perhaps even if you aren't) composting your waste makes a lot of sense. From my findings, The Nature's Head composting toilet is the best option hands down if you're taking the (which I highly suggest) the composting route. See link below to purchase. BTW, this isn't a paid endorsement or anything like that. My Dad bought this toilet with his own money based on my suggestion, nothing else.

    A Good description. When most of the Scandinavian countries have been using composting toilets in office buildings as well as private homes for decades it is time we got on board. These countries are far ahead of us in conserving water and helping the environment. It isn't as difficult an adjustment as it might seem; it just takes a willingness to try new things. It is very easy to maintain as he described and not at all a bad odor as you might fear. Nor is it upsetting in any way when you empty it as instructed. It is far less stressful to manage then changing a beloved child's diaper or cleaning up after your child can be at times. I recommend finding someone who has a composting toilet, if you're needing that helpful advice in person first.

    Thats pretty great, next to an incinolet you don't need the extra power and you can use old coffee grounds and tea material.
    Adding coffee grounds to a composting toilet can help reduce odors and make it easier to get back on the grind after using the toilet. Coffee grounds have natural odor-fighting properties and can be used as a litter material to cover solid waste after use. You can add coffee grounds in any quantity that smells pleasant to you, and you can also combine them with other litter materials like coconut coir, sawdust, or peat moss.

    I think compost toilets are a great step away from wasting clean water, and energy, resources, and chemicals in sanitation. But having the compost without a biodegradable bag seems a little unsanitary? reminds me of my cats litter box. w/o a bag the canister will get dirty. Things will stick. Wouldnt it be easier to clean that way too? Also, how do you clean the deposit area if stuff gets all over the sides? How often does a compost toilet need a deep cleaning and where would you hose it down? Where do you plan to empty your liquids?

      I have thess same questions too. Also when u clean it would you put it in the urine section and disposd of it and where do you dump it at outside????

    • @Mindofliz
      @Mindofliz 6 лет назад +1

      You can't use a bag because there is a mechanism that you can hand turn (from the outside) inside the toilet, that connects to both ends. With these types of toilets, you are supposed to use some kind of compost/fertilizer material. A big thing to use is blocks of coconut fiber, and cedar chips. You mix those together in the toilet, then once you go, the poop mixed with the fertilizer. It also dries out quite a lot, and doesn't smell at all. Once you dump the cannister, its easy to just rinse out.

    I really don't like that relatively small target for the poo ... at 68 years old, my poo comes in many different compositions.
    I wonder how much water(maybe with vinegar), needs to be sprayed(into the "solid" bin), to "complete", the job ...

    • @BibbidiBobbidiByyyye

      I've heard a lot of good things about this toilet and that the size of the hole doesn't seem to affect aim for solid waste, for kids or people with unfortunate bowel issues ((sorry your body is mean sometimes)). As for the the solution to spray, I think it's a 50/50 Vinegar/Water mix for the liquids tank and then just 100% Vinegar for the solids, and that's just to clean the inside of the bowl itself so you don't disturb the ecosystem with other chemicals once it trickles down into the tanks.
      I could be wrong, hopefully not though. Hope that helps. :)

    Yeah, you have to go with what will work best for your own situation. If it we're just me this would work well but... With a family where IBS runs rampant and members who won't adjust their eating habits of spicy foods and gallons of caffeine, two boys who from potty training onward won't limit their use of toilet paper, two young ladies with massive menstrual.issues, I would be up to my elbows in it constantly. But to whomever this would work for I think it is a good idea.

      I agree. I want a flusher. so one needs a water cleaning system. so perhaps a grate, a settling tank, then a bubbling tank, then a sand filter and lastly som uv light. Is that enought to get rid of the poop before drinking it agaiin? I was thinking one would just dry the poop from the grate and from the settling tank. and then perhaps burn it.

