Very informative! The candid, open discussion is much appreciated. So many other videos on the subject just gloss over or completely avoid the "gross" bits, but your video answered the questions I had that others didn't detail. Subbed.
I'm glad it was helpful! Sometimes you've got to tell it like it is. Thanks for the sub!🙌
Super helpful, and I appreciated how descriptive you were. You answered questions I didn't know I had! This is the model that comes with the tiny house we're purchasing and using as a vacation rental!
Best composting video I’ve seen yet and I’ve watched several!
BTW I’ve ordered this unit largely because of this video, so they owe you a thanks.
Aw, that comment made my day- thanks Joshua! I appreciate you!
Thanks. Soooo helpful. Love that you got really specific. I’m trying to decided between Separett and Incinerator toilet.
This is a really helpful video for people who are curious about tiny home toilet options. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!🥰
Thanks for the great info! I appreciate the candidness. I am currently seeking to buy a composting toilet. You answered my questions.
I love our Separett. We can have both toilets but glad we went with the Separett. Plus, when we had the freeze in Austin we didn't have to worry about water. #we made it through the freeze 🙌🏽. Evergreen!!!
Oh, my gosh, I remember that freeze! I had the regular toilet installed at that time, and let me tell you, I SUFFERED!😱 Separett for the win! I'm glad you know the glory!
@@tinyhouseconcierge Yes, it is!!!
Great tip to keep compostable stuff in the freezer, great information, thanks!
Hello!! Thanks for the information. I have a question, how do you treat the grey waters? Do you have a tank? is it portable also?
Hi Alaska! Good talking to you recently by Zoom and this was sooo helpful. I'm sold.
Yes! So good to meet you. I hope we can talk again soon, and thanks for watching!🙌
I’m so glad you did this video. So many people are curious about composting toilets. You shared really helpful and valuable information. (I would love to see one of these for incinerating toilets…there are a few out there, but love your candor.)
Thanks for watching! I would love to do one about an incinerating toilet. Would it be totally weird of me to use Craigslist to find someone who has one and then ask if I could used it and then film in their bathroom?🙈🤣🤣 Hmm... I might need to work through the details, but I love the idea of a toilet series!😅
@The Tiny House Concierge Not weird at all...you’re doing totally legitimate research. 😇
@@lorettastamps I love the perspective. Stay tuned!😄🤘
Thank you for answering all of the questions I had not known who to ask! The Separett is the one I want in my tiny house. I not feel more certain that’s the right choice.
Of course! I'm happy to help. I'm excited to hear you're going tiny!❤️🙌
Hey thanks from fairbanks. I just bought a tiny house. Well it's small not tiny. But it has a compost toilet without a separator.
I definitely need to upgrade it. Thanks for the video
Very concise. Thank you
Yes! A woman explaining something technical to me! This is everything! Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you so much!!
Fascinating! Thank you!
Thank you. I have appreciated your comments and directions. I’ve enjoyed this video, except for the throwing up part, lol.
Good infos! It will be easier to choose between different type of toilets for my small cabine.
Thanks for going into all the detail!
Always! Haha, got to tell it like it is!😅🤘
Thanks for sharing on RUclips. I learned how compost toilets are much easier to be approved for parking tiny homes, rv’s, etc.. I am listening and watching RUclips videos to be aware of what to do and not do if I ever want to buy. You kept it seriously real and simple for females as we are the ones who need a toilet for multiple purposes more than males. Spraying with vinegar allows you to be cost effective as well as not have harsh chemicals around to breathe. I am 65 years, eleven months and 7 days as of my comments. Thanks for reading. Smiles
What do you do with the bags?
Great video. I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these. Made me laugh too. :D
Thanks for watching, and commenting. I appreciate you! If you have more tiny house questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. My direct contact info can be found at www.TinyHouseConcierge.com Cheers!
Great video but you said you would go over everything. How do you empty it. Do you add anything after you poo like kitty litter. How do you clean it . What do you do with the waste. Thanks
Great job!
We are contemplating this and this is very informative. thanks
Oh, good! I'm glad it was helpful. Are you contemplating the toilet or the tiny house lifestyle or both?😄
Thank you for this - very helpful!
Hi Tracy, the brand is called "BioBag" and the size for the Separett is 'Tall Kitchen.' Thanks for watching!
Where do you dispose the poop?
If you need your body weight to open the poop area. Then it would be pretty awkward to puke in there. Or it'll be half open and you'll make a big mess. I'm a bit of a clean freak so I haven't seen a toilet I'm 100% happy with yet. This composting toilet has too many moving parts with many places needing to be cleaned to keep it hygienic enough for me. So far the best I've seen is the dry flush toilet. But its probably expensive in bags and makes the environment cry.