    Thank you for a very informative video. My husband has been trying to get me to consider a composting toilet for when we go full time RV, but I have been resistant. I prefer the idea of just flush and it's gone....except I keep hearing how nasty it is to dump black tanks, and we'd like the ability to boondock or go with limited utilities. Your video makes composting toilets seem less "gross" than I had thought.... I am beginning to do my research now......

    Great dump tanks if your smart enough to know how to use them. We have 4 of them in our off grid cabin rentals with no problems till city people show up and didn’t read the rental description before making reservations. We even walk people through the process before leaving them on their own, but for some reason that can’t remember what we explained or follow the directions on the wall next to the toilet 🚽 I never have issues with real outdoor people and they all seem to love it and have no problems with the simple directions. Some people just can’t go a single night without their luxuries or get grossed out at the dumbest things... I know longer book my rentals online with out communication with the renters so I can personally explain what my off grid rentals are all about and what to expect when staying. It’s definitely not for everyone and for the ones it’s not I personally rather they find somewhere else to stay anyways instead of listening to them complaining about my toilet or no WiFi connection in the mountains.

    "Then there's the 5 gal bucket which, actually isn't a bad way to go..." For anyone who doesn't/can't pee and poop in perfect little spaces. Or anyone at all. I vote for the bucket and a bag of sawdust, coconut coir, or sphagnum moss, etc, on the side. Clean up after yourself and cover your deposit after every use, and no smell, no mess..... Cost. Bucket free or a couple bucks and toilet seat is minimal at Amazon. I might use some garbage bags too if you don't have your own property to deposit the composted waste. Best is to collect urine separately as possible but not a problem when it does get included.

      Tiny House Listings where do you get the moss?

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад +5

      Becky Doyle, you can get such materials anywhere they sell gardening supplies...
      Though, you should mix it with something like dried hemp stalk to help it work better as composting requires air for the microbes to work and the powdery peat moss can be a little too compact for that to work 100% well...
      The stalk also helps break up the waste and help it mix with the cover/bulking material...
      Companies like SunMar who sell composting toilets also sell bags of pre-mixed materials to use... It would be called "Bulking material" and that'll save you the trouble of mixing your own batch.
      But you can basically use any material that adds carbon to the mix and helps absorb the moisture to help dry out the waste, which helps keep it from smelling until the composting process can do its work and kill off the harmful pathogens and bacteria...
      You can also us such materials as coconut coir, bark chips, ash and pieces of paper, leaves, etc.
      Basically, Human waste will smell the worst when wet and especially when mixed with urine and that's one of the reasons that models like the Nature's Head divert the urine in addition to helping keep the waste dry.
      "Wood Shavings" from any wood except Cedar, ideally light and curly shavings but saw dust can work too on its own but with the wood shavings you can mix them with peat moss in about 60% wood shavings and 40% peat moss to work in most composting toilets.
      If you use something like Invirolet's Flush Smart VF or SunMar's Central Flush system, which means it actually flushes and you only have to deal with a remote composting bin then the ratio is 75%-100% wood shavings and 25%-0% peat moss... Reason being the urine is diluted with water in those systems and thus less odor to deal with.
      Proper composting basically just requires sufficient oxygen for the aerobic composting, moisture content from 45 to 70%, temperature between 104 °F to 122 °F (40 °C and 50 °C), and Carbon to nitrogen ratio of 25:1...
      But Winters won't hurt it, just pause the process until it gets warm enough again... or you can go into more advance composting methods like hot composting (only do if you know what you're doing), which can use the effect of composting in that it generates heat to speed up the process and allow it to be used even in cold environments...
      In fact, hot composting can be used to heat your house and hot water if you're off grid and lack other means of generating abundant heat... Or just a way to do some Winter gardening...

    @kcjoe82 7 лет назад

    • @theriseofslimer4011
      @theriseofslimer4011 7 лет назад

      The solid waste is composted for soil. I don't know what happens to liquid waste.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад +3

      Composting is just taking advantage of the nature's own process of recycling waste back into the natural elements of healthy soil...
      Beneficial microbes eat the waste and break it down into its component parts and the harmful pathogens and bacteria are killed off in the process.
      It does take a certain mass to complete the process so small compost toilets like Nature's Head are not complete composters... They just start the process... So when it comes time to dump the container you just take it outside to a bigger composting bin and dump the contents into it, add more cover material and then you can leave it to complete the composting process...
      The outdoor compost bin can be just about anything... A barrel, a squared off area made with some pallets or wire mess, etc. The pile just needs to be able to breath as the microbes need air to do their work...
      While you just refill the container with cover and seed material and it's set to be used again until the next time you need to dump it...
      On the Fy Nyth channel, she did a video on the dumping of the Nature's Head you can check out...
      When the composting is finished, you can usually just dump it around some nearby trees... If unsure if it's completely composted, just to be on the safe side, simply don't use it for any fruits or vegetable plants... Nature will take care of it from that point...
      As for the liquid waste... It contains nitrogen, which can be useful for nitrogen loving plants... So you can usually just water it down and the give it to those types of plants... While urine is usually considered sterile so it can be dumped with less concern...
      The Nature's Head has a reservoir container in the front part for the urine and you can just disconnect it and dump it, you can even take it to a regular toilet and dump it there if unsure on local rules...
      Other composting toilets may simply have a urine diverter that leads to a small pipe exhaust point and simply pours out onto the street or you can hook up a black tank to contain it and then dump it at a RV dump station as another alternative...

      Believe it or not, this one is a couple inches higher than a typical toilet. To get the solids out, you remove the top (sorry I didn't show that) and simply dump it somewhere. By the time you dump if, most of the poop has already broke down into compost.

I don't get how your supposed to empty the compost chamber?! he lifted the seat, but I didn't see handles or ....? looks like you need 3 hands at least!? one to hold up seat and two to somehow remove that square chamber with 3 months worth of " deposits"!? I was under the impression that venting needed to be at least at the height of the toilet or higher. Is there any issue with running it through the floor?

    • @tinyhouselistings
      @tinyhouselistings  7 лет назад +1

      No issue at all. We did it through the floor because 1.) The battery for the fan is directly below and 2.) the front of the house is highly visible and we didn't want the vent showing from the front. Nature's head in their documentation says through the floor or wall are both fine.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад

      Since moisture also goes out the vent, it is more ideal for a more direct path but as long as the fan for the exhaust works and is providing enough air flow then it can be plumbed any way that's convenient...

    So the compost/pee just gets thrown in the city dump or you have your own compost dump somewhere? I don't know these things.

    • @tinyhouselistings
      @tinyhouselistings  7 лет назад

      If you're in the city, just throw the compost into a biodegradable garbage bag and then throw into your trash. It's already pretty much dirt when you throw it out with the exception of the last few deposits that haven't had time to break down completely. The pee, you can toss it on a mature tree which is actually good for it. Another option for the compost it to yes, place it in an outdoor compost bin. If you don't like the thought of using human waste as compost for veggies, you can place it around flowers.

    • @persebra
      @persebra 7 лет назад

      Someone said the pee should be diluted with water, 10 parts water to 1 part pee, if you are going to water plants.

    • @mike-pm6xn
      @mike-pm6xn 7 лет назад

      Depends on your pee. If you are someone who eats clean and drinks plenty of water, the pee will be mostly water with barely any smell. If you don't eat very clean and don't drink much water then, yeah, you'll have to dilute the pee.
      I don't know about most plants but maybe some species like more of the pee sediment than others. :)