You are correct that it's not a good toilet to puke in! Haha, I recommend figuring out another option for puking, for sure. As far as the bags for the toilet, they are actually biodegradable, so no worries there. The branded Separett bags are a little pricey, but if you but many Costcos are starting to carry biodegradable trash bags in bulk, so mine are cheap! Thanks for watching!
This was very informative! I seriously considered it and if I move somewhere that does not have septic I would not hesitate to install one. I'm surprised no has asked how you dispose of the bag. I know you live in an area where you can put it in the yard waste/compost bin.I am curious how the compost facility makes sure no pathogens are transferred to the compost they sell? I wonder how many communities have compost pick-up that would allow this?
I'm glad- thanks for watching! I will be putting out a second video this evening that covers the cleaning part. As far as your questions, they're great ones! That makes me want to do a video about that process down the line!😍🙌
I think when the compost heats up it kills most bacteria but I’m not sure regarding infectious pathogens.
Thankbyou so much!!
what type of composting material do you put in the poop bucket, or do you use anything?
Hello! There is no composting material needed in this toilet. There is a fan that dries out the poo, and then you would put the whole bag your giant composting bin if you have those services available. If you don't some municipalities tell you to put the bag in the trash. In the trash always feels weird, but when you think about it, we do the same thing with baby diapers. I'm just drying it out first and eliminating the plastic! Thanks for watching!
I never vomit in a regular toilet anyway. It always seemed gross to me to put my head near a toilet lol if i’m ever nauseated I use a compostable bag and put in to a small desk trash can that I have just for that purpose.
This was a great video. I like that this model can be hooked up directly to grey water so that I wouldn't have to empty a urine container myself. What Separett model is it?
Hi Melissa, I’m glad you found it helpful! This model is the Separett Villa. I absolutely love it. Thanks for watching!💕
Agree - I have one, and no smell - inside or out.
Right?! They are amazing! I never would have believed it. Ha, I feel like I sound like an infomercial, but it's TRUE!😆
Did you mount your toilet in place and do you put toilet paper into your toilet?
Thank you
Hello! The toilet is connected to a vent in the wall, but no, I didn't otherwise mount it. There is a little rubber strip that came with the toilet, but I lost it and never replaced it. I believe it was intended to provide stability. The toilet slid around a tiny bit without it, but it didn't bother me enough to fix it. And yes, I did put toilet paper in the toilet. Although, if I was trying to get it to not fill up so fast, I would sometimes put (ahem *lightly used*) TP in the trash instead of the toilet. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I’m researching for an Article for my blog
Thanks for watching! May I ask what your blog is? I always love to discover a new tiny-house-related blog! 🙂
Where do you put your full bags?
Great question! It depends on where you live. I've contacted various waste management experts, and I've been told different things. If you have professional composting services, you can sometimes put it in that bin. Other municipalities have told me to just put it in the trash. That always feels weird to me, but I guess we put wet baby waste in plastic and throw it away, so maybe dry adult waste in biodegradable film is better? You'll want to ask your local facility. Good luck and thanks for watching!
So where do you take the bag of waste when you change it out?
Hi Gavin! What happens with the bag will depend on your waste management facility. I’ve had some places tell me to throw it in with the yard waste/composting, and others have told me to throw it in the regular trash. That last one feels weird to me, but if you think about it, I guess it’s like baby diapers without the plastic?😅
Watching because an Airbnb has one and don’t know what I will do (If we rent it).
Composting bags just suck. I have a roll that was only 1yr old and had to throw out. I couldn't pick them up out of my 5gal composting toilet with them breaking.
Can you throw wipes in the toilet?
Well, for composting purposes, you'd want to make sure they were compostable. Moisture wise, I would limit the number of wipes you throw in. The occasional wipe probably won't cause an issue, but this toilet works because a fan is constantly running to dehydrate the solid waste. So if you threw a bunch of moist wipes, the fan might not be able to keep up as efficiently.
How many times did I try to hit the Like button, only to realize that I had already Liked this video? 😂😅
Aw, that comment made my day- thank you!🥰
The Thinktank toilet is a similar design, but it is airtight and uses ventilation air from outside the building. Otherwise you are using expensively heated or cooled air from inside the building. Also, men can stand with the Thinktank and really need to sit with the Separett.
Do they use a lot of electricity?
Nope! I pulled this from their website: "The toilet can be operated with 110-240 V AC or with 12 V DC solar cell / battery power. The fan has very low energy consumption of 0.06 kWh / 24h"
If urine goes into grey water, can you use it to water plants?
You know, I'm not sure. That's a great question, though! Maybe a gardener will see this and weigh in!❤
Yes gray water can be used for plants
This was super helpful! Thank you!