    • @roxanneworld11
      @roxanneworld11 7 лет назад +1

      Carol Hall well, you should definitely dispose of it in an appropriate way..some people have composting bins or sectioned off areas on their own property..or they can give it to someone they know who uses compost and is willing to take it...otherwise, if your town or county doesn't allow it to be dumped in garbage cans like baby diapers, you'll have to find a legal dump station..but i think the idea, for most people, is to make use of it..otherwise you'll have to choose an alternative toilet that works for *you* and your lifestyle.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, composting toilets like Nature's Head aren't complete systems. So unless disposing of it, like in bio-degradable bags, you should deposit it into a composting bin to complete the process...
      If you can, it's preferable if you can manage a hot compost as that'll ensure killing off all the pathogens in short order and will allow a much faster turn around time of the composting process to final compost.
      But hot composting isn't for everyone and can be dangerous, because of the high heat it can generate, if you don't regulate it properly.
      You can also mix anything else you want to compost into the composting bin, but it's best to have more than one because it's a process and different microbes work during different stages of the process and may unnecessarily compete with each other...
      So works better if you separate into separate piles to not interrupt the process, ideally three should do... But it will still work with one and may just take longer... You don't even necessarily need to turn the pile to help aerate it and there are different methods for doing the composting... Depending on how much oversight of the process you want to handle and whether you'll mix it with other composting materials or not...

      I can't deal with carting waste away... give me a flushing toilet please

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад +2

      If you have it on a property where you can place a storage shed near the house then you can opt for the composting toilets that can Flush!
      Invirolet's FlushSmart VF, SunMar's Central Flush, and the Clivus Multrum are the three commercial units you should be able to find...
      It will literally look like a low water flush toilet but instead of sending it to the sewers it will send it to a composting bin that you won't have to deal with the contents, aside from putting in seed material and checking to make sure it's working every now and then. But otherwise you'd never touch anything on the inside until after it comes out as compost...
      They also have gravity based models that place the composter bin below the toilet that will cost less if the flush models are too high priced for your budget...
      As for disgusting... that's relative... So long as it's done properly, even a basic compost toilet won't smell and you should never have to touch the contents, only the container when you dump the contents into a composter bin to let it complete the composting process...
      It's also better for the environment and helps avoid wasting 2-5 gallons of water per flush... When all is said and done it just becomes part of the soil and none of the original waste will remain...
      While if anything ever goes wrong with a regular flush toilet then that gives new meaning to the word disgusting... Sewage definitely smells and is not something you want to be anywhere near... ever!
      Simply flushing also doesn't exactly keep them clean... Residue tends to remain and if you flush with the lid open then some microscopic particulates can be vapor sprayed up to a couple feet around the toilet... There's a Mythbusters episode covering it...
      Dealing with human waste is just plain disgusting no matter how it's handled but at least with composting you're turning it into something useful and worse case it might smell a little if you're doing it wrong but nowhere near what you get with sewage and it's a lot easier to clean up than sewage... along with being safer because the composting process actually eliminates the pathogens...

    • @Kiria16939
      @Kiria16939 7 лет назад +2

      I get the necessity of composting toilets in certain situations... I'm just saying I couldn't deal with it. Don't think I could ever live off grid permanently because of it.

    I always wanted to try an incinerator toilet. What are your pros and cons?

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 7 лет назад +1

      Cons are it requires power... at least a 20Amp service and it's combusting/cremating the waste... So it's giving off CO and has to be vented...
      There are gas powered versions that will run off propane and a 12v power source...
      While it can give off a burnt smell...
      Pros is all you need to clean up is ashes and the liner inserts you use with each use can usually prevent the need to clean out the toilet unless you have a issue that prevents proper use...

      Incinerator isn't good for off-grid because of power usage. Plus, you have to buy special paper inserts. Also, it runs forever and if you're outside, it smells like, well, poop because burnt into ashes. I don't like the at all.

    • @tinyhouselistings
      @tinyhouselistings  7 лет назад

      Incinerating toilets use LOTS of electricity, are a little noisy, take special paper inserts to operate and if you're outside, the entire area has an ashy smell for like 30 minutes or so. I don't like it at all personally and definitely not ideal for off-grid.