I'm glad! Do you live tiny? Or are you thinking about it?😄
@@tinyhouseconcierge Yeah, we are friends on Instagram already. ☺️ - Heather
Very informative indeed , human body tends to produce a lot of waste stuff
I think when the fully functional robots take over then us poor humans will be shamed by our bodily functions and I dread to think what the robots 🤖 will think of us .
Love ya composting toilets, 1 where did you buy it, we totally would love this for our tiny home build.2 what do you do with your poo bags? Just dump in the weekly rubbish? Or bury on your land somewhere?
Hi Niki, this toilet is a Separett. It's their "Villa" model. I didn't buy it separately, as it came installed in the house, but you can purchase them on your own. As far as the poo bag, you'll want to check with waste facilities in your area. In some places, I've been told to put it in with the compostable yard waste, and other places have told me to put it in the trash. In the trash always feels weird, but when you think about it, we do the same thing with baby diapers. I'm just drying it out first and eliminating plastic from the equation! Thanks for watching!
I've been grossed out by van life RUclipsrs dropping bags of poo in any old trash receptacle. I suppose, as she says, it's like diapers, but a human only fills diapers for a couple of years and formed baby turds do get flushed. Humanure is a whole thing, a specialized long term compost heap. It's kind of a racket that incinerating toilets are SO expensive, but they kind of have the answer.
I think poop smells as soon as air hits it. Babies don't use toilets but they sure do stink. Maybe the toilet smells less because it has a door that seals the compartment off after you poop. Informative video. Thanks.
Wow!! If anyone can make poo sexy, it's you. Thanks for helping us decide what to do with our basement restroom addition.
What happens if some urine gets in the back hole?
Great question! If liquid or moisture of any kind gets in the solids bucket (black hole), the worst-case-scenario is that the fan won't be able to keep up, and it will start to smell so you'll have to change the bag sooner. If someone, like, actually peed in it or something, I'd just recommend the change the bag asap. Thanks for watching, and commenting!🙌
Or use coffee grounds that will eliminate smells
I have a tiny house and the composting Separett Villa toilet and I cannot say enough good about.
I'm so glad you love yours as much as I love mine!
Does not sound like you are doing any mixing of any composting media.? Coffee grounds great idea!
What about for men? Just looking at that baby toilet I'd say my business gon be down the tube rubbing all over the walls am I wrong?
I'm going to put a separett toilet in my house on permafrost in order to only use my gray water system, and still be able to have a fully-featured bathroom.
I love that plan! Thanks for watching!❤
I was waiting for the entire video for you to show how you clean it. you forgot.
I made the cleaning tutorial a separate video! Here you go: ruclips.net/video/nSyUo7VkS9Q/видео.html
Thanks for watching!❤
😅you do know any water you flush down the toilet makes it back to the water table one way or another it’s not wasted.
With out the “ b”😂
😂
What about toilet paper?
Great question! I just throw mine in the "solids" bucket. Although, sometimes people will throw it in the garbage if there is only pee on it to save space so they don't have to change the bucket so often.
Where do you throw away you bag you empty?
Great question! When I made this video, I was living in a city that offered composting trash service, so I put it in the bin for that.
Thanks for watching!

Awkward question - but - have you heard anyone say if it is "man friendly?"
Hahah, I have never heard the term "man friendly" but I like it!😂 To answer your question, yes, IF the man in question is willing to sit down to pee. Male users voted, and it's simply the best way.😄✅
Do you know why you combine a pretty bad microphone for talking to your audience with the unnecessary loud intro/outro music? Me and the majority of people watching don't know either...
Well, everyone starts somewhere.
@MrSvenovitch You’re rude
I think this is great but I can’t see a man being able to aim down the pee part
Haha, yes, you bring up an excellent point! Men generally make an exception and sit down with this type of toilet, it just works far better that way. (Or so I've heard. :P) Thanks for watching!
@@tinyhouseconcierge I’m moving to the countryside and I’m actually thinking of getting one, this was very helpful, thanks 🙏
For sure! @@mousenation3867
Plastic bags used for these things are worse than using water
It’s illegal to dump urine out line that because it builds bacteria. That’s in most states based on EPA rules
It doesn't sound like your "grey water" is "grey" anymore. It's sewage.... isn't it?
@@nanpac3699 Sewage is any waste water created by a community. Greywater and blackwater both fall under the category of "sewage." With this toilet, there is no blackwater (poo water) in the equation.
@@tinyhouseconcierge urine goes in black water. Gray water is just wash water. You put urine in it then it's black water.
That’s pee funnel isn’t vented
The toilet is actually vented in two places. One is a plumbing vent that goes through the roof and the other is a Separett-specific vent that goes out the back of the house. I'm not a plumbing expert, but the house is RVIA certified.
